Dreadknight - final pics after varnishing

2012-12-28T22:53:00.000+02:00

I finaly varnished the Dreadknight so now you get to see pics of the complete mini. Overal it was a great mini to build and paint. I aimed for high quality but at the same time I wanted it to be a mini that I could use for gaming so I tried to keep the overal time spend on painting somewhere between 20 - 30 hours. Let me know what you think of the finished mini.

Hint: This mini could be the start of a new army...

Dreadknight... is finished!

Finally it's done. I'll varnish it tomorow and take more pics but these will do for now:

Full speed ahead

2012-12-27T03:18:00.000+02:00

More work is being done. I've completed most of the edge highlights on the metalics and I love the results so far. The only think that's left to do is paint a final layer of Mithril Silver (yeah i know it's got a new name now but I'm too lazy to check it) highlights on the armour, paint the eye lenses and two gems and touch up a few mistakes. Oh, and the final details on the base.

Dreadknight Holiday Special!

We're getting there! unfortunately I had to stop painting... because headache.

The passionate update!

All red parts are now painted!

Dreadknight progress

2012-11-27T18:24:00.003+02:00

I did some work yesterday. The heraldic shield was the most time consuming but also the most fun part. I also shaded some metalics where I wanted a more dirty/ worn look.

My faith is my shield (and adhessive putty is my temporary support):

A knight is rising!

Long time no see folks. To make up for this I embarked on a new big project: a dreadknight! Yeah, that's right, the one with the ridiculously huge sword. At least it was a good excuse to use my airbrush after a long hiatus. At this stage I haven't used a paintbrush yet but I will be doing soon as I need an excuse to try the 'Eavy metal brush that came along with the Citadel Edge Paints.

The Dreadknight (weapons and sword are magnetised):

My weapon of choice? A choice of weapons!

Guess again! After all Grim Reaper is a good friend of mine...

Grot!

2012-01-19T00:43:00.000+02:00

Not much on the painting front lately but I did manage to paint this gretchin. It was good fun as I went for a softer, more pastel green on the skin. I also enjoyed the contrast between green and red. Unfortunately painting will probably be slow for the next 2 weeks since I'm moving home and it will be quite a hassle. Still I think I wil make a comeback when I'm settled in. In the meantime enjoy the pics:

Ork Nob - quick paintjob

2011-12-11T18:17:00.001+02:00

I was a bit bored today so I thought I should try a quick and easy paintjob on an Ork Nob mini I had lying around. I went for a slightly different style wth bold colours and highlights but I think it turned out OK for 3 hours woth of work. What you think?

40k petshop

Hey look what I found in the 40k petshop. Isn't it cute? And it only took me 2 hours to paint.

Obligatory after-varnishing pics of the Sister of Batlle

2011-11-21T21:22:00.001+02:00

I thought you'd enjoy a few pics without the ugly paint handle so here they are. Unfortunatelt the lighting didn't work out very well in these pics but I managed to get a few decent ones.

The finished Sister of Battle & a glimpse of things to come

2011-11-20T18:52:00.001+02:00

The Sister of Battle is finaly finished, finito, done! All in all a grea mini which has helped me progress as a painter. I had to tackle my fear of highlighting very dark colours and it was my first time painting a female face. I'm pleased with how it turned out in the end. I think I finally managed to get all the colours highlighted to the same level and the colour choices fitted nicely. I had some issues in these areas in the past so it feel like I'm moving forward which is great. Without further ado:

And what's that glimps of things to come you may ask. Well my good friend Nik has just finished another awesome conversion and this time I get to paint it. In keeping with the whole Necron talk that's going on lately the mini is a Necron Warrion in a rather... dynamic and unconventional pose. I'm gona start painting it soon so in addition to your comments on the conversion I'd be happy to hear any ideas you may have about painting. You can even post some links to some of your favourite Necron paintjobs. Who knows, I may be inspired to try something new. At the moment I'm thinking of rust and lots of wear combined with some green OSL on the eyes and weapon but I'm open to any suggestions. What I really want is a nice and striking paintjob that will do justice to the conversion work. Pics time:

Sister of Battle update - almost finished

2011-11-09T18:21:00.003+02:00

The mini is almost finished by now. The only things left to paint are the ever dreaded face and hair. I'll do them some other day when I feel less tired and more courageous. I did tackle the final armour highlights though and I'm pleased with them. The mini looks better and more coherent now or at least that's how I hope it looks... Take a look at the pics and tell me what you think I should correct before finishing the mini.

