Consider, for example, the age-old question: Does marijuana actually kill brain cells?

Short-term consumption is the opposite of harmful

“In the short term, consumption of cannabis can actually have clear medical benefits in terms of depression, anxiety, pain, PTSD and nausea associated with chemotherapy,” says Dr. Ajeet Sodhi, a neurologist based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. “New studies are showing that the CBD compounds also have neuroprotective effects, and have been shown to be beneficial for several neurologic disorders such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis,” Dr. Sodhi says.

While CBD is growing in popularity, it lacks sufficient long-term-use research, cautions Dr. Indra Cidambi, founder and medical director of the Center for Network Therapy (CNT), New Jersey’s first facility state-licensed to provide outpatient detox services for all substances of abuse.

“The medicinal properties of CBD appear promising, but they have not yet been proven,” Dr. Cidambi says. “There is no data that shows that CBD affects brain cells.”

Interestingly, cannabis in the elderly has been shown to improve cognitive health. Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany discovered that small, daily doses of THC can reverse an aging brain and restore memory. The study was with mice, but it’s a start.

Long-term THC could affect users brains, depending on age

With regard to THC, it’s the long-term effects on the brain that raises red flags for Dr. Sodhi. “[Long-term cannabis use is] suspected to cause memory problems, lack of motivation, tolerance, contribute to worsen paranoia, and certain psych disorders such as schizophrenia,” he says. At this point in time, though, he says there simply aren’t enough studies that offer a definitive answer on whether or not long-term cannabis use affects the brain, and how.

Getting high does not equal killing brain cells

While frequent, heavy cannabis use can cause a dependency or even addiction in some people, as well as the possible aforementioned symptoms, there is some good news. Using marijuana, no matter the frequency, cannot actually “kill” brain cells in adult users, says Dr. Sodhi.

“Getting high is not synonymous with killing brain cells. The high is an altered state produced by the THC, a mild hallucinogen,” he explains. “Neither THC or cannabis ‘kills’ brain cells in the traditional sense, so there’s really no need to quantify damage to the brain.”

The higher the dose—for example, the more smoke a person inhales and holds in the lungs, or how many THC-laced cookies he or she swallows—will create a more intense high for sure, but as Dr. Sodhi points out, this does not cause increased neurotoxicity in the brain; it just makes a person more high.

For young people, however, marijuana and brain health is a different story. The spongy organs inside of children and teens have yet to fully develop.

One study found that those who heavily consumed cannabis as teenagers—and continued to consume into adulthood—lost an average of eight IQ points between the ages of 13 and 38. “More disturbing is the finding that these lost mental abilities did not return fully in those who quit marijuana use, even as adults,” says Dr. Cidambi. “Those who started using marijuana as adults, however, did not show notable IQ declines,” she notes.

“As a result of persistent drug use, the brain’s natural release of dopamine is suppressed and drugs stimulate the release of dopamine. That is how the brain is altered,” Dr. Cidambi explains. “It takes years for the brain to resume normal functioning.

In the interim, the individual addicted to marijuana, or any other drug, is prone to relapse as he or she does not feel normal without stimulated dopamine release from the brain,” she adds.

Former Vice President Joe Biden said during Thursday’s Democratic debate that marijuana offenses should be treated as misdemeanors—a position that puts him sorely out of step with every other presidential primary opponent on the debate stage, all of whom are calling for outright cannabis legalization.

“Nobody who got in prison for marijuana, for example—immediately upon being released, they shouldn’t be in there.” he said. “That should be a misdemeanor.”

“They should be out and their record should be expunged. Every single right should be returned,” he said. “When you finish your term in prison, you should be able to not only vote but have access to Pell grants, have access to be able to get housing, have access to be able to move along the way.”

Biden previously called for cannabis decriminalization as part of his criminal justice plan, but his statement about making marijuana offenses misdemeanors could cause some confusion given that, in many but not all cases, misdemeanor offenses carry the possibility of jail time. He did say at one point that nobody should be incarcerated for a non-violent crime, however.

Biden also said that “nobody should be in jail for a drug problem” and that the country should invest more in “rehabilitation centers, not prisons.”

“We have to change the whole way we look at this,” he said.

