<itunes:summary>In being careful to avoid a monarchy or dictatorship, America’s founders adamantly insisted on each government agency being independent. The Federal Communications Commission act of 1934 was created to ensure that the public would have access to news without threat of censorship or control by the executive. As he follows the Project 2025 playbook for controlling what has always been a free press, the Trumpized FCC is beginning a very dangerous overreach. On this show TV news veteran Emily Barr sheds light on the threats to our treasured freedom of the press posed by the Trump Administration. Are we willing to accept news as only what Trump wants us to hear? It looks bad now but there is reason for hope.
</itunes:summary>

On this show, Richard Eskow, former head writer for the Bernie 2016 campaign explains how it seems candidates would rather lose than change their “business model,” which he defines. As this is written, Bernie is drawing thousands in red states. Revive the 99%, the producer class, link up at the community level. And in developing nations to which big corporations outsource jobs, it’s mere pennies. These are clearly not livable wages. Our guest Professor Lawrence Wittner argues in a widely published article it’s just sound sustainable economics to institute a world-wide minimum wage. Poverty wages do not keep foreign economies strong. And no, consumer prices don’t automatically rise with a global minimum wage. And, in this discussion, he explains how a global minimum wage keeps jobs in America.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>In the wake of the shocking presidential election, we Democrats now have an opportunity and an obligation. Once again, the heartland of America saw the Democratic Party as two-coast elitists. Our guest today, veteran political organizer Bob Creamer says despite the Trumpists scapegoating The Others as the cause of the average family’s pain, we need to aggressively identify the real cause of that pain. Since 1973 the income of the wealthiest has shot up much faster than everybody else. Democrats need to listen to Bernie Sanders and put it out there. We should lead with economics, while defending our freedoms and rights. The public is with us on so many issues. Courage is needed now more than ever.
<itunes:summary>In light of the Israeli state’s massive assault on Gaza, and now Lebanon, the question comes up: What does it mean to be a Jew? Our guest veteran New York Times sportswriter Robert Lipsyte says being a Jew entails certain responsibilities and obligations; that beneath it all, Jews have to believe in justice. We always have. We were necessarily there in the civil rights movement of the 60s and we must continue. There have been “bad Jews” like Kissinger and Netanyahu who he says betray our identity. He argues the holocaust can not be a “get out of everything” card. And with two Jews talking, the both of us, expect good entertainment in the discussion.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>They love to say America has the strongest military of any nation ever. But boasting usually leads to disaster. On this show, we hear from William J. Astore, a retired lieutenant colonel of the US Air Force and professor of history at the Air Force Academy and the Naval postgraduate school. His essay is entitled “From the Arsenal of Democracy to an Arsenal of Genocide; The Pernicious Price of Global Reach, Global Power, and Global Dominance.” Our overreaction to 9/11, projecting power across the globe, has brought no victories and less freedom at home: the so-called Patriot Act and the surveillance state. He wonders if their can be a soft landing or if a collapse is in the cards. What a price we pay.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>History professor Matt Warshauer argues in his new book that the 9/11 generation is the most unique in American history, and he explains how. The title is Creating and Failing the 9/11 Generation. This generation has seen a nonfunctional government, chaos across the world, and with little knowledge of foreign policy history, is just starting to learn why 9/11 happened. Warshauer argues that the moment which is bringing this generation together was their reaction to the Parkland shooting. They’re getting involved these days in community, where they had felt isolated. On this podcast, he explains reasons for hope.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>He got 81% of the evangelical vote in key swing states in 2016. Our guest today the Reverend Doug Pagitt is exceptionally familiar with what goes on with evangelical Christians, and he says he expects Trump to get less than that this year and that will make all the difference. So why have so many evangelicals adored Trump, considering how un-Christ-like he is? He says a big part of it was the elitism and disrespect for average rural people by both Obama and Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump made them feel good about themselves. But things are shifting; Pagitt says evangelicals care about kindness and, along with many others, there is Trump fatigue among evangelicals, especially white men. Unraveling the mystery of Trump’s appeal to Christians.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>Since at least 2016, the Democratic policy has been driven by big contributors, yielding rural voters to Trump who at least pretended to hear them. With Minnesota Governor Tim Walz nominated as VP for Harris, middle America people who had been looked down on have a new reason to come back to the Democratic fold. On this show, rural Michigan based Roger Kerson, who writes for Barnraisermedia.org, tells listeners about the unique spirit of rural people: they look out for one another and, unlike the isolated rest of us, they gather a lot. At last moving beyond the donor class, can the new ticket reconnect with the middle and win back the White House and possibly Congress?
</itunes:summary>

America’s love affair with locking people up made the pandemic needlessly worse. Give a listen!
<itunes:summary>We were taught in elementary school that every vote counts in America. But as we all know the 2016 winner of the popular vote did not become president. The truth is the presidential candidates will spend a billion dollars this year to reach just 1/5 of voters. The candidates spend 96% of their time on niche voters in twelve states. Do you think that’s OK? On this show, Alyssa Cass of the National Popular Vote organization offers some realistic hope of reinvigorating democracy. It’s not a pipe dream, they are really close to making the popular vote the determinant. Listen in to see what you can do to make it reality.
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>As Trump heads into the 2024 campaign, you might wonder who is behind it, who benefits from destroying our republic. Here is the story. The religious nationalists see him as a fierce leader. They believe God sends such kings to rule us. Author Katherine Stewart explains the mystery of why they punch above their real political weight in this discussion of her new book The Power Worshippers; Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism. She explains that this new nationalism is part of far right ethno-states emerging worldwide. Distinct from the culture wars of the past, this is a political war, with churches being used for political organizing. The cultural struggles, such as abortion and gay rights, were seized upon as a way to create this new nationalism which is ensconced in the White House, the Dept of Justice, the Dept of Education, etc. Traditional Americans can,and must fight back and win. (This show is from 2020 but it’s still dangerously relevant).
</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>It’s not high on people’s reason to choose a president, but the power of pardons today is often corrupt and the promise of a pardon has been known to encourage crimes. In this discussion of her forthcoming book, Law Professor Kimberly Wehle says though pardons were meant to have good intent, what we see is a patchwork of justice and injustice. She explains why your vote in November so greatly affects our system of justice.
</itunes:summary>
