Bursaries

Bursaries are another way to help pay for your college education, and are distinct in their differences from other common forms of financial aid such as scholarships. Coming in many different forms, the most common form of bursary often uses academic merit combined with family income to determine an amount for assistance and do not have to be repaid. These sorts of bursaries should serve as a first stop for many students seeking monetary aid for school, especially those coming from low-income families. It is common for income-based bursaries to be offered by colleges or by the government, attempting to bridge the gap between rich students with ready access to school and those from less fortunate families who may otherwise not be able to attend college.

Other forms of bursaries are offered by non-profit organizations or businesses, often given in exchange for work by the student. Bursaries are hotly sought after, and as a result, students should assess their own standing and apply for them as early as possible.

Bursaries offered by colleges tend to be need based, but also hold an academic standard. Students failing to adhere to a specified grade point average may quickly find their access to future funds stifled, so maintaining a strong academic record will only help make future funds available. As a result, college oriented bursaries are both need and merit based. Showing a financial need based not only on individual cases but also that of an applicant’s family is quite common. Once a bursary has been awarded, the merit shown through scores and grading will help determine future disbursements. Different amounts awarded will vary based on income and by geographic region. For example, students in Canada will not find bursary awards given out based on the same income situation as those from London, and students from each area should consult their individual bursary offices for available standards.

Some student bursaries are offered by non-profits or businesses and often require service for the award offered. This service may come in the form of volunteer activities, internments or promising to work for a specified amount of time after graduation. Because of the amounts that are typically offered in these student bursaries, it is not surprising to find that they are highly sought after by students and as such are very competitive. Based on merit, a bursary from a non-profit or business will look at the sorts of activities students are involved in or what basic skills they may already possess. Students who receive a bursary and then promise time worked after graduation should be keenly aware that they are legally obligated by the terms of their contracts to carry out said work, and failing to do so may result in having to repay the award. Should a student find suddenly that they would like to receive a bursary from another company, it would be wise to consult with the new business and explore the possibility of them buying out their previous obligations, thus clearing the way for them to make work promises to the new provider.

It is important to explore what bursaries you may have available to you and apply for as many as possible to better increase both your chances and access to funding. Like scholarships, bursaries come in many forms offering a wide variety to students from diverse backgrounds. Students going to school to become teachers will find bursaries available specifically to them, and the same can be said for engineering students as well as those from many other fields.

If you come from an economically disadvantaged background, stopping into your college’s bursary office should be your first step in applying for financial aid. Applying for bursaries outside with businesses or non-profits is based more in competition, so if you are able to apply for an income-based bursary, it is in your best interest to take advantage of it.

If you work somewhere currently, you should consider checking with your human resources department to see if they offer a bursary program. The same goes for any organizations you volunteer with, as it never hurts to ask.

Bursaries Direct from College

When students look for educational bursaries to help pay college cost, they should always apply directly through the college since many universities have bursaries as part of their student financial aid packages which are offered to all who qualify for them.

Many students search out private bursaries to apply to which is always good to do, but they may be better off applying to the the college bursary programs. Colleges and Universities need students attending to survive in the first place and no students equals; no school.

The college will work harder to award bursaries to students for this reason alone. They have a vast array of bursaries for many student financial situations and are eager to award educational bursaries so their attendance is secure and growing.

You must ask and apply in the financial aids office of the college you will be attending.

This fact alone can insure students who are looking for bursaries that they will get a thorough evaluation of all and any bursary program they can fit into at any college they apply to for bursaries.

Bursaries & Scholarships from Universities

We will look at a few bursaries given out from Canadian Universities since they have more programs which are more favorable to all types of students; even international and out of country students. Canada works hard on out of country students in getting them to attend their universities and they have government, as well as direct university bursaries to do it too!

St. Lawrence College in Ontario Canada, is a college of Applied Arts & Technology that has (3) campuses in Eastern Ontario – Brockville, Cornwall & Kingston, boost that because of the generosity of former alumni, corporations, Foundations & friends in their community they have a large amount of student financial aid (bursaries & scholarships) in helping students attend their school. I’m sure that former alumni remember what it was being a college student and how hard it was paying for it never having any money and racking up their student loans every year.

St. Lawrence College bursaries for college range from $500 to $3000 and awarded 500 plus bursaries to their students. All students have to do is fill out their bursary application once to be considered for a plethora of their bursary programs they have available to award students each and every college semester.