NORML was quick to challenge Biden’s response, writing on Twitter that “you just said marijuana should be a misdemeanor. You couldn’t be more wrong.”

Biden has routinely faced criticism by his Democratic opponents over his role in advancing punitive drug laws, including the 1994 crime bill, during his time in the Senate. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who also weighed in on drug policy at the debate, said Biden’s criminal justice reform plan is inadequate and argued shortly after its release in July that the “proud architect of a failed system is not the right person to fix it.”

“Our criminal justice system is so savagely broken,” Booker said during Thursday’s debate. “There’s no difference in America between blacks, whites and Latinos for using drugs or dealing drugs—but if you’re African American, you’re almost four times more likely to be arrested and incarcerated, destroying your lives. So much of this comes down to privilege.”

Booker also said that he planned to grant mass clemency for thousands of incarcerated Americans, decrying “systemic racism that is eroding our nation” and noting that “we have more African Americans under criminal supervision today than all the slaves in 1850.”

“We need to reform this system and we must do it now,” he said. “Every day that we wait is too long.”

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg also briefly weighed in, noting the “overincarcaration of black Americans.”

The debate segment on criminal justice began with a question first directed at Sen. Kamala Harris of California, with the moderator noting her prior opposition to cannabis legalization and her record as a prosecutor overall.

“There have been many distortions of my record,” Harris said, adding that she was “born knowing about how the criminal justice system in America has worked and has been informed by racial bias.”

“I took on the position that allowed me, without asking permission, to create one of the first-in-the-nation initiatives that became a national model around people who are getting arrested for drugs and getting them jobs,” she said. She went on to say that she’d end mass incarceration and private prisons.

Harris faced a similar grilling from 2020 candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) during the last debate in August.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota weighed in to say that the country should go beyond legislation that passed to reform criminal sentencing and “move to the Second Step Act.” She didn’t mention whether marijuana reform would be a part of that step, however.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro didn’t address the issue on the stage but included marijuana legalization in a list of “bold ideas” in a tweet his campaign posted shortly after the start of the debate.

From second-guessing to understanding larger questions around the disease, many patients can experience anxiety and depression. According to Harvard Health, CBD is commonly used to address anxiety. In a 2015 study and analysis, researchers found that CBD oil offered promising treatment for individuals with various anxiety disorders.

Pain: Men and women experiencing cancer treatment often experience pain at injection sites as well as pain after surgery. In a piece for Doximity, Dr. Johnathan Kaplan shared that Marijuana and CBD offered a myriad of after-surgery benefits, including stopping eliminating opioid addiction, increasing appetite, and decreasing pain and side effects such as constipation.

As patients take more opioids for pain, the resulting constipation can cause more pain and the cycle begins anew. That is not an issue with marijuana.

Nausea: The American Cancer Society cites a study where individuals felt relief from symptoms of nausea and vomiting during treatment. In the study, individuals felt that smoking cannabis helped ease episodes of vomiting and nausea brought on by chemotherapy.

Insomnia: Often caused by anxiety or chronic pain that comes with a cancer diagnosis, insomnia can cause patients, a large CBD study from the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that of the 72 patients sampled, anxiety decreased in the first month of introducing CBD in a bedtime routine. Additionally, sleep scores also improved in the first 30 days in over 66.7% of patients.

Overall unease: From helping to balance stress and mood to reducing episodes of depression, Linda A. Parker found in writing her book, Cannabinoids and the Brain, found, “in a survey of nearly 4500 people revealed fewer depressive symptoms in cannabis users than in non-users.”

Even better? Research recently found that cannabinoids (CBs) offered relief for tumor-related symptoms in not just nausea, vomiting and pain for cancer patients, but in attacking the actual tumors. An April 2019 abstract in the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that CBs may slow tumor growth in breast cancer patients because they are active against estrogen-positive breast cancers, but non estrogen breast cancers as well, (as well as triple-negative breast cancer.) Often given to breast cancer patients in the advanced stages of the disease to slow growth, CBs may also offer relief in earlier stages of cancer as well.

