Syrens of the South played to a packed Variety playhouse, I have to say, there isn't much better for a lady's birthday than that! LOOK! You can see our booth in the background! heh, the only one I could find just yet, teehee!

Miss Renea' le Roux is back in Atlanta fresh and lovely from her performance with some of the biggest names in burlesque, including the reigning Miss Exotic World, Kalani Kokonuts

Honestly, I don't think this town can do Halloween without Burlesque, every year we talk about how busy we are and it never seems to go out of fashion to have at least one burlesque event on Halloween so here's the line up of the must see's and do's of the dames of daring and darling decolletage!

Tomorrow:

Drink and Draw is figure drawing with live models in amazing cosplay outfits from your favorite comic books and movies. There are timed sketches with trivia questions and prizes in between. Come on down and hang with some of the greatest amateur and professional artists from all over Atlanta. Beer and food specials run all night long. To celebrate Halloween this month, we are having a Drink and Draw masquerade. Anyone who shows up in costume and will pose for a 5 or 10 minute sketch, eats and drinks for free! At the end of the night there will be a costume contest for anyone who comes dressed up - whether you modeled or not. The grand prize will be over $150 worth of house cash and goodies, and bragging rights until next year. Please let us know in the comments if your interested in modeling so we can keep enough spaces open. It will be a great night of drinking and art, and a great trial run for your Halloween costume. Come on out and have some fun!!

Burlesque EXTRAS!!!

Syrens of the South are at it again on the Travel Channel! Who says it doesn't pay to be a little obsessed? This time, they featured the world famous Miss Exotic World competition. Now from what I understand, that airs tonight? I still haven't even seen the one from the Pirate convention so all you's have one up on me!

This Past weekend, there were some local burlesque super stars in the Little Five Points Parade. I tell you I have never envied a car so much as the spook show car ladies and gents, it was CRAWLING with blast off burlesque hotties!

I want to give a warm shout out to the beautiful Lala Luscious for letting her pink pussy car be invaded by Ursula Undress, Rosie Palms and yours truly! TRIBE's Art Cars section of the parade makes me want to start getting into car mods ;)

Looking somewhat like Dracula's nasty little brother who spent some hard years drinking and working as a carnival barker for a second-rate freak show, Unknown Hinson translates that vibe to his style of country and western-tinged psychobilly. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, this red-necked crooner gained regional popularity with a self-produced television show in 1992 and soon was touring nationwide, wowing audiences with his outrageous and campy, white-trash persona and freewheeling, sleazy tone. Hinson’s most recent CD release, Target Practice, melds weepy twang and searing guitar riffs and lyrics that speak of love-gone-bad and the dark side of the honky-tonk lifestyle.

Syrens of the South, named 1st Runner-up for Creative Loafing Atlanta's Best Burlesque Troupe 2009, will be opening the show promptly at 9pm with a blend of Halloween and Rockabilly Burlesque!

Oct 25 – noon-2pm "Give 'Em Some! With Ursula Undress"

We all know that, like the rhinestone, the art of burlesque has many facets. Not only do you need to master the art of taking it off, costuming, and hair and make-up, you also need to have some real stage presence and audience interaction. This class will help you get over your fear of being on stage, get comfortable with eye contact, and warm you up with basic acting techniques - all guaranteed to bring out your inner Tigress...or Goddess, or sex kitten, or saucy wench....the list goes on and on. Please wear clothes that you can really move and stretch in.

2pm-4pm “What’s in a Name? with Sabrina Pandora”

Work on stage names and intros with Sabrina Pandora. Students will be instructed as to how to come up with a proper persona and how to write catchy intros for an Emcee to use as their first impression. Sabrina is an accomplished stand-up comedian has been chosen to host many events all over Atlanta. She gives stellar advice for any budding performer!

ABCs & 123s Burlesque Classes are $20 each or you can by a four class pass for $60 saving you $20. Workshops do have a minimum attendance requirement, so if you plan to be there please send us an email to pre-register at syrensofthesouth@gmail.com no later than 5pm the Friday before the scheduled class if you have not already prepaid for the class or if you are planning on using a class pass.

