IMPORTANT WINTER SPORTS INFORMATION NIGHT

The mandatory winter sports parent/ athlete meeting will be held Thursday November 12th 6:00 in the following locations:
Boys Basketball- Hunter Seminar room
Alpine Skiing- Gym
Nordic Skiing- Wellness classroom off from the gym lobby

November 16th All winter sports begin practice.

All freshmen and transfer students who did not play a fall sport will need a physical exam prior to participating. All returning students must have had a physical exam after March 2008.
Physical forms and permission forms can be downloaded from the schools web site, burrburton.org. These completed forms must be brought to the meeting on November 12th or mailed (attn. Kathi Bierwirth) to the school before November 12th (please identify the sport on the form).

Free Computers

Students in Kevin Morrison’s Hardware and Networking class have been putting their new skills to practical use for the community. There are currently twelve Dell computers available for students and families who do not have a computer or who want to have a computer just for experimenting with new software.

The refurbished computers have 15-inch flat screen monitors and are loaded with the Linux operating system, which is less hardware intensive than Windows and is free.

The free computers do not have any warranty, but they can be used as stand-alone workstations and be connected to the Internet.

Plans are to re-build upward of two dozen more computers for the community and for charities responsible for bringing technology to schools without computers.

Dear Burr and Burton Community:

After much deliberation, we have decided to cancel classes for Thursday and Friday. Afternoon activities today will continue as scheduled. Administrative, Guidance, Business, Advancement and Maintenance operations will remain open on Thursday and Friday. The decision to cancel classes is based on the continued high absentee rate among students, the rising rate of faculty illness, and the logistical difficulties presented by running a school at such diminished capacity.

There are a number of postponements or cancellations as a result of this decision:
- All athletic contests on Thursday will be rescheduled as follows: Varsity Girls Soccer will play at Rutland Saturday at 4 pm. JV Gold Girls Soccer will play at Rutland on Monday at 4 PM.
- All sports practices are canceled for Thursday. Practices may resume Friday afternoon after 2 PM.
- Friday evening's Calliope Cafe will be rescheduled.
- Fall play rehearsal is canceled for Thursday. Rehearsal may resume Friday afternoon after 2 PM.
- Refuse to Use events on campus will be rescheduled

The following events are NOT effected by this decision:
- Friday night's football game against U32 will be played as scheduled.
- Saturday's Varsity and JV Boys Soccer games will be played as scheduled.
- Mid-term exams will remain as scheduled. Teachers will be encouraged to help students catch up next week and adjust their exams to recognize the diminished capacity for learning over these past few days.
- ACTs on Saturday will remain as scheduled.

The character of a community is revealed in difficult times, and I am happy to say that this community is showing its strength. Faculty members have filled in for each other during their free periods, students have adjusted to substitute teachers and smaller classes, and parents have overwhelmingly been supportive of our efforts to minimize the spread of infection.

I often say that there is nothing more important than education, but in this case, there actually is: the health and safety of this community. I encourage all students to use these next two days in productive ways, and I look forward to a return to normalcy on Monday.

Burlington Taiko Drummers Oct. 15 in Riley Center

Burlington Taiko Drummers will be performing on Thursday night, October 15, in the Riley Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm. During their weeklong residency, the Taiko Drummers have given workshops for over 250 students. Many of the students who participated in the workshops will join the group for the public performance. This is a collaborative project between Burr and Burton’s Social Studies Department, the Mark Skinner Library, and GRASP (Greater Rutland Asian Studies Project) and is supported by the Elizabeth DeC. Wilson Endowment Fund for the Arts at Burr and Burton.

Booster Club Looking for Parent Assistance

Last year, thanks to the efforts of the Burr and Burton Booster Club and numerous volunteers, we had a very successful and fun homecoming weekend. We would like to build on that success and stage another big weekend this year. On Thursday we will have a School Spirit Parade, a cookout, and bonfire. On Saturday beginning at noon, the Booster Club will be hosting a chicken barbeque on the main field. The last event planned for the day is a dance for the students sponsored by the Student Council and Parents’ Association. Naturally, we need parent and student volunteers to work the concessions at the different sporting events but we also need the parents to contribute food for the Thursday night BBQ, which will be free of charge to all students. Below is a list of the items we need:

o Hot Dogs: 600
o Hot Dog Rolls: 50 dozen
o Chips: individual portion packages
o Condiments
o Desserts: cookies and brownies
o Bottled water:40 cases