For those experiencing a cancer diagnosis, it’s always best to discuss CBD or cannabis use with your doctor to ensure they have all the up-to-date information of your lifestyle and medicines- especially since CBD or cannabis can interact with medications you may be taking.

How Cannabis And CBD Can Help Eliminate The Stigma Around Mental Illness

With marijuana use and mental health both wildly stigmatized, perhaps there are solutions in place that are as simple as having a conversation.

Millions of Americans are coping with mental health issues. Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, those who suffer in silence with mental illness issues often remain silent due to the stigmatization that shrouds depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders.

Two perspectives on cannabis and mental health

Olivia Alexander, the founder of Kush Queens, an online retailer in CBD and Cannabis products, shared recently that she questioned growing a business and leading a team while addressing using cannabis for her mental health. “It’s a hard thing to admit that some days you can’t cope with daily life without cannabis,” Olivia explains online. CBD and cannabis helped ease the symptoms of Olivia’s bipolar disorder and Olivia found that she was more successful using cannabis than without.

But, there’s another side to the story. Dr. Elinore F. McCance-Katz believes that substances like marijuana can carry mental health risks. Speaking in 2018, she shared, “As a clinical psychiatrist specializing in addiction, as someone committed to treating people with substance use disorders, as a concerned American—I cannot stress enough how understated the risks and consequences tied to marijuana consumption are in our nation’s dialogue.” Dr. McCane-Katz listed risks such as a decrease in IQ and a “predisposition to mental illness” as risks that society needs to address.

Interestingly, a study in 2016 demonstrates no loss of IQ in British teens who consumed marijuana.

“Marijuana users lost about four IQ points over the course of the study. But their abstinent twin siblings showed a similar pattern of decline, suggesting that the loss of mental sharpness was due to something other than pot…” (The American Association for the Advancement of Science)

Mental Health: The figures involved

The National Alliance on Mental Illness, (NAMI,) shared powerful statistics around mental health that may offer more insight:

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experiences mental illness in a given year.
Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year.
6.9% of adults in the U.S.—16 million—had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.
Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year. Among adults with a serious mental illness, 62.9% received mental health services in the past year.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and the 2nd leading cause of death for people aged 10–34.

Steps to a solution

It may currently be a stretch to stay that cannabis can eliminate the stigma of mental illness, but it certainly has the power to empower and start conversations that can lead to healing. Ljubica Kostovic from TRNTO believes that perception is already changing in CBD and cannabis, with individuals more willing to use for pain, anxiety, and PTSD. He shared, “Cannabis has been used for medical purposes for thousands of years and has been used to treat mental health conditions for over a century — its full legalization on a federal level presents a unique opportunity for us to explore.”

With marijuana use and mental health both wildly stigmatized, perhaps there are solutions in place that are as simple as a conversation. Twisp House of Cannabis in Washington recently hired a 74-year-old woman named Sonja, as they noticed many of their older patrons wanted to speak to someone who was currently or had been in their place. Undergoing certification, Sonja is hoping to eliminate the stigma of cannabis by sharing her story and the benefits of marijuana with adults who may not have asked before, a tactic often used in the mental health community that allows for greater inclusion and trust.

Stories are an incredible balm, aren’t they? When individuals feel safe in sharing, it allows others to do the same.

A mum who lost her son to a rare kidney cancer on the day he married his childhood sweetheart has released a collection of heartfelt letters she penned in the months after his death in a poignant new book.

Letters To Matthew: Life After Loss was launched this month on what would have marked Matthew Bates' 30th birthday.

The talented young journalist, who had recently graduated from Brighton University, was diagnosed with Type 2 Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma in 2014 - an extremely rare and aggressive tumour that affects only five per cent of kidney cancer sufferers.

But it was more than two years before the severity of the condition became known.

Mum Louise, 60, from Warwickshire, said: 'I noticed when he came home from university he used to drink gallons of squash.

'I thought this isn't right and he should go and see the doctor, but he didn't really have any other symptoms and, what with one thing and another, it was a couple of years before he actually went.

'He started going to see his local GP about three years later complaining about fatigue, weight loss, back pain and night sweats and even blood in his urine.

'They only tested him for diabetes and they put it down to a kidney infection and gave him antibiotics.