“The Accumulation of Change” is both a definition of evolution and a new art science performance collaboration between Seattle’s Lelavision Physical Music and Biomolecular Chemistry Professor, Dr David Lynn of Emory University. This performance experiment, sponsored by Emory College Program in Science and Society, combines Lelavision’s hybrid genre of art (kinetic musical sculpture, music and dance) with excerpts of Dr Lynn’s research on the chemical origins of life, self-assembly, and molecular evolution.

Katherine Lashe has put together a class for people who want to take their Burlesque and performance career to the next level. She will expound on how to get your name out there and recognized on a larger scale, go over how to get the seats occupied, and how to negotiate your bookings. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional this class is essential.
Katherine Lashe, along with her business partner, began Syrens of the South Productions almost three years ago. Its resounding success has been a testament to her past managerial positions and booking finesse garnered through years of experience and trial and error.

“Burlesque Movement and Props with Katherine Lashe”

Students will be instructed in basic movements and the use of typical burlesque props such as parasols, chairs, canes and fans. Class participation is required, so students attending the class should wear comfortable clothes and high heeled shoes or character shoes. Students are encouraged to bring their own props, some will be available to borrow or purchase at the class.

Take the scenic route through vaudeville as Hepcat Mike (the illegitimate lovechild of Henny Youngman and Phyllis Diller) begins with early 19th century variety shows and continues the tour through polite early vaudeville, down dangerous back alleys of Burlesque, into the cinema which was both classical Vaudeville’s savior and doom. But fear not, the current neo-burlesque and vaudeville revival proves that everything old is new again. Want more? Hepcat gives the shortcuts to building your vaudeville library, with suggestions on texts for further reading and info on where to find the most jam-packed video archives for this important, ever-growing art form.

THE SILVER SCREAM SPOOK SHOW is a 30 minute live stage show filled with magic tricks, dancing girls, jokes, spectacle and frights! We follow it with a classic horror movie on actual 35mm film!

The second major addition to Toho Studios' giant-monster series after Gojira (aka Godzilla, 1954), was Rodan (or Radon), a giant pterodactyl whose wings create massive, destructive winds as it flies by. There are actually two of them in this film, mates who finally get together (after the traditional destruction of various Japanese cities) and die in an oddly touching lovers' death-swoon into an active volcano. The film's best sequence is the chilling opening, in which Rodan's egg is discovered in a cave by doomed miners. The first color film in the series, Ishiro Honda's effective thriller features some interesting special-effects work by Eiji Tsuburaya and was dubbed into English by actors including Keye Luke and future Star Trek crewman George Takei. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Last week Syrens of the South celebrated two years of fabulous burlesque with all of Atlanta and part of Baltimore when they hosted the fabulous, critically acclaimed, multi-title holding duo, Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey. Come learn the in’s and outs for maximum screams and shouts from and audience of 1 to 500 in the ABC’s and 123’s of Burlesque class series from Syrens of the South. Sept 13 – noon-2pm - “You've Got It! Now Flaunt It! With Rosie Palms”
Being a goddess isn’t about the way you look, its something that comes from inside. Feeling sexy makes a woman sexy. It’s all in the attitude! Find out how to minimize body issues through the magic of costuming, while maximizing your most attractive features and flaunt them without fear for an audience of 1 or 100!
Class requirements: dancing shoes, clean underwear and a naughty attitude. This class is intended for women only.

Sept 20 – noon-2pm “Beginning Burlesque Movement and History with Katherine Lashe”
She will present information on the history of burlesque, followed by a how to on the basic moves and creative process that goes into making a burlesque persona. Students will hear anecdotes collected by Katherine Lashe from actual Burlesque American Icons such as Tura Santana, Satan’s Angel and more! They’ll also answer the age old questions of names, fringe, and pasties! Students will be encouraged to wear lose fitted clothing and comfortable shoes and be prepared to not only take notes, but also be ready to practice beginning burlesque movements and peels!!! Beginning Burlesque Books will be available for $5.

