Next Meeting: January 4th 2011

At previous Atlanta Burlesque and Cabaret Club meetings we have discussed that the club meetings do better with a topic of conversation. At the last meeting we all chatted briefly about the movie "Burlesque" we all said a big ol' gaggle of us should hit the new movie "Burlesque" in the movie theatre. We all knew this thing was going to be an atrocity, but then, in the process of planning a decked out descent upon the movie theatre I read something that gave me pause... a moment to reconsider putting my hard earned sheckles into seeing a film that pretty much smacks of absolute ignorance of a genre we all sweat, bleed, and cry for because we love it so.

Let's face it my bedazzled brethren of boundless bounty... we don't make much for the thing we love. Is it really a good thing to put one dime behind something that really just does not get what burlesque really is? I am not going to even attempt to say what my dear friend Tigger! has put so eloquently and succinctly down already. And I for one haven't totally made up my mind either. But I thought that Tigger!'s words are so nicely said, sharing this illumination with our little community would do a lot of good. So here it is, and I would invite you to discuss with me, or with others in the local scene your feelings on it as well ladies and gents, if you haven't had the divine pleasure already, the retarded genius himself, Tigger!:

Subject: [missexoticworld] Burlesque- the movie or the art form?

I finally broke down and responded to questions about the movie they happened to call "Burlesque." I know, I know. Another one? I can only offer that it is not a review, just a response to some of the press:

"I will not join the chorus of my burlesque brethren reviewing the film because I have not seen it. I have read and heard enough reviews to know that I'm not interested in paying for what will likely be a disappointing experience. (Maybe I'll rent it some drunken night next year.) I'm not livid that it's out there, I just don't think I'd enjoy the film, regardless of its title. It has also been made clear that it does not reflect burlesque as our community knows/practices/cherishes it. I do recognize the opportunity that this film's publicity presents for us to get new audiences in to see what we do, even if they were expecting something quite different. I support a very broad definition of burlesque and can live with the fact that mine has very little in common with Mr. Antin's.

However, I do take exception to this sniffing attitude of superiority to dirty strippers. Down & dirty strippers (and confrontational performance artists too) are every bit as much our forebears as cabaret and vaudeville artists. Burlesque is a working class art form. It historically employs low humor to skewer self-righteous so-called high culture. It lampoons politics and is a political art form itself, especially in our puritanical society. These are essential elements. It seems to me that his film does none of these things. Another critical element in burlesque is Self-Expression. That is very difficult to achieve when you're trotting out tired imitations of Fosse's brilliant work. Most artists feel strongly that you do not celebrate your heroes by merely imitating them but by learning from them and perhaps feeling their influence here and there in your own original work.

Attitudes like those attributed to Antin & Culpepper in the press suggest that they seek to "elevate" burlesque. (From The Advocate: "The two shared a vision of burlesque — musical parody with sexual innuendo, as it originated in Europe in the 1800s, before it got muddled together with stripping.") These people who strive to make burlesque highbrow are working to kill it. When burlesque becomes elitist and ceases to connect with real people, it ceases to be burlesque. By all means, we should be intelligent and subtle and witty in our work, but we have to achieve the high/low balancing act. We need to deliver thoughtful content and practiced artistry while Entertaining the people in the cheap seats.

Similarly, opera used to be for everyone and was lively and exciting. Opera stars used to be rock stars. Once upon a time, ordinary working class people could afford to see it and even had fun at the opera. As far as most ordinary people today are concerned, opera is as good as dead. I do not want to see that happen to burlesque."

SOOOOoooo... now that you have read that, I would love to know your feelings on the matter. I personally feel that the Opera point is an interesting topic, and i would very much like to talk about how that correlates to our art form in your opinion.

So there's a group of crazy people that thinks we need even more burlesque in Atlanta! I'm not talking about more troupes or more shows, I'm talking about bringing internationally acclaimed burlesque performers from around the world for a full weekend of Classes, Panels, Vendors, and Shows! That's where the 1st Annual Southern Fried Burlesque Fest comes in! On March 10-13, 2011 we're going to be invaded by more burlesque hotness then you can shake a stick at, not even a pointed stick! Hey all ((Whew!!!)) Who knew things would get this hectic both in the real world, and in the glam-bam-thank you ma'am glittery world of burlesque!?!