'We have since found out that blood in the urine can be a symptom of kidney cancer.'

In the end Matthew went back to the doctors as he was losing weight and had a persistent cough.

They ran some blood tests which flagged up something was more seriously wrong. Matthew was immediately admitted to hospital where a scan showed a large mass on his kidney.

'We were in complete shock,' Louise recalled. 'The bottom of our world just fell out.

'But then a survival mechanism kicks in. It still feels unbelievable today that this happened to our family.

'When he was told, the consultant came in and held his hand. I knew this was going to be bad news.

'But we were given hope. We were told that he could survive with one kidney and an operation to remove it could be the cure.

'When the consultant left the room Matthew was shaking. You could feel the shock through him. For half an hour we just held each other and we both cried.'

Matt underwent surgery to remove his kidney and there was good news for the family when a scan a few weeks later revealed no evidence that the cancer had spread.

'Once his kidney was removed and he was on his new healthy eating plan, you could see him slowly getting stronger and stronger,' Louise said.

'Then the scan came out clear and we thought, "That's it. It's over!"'

But a further scan told a different story and, as the family tried to come to terms with the latest blow to their hopes, Matthew was accepted on a new trial immunotherapy drug at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, Europe's largest cancer centre.

Unfortunately, his body did not respond to the treatment. In a second trial, he was put on another targeted drug therapy, Nivolumab.

Louise said: 'He responded to that and his soft tissue tumours were shrinking rapidly and some of them had even disappeared. But at that point we didn't know he also had a tumour on his spine.'

Desperate to help her son, Louise, who runs a complementary therapy business, managed to source illegal cannabis oil, which, she learned, had showed positive effects for other cancer sufferers.

'I had read an article about a 14-year-old boy who had cancer,' she explained.

'He was in a hospice with days to live and his mum started giving him cannabis oil and he started getting better.

Matt underwent surgery to remove his kidney and there was good news for the family when a scan a few weeks later revealed no evidence that the cancer had spread - but their joy didn't last long. 'He got so well he had to leave the hospice and then over time his cancer was cured. She is quite a high profile person now in trying to legalise cannabis.

'Matthew took it for three weeks and it helped him sleep and boosted his appetite, but he didn't like how it made him feel. He was worried that if the hospital picked up drugs in his blood they would refuse him treatment so he wanted to come off it. I was always guided by him.'

Louise told how they thought Matthew was doing really well and starting to feel better in himself - until he woke up on Bank Holiday Monday in August 2016.

'He woke up and said, "Mum, my legs feel really wobbly and I can't pee",' Louise recalled.

'So he phoned up the Christie's 24-hour hotline and five minutes later he had an ambulance outside the door.

'They recognised the symptoms of spinal compression from what he'd told them and he was whisked into Warwick Hospital. A scan showed the spinal tumour was getting bigger. We were just devastated.'

It was at this stage the disease really started to take hold and a subsequent operation on Matt's spine led to a series of complications which left him paralysed and suffering from a severe infection.

Louise said: 'I remember driving home from the hospital after the surgery a few weeks before he died and I am screaming at the top of my voice and banging the steering wheel.

'I think that was the moment when I finally realised I couldn't control this. I couldn't stop it.'

A makeshift hospital ward was set up at home, but it was to be only two weeks before he returned to hospital after water developed in his lungs.

Louise said: 'They took him in and he never came home again.

'But Matthew was so accepting of it all. He was in such a good place. When the doctors said to him 10 days before he died, "You're not responding to the antibiotics and the cancer's getting worse. There's nothing else we can do for you now, we're just looking at end of life care," he was just thanking them for everything they'd done.

'I thought, how can you be so calm? He was incredible. I don't know how he did it.'

On Matthew's last night in Myton Hospice, Louise and his family witnessed Matthew marry his girlfriend of nine years from his bedside.

'The hospice team were amazing,' she said. 'They made a sanctuary and put flowers everywhere. It looked beautiful. It was wonderful to see Matthew's face. I'm so happy he got his last wish.

'I stayed with him that night. I stayed awake and I held him all night. It turned out to be his last night.'