2pm-4pm "Burlesque costuming on a budget with Vagina Jenkins”
Creative Loafing’s 2008 Best Burlesque performer will share her tried and true method of manoeuvring a tight budget with a broad imagination. You will get to bring your creation home with you to begin your process of building your very first burlesque costume!
Class requirements: Bra or Panties to decorate, any trims beads or baubles you want to bring, there will be supplies provided for the class. There is a $5 materials charge.

Sept 27 – noon-2pm “Pastie Making with Talloolah Love”
Talloolah Love teaches the fine art of making your own pasties! She will teach the practicalities of making, wearing and performing with pasties!
Many of the materials required will be provided with a $5 materials charge; however you are encouraged to bring needles, thread, and scissors. Each student will be going home with their very own pasties!

2-4pm “Hepcat’s Vaudeville: The Nickel Tour” with Hepcat Mike
Take the scenic route through vaudeville as Hepcat Mike (the illegitimate lovechild of Henny Youngman and Phyllis Diller) begins with early 19th century variety shows and continues the tour through polite early vaudeville, down dangerous back alleys of Burlesque, into the cinema which was both classical Vaudeville’s savior and doom. But fear not, the current neo-burlesque and vaudeville revival proves that everything old is new again. Want more? Hepcat gives the shortcuts to building your vaudeville library, with suggestions on texts for further reading and info on where to find the most jam-packed video archives for this important, ever-growing art form.

Week in review!

Exclusive coverage of Burlesque from behind the pasties! Everyone knows that Syrens of the South Productions hosted the illustrious Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey this past weekend for their 2nd anniversary spectacular! If you dont, well now you do, and did you also know that Trixie and Monkey just finished up going to clown school and that they taught not one, not two but three fantastic classes at the Syrens of the South's home base to some of the biggest names in the local biz?

Im not going to name names, but Im not ashamed to admit that this tassle twirler did a few rounds on the workshop floor and I have to say, this chick-a-pen's been doing this a long long time, and even if you think you know all there is, you're wrong, the evolution of the performer is never done and there is always room for improvement! So be sure you come out to the next few shows in the local scene to see how much the game gets stepped up after these world class performers left their mark in the next few months! Speaking of classes, have you heard that the Syrens of the South are going to restart their wildly popular ABC's and 123's of Burlesque class series on September 13th with "You've Got It! Hey everyone! So the Atlanta Burlesque and Cabaret "meetup" group is officially down for good!

Now, we have a facebook to supplement our escapades and announcements! There is still the old google group up for a while if for nothing else than to give an alternative to those who do not like face book (yes... they exist) and so that I have an easy forum to write out the weekly interest stories, but I think facebook is going to be my go-to for most of the instant messaging and bulletins for the in-between incidentals that happens. Its more user friendly and more importantly, Burlesque friendly ;) So check it out! I am currently having a logo made for the group because pictures just don't seem to cut it.

Last club meeting we discussed the following:

-Page did a wonderful costuming presentation. If you are interested in doing a presentation at the meeting please let me know. It only has to be 15-30 minutes long and it can run the gambit of all things theatrical as long as you tie it in with Burlesque, cabaret and/or vaudeville.

-Syrens of the South announced their impending trunk sale and current fabric sale! If you are interested in participating in the trunk sale which will be happening some point in September, or, if you are interested in some really great fabric priced at $2 per yard, or $1 per yard if Renea Le Roux makes you something from it, please contact Syrensofthesouth@gmail.com

Look for more information on both of these things to come in the near future!

- The decision to actually let the meetup fold, and create a Burlesque and Cabaret facebook group was made. The only difference is, you will want to be sure to keep up with the calendar on the Atlanta Burlesque Group here! You can keep up with the calendar, check out all of Atlanta's local talent and see reviews done on past shows.

- Syrens of the South Anniversary tickets and passes to Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey's workshops are now available, and selling already! Have you heard about the lineup of the show? Pyratecon 2009 was filmed in New Orleans the weekend of April 3-5, 2009 and

will be aired September 23, 2009 on the Travel Channel at 8 PM eastern time.

