I had a dream last night, I had gone to New Zealand for my first snow trip outside of Australia and was having the time of my life. When I woke up, I immediately went into snow trip research mode! Last year when the snow season ended here, I knew my next destination would be NZ because it’s so close (3hr flight from Sydney) and everyone raves about it. With airfares being the lowest they have ever been, it was a no brainer, I’m going to be boarding the great slopes of NZ. But where? From quick chats with friends and browsing over the internet it appeared that Queenstown or Wanaka was the way to go. But when I specifically Googled if one was better than the other for boarders, I soon got confused. In this blog post, I hope to lift the fog for the readers and those that have come to the same question that I have, “should I stay at Queenstown or Wanaka for snowboarding?” Below I’ve broken it down as simply as I can Queenstown Commercial but great night life Close to Coronet Peak (good for intermediate) and Remarkables (one of the best mountains when it has fresh snow) More skiiers Better for group of friends due to more activity More accommodation options Less reliable snow fall compared to Wanaka Free parking (get there early for best spots) Wanaka Less Commercial and therefore quieter Close to Cardrona (good for beginners/intermediate), Snow Park (great park terrain) and Treble Cone (good for advance riders) More snowboarders Better for families due to it being a quieter town Less accommodation options More reliable snow fall than Queenstown Free parking (get there early for best spots) Here is some info on each of the mountains around the area: Cardrona Ski Terrain: 853 acres Summit Elevation: 1860 m Vertical Rise: 600 m Longest Run: 3.6 km Half Pipes: 3 Lifts: 8 Terrain Park: 1000 m Beginner Runs 25% Intermediate Runs 55% Advanced Runs 20% Coronet Park Ski Terrain: 700 Acres Summit Elevation: 1650 m Longest Run: 2.4 km Terrain Park: Yes Pipes: 1 Lifts: 7 Beginner Runs 20% Intermediate Runs 45% Advanced Runs 35% Remarkables Ski Terrain: 550 Acres Summit Elevation: 1943 m Longest Run: 1.5 km Terrain Park: 3 Half Pipes: 1 Lifts: 7 Beginner Runs 30% Intermediate Runs 40% Advanced Runs 30% Treble Cone Ski Terrain: 1359 acres Summit Elevation: 2088m Vertical Rise: 700 m Lifts: 4 Beginner Runs 10% Intermediate Runs 45% Advanced Runs 45% No matter if you stay in Queenstown or Wanaka, you can ride all 4 mountains, each on their own day as it’s just an hour trip either way. If you have found this post useful, please “Like Us” on Facebook here (still in development). I’d appreciate it Plus, let us know down in the comments section where you ended up going to. Queenstown or Wanaka?
Have you seen or heard about Burton’s EST system but not sure what it’s all about? I’ve been there! Here’s some information on the new snowboarding technology and if it would suit your needs. About 2 years ago, Burton launched a brand new way to ride with the release of the Burton EST binding system. This new EST binding system completely changes the way bindings are mounted to the snowboards. These new bindings offer the limitless stance options. The major change to traditional binding is the use of SensoryBED. SensoryBED is becoming the replacement for the old baseplate that is generally found on traditional bindings. This new technology is a super cushioned and completely removable platform that will absorb impacts so the rider never feels it. Imagine that, instead of feeling every little vibration from the ground, with the use of the new Burton EST bindings, you won’t have to worry about that anymore. WIN! Instead of the traditional bindings with holes for stance setting, the new EST binding fits into a groove on the board. This frees the rider from having any angle limitations and is truly able to ride anyway they want. Another amazing thing about these new binding is when you want to change your stance, you can do so with ease. Instead of having to stop and dig out your tools, all you need to do is a simple pull of the cord. When you pull on the cord you can adjust your stance angles, width and setback all with ever having to get off the board. That is a genius concept right there, no more freezing hands as you try and get your perfect stance. These are great for new riders as well as experienced snowboarders. If you have never learned how to snowboard, using a Burton EST binding will make learning even easier. For some people it may take a while to find the right and comfortable stance. The traditional style bindings would mean constant stopping and adjusting of the angles and stances. This can be frustrating and cause some people to just give up. Burton EST has alleviated that problem with the introduction of these new bindings. These are also great for the experience rider who may just want to try a new stance. One simple tug on the cord and the choices are endless. In order to use the Burton EST bindings the board does need to be compatible with it. These bindings were designed to mount exclusively to the X8, Stria, Jeremey Jones and a few other board released in 2008. Due to the popularity and demand of these, Burton has released a compatible disk that will allow any rider to experience these new bindings. As long as they are using bindings made by Burton. Hope that has increased your understanding of the Burton’s EST system.