But when he became too ill to play it was his passion for music that had given him a new focus. He would spend hours in his dad Bill's recording studio – a converted shed – in the back garden – learning to write and record his own songs.

This resulted in two CDs, the second of which was released just a few days before he died, in October 2016.

It was very soon after Matt's death that Louise sought solace penning letters to her son.

'Afterwards I didn't know what to do with myself and I started journaling as a form of therapy and getting my emotions out of my head,' she explained.

'One day I was peeling the vegetables and all of a sudden I was surrounded by this energy of Matthew and it was like he was there with me.

'It was the weirdest feeling, like he was giving me a virtual hug and saying he liked my letters. And I got a picture of a book in my head. It's as if Matthew was saying, "This needs to be a book, Mum".'

Louise said: 'My wish is that my book helps people talk about grief in a much more comfortable way without all the awkwardness that comes with it.

'I want people to be okay about grief. I want to help other people understand what grief is. There are also tips in the book about what to say and how to be.

'Hopefully, by reading the letters and sharing my experience of what it was like for me, it might help them in the future.

'This book is not about fixing people or forcing the healing process because, as the book explains, there is no cure for grief. Grief can only be absorbed, carried, experienced and cared for.

'You never get over loss, you just learn to grow around it and move on in a positive way. I'm still just taking it a day at a time.'

Cannabis as life saving drug:A real story told by a mother

A 10-year-old boy had just three days to live after battling a rare cancer which affects one in seven billion people and was planning his own funeral before cannabis saved his life.

Callie Blackwell, now a cannabis campaigner, told Deryn Blackwell had ‘tried every painkiller, antibiotic, anti-sickness and steroid drug’ when she decided to make her own illegal cannabis-based medicine. Blackwell told Metro.co.uk, ‘I couldn’t bear watching Deryn in so much pain from the necrosis in his infected three finger.

‘He was on Fentanyl by this time and even that wasn’t working. That’s when I decided to make a cannabis based medicine myself.’ Deryn had previously battled leukaemia and in 2012 was suffering from Langerhans cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer which affects one in seven billion people.

Deryn had had four bone marrow transplants which all failed in the space of ten months, leaving him with ‘no immune system’, his mother said – and a finger injury led doctors to give him three days to live.

Blackwell said, ‘It was bleak. He was given three days to live, had planned his own funeral, including music and the transport for his coffin

With no other choices available, and cannabis medication not licensed, Blackwell decided to use cannabis illegally – and the effects were breathtaking. She said, ‘I’d seen countless articles on people treating their cancers with Cannabis and had done a lot of research but initially, I dismissed it. I had no idea what it could do.’

Blackwell said that the effects were immediate – and within days, Deryn began to recover. She said, ‘The immediate effects were that of calm. Deryn had been experiencing terrible night terrors, he was ready to die but it was taking too long for him so he was getting severely anxious. Deryn didn’t want to die on morphine.

‘The first thing that was remarkable was his refusal of Cyclizine, an anti-sickness drug he had become addicted to. He never took that or morphine again! ‘Five days later, his immune system started to produce blood cells – this was a week after doctors told us that there was absolutely no chance of him recovering.’ The Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced this month that the NHS will offer prescriptions for CBD oil from November 1

Cannabidiol’ (CBD), is a chemical from cannabis which campaigners claim helps with diseases including cancer and Crohn’s disease. Crucially, CBD products don’t contain any THC, the chemical in cannabis which causes the high – so it’s legal to use in the UK. But Blackwell says that the new law doesn’t go far enough – and says that the NHS will only offer alcohol solutions containing CBD rather than ‘whole plant’ remedies (which remain illegal).

She says that five years after his recovery, Deryn continues to take cannabis-based medicine – and his recovery has amazed doctors. Blackwell said, ‘It’s been five years since his treatment and instead of finding damage, they are discovering that he is repairing and advancing in ways they find very unusual.’ She says, ‘This [new law] is a step back for the vast majority of cannabis consumers who have been successfully treating themselves to no ill effect and certainly a step back for my son and people like myself who help others

‘Not only will we and thousands of others be breaking the Misuse of Drugs act, we will also be breaking prescription laws which carry a higher penalty. ‘In order to get the chance to be prescribed a cannabis based product, you have to suffer from an illness on the very small list of recognised ailments. Then you have to exhaust EVERY other licensed medicine first and then maybe you can have a prescription for a drug that causes horrendous side effects.