Vroom Vroom Valentines with The Syrens of the South

welcome back my friends with my apologies for tardiness. who wants to hear about pasties? had you been at this show, well, you'd have seen them instead. what a delightful collection of entertainment you missed. the evening was hosted by our good friend, hepcat mike. remember, if you don't like his jokes, he didn't write them - he just updated them. the first performer of the evening was the lovely miss kira who tempted the audience with her bellydancing skills. we were next treated to a fan dance by the double-d's of dixie, miss d'lilah d'lite. shifting gears slightly, katherine lashe shared her skills on hiring a contractor with john carney. the heat was turned up again when betsy stryper took to the stage. mr tim monteith took us all back to bedrock as wilma flinstone and dino performed "like we never loved at all". makes you wonder where fred was. the ravishing reneá le roux took the stage next and wowed us all with gravity-defying gyrations and more curves than a mountain road. she was followed by every man's favourite solo act, miss rosie palms with a cautionary tale of love & marriage. we returned to bellydance with the sultry stormy knight. remember, no two of her shows are the same so come to both shows if you can. our friends from blast-off burlesque, sadie hawkins & dickie van dyke, gave us a very special thrill as they retired one of their numbers on our stage. at long last, katherine lashe and talloolah love took the stage (individually) to close the night.

the next extravaganza is just around the corner. the amazing 3d annual spring chicken show: cock-a-billy style. if you're really anxious, the doors will open early for a student showcase. tickets are $5 for the showcase & $15 for the main course ($10 in advance). come on out for some southern-style fun & plenty of breasts, thighs, and drumsticks. special guests include kisa von teasa and siren santina of salomé cabaret in knoxville.

“The Business of Burlesque with Katherine Lashe” Katherine Lashe has put together a class for people who want to take their Burlesque and performance career to the next level. 12-2pm "Art of Embellishment with Katherine Lashe"

Did you ever wonder how to sew on to panties or gloves and keep them stretchy? How to sew on an appliqué to spruce up a store bought piece? How to deal with sequins, rhinestones; sew through feathers, fringe and other trims? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class is for you! Bring any costume pieces you’d like to work on or ask questions about or just come and take notes about the example pieces being shown.

2-4pm “What’s in a Name? with Sabrina Pandora”

Work on stage names and intros with Sabrina Pandora. Students will be instructed as to how to come up with a proper persona and how to write catchy intros for an Emcee to use as their first impression. Sabrina is an accomplished stand-up comedian has been chosen to host many events all over Atlanta. She gives stellar advice for any budding performer!

In Loving Memory of Jessica Patterson

Good Afternoon Everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of one of our own. Jessica was born February 26th, 1979 and passed away on February 15th, 2010. She was survived by 2 children Rachel and Ethan, her loving partner Jaclyn and all of those who will remember the wonderful person that she was. No matter her faults, Jes always stood for what she believed in, even when no one else did. She saw good in others that no one would even take notice in. She was stronger than most and faced her own mortality with a courage that most of us lack in life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 at the tender age of 27. She fought a long, hard battle that many of us will be blessed to never know, but it is important that we acknowledge what she went through and the disease that she fought so long and hard only to surrender to its physical decay. Jessica did not lose the battle, she won the hearts of everyone that has ever crossed her path and she will be remembered and revered as an icon of hope for the survivors of women who have passed with this terrible disease that doctors say she was too young to die from. Her life may have been short, but in her death, she has become a warrior for young women diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and a Hero to her children

Big City was introduced to Jessica in October of 2009. They had been struggling to find a Breast Cancer Charity that would be willing to work with a burlesque troop and decided just to send the proceeds of their picture sales to whichever charity Jessica chose. When asked where she wanted the proceeds from the sales of her pictures to go, she said "I want the money to go to the kids who have lost a mom to Breast Cancer". As it turns out, there is no such foundation. There are plenty of Scholarship Foundations for colleges, but nothing to help a child overcome the emotional damage caused by watching a parent waste away to cancer. The Jessica Patterson Foundation was created to do just that. The proceeds from the sales of the entire Pink Ribbon Series, will go to help support the emotional and financial needs of children who have lost a parent or loved one to Cancer.

Regardless of who you are, weather you work as an open agent or you're in a troupe, Breast Cancer affects all of us, it is the great equalizer in our world. We are all daughters, sisters, and some of us are mothers. So it is with all hope and without agenda that I ask you to share her story with your fans, friends, family and loved ones. “Vintage Hair Styles with Talloolah Love” Talloolah Love has been doing the up-do’s with vintage flair and emphasis on glamor for the past six years. She can show you the secret formula for polishing your look on stage with the perfect coif. It is advisable to bring a camera and be prepared to take notes. Talloolah Love has made her name within stylist circles from her experience with weddings, Hair fashion shows with Aveda, and photo shoots done all over Atlanta. She feels that vintage hairstyles are a lost art and wishes to share it in a fun and practical way to the modern femme fatale!