That’s an easy way to search for bursary financial aid at a University!

Carleton University located in Ottawa Ontario is a dynamic research and teaching institution dedicated to achieving the highest standards; has a nice list of bursaries through their bursary look up search tool.

It’s easy to use too!

Students can choose from a drop down bar in the category field of study menu and search for their desired bursaries from Carleton University.

This makes it simple and easy for students looking for a particular educational bursary. Carleton state’s that students are considered for all the bursaries listed in their category selected by filling out the general bursary application form. So students only have to select a category and all bursaries that are in that category they are considered for.

This is a classic example of what was mentioned earlier in that colleges/universities want/need students attending their campuses purely to survive so they will do everything they can to accommodate them all in possible ways. This is how they do it.

Student fill out ONE general bursary application form and the search tool does all the work looking for a bursary program(s) that the student will fit into. This is how Carleton University makes sure no student gets overlooked for student financial aid – it’s all done automatically.

Carleton University is one place to look if you want to find educational bursaries to pay for your college.

Humber College located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning; and a publicly-funded polytechnic college offers bursaries to their students. They categorize them as:

Tuition Bursaries
Financial Need Bursaries
Ontario First Generation Bursaries
Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Bursaries
Student Access Bursaries
Study Abroad/International Mobility Bursaries

As you can see the more categories you have, the more students you can fit into them so as to award more Humber bursaries to students so the can attend the Humber University. Sometimes students can fit into multiple categories (if allowed by the university) giving them more student aid, making it possible to cover all their student cost.

Queen’s University at Kingston is a public research university located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in October 1841 from a royal charter issued by Queen Victoria. Queen’s university predates the founding of Canada by 26 years! They have a Queen’s General Bursary which helps those students with the greatest financial need. They also have what is called Admission Bursaries which are based on financial need.

Other categories of Queen’s University bursaries are:

Bursary for mature students
Admission bursaries for Law students
Admission bursaries for Medicine students

As you can see the Admission bursary is to help first year students, and the others are more specific in nature. Since they are bursaries, all will use a financial needs scale to some degree then others and my differ based on what the demonstrated financial need is of each individual student.

Queen’s offers numerous scholarship programs too as well as bursary programs as well. Both do the same thing in paying for a students college cost and they don’t have to be paid back.

*As a final note, it should be mentioned that Government bursaries should always be applied to by all students looking for bursary programs along with the above mentioned bursaries. Go to government bursaries from other countries, and government bursaries and how they work.

The post Bursaries Direct from College first appeared on Bursaries.co.

International students looking to get their education in other countries want to look into the individual countries government bursaries to cover their cost to attend a college or university. Most all do have student bursaries with some type of student aid to help do this.

You may be just a regular student who is just looking for bursaries from your own government – this will also help you too!

Seeking direct government educational assistance in the form of bursaries, or other student financial aid offered by the various governments is the smart students way to pay for an education in other countries.

If students know where to apply, it may be as easy as filling out & submitting the required paperwork to receive student bursaries, grants, scholarships or other forms of student awards offered by governments throughout the world.

Some countries may use the terminology as bursaries, or scholarships & grants. They all mean the same thing – no repayment is necessary by the student once they are given the student financial aid award.

Below are various countries and their respective website locations to help students seek bursaries and other various forms of educational financial assistance to cover the cost of attendance.

Scholarships and Bursaries from Canada

Canada’s Provinces and Territories handle their bursaries and student aid separate, and at the same time also have access to a central bursary system for their students. Below we cover these.

Other Canadian Bursaries from CanLearn

CanLearn.ca is a service for Canadian students which provides the student aid information and other needed services so they can decide what field to study, what university to go to study and how to cover their costs.

CanLearn strives to offer trusted information & services to help Canadian students save, plan & finally pay for their education. CanLearn gives necessary resources to help students to masterfully make good educational decisions.

The CanLearn site was developed by the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments and Canadian learning and career development organizations.

Alberta Bursaries

A bursary is a monetary grant given to a student based on a demonstrated financial need or satisfactory academic achievement. Scholarships are a monetary award given to a student for academic excellence in a specific area of study, or for athletic excellence.

Ontario Bursaries

For a resource on Canadian bursaries from Ontario.

OSAP Canada Bursaries

When students apply for OSAP student aid assistance they are automatically evaluated for many grant & bursary programs offered by the federal & provincial government. Whether students are awarded the grant funds, it will depend on an eligibility criteria which will include student family income tiers. This is a great Canadian resource for students looking for student financial assistance.