‘Many come off the other licensed medicines because of cannabis. ‘It won’t be recognised for cancer and certainly not as a preventative which is why Deryn still consumes a daily dose.’

Blackwell says that she is still contacted by hundreds of people wanting access to cannabis oil – and would recommend it to others battling serious illnesses. She says, ‘I waited right until the very end to try it and we were lucky. It’s one of the reasons I wrote a book about Deryn’s recovery. My advice would be to do it an awful lot sooner than I did.”

Cannabis Gum For Fibromyalgia Pain Relief Useful?

29 States (and DC) have legalized marijuana for medicinal use, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). That means millions of people suffering from chronic pain have access to a new way to relieve their suffering.

Some studies have already shown that inhaling marijuana can relieve chronic nerve pain. One study revealed that the pain symptoms dropped slightly when participants inhaled a marijuana vapor three times per day, according to WebMD.

The Study

This study showed that the actual pain relief was only marginally better than those who took a placebo, and some participants experienced a headache, dry eyes, numbness and a cough.

Medical marijuana is available in several forms including capsules and oils. Doctors prescribe the medication for cancer patients (to ease nausea), anxiety, insomnia, arthritis, migraines, inflammation, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy, among others.

According to How Stuff Works, cannabis is useful because cannabinoids in the marijuana bind to endocannabinoids the body naturally produces. This creates reactions in the body that help block pain receptors (and creates a high feeling).

One problem doctors are running into is that when patients take Cannabis in capsule form, the body metabolizes 90% of the medication in the liver before it can reach other areas of the body. Gum could make it easier to distribute the pain-relieving properties without mind-altering side effects, according to Herb.

Cannabis gum could deliver lower doses of the cannabis to patients. This would allow patients to get the pain relief with fewer side effects, according to Herb.

This form of dispersing the medication is still new, but there are already some possible drawbacks.

A study published in a 2008 edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association, showed a link between people who smoked marijuana and patients with gum disease. The study showed that individuals who regularly smoked marijuana were 60% more likely to have gum disease, according to WebMD. It’s unclear what effect chewing it would have on gums and teeth.

Cannabis gum is already for sale in some markets, but it’s unclear how effective the treatment is yet.

Cannabis Could Be Reversing Damage to Arthritic Joints

Patients report that cannabis puts arthritis into remission, so the Arthritis Society funds the research to find out if it’s true.

There’s good news for the 54 million people who suffer from arthritis: A study commissioned by The Arthritis Society is investigating avenues toward developing breakthrough therapies using medical cannabis.

Canadian researcher, Dr. Jason McDougall, received a Strategic Operating Grant from the organization to complete a three-year study on the ability of cannabis to effectively repair arthritic joints. McDougall is a professor of pharmacology and anesthesia at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and one of the world’s foremost pain researchers.

The study aims to discover if cannabis-based medicine does more than simply dulls pain for arthritis suffers—what if it can actually reverse the damage? It’s the first research funded by the organization to look directly into therapies derived from medical cannabis.

“People living with arthritis pain are looking for alternatives to improve their quality of life,” said Janet Yale, president and CEO of The Arthritis Society. “We need research to help answer the many important questions around medical cannabis and its use. Our goal is to give Canadians the ability to make informed choices about their treatment options and to give physicians evidence-based guidelines to make treatment recommendations for their patients. This project is an important step to achieving these goals.”

The research builds on previous work from Chinese scientists who found that not only do arthritic joints contain extremely high concentrations of CB2 receptors, but that those sites also suggest a pathway for treatment.

What is a CB2 receptor? In layman’s terms, CB2 is a molecule in the cell wall that acts as a doorway for cannabinoids to enter the cell. It’s the cell’s way of flagging down helpful particles that circulate past it during the day-to-day functioning of the body.

While the body produces its own endocannabinoids that can attach and work on a cell through CB2 receptors, cannabis-based medicine also has the ability to walk through the same door. Researchers believe this may be the reason why cannabis is effective in treating disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.