Come learn the basics of vintage-style makeup, from the roaring smokey 20's to the pop blooming 60's, from professional makeup artist Audrey Starphoenix, also known as the bellydance and burlesque performer Stormy Knight. Starphoenix has been a professional makeup artist for 6 years and will show you the subtle differences from era to era and how to translate these to photo or stage. Come prepared to take notes and bring any makeup you have questions about.
ABCs & 123s Burlesque Classes are $20 each or you can by a four class pass for $60, making each class only $15, saving you $20. 12pm Beyond Boobies, put some hep in your step! With Hotsie Totsie

After a decade of training in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and Renaissance dancing, Hotise Totsie got hep to the jive. Now this burlesque baby puts some swing in her step! In Beyond Boobies, Hotsie will teach you how to borrow moves from the stars of the Cotton Club, the Folies Bergeres, the Vegas Strip, and the silver screen -- even if you have no formal dance experience. It's burlesque appeal with or without the reveal! The class is open to guys and dolls. Wear clothes you can move in --high heels, if you can handle them!

2pm They shimmied, they smoked, they spooned, and they sizzled. They cut their hair short and their hemlines shorter. And when the depression hit, their bare skin raised spirits higher than the arch in their eyebrows. These were the bad girls of the twenties and thirties. This class will focus on the moves that grew out of the radical new styles of entertainment, dress, and behavior in the crazy decades between the Wars.

We all know that, like the rhinestone, the art of burlesque has many facets. Not only do you need to master the art of taking it off, costuming, and hair and make-up, you also need to have some real stage presence and audience interaction. This class will help you get over your fear of being on stage, get comfortable with eye contact, and warm you up with basic acting techniques - all guaranteed to bring out your inner Tigress...or Goddess, or sex kitten, or saucy wench....the list goes on and on. Please wear clothes that you can really move and stretch in.

2pm-4pm "Move to the Music" with Ursula Undress
This basic movement class is a dance class for dancers and non-dancers alike. Learn how to travel across stage, work with your body, and emphasize what you've got. Special attention is paid to improvising with music and adding spice to your number through "pow" moves. Please wear clothes to dance in and either the shoes you are performing in, or something similar.

Come enjoy this maiden voyage away from the standard burlesques and enter into a world of neo-Victorian anachronistic characters. An evening filled with brass, leather, steam and SCIENCE! Modelled after the fantastic sub-genre of fiction, fashion, and music often called Steampunk or Victoriana. This event series promises to highlight fine vendors, entertaining amusements, and music that would make Jules Verne proud.

With song selections playing through the night by the illustrious host of the evening, the notorious Doctor Q, the evening promises to cater to all types from any time period. For those with finer tastes, there will be performances sprinkled through the evening to delight and defy the sharpest of imagination. And the lords and ladies may even wish to peruse the displays by the artists, vendors, and sponsors such as Anachrocon, the Clockwork Cabaret, Extraordinary Contraptions, Gentlemen’s Emporium, Penny Dreadful Productions and more.

Talloolah Love teaches the fine art of making your own pasties! She will teach the practicalities of making, wearing and performing with pasties! Many of the materials required will be provided with a $5 materials charge; however you are encouraged to bring needles, thread, and scissors. Each student will be going home with their very own pasties!

Many of us go to a random store and grab some hose with a mix of apathy and dread. Then, there are people that look and feel each and every pair. Testing for stretch, texture and opacity. They know the secret of a good weapon when they see one. Let Kisa von Teasa teach you the art of stocking removal. This can add quite the dramatic element to any performance. Do you want it short and snappy or do you savor a slow burn? Whatever you do, don’t underestimate this skill in the Burlesque Performer’s repertoire. In this class Kisa von Teasa will show you exactly how a pair a thigh-hi’s can be a tool of deadly mesmerism. You will need: At least two pair of either Thigh-Hi’s or Garter hose. Do not bring your favourite as you may rip them in practice. Pumps without straps, so that you can easily slip them on and off, Garter Belt, Clothing that you can have easy access to said garter belt and hose, pretty Burly-Q panties, tap pants, and/or a skirt will do. (There will be hosiery for sale at the class as well)

Big City Burlesque & Vaudeville had a fabulous Holiday vacation and are currently planning our next big show in February. The only problem is, it's below freezing in Atlanta! What the Hell? It's too cold to rehearse, it's too cold to practice, it's too cold to do anything. Our gals are frozen and unmotivated and I'm sick of it.