Concordia University Bursries

This university nicely displays bursaries & student aid by Canadian Provincial & Territory so students can easily navigate for what they are looking for based on location and aid provided.

Study in Sweden Bursaries & Scholarships

Swedish scholarships are similar to bursaries. This website is a all-inclusive resource for higher education in Sweden for current & prospective international students. Many other scholarships are offered on this site too.

South African Bursaries

This is the official website of South Africa which has a comprehensive list of a multitude of South African bursaries and it is nicely categorized based on what occupation a student would like to study. For instance they have a listing of accounting/Law/Engineering/Health-science/Sport bursaries just to name a few. They have many others though.
Go to: http://bursaries-southafrica.co.za/ to see their home page which is impressively laid out!

United Kingdom Bursaries

This UK government website talks about bursaries and scholarships but one must search to find what they are looking for. Best suggestion is to type in ‘bursaries’ in the search bar in the upper right corner and you will find what you are looking for in the search results which come up.

Ireland Bursaries

The nidirect website is the official government website for Northern Ireland citizens. This website was designed to make things easier to find for the user; such as easy to access government information and services. Bursaries and financial aid can easily be found too.

Western Cape Bursaries

The official Western Cape Government website was created as a single point of access to government information & services for citizens of the Western Cape. Lots of government bursaries are offered, along with a listing of universities offering them too. A list of bursaries from National Departments, Public Entities, and International are shown as well. Other programs are offered to students such as Learner-ships, Internships, Apprenticeships, and Artisan-ships. Places of Volunteering to charitable organizations are also listed.

The above is a great starting point in helping students look for government bursaries offered from other countries.

The post Government Bursaries offered from Various Countries first appeared on Bursaries.co.

The Kin Canada Bursaries Program is a program that generates funds for college. Those funds come from the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund. The program is designed to promote college education and to encourage students to find a way to pay for their education to make their dreams come true. Over $732,000 has been awarded since the scholarship fund was implemented in 1994. This scholarship fund was the vision of Hal Rogers and his belief that promoting the education of our youth is a very noble endeavor.

Each year, they receive over 600 applications for the funds. All applicants must be residents of Canada. They must demonstrate a financial need, show community volunteer involvement, and have some knowledge of Kin Canada.

They award the money to the top 35 applications, with each winner receiving $1,000 for college. The winner are selected based on their community involvement and academic performance. Due to the generous nature of many of the clubs involved, the program seems to be doing well in terms of generating more money for future scholarships to be awarded.

Applications are completed and submitted online. It is possible to complete it all at once or to start it and save it, then return to it later on for completion. They are due by February 1st. In some years, there are more winners than others. It depends on the overall available funds that are given to the Kin Canada Bursaries Program to work with. There seems to be a good response though to this fund and so far generating enough funding for the scholarships hasn’t been a barrier for the entity.

Applications are reviewed locally and then the top ones are sent to be reviewed by a committee who will pick the winners of the scholarship funds. All winners will be notified by June 30th. Part of the Kin Canada Bursaries Program involves generating more interest out there among students for these funds. Part of their ability to do this involves working closely with the various schools and getting the message out soon enough about what is offered and how to apply.

There is a revised application for the 2013 and 2014 scholarship funds. While the majority of it will be the same, there are some additional sections to be completed. All applications must be complete in order to be reviewed for consideration of the scholarship funds that are available. Anyone needed help with the application can call or email the contact information found on the website for the Kin Canada Bursaries Program.

The post Kin Canada Bursaries Program first appeared on Bursaries.co.

University of Victoria Bursaries

With the help of UOV Bursaries for college, you may have the connection you need to finish paying for your education. The University of Victoria offers over $4 million annually through this program, which is a huge contribution for the students. If you aren’t familiar with a bursary, it is a grant that doesn’t have to be repaid and this is what students should continuosly look for to help them pay for their college.

UOV bursaries are based on financial need as the primary factor so applicants DO need to complete worksheets and supply documentation of their income. Qualifying for student loans, work study, or other scholarships won’t prevent you from qualifying for a UOV bursary. The funds are in place to help offset the cost of college when it is going to prevent someone from being able to attend.