The thinking goes like this: If cannabis-based medicine can use CB2 receptors to move inside of cells and directly affect the firing of pain signals in the joints, can the medicine also repair joint damage while it’s there?

There are plenty of reasons to think so.

A study in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B found that the body’s endocannabinoid system releases antioxidants that help repair damaged cells when it becomes triggered by outside cannabinoids.

And anecdotal evidence, such as the story of a Maine woman whose use of cannabis smoothies led to so much relief that her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms went into remission, provide further thought-provoking justifications to delve deeper into the treatment possibilities of cannabis.

What’s more: businesses are jumping on the bandwagon. Canadian medical cannabis companies Aphria, Inc. and the Peace Naturals Project have each pledged $100,000 to the Arthritis Society in order to help foot the bill for Dr. McDougall’s research. When the market is bullish on new research, it’s a good sign for sufferers.

The reality is that cannabinoid receptors play a crucial role in the regulating the body’s immune system. What’s not clear is exactly how they operate. From a strictly biological perspective, auto-immune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic disorders like osteoarthritis don’t make much sense. Why would the body attack itself or be unable repair such crucial functions, like joint dexterity? The discovery of cannabinoid receptors at inflammatory sites may provide an answer.

Thanks to a litany of previous works in this arena, McDougall’s team already knows that cannabis-based medicines act directly on CB2 sites and suppress inflammation and pain by mediating immune responses at the sites of inflammation. This suggests that the body’s reaching out for molecules to help it reconstruct its vital elements.

The next step will be to see if changes to the medicine create different responses in the body. If researchers can discovery new ways in which cannabinoid receptors take up or use medicines, it could open a window of treatment possibilities. So much of our current knowledge is in the theoretical sphere, with most doctors and patients simply thankful for effective pain treatment—whether it’s understood or not is a secondary concern.

However, as our knowledge of the body’s endocannabinoid system grows, and we look further into the means by which cannabis-based medicines reduce inflammation and affect nerves, we’re likely to discover novel ways of treatment—and possible ways to reverse the long-lasting joint damage of arthritis.While McDougall’s research has yet to be completed, the results are expected soon.

Woman who took cannabis oil to battle terminal cancer is given all-clear

A 52-year-old mother who took cannabis oil to battle her terminal cancer has been given the all-clear by doctors.

Joy Smith was told she would only have six weeks to live when she was diagnosed with incurable stomach and bowel cancer in August 2016.

In a desperate attempt to defy expectations, she began taking a cannabis oil that contained THC, which is illegal in the UK. She is believed to have bought it online, the MailOnline reported,

And after a rollercoaster two years, she found out on Monday morning that she was cancer-free and would no longer have to have chemotherapy.

Ms Smith, from Coventry, said: “I am going to party for the rest of my life. I have got to be the only person in the world who has survived this.

“I keep pinching myself to see if this is real. I am being monitored every three months, but other than that I have no more treatment planned.”

Ms Smith was told that she would have little longer than a month left to live unless she started chemotherapy to buy her more time.

She started having treatment every two weeks for three days, but had to have the line that delivered her chemotherapy taken out after she developed sepsis.

Ms Smith was unaware her friends had been researching an alternative cancer cure online until she was handed a cannabis-based tablet out of the blue.

She admitted that she didn’t want to take it at first because she ‘didn’t know what it was’ – but did so anyway in the hope of a cure.

The effects of THC – the compound that causes the ‘high’ – left her feeling ‘drunk’, Ms Smith claimed as she struggled to speak and ‘words just slurred out’.

Ms Smith then started researching cannabis oil online and discovered it had worked for other sufferers – even though scientists are dubious.

After taking regular doses of cannabis oil containing THC, which is currently illegal in the UK, her inoperable tumours almost completely disappeared.

Ms Smith spoke about her battle against the cancer with the oil in March, when scans showed just a small amount of the disease left in her stomach.

She was hopeful then that the cancer would completely disappear with continued cannabis oil use.

And Ms Smith said she hadn’t stopped smiling since her appointment with her consultant on Monday, and said the news has yet to sink in.

Ms Smith has received thousands of messages from fellow sufferers desperate to know more about her miracle cure, which has left doctors stunned.