The segment that will be aired is called " Extreme Conventions". It's been

predicted that the airing of the Pyratecon 2009 segment will be the most

last month, the syrens performed their nautically-inspired extravaganza, "syrens of the seven seas". co-hosted by john carney and "hepcap'n" mike, the ladies (and invited gentlemen) regaled us with fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... sorry, wrong show. suffice it so say that jokes may have gone overboard, but there was plenty of booty to take your mind off of that. the featured ladies of SoS + rosie palms each gave us two numbers. the show began with miss lashe's "god save the queen" and was followed by rosie palms. talloolah love's first number was her "clockwork doll" & reneá le roux showed us the sexy side of piracy. next came salvador chali, betsy stryper & harley heinz, and ursula undress. we were next treated to a special sword-dancing performance from delacey, and she was followed by the mysterious chad sanborn. rosie returned to show us why she's "the worst pirate in the world", miss lashe had a treasure box to share, talloolah's mermaid routine was next, and reneá closed out the show.

last night was the open house for the new studio space @ little tree plus a show featuring the art and fashion of burlesque. original jewelry was on display as well as costumes by the House of Le Roux. as a special treat, miss le roux closed the show with on of her fascinating routines. as promised, here are photos from the evening's festivities.

Just to prove that last year's 1st Annual Spring Chicken Show was not a lie, the ladies (and selected gentlemen) of the Syrens of the South presented their 2d helping of egg-cellent entertainment as well as a few yolks that fell flat. There were two shows, and the first one opened with a showcase featuring recent graduates of the SoS Burlesque Academy, Salvador Chali (the first Boylesque performer in SoS) and former intern (but still occasional pick-up girl), Burnadette Cinders.

Both shows featured the talented MCs John Carney and Colonel Hepcat Mike, who recently returned from his paternity leave, and the Student Showcase was hosted by Miss Katherine Lashe.

Miss Lashe and John Carney opened the show with a ditty about a very helpful rooster.
Lala Luscious gave us a torch song about, well you guessed it, a chicken.
Tupelo Honey showed us the importance of having peeps in your life and keeping them close to your heart (just not too close or they'll melt).
The Magnificent Enzo gave us another demonstration of his juggling skills.
D'lilah D'lite presented us with her tribute to "Rock-a-Doodle".
Miss Kisa von Teasa from The Fister Sisters visited from Knoxville with a tribute to the power of love. Well more like voodoo and Jean-Luc Picard.
Chad Sanborn wowed us with magic (and his assistant Rosie Palms). He's so good, he showed his skills in super-slo-mo.
Ursula Undress took us back to the 1950s, then Reneá le Roux showed us why the peacock is sometimes referred to as a "fancy chicken".
Miss Lashe and Talloolah Love joined forces for the final number "Eight Piece Box" & passed out chicken snack plates to the VIP tables. Ironocially (or by design), each of our lovelies had four plates with a leg and thigh.

It was a classic & spicy show with no need for a secret recipe.

Vicious Valentines with The Syrens of The South

appropriately enough, our ladies hosted a show on valentine's day. actually, there has been so much demand made of our lovelies that a second show was added. good lawdy, more bawdy! if you weren't there, here's a slice of what you missed.

the evening began with the mezmer society. a delightful mix of Romany culture and dancing on the razor's edge. well, more like a scimitar.

after some brief words from our hostesses, including the happy news of miss talloolah love making it to viva las vegas, our co-MCs Cupid & Heartbreak opened the show.

3 recent graduates took their turns on stage, d'lilah d'lite, harley heinz, and betsy stryper.

next up was chad sanborn's magic with the help of a lovely assistant.

soon after, we were treated with a visit by some of the ladies of effie's club follies in athens. first: bun-e, trixie larue, and lemmie lickett gave us all some new "star wars" fantasies. after we put our light sabers away, legs benedict sang about her favourite woodland creature.

ursula undress did just that. sorry, i couldn't resist.

john carney found out that katherine lashe has a tongue that is as quick as her wit.

talloolah love showed us why it's "too darn hot" and just how hot it will be in vegas.

lastly, reneá le roux was everyone's queen of hearts.

after the curtain call, miss lashe and miss love were treated to a personal show of love of the syrens.