The University of Victoria does all it can to make sure students are able to get a quality education and that they are able to find a way to pay for attending. They offer more than 100 education programs including those on campus and online. They are well recognized for the quality of their programs, dedication to details, and offering the best teaching faculty available. They continue to get rave reviews for their graduate, undergraduate, and off campus programs by employers who feel graduates of UOV have the skills to do very well on the job.

Qualifications for University of Victoria Bursaries

In order to qualify for UOV bursaries for school, you need to be in an undergraduate program or graduate program. You must be enrolled at least part time. You also have to be receiving the maximum student loans that are available. There are limited funds for International students offered. If you fall into this category, it is recommended that you speak to someone in financial aid to see what they may be able to offer you.

University of Victoria bursaries come with GPA standards, and that is very important to understand. You aren’t competing with others to get these funds. If you meet all of the criteria including the GPA you can get the funds. You can also qualify for renewal up to five years in most instances. The difference with a bursary and a scholarship is that if you meet the qualifications, you get the money. You aren’t competing against an unknown number of people who have also applied for a limited amount of money. If there are 100 people that qualify for the UOV bursaries funds they get them, and if there are only 10 people that qualify then they will get them.

There are different application deadlines in place for UOV bursaries funds for college, so don’t miss them. June 1st is the application deadline for the summer session. October 15th is the deadline for the winter session. Only ONE application is necessary for the year, and it can be completed and submitted ONLINE. It is a good idea to complete the application even if you will only qualify for a small amount of money through the program.

There are additional applications required for some of the special university bursaries that UOV offers. For example, if you want to quality for one that pertains to athletics, faculty, or a specific school department there can be additional forms and deadlines to adhere to. The school administration can assist you with those details.

UOV Bursary Awards

The amount of money that you will be awarded depends on the school. Generally, the more expensive the school is the higher it will be. This is to help reduce the overall shortfall that a student may have between financial aid and the cost of attendance. The awards can be in monetary terms, books, memberships, and more that will be directly filtered to your account through the school you are attending.

UOV Disability Bursaries

There is additional assistance through UOV bursary funds for college if you have a documented disability. Such individuals may be able to qualify for the funds even if they are attending college less than half time. There is a special application that needs to be filled out in such a situation.

Explore how UOV bursaries for college may help you to open the door for college to be in your future! This is a great school and one that really strives to make sure all students that wish to attend are able to do so. They enjoy rewarding those that are making excellent academic progress for their hard work.

The post UOV Bursaries for College first appeared on Bursaries.co.

NMMU Bursaries has Scholarships to Consider

There are funds through NMMU bursaries and scholarships because they feel that investing in the future of people is well worth it. They don’t view college as an expense but as a great investment that can make a difference. People that have a degree tend to earn more and they also seem to be happier because they go to work every day doing something that they love.

What are NMMU Bursaries?

If you aren’t familiar with the meaning of the letters, they stand for Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. This bursary is offered for students that attend the university. They also need to specialize in the B Ed or PGCE degree program that this university offers. Students that receive it will be required to teach for the same number of years that they got it at a public school. The maximum term for receiving the bursary is four years. This program is available to African Americans that live in South America.

Sources of Funding for NMMU Bursaries

The different sources of funding affect the amount of money offered through these bursaries and scholarships. The awards are also often financial need based. It is important to know that they aren’t government funded though. This means you could still qualify for some forms of financial aid through those government programs in addition to any bursaries.

Applying for NMMU Bursary Funds

Depending on the source of the funding, you may have to apply for NMMU bursaries funds or you may not. Sometimes, they are combined with your other financial aid forms. You just sign to give your consent that you agree for that information to be shared for determining eligibility for bursaries. Some schools do require a separate application though so you need to ask about this. You also need to find out when the deadline is so that you don’t miss getting your application submitted.

The Sepp Blatter Scholarship

This is a scholarship for African American students that show significant financial need. The funds can be quite substantial but they will go to those that show the best potential and the most need for the funds. The amount depends on the funding that is in place at that time.

Joshua Fullard Research Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to students that have a high GPA and that have significant financial need. There is an application that needs to be completed, but the deadline can vary based on the school. Make sure you ask about this particular program if you are in dire need of money to pay for your education. These funds vary in amount, but they are often very generous in terms of the amount dispersed.

Postgraduate NMMU Bursaries

Many of the NMMU bursaries offered are for postgraduate students. The funds are often dispersed for those that are studying in the areas of research and development. The amount of money available depends on the funding for that year and the number of applicants. The award amount also depends on the financial need of the recipient or recipients.