Time to get back to work Ladies! And what better way to melt the ice off of our pasties than to team up with the hottest show in town, the Hot Rods and HellzaPoppin Side Show Review, to bring the "Hot" back to Hotlanta.

Burlesque happenings!

First off, if you missed Prime Time with the Blast Off Burlesque kids, then you missed out on QUITE a show!!! They really lived up to their recently bestowed title of best burlesque troupe in Atlanta, with their own saucy theme that had us all waxing nostalgic, from the hot hot fantasy come to life I Dream of Genie gettin' naked behind a scrim, to all the ladies in the audience drooling over Feris' House impersonation, while all the gents drooled over nurse Sadie on her Lyra, to the Big Underwear scene from Pee Wee's playhouse by Dicky Van Dyke. I have to tell you, Barbalicious' rendition of "See Alice" will be remembered for all time. The show was a mixed media extravaganza for the ages with video displays leading into full stage performances which seems to have become a Blast Off signature, and a personal favorite by this gal here!

How to enter, exit and how to keep your audience when things go wrong are all important lessons to learn. This is a practical how to be remembered and noted by the audience, the judges, or even your significant other! Renea’ Le Roux holds multiple titles proving she can keep their attention. Students are required to wear performance shoes and comfortable clothing to attend the class and be prepared to participate.

Syrens of the South played to a packed Variety playhouse, I have to say, there isn't much better for a lady's birthday than that! LOOK! You can see our booth in the background! heh, the only one I could find just yet, teehee!

Miss Renea' le Roux is back in Atlanta fresh and lovely from her performance with some of the biggest names in burlesque, including the reigning Miss Exotic World, Kalani Kokonuts

Honestly, I don't think this town can do Halloween without Burlesque, every year we talk about how busy we are and it never seems to go out of fashion to have at least one burlesque event on Halloween so here's the line up of the must see's and do's of the dames of daring and darling decolletage!

Tomorrow:

Drink and Draw is figure drawing with live models in amazing cosplay outfits from your favorite comic books and movies. There are timed sketches with trivia questions and prizes in between. Come on down and hang with some of the greatest amateur and professional artists from all over Atlanta. Beer and food specials run all night long. To celebrate Halloween this month, we are having a Drink and Draw masquerade. Anyone who shows up in costume and will pose for a 5 or 10 minute sketch, eats and drinks for free! At the end of the night there will be a costume contest for anyone who comes dressed up - whether you modeled or not. The grand prize will be over $150 worth of house cash and goodies, and bragging rights until next year. Please let us know in the comments if your interested in modeling so we can keep enough spaces open. It will be a great night of drinking and art, and a great trial run for your Halloween costume. Come on out and have some fun!!

Burlesque EXTRAS!!!

Syrens of the South are at it again on the Travel Channel! Who says it doesn't pay to be a little obsessed? This time, they featured the world famous Miss Exotic World competition. Now from what I understand, that airs tonight? I still haven't even seen the one from the Pirate convention so all you's have one up on me!

This Past weekend, there were some local burlesque super stars in the Little Five Points Parade. I tell you I have never envied a car so much as the spook show car ladies and gents, it was CRAWLING with blast off burlesque hotties!

I want to give a warm shout out to the beautiful Lala Luscious for letting her pink pussy car be invaded by Ursula Undress, Rosie Palms and yours truly! TRIBE's Art Cars section of the parade makes me want to start getting into car mods ;)

Hinson’s most recent CD release, Target Practice, melds weepy twang and searing guitar riffs and lyrics that speak of love-gone-bad and the dark side of the honky-tonk lifestyle.

We all know that, like the rhinestone, the art of burlesque has many facets. Not only do you need to master the art of taking it off, costuming, and hair and make-up, you also need to have some real stage presence and audience interaction. This class will help you get over your fear of being on stage, get comfortable with eye contact, and warm you up with basic acting techniques - all guaranteed to bring out your inner Tigress...or Goddess, or sex kitten, or saucy wench....the list goes on and on. Please wear clothes that you can really move and stretch in.

2pm-4pm “What’s in a Name? with Sabrina Pandora”

Work on stage names and intros with Sabrina Pandora. Students will be instructed as to how to come up with a proper persona and how to write catchy intros for an Emcee to use as their first impression. Sabrina is an accomplished stand-up comedian has been chosen to host many events all over Atlanta. She gives stellar advice for any budding performer!