On the last saturday of the month there is the Silver Scream Spook Show. It's put on by Blast off Burlesque and guests. It's always an amazingly fun time to see this quirky show however I've never stayed for the movie, just the acts put on by Blast-Off.

Talloolah Love is competing for a coveted spot in the Miss Viva Las Vegas competition and voting started TODAY !!!

Some of you may remember that Katherine Lashe got to go last year thanks to an overwhelmingly successful campaign that tied her for the most votes received in the voting stage.

The Miss Viva Las Vegas Burlesque competition is held once a year, Only SIX performers get to compete every year based on popularity and Talloolah needs your support to help get her there!

Be sure to pass it along to your friends because every vote counts !!! I have my fingers crossed that you all will participate in sending an Atlanta girl to the bright lights of Vegas to do her city proud!

Syrens of the South Holiday Feast

My apologies for the tardiness in posting. It's been a rough week at chez wombat.

This most recent edition of the Syrens' show included another showcase, and what a turnout! The dancers were all incredible, and they had a sizable cheering section to boot. Way to spread the words, ladies! The latest class of graduates for this showcase were:

D'lilah D'Lite

and Betsy Stryper & Harley Heinz

You ladies were all wonderful.

After a brief intermission to redress the stage, and the dancers, it was time for the big show. Hosted by that dynamic duo of John Carney and Sabrina Pandora, the jokes were flying almost as fast as the bras. Fortunately there were some amazing dancers to keep us all entertained.

What's a feast without food? Blast-Off Burlesque provided the sustinence with their Food Dance to kick off the night. Next up was Miss Talloolah Love (with assistance from a Steam Punk Q) as a Clockwork Doll. She was followed by Katherine Lashe's Holiday Fan Dance. Tim Monteith & His Girls did a rollicking version of the Pointer Sisters' Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town. The first half was closed with Reneá le Roux's interpretation of Winter.

The second half began with a visit from Jesus (David Baldwin) who just wanted to get His birthday back from the Fat Guy. Our next two performers were among the first graduating class, Rosie Palms (Xmas Tree Fantasy) and Chrystal Shawnda Leer (Yule). Elvis entered (and left) the building thanks to Tim Monteith. The lovely and award-winning Vagina Jenkins showed us how to celebrate a Funky Kwanzaa. The entire cast came together to perform The Heatmiser with help from Hepcat Mike. After a full feast, you need to work off the food, so Blast-Off returned to get us all Physical.

In a miracle of the season, we even were witnesses to a marriage proposal! Lauren & Sabrina - congratulations to you both! Thank you for sharing your special moment with us.

Bettie Page Is Muerto

LOS ANGELES – Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controverisal photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85.

Page suffered a heart attack last week in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, her agent Mark Roesler said. Before the heart attack, Page had been hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia.

Pigs Are NOT toxic

We here at Burlesque Atlanta are noted for being absolute geeks (sexy geeks but geeks nonetheless) and thorough to a fault.

So without further ado here is an explanation of why pigs are not toxic by a noted and tenured agriculture professor whom we've consulted on the matter of swine:

"Dubious. The primary purpose of sweat glands is to cool the bod, not excrete toxins. Sweat is mostly water and salt. The liver and kidneys are the primary organs that remove toxins--for humans and pigs. Internal organs of pigs are very human like (or vice versa!) and that is why some parts are transplanted to humans.

Cattle, except Brahma and Brahma crosses, do not have sweat glands which leads to the inconvenient question: Does this person eat beef?

In general, I don't think there is merit to the statement, but there may be a few compounds that are excreted that you friend could be allergic to or have other reactions.

Short answer: Highly implausible to busted."

And yes, it still remains tasty.

Thanks to Talloolah Love we had a blast at this month's Burlesque Meet-Up at Manuels Tavern.

I learned that:

1) Japanese porn is no longer penis censored.

2) Pigs don't sweat and are therefore toxic (but still tasty IMHO).

3) Talloolah and Veronica have taken a whole bunch of really cute girls under their wings to teach them the fine points of burlesque.
