I like seeing viewers pop up from around the world and I like to see more and more readers. Seriously, it's not because I think I'm a great writer...I really just like seeing the numbers climb...hey, I'm easily entertained.

So, with all of that said, I am moving our blog back to it's original spot at http://www.burningvapor.com. I'm still toying with themes and such, but this will be it's new, old location. If you have a blog, I would love for you to update the new address or add me to your reading list. See ya there!

GVFXCFV15819618

Bri's Custom Made Shanks coming to market soon. (1 John 1:9)

2. I read the Bible. Personally, I usually read through James or I will grab an epistle and let my mind be distracted from my bad day by someone elses bad day. This helps me. Sometimes I will take a picture of a verse on my phone and make it my screen saver. (James 4:13-17)

3. I get up and move. The absolute worst thing for me to do is close in on myself, sit in my office, or hide away. I get myself busy with something productive. This is another practical thing that helps stop my mind from going down a bad trail. By getting up and moving that means cleaning a particular part of the house, going for a walk or run, throwing frisbee, gardening, cutting grass, or even just standing outside in the sunshine.

4. I drink a little more coffee and eat a little more food. Just being honest, but coffee and food make me feel better. Sometimes I will even treat myself to a snickers bar...like yesterday, or a Mountain Dew, like today. This helps my energy level and helps with #3.

5. I tell someone. Usually I tell Jennifer. I need someone else to know that I'm struggling with life, sin, work, parenting, ministry, or whatever it may be. Jennifer has learned how to encourage me. She speaks truth to me. She asks me what things are dragging me down and I have trained myself to not cop out and say, "I don't know." (James 5:16)

6. I listen to music. Music is one of those things that lifts my spirits, and it really varies what type of music I may listen to.

And after all of that, I watch the video below. I watch it because it makes me smile. I need to smile. If not the video below, I'll watch something that will make me chuckle or at the minimum, smile. So that is what I do when I'm having a bad day...and I'm starting to feel a little better already. :)

I did a lot of sitting and listening last night. The hum of conversation was only interrupted by bold, deep laughter. Conversations revolved around parenting, struggles at work, gun preferences, politics, marriage struggles and celebrations, the preferred cigar and bourbon, funny work stories, and the list goes on. As I sat and listened I realized that this is exactly what guys need; a time to kick back, chat, and have dude conversations.

NCCwr Fight Clubs are designed for exactly that. In this setting we are given permission to talk about whatever we want and it's amazing to watch how the conversations unfold. Let's face it, we are guys, and for the most part we are NOT 'in touch with our feelings', nor do we have any desire to go there.

But at the same time we typically follow in the footsteps of our fathers and pretend like we have it altogether and would never have a conversation, freely, where we admit any kind of weakness.

Asking a question that reveals that you may not know how to do something is also a weakness we steer away from. Conversations about practical life issues ranged from growing strawberries to building chicken coops to the latest cross fit exercises. But guys are capable and aware that there are much deeper issues that lay in the heart and we are prone to bury those. Fight Clubs give an opportunity for those questions to be asked, answers to be given, and sin confessed. We do not like to admit that we struggle with our identity, we struggle with leading our wives and children, or when we have doubts about our faith. But we do and one of the few places we will ever admit that is a place where other guys are living similar lives. This is a place where guys are committed to fighting for their faith and encouraging others to do the same.

Jonathan Dodson says it like this:

[But] our spiritual war is a war against the flesh, that lingering vestige of our pre-Christian lives that must be beat to death so that we can live in the fullness of life given to us in Jesus (Romans 8:13)…The Apostle Paul says: ‘Fight the good fight of faith’ (1 Timothy 6:12). We are to beat the flesh in the power of the Spirit: ‘For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live’ (Romans 8:13). These texts call us to ‘fight’ and ‘put to death’ our sinful patterns of anxiety self-pity, anger, fear of man, vanity, pride, lust, greed, and so on. Upon becoming a Christian, we are inducted into a Fight Club, the Fight Club of faith.

So, if you are a part of New City Church Warner Robins, I encourage you to get involved in a Fight Club. Your Missional Community leader will be able to help you out. We meet corporately once a month and have a group on Facebook for events, so contact me or your MC Leader. If you are not a part of our church there are a few resources out there for you to get a Fight Club started in your own setting. Check em out and be prepared to take your walk with Jesus to a whole new level.

