Frozen Planet Trailer

This is Frozen Planet, which I was working for a while there..

Should be going out on BBC One soon (Oct?).

I was taking and interpreting data from NASA and commercial satellite scans and turning them into accurate, explanatory yet aesthetically pleasing globe views.

I was assisted in the task by the excellent Jessica Lee.

There is one at the front of this trailer there, but it has been compressed to **** on the YouTubes, there are at least another 6 million shades of snow in there on the full HD version.

(All the animals are real, btw.)

Very proud to say I am a small part of the awesomeness that is the BDH graphics team on the BBC's Prof. Brian Cox, doe-eyed-lens-flare-fest, “Wonders of the Universe”.

I made particular contributions to star surfaces and coronal loops.

Here is an edit of all the graphics we produced for the series, with a soundtrack by Timo Baker.

This comes with a caution, as face melting may occur.

The 6 minute Moleskine

An assembly manual by Burningfp.

1. You will need:

2 sheets good quality A4 paper (150 gsm is good)

1 piece of recycled cardboard (Stella beer box card is thin and strong)

2 standard staples

Scissors, ruler, pencil and stapler.

2. Fold the paper in half, then fold back the other way, this then should make it easy to tear in half with a neat edge.

3. Repeat so, in the end, each sheet bears 4 strips.

4. Repeat on the other sheet so you end up with 8 strips.

5. Fold them all together in half, making booklet.

6. Make sure that crease is nice and sharp.

7. Using the booklet as a guide measure out a rectangle on the card to act as a cover. Give it an extra 5mm in width and 10mm in length to accommodate the edges and spine thickness.

8. Cut out the fucking card.

9. Making sure the edges are equal fold the cover around the booklet.

10. Using a thick carpet or plasticine as a base push two staple through the spine. Turn the book over and carefully bend the staples over as they should be, but use a tool, like a knife or something so you don't damage your beautiful fingers.

11. You can even cut the corners rounded just to look classy.

12. Bingo, it's flexible so will fit nicely in a back pocket, and is the perfect receptacle for notes on your next novel, concepts of social theory, life sketching, mind maps, crudely drawn genitalia etc etc.

Animated Journal Long Version

I've been keeping an Animated Journal over the last year.

I’ve always liked the picture a day format, video diaries etc, and animation is, traditionally a long drawn out, painful process, this is me trying to free it up and make it a bit more ephemeral.

Stan Brakhage said that he considered what he did to be his home movies and these follow a similar vein.

I generally capture whats going on around me and funnel it into 250 frames.

It's made using a variety of software & techniques including Maya, flip book drawings, After Effects, old cameras, roll film, digital photography and so on.

Largo from Concerto No. 1 in E major, Op. 8, “La primavera” (Spring).
A few years back we made projections for a live performance by the Emerald Ensemble of the "Four Seasons" by Vivaldi.
This is one I did for the second movement of Spring.
There was very little budget, so I spent a week or two listening to the piece over and over, when in the car, then did all the CGI work in less than 2 office days.
From the BDH website:
"Vivaldi wrote sonnets for each concerto in the Four Seasons. For this piece he wrote:

“And now, in the pleasant, flowery meadow, to the soft murmur of leaves and plants, the goatherd sleeps with his faithful dog at his side.”

Each musical element clearly illustrates a scene and the shapes in the animation reflects that."

1. Good Thing.

The Animate Journal was featured on the excellent 4mations website. They said:

"I’m not really sure what to make of Paul’s animated experiments but there is something hypnotic and mesmerizing about these snippets of life. It’s like dipping a toe in somebody else’s sensorial experience, vaguely voyeuristic without the seedy Big Brother connotations. Which is a good thing, because somehow I doubt an animator’s lifestyle could compete with the glossy glamour of watching a Z-list celebrity painting their toenails."

2. Not So Good Thing

The promising 5lights tumblr project ended this week. It was shaping up to be something very special, and I was due to be a Monday person on it for a month around autumn. I've started concocting four "pieces" and may follow through with these anyway.

All the best to Lou Noble and Katie West for their future projects.

At BDH we did the titles and content graphics for the BBC NHU series Yellowstone.

Using NASA Landsat and height data to create "shuttle-view" aerials, we had the pleasure of matching the mood and lighting of the amazing footage the team shot on location.

Final Delivery was in HD.