ABCs & 123s Burlesque Classes are $20 each or you can by a four class pass for $60 saving you $20. Katherine Lashe has put together a class for people who want to take their Burlesque and performance career to the next level. She will expound on how to get your name out there and recognized on a larger scale, go over how to get the seats occupied, and how to negotiate your bookings. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional this class is essential.
Katherine Lashe, along with her business partner, began Syrens of the South Productions almost three years ago. Its resounding success has been a testament to her past managerial positions and booking finesse garnered through years of experience and trial and error.

“Burlesque Movement and Props with Katherine Lashe”

Students will be instructed in basic movements and the use of typical burlesque props such as parasols, chairs, canes and fans. Class participation is required, so students attending the class should wear comfortable clothes and high heeled shoes or character shoes. Students are encouraged to bring their own props, some will be available to borrow or purchase at the class.

Charlie Brown, Garfield, and Pee Wee’s Playhouse all had something great which has gone out of style, the Halloween special!!! The Syrens of the South want to bring back that tradition with their very own Halloween Spook-tacular!

Atlanta is full of amazing talent and the Syrens have dug up some of the best for our Halloween Special! The all star cast includes Vagina Jenkins, Chad Sanborn and Katherine Lashe fresh from The News Orleans Burlesque Festival as well as the nationally renowned Talloolah Love, our newest star Ursula Undress, and local favourite Stormy Knight will be joining the show for her Syrens of the South Debut! We’ll have many other amazing performers besides these in this ghoulish line-up to add to the Halloween Hi jinx and everyone’s invited and you don’t even have to spend all night in the pumpkin patch!!!

Take the scenic route through vaudeville as Hepcat Mike (the illegitimate lovechild of Henny Youngman and Phyllis Diller) begins with early 19th century variety shows and continues the tour through polite early vaudeville, down dangerous back alleys of Burlesque, into the cinema which was both classical Vaudeville’s savior and doom. But fear not, the current neo-burlesque and vaudeville revival proves that everything old is new again. Want more? Hepcat gives the shortcuts to building your vaudeville library, with suggestions on texts for further reading and info on where to find the most jam-packed video archives for this important, ever-growing art form.

THE SILVER SCREAM SPOOK SHOW is a 30 minute live stage show filled with magic tricks, dancing girls, jokes, spectacle and frights! We follow it with a classic horror movie on actual 35mm film!

The second major addition to Toho Studios' giant-monster series after Gojira (aka Godzilla, 1954), was Rodan (or Radon), a giant pterodactyl whose wings create massive, destructive winds as it flies by. There are actually two of them in this film, mates who finally get together (after the traditional destruction of various Japanese cities) and die in an oddly touching lovers' death-swoon into an active volcano. The film's best sequence is the chilling opening, in which Rodan's egg is discovered in a cave by doomed miners. The first color film in the series, Ishiro Honda's effective thriller features some interesting special-effects work by Eiji Tsuburaya and was dubbed into English by actors including Keye Luke and future Star Trek crewman George Takei. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Sept 13 – noon-2pm - “You've Got It! Now Flaunt It! With Rosie Palms”
Being a goddess isn’t about the way you look, its something that comes from inside. Feeling sexy makes a woman sexy. It’s all in the attitude! Find out how to minimize body issues through the magic of costuming, while maximizing your most attractive features and flaunt them without fear for an audience of 1 or 100!
Class requirements: dancing shoes, clean underwear and a naughty attitude. This class is intended for women only.

Sept 20 – noon-2pm “Beginning Burlesque Movement and History with Katherine Lashe”
She will present information on the history of burlesque, followed by a how to on the basic moves and creative process that goes into making a burlesque persona. Students will hear anecdotes collected by Katherine Lashe from actual Burlesque American Icons such as Tura Santana, Satan’s Angel and more! They’ll also answer the age old questions of names, fringe, and pasties! Students will be encouraged to wear lose fitted clothing and comfortable shoes and be prepared to not only take notes, but also be ready to practice beginning burlesque movements and peels!!! Beginning Burlesque Books will be available for $5.

2pm-4pm "Burlesque costuming on a budget with Vagina Jenkins”
Creative Loafing’s 2008 Best Burlesque performer will share her tried and true method of manoeuvring a tight budget with a broad imagination. You will get to bring your creation home with you to begin your process of building your very first burlesque costume!
Class requirements: Bra or Panties to decorate, any trims beads or baubles you want to bring, there will be supplies provided for the class. There is a $5 materials charge.