1. Yep. Gal. 4:5 says that if I have been redeemed, then I have been adopted by God as His son. Eph. 1:5 takes it a little bit further and says that God chose me for adoption before I ever knew Him. That is exciting news to me! To think that the Creator of all things chose someone as insignificant and broken as me makes me smile just thinking about it. Adoption is a beautiful act both spiritually and physically that is modeled perfecting by my God, and I like to talk about it!

My good friends, Chad and Joy Sylvester, have also been adopted and they are in the process of blessing someone else with this beautiful gift. The Sylvester's have been a part of New City Church for many years now and actually served on the team that planted New City Church Warner Robins.

They are blessing us by chronicling their journey, warts and all, at their blog. I would encourage you to be encouraged by their journey, pray for them, and share their journey with others. You can keep up with all that is going on in their lives here.

Here are a few ways from their blog that you can be praying for the Sylvesters:

Some practical ways to support us now?

#1-Pray. Pray that we would keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and trust Him as we wait. Pray that God would prepare our family for those children he wants to bring into our family. Thank God for the money we were able to raise and the dear friends/family who showed so much support! Thank God for work He has done in us this past year evidenced by this status I posted on Facebook on April 18th “A year ago today I truly experienced grief for the 1st time when our foster baby was placed elsewhere. So thankful that grief doesn't last forever & that God sees, knows, & cares for all parties involved. Today isn't as hard as I thought it would be. target="_blank">Keith Watson and it has been a great joy to serve in many roles and capacities. I am continually blown away by God's grace and goodness extended to His people at New City and remain so. I have seen God work in incredible ways and open up amazing opportunities to make His name known.

One of the cool things that has moved from me 'knowing' it to me 'understanding' it, is that the church does not belong to me or any man. The church is not my church, it belongs to Jesus. This is awesome on many levels and one of those reasons is because Jesus gives much better gifts than I can. He loves the church much more than I could ever dream and blesses far beyond my imagination. This announcement is an encouraging example of that.
<span style="background-color: white; target="_blank">Pete and Lori Smith. We have known Pete and Lori for many years and have been greatly blessed by their love for Jesus and their love for people. Their obedience to Jesus' call on their lives is what we strive to imitate.

Pete and Lori are moving their family to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to work with children living on the streets. They are not going for a vacation, they are not going for a short term mission trip, and they are not testing the waters of missions work. They are uprooting their family and planting new roots in the heart of Ethiopia. Pete has a well paying job, Lori is very involved in the community serving children in need of stable families, and their kids attend the local school and are involved in rec league sports. They are a very normal family. Pete is not losing his job, the house is not being foreclosed on and this is not a mid-life crisis.

The Smith family is one of those families that I love just listening to, because of their love for Christ. Pete loves the White Sox and Lori loves kids, but when you talk with them they love talking about Jesus. Their conversation centers on what God is doing, and how they see Him working and it just flows naturally. Their affection is contagious.

Strong Hearts that is doing incredible work bringing the Gospel. What I love about Strong Hearts is their desire to minister to the spiritual needs and physical needs of people in underprivileged areas. The Smiths are being sent by Commission to Every Nation and you can learn more about their journey on their personal website called More 2 Life.

I would encourage you to read about their journey and be challenged in your faith to faithfully follow Jesus wherever He may lead!

A Key to a Successful Marriage

I have had the great privilege of walking with many couples during very dark and difficult times in their marriage. This is always a special time for me, because Jennifer and I almost divorced in our first year of marriage; it was a dark and difficult time. So when I have the opportunity to counsel a couple I almost always take it.

One of the things that I eventually get to in our times together is evaluating their daily spiritual intimacy (if they are believers). I ask a few key questions like 1) How much daily, uninterrupted time do you spend with your spouse? 2) How much time do you spend together in daily prayer? 3) How much time do you spend reading the Bible together? Usually, those 3 questions get it kicked off. I have received push back about busyness, legalism, schedule conflicts, and the list goes on, but those are all just excuses.

Follow up questions are usually, "How much time do you spend on people, things, or events outside of your required work schedule?" or "Think back to the days leading up to your wedding and shortly after. Would you say you are more intimate and affectionate with your spouse now or then?" These are all just probing questions. While there is much to address in the answers that flow out of those questions, one of the things that we always talk about is what Jennifer and I call, Coffee Time.