An update on the Sister & an update on the site!

2011-11-07T13:15:00.000+02:00

Let's start in reverse and get the site update out of the way. If you look at the blog homepage carefully you will spot, between the blog title and the latest post, a small unassuming link titled "My minis for sale". If you click this link you will find.... some of my minis that I've put up for sale. It's kind of the start of my painting and comission service so take a look and who knows, you may discover yet another way to get rid of that pesky dispossable income.

Now this page will be the start of a series of pages I plan on adding to my blog. I'm thinking of adding a page with some painting techniques soon. You can also propose what kind of pages you'd like to see added to this blog . I can do most types of pages apart from cake recipes - I'm trying to loose some weight!

Now on to the sister... I managed to get some work done and by now the metallics and most of the decorative details are finished. I'll need to highlight the base details and also bring up the armour highlights a bit as they're kinda dull now. Highlighting a dark, almost black grey is tricky so I decided to highlight the armour up to a point and then finish the highlights affter I've painted all the details. It may sound fidly but having the details done will help me judge how bright the armour highlights should be. Still I hate highlighting very dark colours!

The commisiom service post!

2011-10-14T14:18:00.002+03:00

Ok I've told you about it and it's... almost ready. I still need your help and some suggestions regarding pricing so I thought I should show you a nice selection of my minis so you can propose prices for each of them. It would greatly help me if you could post what you think a reasonable price is for each paintjob. On to the minis:

Commissar Yarrick - final pics, CMON link... and a possible commision service!

2011-09-29T00:09:00.001+03:00

First let's get the pics out of the way:

Oh and here's the CoolMiniOrNot voting link

Now on to the juicy stuff. I am thinking of starting a commision service. I feel my painting skills, while not great, are adequate, my display cabinet is filling up and I've grown less emotionally attached to my minis as the years go by. So what I have in mind?

I'd like to focus on character minis. I could either take up commisions for character minis or sell some of the character minis I paint as one off pieces. And here is where I need your help. I'm new to commision painting so I don't know much about pricing. Most commision companies don't have a set charge for this type of painting so a web search yielded no results. I would like to know what you think would be a reasonable price for a paintjob like that on Yarrick. For the real hardcore fans of this blog you can look up other minis I have painted and propose prices for them as well so I can get an even better idea of how to price my services. Either way I'd greatly appreciate your help.

Commisar Yarrick - finished!

2011-09-19T21:51:00.000+03:00

The mini is finaly finished today! I invited a friend to my house so we could inspire each other to work more on our minis. He was converting, I was painting, time went by and soon Mr Yarrick was all painted up! I'll need your help in spotting any mistakes before varnishing though. Let me know what you think of the finished mini.

Commissar Yarrick - started working on the metallics.

2011-09-13T18:52:00.001+03:00

I finally got to tackle some of my favourte colours: metallics! At the moment they've received just a basecoat, a few highlights and a wash. They need some more highlighting before they're ready but... any update is a good update I guess.

Commissar Yarrick update - green areas and boots painted.

2011-09-01T17:33:00.001+03:00

So its back to Mr Yarrick after the emergency greenstufing. Today I tackled the laurels and the purity seal wax. It was quite time consumming considering how small these areas are but I'm happy with the end result. I also painted his boots using the same blueish dark grey I used on the storm bottler casing and the sword sheath. I like how this mini is turning out but it seems it's gona be time consuming. At least I'm getting over my fear of painting black (or very dark grey actually).

I'm gona set my goals low this time and hope I can meet them. I want to finish Yarrick, the Sister of Battle Serapheim and a Dreadknight till the end of the year. That's it, 3 minis! let's see if I can do it...

Sisters of Battle Seraphim

2011-08-25T19:23:00.000+03:00

Long time no post...

I decided to do some more work on the comissar today and paint the green laurels but unfortunately I spotted some air bubbles I had failed to notice when I was assembling the mini. So it was emergency greenstuffing for the commissar and no more painting.

Since I realy wanted to paint something I decided to start on another mini I had lying around. It is a Sisters of Battle Serapheim mini and it's quite special for 3 reasons:
1) I've never painted a Sisters of Battle mini before. I've painted minis from all 40k armies except Sisters of Battle so far.
2) It was the only Sisters of Battle mini left on my local gaming store.
3) A new Sisters of Battle codex has just been released.

Not much to see as only the armour and gloves are painted but still I like how the blue-black armour turned out.