I’ve just purchased a brand new GIRO Sheer 2011 helmet (specifically for women) and to go along with it, Skullcandy audio drop kit. I bought them online because of the helmet isn’t available in Australia and the drop kit is overpriced here. Why would I buy a helmet? Most average snowboarders go without a helmet because if you just board for fun, it is unlikely you will do any serious harm to yourself. I had the same thoughts as I am still a beginner, but my most recent trip to the slopes saw me hit the back of my head on hard packed snow. And what can I say, it wasn’t fun! I didn’t feel “right” for much of the day but thankfully I didn’t need to go to the hospital or anything. From that experience I decided that I wanted to buy a helmet because I knew I want to go snowboarding in New Zealand, Japan and Canada, so I might as well make the investment now. And why the Skullcandy audio drop kit? Once I was good enough, I wanted to be able to listen to some tunes on the slopes as I love my music. It makes everything better than it is. And I wanted it to integrate seamlessly into my helmet and this was designed to do just that. But when researching, I discovered that the newer model helmets required the newer model drop kits or they would not be compatible. So make sure you do the same. Once both items are delivered, I’ll write up a review on them! Related Posts:Burton Lip-Stick 2011Queenstown or Wanaka for Snowboarding in New Zealand?Airhole Facemasks

This year for my second trip ever to the snow, I decided I wanted to go all out and get a snowboard, boots, bindings…everything! A lot of my friends thought I was crazy since I’ve only been to the snow once, but I knew that this was going to be a sport I would fall in love with. And when I fall, I fall hard! Because I wasn’t a very experienced snowboarder but I knew I wanted to get into the sport and travel the world snowboarding (for fun), I knew I had to get a board that would be usable for a beginner but would cater for intermediate to advance riders as well. After hours of research and talking to new friend Jeremy Sheridan from BoardWorld.com.au, I decided to get the Burton Lip-Stick 2011 (size 149, I’m 162cm tall). I took it riding for the first time on the 3rd September 2010 with a bunch of friends at Thredbo Village. What did I think of it? I don’t know all the technical jargon but I know how it felt under my feet. And it was AWESOME! Very responsive under the feet, carved a nice edge, and the graphics just looked HOT on the snow. One snowboard instructor said she loved my board. Me too! Even though I’m a complete noob, I felt in control with the board and it was really fun to ride. I would recommend it to anyone, it’s worth the extra cash! Here is how Burton describes the snowboard: Leave your mark from peak to park. Gabi Viteri gets high on the Lip-Stick™, and so can you. Our most sought after board now enhanced with the award-winning feel of Flying V™—get the snappy suspension of camber underfoot and the catch-free float of rocker at tip, tail, and center.
I’ve personally have never waxed a board and can’t because I don’t have a well ventilated area (apartment). But for those that want to maximise their board performance and try doing it themselves, here’s a unique way of doing it which I stumbled across (does not involve dripping wax). It is the common way Japanese snowboarders wax their boards, but foreign to everyone else. It is understood to be a “better” way of waxing your board because it wastes less wax and is safer for your board. Up to you guys to decide. Please comment and share your thoughts on this technique.