There is nothing secret or magical to it. We set aside daily, uninterrupted time together. We have 6 kids ranging from ages 7 - 18, but uninterrupted still means uninterrupted. This has required training and retraining, but that is a standing expectation. What we do during that 30-45 minutes has looked different over the years. Sometimes we read through a book, read through a book of the Bible, have confession/forgiveness times, prayer, talk about the day, parenting, and we have used it to set family goals, revisit finances, and share funny stories from the prior day. The content is very flexible and changes depending on our needs in that season of life.

Here are 4 biblical principles why we have Coffee Time:

1. It is a great time to build oneness. - “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” (Ephesians 5:31 ESV)

I have found that one of the most difficult things is to build oneness in marriage. Dennis Rainey of Family Life says it like this, "A Oneness Marriage is formed by a husband and wife who are grafting intimacy, trust, and understanding with one another. It's a couple chiseling out a common direction, purpose, and plan. A Oneness Marriage demands a lifetime process of relying on God and forging an enduring relationship according to His design. It's more than a mere mingling of two humans—it's a tender merger of body, soul, and spirit."

2. It is a great time to freely talk about our pursuit of joy or lack thereof. - So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. (Philippians 2:1-2 ESV)

There is no greater opportunity than to take daily time to talk to your spouse about our satisfaction in each other in Jesus. This gives us opportunity to encourage one another by specifically identifying areas in which your spouse is growing. "Hey, I saw how you handled our daughter today, and I could really see the Lord using you in pointing her to Christ." These are words of gold and should be a part of our normal marital lives. It also gives us the opportunity to talk about our lack of joy and our need for our spouse to help us pursue Christ.

3. It is a great time to confess sin - I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV)

She sees my sins and faults because she most often experiences them. Meeting together everyday gives you opportunity to confess sins and ask for forgiveness. It also gives your spouse an opportunity to point out sinful habits, actions, or words and not in the heat of the moment. I know Jennifer has used this time in the past to graciously point out weaknesses in my character or in the leadership of the family.

4. It is a great time to evaluate how we are doing as parents. - Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:31-32 ESV)

I have found that one of the least asked questions is, "How can we parent our children in a more Gospel centered way?" I like to take Eph. 4:31-32 and ask myself how I am applying that passage to my children? Are they growing closer to or in a relationship with Jesus because of the way I parent them. When they see me do they see me as a Master, a neighborhood friend, or someone who is just uninvolved? Or do they see me as a parent who loves Jesus and works hard at treating them like God treats me?

If you ever asked us what are the top 5 things that have benefited you in marriage, Coffee Time would be in that top 5.

We Are Moving to Guatemala!

"We are moving to Guatemala to serve at Village of Hope and we are taking the whole family." These were some of the first words we heard when we sat down with our good friends Kiel and Carolyn Twietmeyer at Diamond Ethiopian Cuisine in Chicago. While it was new news, to be honest, it wasn't surprising. Kiel and Carolyn are ordinary people who are being obedient to the Lord's call and they are a huge blessing in our lives.

As I sat across the table from them I could see the gleam of joy of following Jesus and I was so excited just to hear about the Lord's work in bringing them to this decision.

"If we have learned anything, it’s that we serve a God with a plan! Our “yes” to adopting Rachel, Samuel, and Seth in 2007 was only the beginning." You can read about this incredible journey and the incredible plan here! You can also read about their full ministry at their site Project Hopeful.

"NEVER in our wildest imaginations did we think that the Lord’s perfect plan for our lives and for our family would include “scary” viruses and “extra” chromosomes. Through those challenges, He moved mountains, not only to glorify Himself, but to BOLDLY show Himself and His desires for His kids. While it is NOT always a cake walk, and the challenges are daily, our treasures were stored in DARK PLACES . . . places kept secret . . . hidden in institutions . . . shrouded in disease… But He says: “I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.” Isaiah 45:3 Who knew that something so hard could be so…….treasure-ish!"
<span style="background-color: style="background-color: white; line-height: 21px; orphans: 3; widows: 3;">These are people that God is using to help me think outside of myself, to be reminded of what He is doing in people like me. This is an extremely encouraging journey and I'm excited to get to watch, and pray, and join them as they continue reaching the forgotten. A huge thanks to Kiel and <a Our trip to Chicago was not what I planned - God used it for so much more. Spending time with people like Kiel and Carolyn and Pete and Lori really opened my eyes to all that God is doing and it is EXCITING! I feel like God lured me up to a graduation and then side slapped me back into reality. Heart renewed, faith challenged, prayers flowing.