The post NMMU Bursaries from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University first appeared on Bursaries.co.

The bursaries take into account the dynamic needs of students to ensure that all students funded by the firm have what they need in order to successfully complete their studies. The skills required in the professional services workplace are also taken into account.

In order to apply for the Pure Merit Bursary or the Merit Bursary with Financial needs, applicants must meet certain criteria. In addition to studying for a SAICA recognized degree, applicants must be engaged in full-time study, must be completing their degree in the minimum number of years and must have an academic average of at least 65%. Students must maintain their academic achievements in order to continue receiving the bursary. Students will need to complete a training contract when applying for a KPMG bursary.

Along with the bursary for students in South Africa, KPMG also offers a bursary for students in the Channel Islands. This bursary is available to students who demonstrate they have a wide range of abilities and skills and who also possess the motivation to study towards receiving a tax qualification or accountancy following completion of their degree. KPMG offers paid work experience, financial support and student mentor support throughout the completion of their three year degree. Students who receive a tax or accountancy bursary will also benefit by establishing a professional relationship with a local employer. This will assist students in developing an understanding of how KPMG works in the islands, while also offering an understanding of the necessary professional qualifications for their future career endeavors.

The KPMG bursary program is structured to assist students by covering a portion of their books, accommodations and tuition fees. Bursaries are specifically designed to take the dynamic needs of students into account to ensure that students funded by the firm have what they need in order to successfully complete their studies.

The internal audit graduate program at KPMG is specifically designed to ensure students are fully prepared for a career in Internal Audit or IA. The IA field provides specialist services in enterprise risk management, corporate governance and internal auditing.

Not only do students receive the financial assistance they need through KPMG bursaries for accounting to complete their education, but they also receive the opportunity to engage in a stimulating and exciting experience that will equip them with the skills they need for their future career goals. The mentoring program also provides an avenue for positive feedback and career counseling. Furthermore, the initial three year training period provides graduates with both practical and formal training opportunities to enhance their overall skill sets.

The post KPMG Bursaries Offer Educational and Career Assistance first appeared on Bursaries.co.

The Bursary Institute of South Africa helps to address the educational needs of students in South Africa by providing a bursary program that allows students to save, plan and then pay for educational opportunities throughout South Africa. The Institute has established partnerships with a number of learning institutions and provides students access to a large number of courses through their bursary program. The courses cover diplomas and degrees across a wide array of professions. Once all application requirements have been satisfied, students are guaranteed to receive a bursary. The amount of the bursary may range between 25% and 100%.

By establishing a partnership with numerous training colleges, the Institute is able to offer an extensive array of educational opportunities to meet the diversified needs of students throughout South Africa. The objective of The Bursary Institute of South Africa is to help bridge the current gap between today’s youth, schools and the employment sector. Through a belief that education is still a vital element in obtaining access to employment, improved quality of life, economic prosperity and personal fulfillment, the organization hopes to help achieve growth for all citizens of South Africa.

The Institute also works to provide South African youth with services and information regarding post-matric studies, as well as assistance in decision making regarding what and where they should study.
During the post-Apartheid era in South Africa, the education system has experienced significant reforms in order that educational opportunities can be distributed more equitably to all citizens. In spite of improvements made in educational levels and literacy rates, significant numbers of young people continue to leave school each year lacking the critical skills necessary compete for employment. Only approximately 15% of the students who wrote final exams in South Africa in 2007 scored high enough in order to automatically qualify to attend university. Many more students remained at home due to in inability to pay expensive tuition fees. The ultimate goal of the Bursary Institute of South Africa is to fill the skills gap by making post school studies accessible at either a reduced cost or no cost through their bursary program.

Through the Institute’s program, students in South Africa gain the chance to further their studies through an FET college of their own choice by selecting a degree or diploma at a price they can afford. The Bursary Institute of South Africa structures a bursary that is specific to each person’s individual needs. Individuals who failed to graduate or dropped out of school are also provided with the opportunity to gain certain bursaries as well. Some bursaries are available for matric re-writes, financial sector and call center qualifications; where a matric pass may not be required. The balance of fees for a degree or diploma after the bursary from the BISA may be paid on installment payments; ensuring education remains affordable and accessible to all learners in South Africa.

The post Bursary Institute of South Africa Makes Education Affordable first appeared on Bursaries.co.