What did God say? Well, nothing audible. It was more of a swelling movement in my heart. God was playing dominoes and I didn't see it until the last one fell.

The first domino was a conversation among the elders I serve with before we left for our trip. Ryan Lyons, lead pastor at New City Church Warner Robins, made a comment that when he reads a book, even if its bad, he tries to take something good from it. It wasn't the primary conversation we were having. Nothing else was said about it. It was a simple statement that God used to flick the first domino. Do I look for the good in things or am I the consummate cynic? Can I learn something from just about anything, or am I ready to shoot anything down that doesn't line up with my theological framework? I knew the answer and it bothered me.

The second domino was during our drive to Chicago and tied to the counseling certification that I am going through. As a part of the certification I have the great privilege of listening to some very wise people. During one of the lectures one of the speakers made another very simple statement. "You must obey God, even if you don't feel like it." He then went on to list an avalanche of calls to obedience. It was a gut check. I have been justifying far too much and it has diminished my faith. I am no longer the man who flies by the seat of his pants and is eager to do whatever God has called. I no longer hear from God. I felt sickened and had to rub tears from my eyes while blaming it on my allergies.

The third domino was in Chicago. Shortly after entering the city we were honked at and a guy drove up to our window to make sure we heard him say "F U". I responded with unbridled rage and was ready to beat the...well, it was not God honoring. "You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34, ESV)" The verse came to me clear as day and I was distracted for the rest of the night. No, the man did not need my rage, he needed Jesus.

The fourth domino was conversations with Kiel and Carolyn Twietmeyer and Pete and Lori Smith. They are dear friends who I greatly admire and respect. We met both of them through the adoption community and quickly became kindred spirits. They exuded faithful joy. Their words dripped like honey with the praise of Jesus and all that He has been doing. I was simply caught up in hearing about San Lucas, Guatemala and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At one point in one of the conversations one of them was sharing their excitement in operating out of simple faith and not being concerned with the foolishness of man opinions. And then he said, "but I guess I don't need to explain that to you, because that is exactly how you live and we love you guys for it." I wanted to cry and throw up all at the same time. I smiled on the outside and died on the inside. I wanted to say, "No friend, my faith has shriveled, and I have become comfortable."

The fifth domino was the commencement message at Moody. My thoughts were everywhere that morning and to be honest I couldn't pay attention to anything that was said. In fact, my son Caleb talked my ear off about the message when I got home and I only vaguely recognized some of the points. But one caught my attention. "What will you take from here?" He was specifically talking about college student's time at Moody, but I knew God was saying something else to me. "Patrick, I am longsuffering, and I am extending grace to you, again. What will you take from this trip? Have you heard me?" Again, tears fell freely. "Yes, Lord I hear you, but I am ashamed?" "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.(Matthew 11:28-30, ESV)” I smiled. I probably looked like an idiot because the speaker was talking about something heavy at the time, but I smiled. It is true. God is gracious and merciful. I repented.

The last domino to drop was the constant conversation with Jennifer. We were able to communicate clearly to one another what God was saying and what He was not saying. We were able to talk about our personal walks with God, and failures and this burning desire to be in Jesus' presence. I want to spend more time talking to Jesus and reading the Word, not because I feel guilty or feel a need for checking boxes...I just miss sitting at the feet of Christ and enjoying Him. We were able to talk about parenting and areas in which we have failed our kids. We were able to talk about ministry at church and why God has us where He has us. We were able to talk about freeing ourselves from the entanglements of this world and being available to be used by God as He sees fit. We were able to confess sins and renew our commitment to one another and to Jesus. It was a sweet trip.

So, now we are back. The trip is over and the "camp high" could begin to fade. But there is no camp high. There is a renewed love for Jesus and a desire for those around us to know and love Jesus. There is also a burden for people. Walking the streets of Chicago made me long for the city. The sights and sounds. The mass of humanity. There is this piece of me that longs to live in the city, learn the city, and share the Gospel in the city. My time in Chicago has increased my love for my own city here in Warner Robins. It renewed my heart for Missional Communities and pushed my thinking in how we can be more involved in the city. Warner Robins is a very different place than Chicago, and while a part of me longs to live in a city like Chicago, Jesus has called me here, now. Jesus has called me to follow Him wherever He may lead me. And with that, I am very satisfied.