She said: “I am just so happy. This is all down to the cannabis oil. I shouldn’t be here, but I am.

“My daughter is in Australia at the minute and when I told her she thought I was lying.

“Everyone around me has been amazing, I have an army behind me and they’re all so happy.”

The legal status of cannabis oil in the UK has confused thousands after a landmark ruling that CBD, a compound in the drug, can be sold as a medicine with the correct licence. It is sold over-the-counter in Holland & Barrett. However, cannabis oil, which contains THC, is strictly illegal.

Cannabis oil and CBD oil is usually bottled with a dropper – but can also come in the form of chewing gum, soap or as a vape oil for e-cigarettes.

Both have been reported to help people with epilepsy, rheumatism, migraines, psoriasis, acne, multiple sclerosis and depression.

Cannabis oil is not available legally in the UK but can be sourced online. Ms Smith said the people contacting her are desperate to know how to get hold of it themselves.

Although she can’t supply the oil herself, she tries to help in other ways. Ms Smith is writing a book about her journey so far and is determined to get it legalised.

She said: “I have got to get it legalised. I am so happy, happier than I have ever been. I just keep sharing the petition and hope it will make a difference.

“I believe my reason for being here is to help everyone else. Unless you have been faced with death you don’t know.”

Ms Smith is now looking forward to her life going back to normal. She said she will have her hair grow back after the long period of treatment.

She said: “I haven’t had chemo for eight weeks, and four weeks ago was my last cancer treatment.

“I will have hair growing back, my nails will be strong. It just hasn’t sunk in yet.

“I have to thank all the nurses and the doctors at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, they’ve been amazing and especially, Dr Sohgi.

“They have been the best for me, even though I have defied all their science.”

A few days after learning she had nearly beaten the disease in March, Ms Smith discovered she won a competition she entered while ‘high’.

After ticking everything off her bucket list after she received the terminal diagnosis, she was unsure how to spend her £84,000 prize money.

Ms Smith has started a petition to make cannabis oil legal in the UK for medical use, which has attracted more than 17,000 signatures.

CAN CANNABIS OIL CURE CANCER?

A mother-of-two claimed in February that she has cured her aggressive breast cancer by taking one drop of cannabis oil containing THC every day.

Dee Mani, 44, refused chemotherapy when she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer – deemed the deadliest form – and instead opted to try the oil, which is illegal in the UK.

Doctors gave her the all-clear just five months after she opted for the oil.

Despite her claims that it has cured her of cancer, there is no proof cannabis, or any of its compounds, can treat cancer in humans as research showing the drug’s anti-tumour effects have been in petri dishes and on mice.

Dr Kat Arney, from Cancer Research UK, said that while study findings have been promising, cancer patients should not get their hopes up.

She previously said: “We know that cannabinoids can have a range of different effects on cancer cells grown in the lab and animal tumours.

“But at the moment there isn’t good evidence from clinical trials to prove that they can safely and effectively treat cancer in patients.”

Cannabis is labeled by the US Government as a Schedule One Narcotic, meaning little to no known medical value. (Even though the US Govt holds patents that state otherwise) Marinol, which is APPROVED BY THE FDA, is synthesized THC. Millions of people are sitting in jail for using Cannabis raw, but it’s ‘perfectly fine’ to use the plant if the Government and their corporate owners take most of the medicine out of it, then get to charge you an arm and a leg for it. Why is that? I shall explain.

The US Government has even more reason to keep it illegal today. If Cannabis were to become legalized, it would eat away at TRILLIONS of pharmaceutical profits over the years. (Not including other profits like the billions they get for keeping our privately owned prisons full) What most people don’t realize is, the Government(s) have been helping the major pharmaceutical companies stonewall natural cures for decades. (Cannabis is merely one of many they have tried to bury and discredit) In fact, the US Government has known since 1974 that Cannabis cures Cancer. In ’72 Richard Nixon wanted a larger budget for his war on drugs. He thought that if he proved Cannabis caused lung cancer like cigarettes do, he would get the support he needed. He gave the Medical College of Virginia 2 years to do a study on the effects of THC on the body. In ’74 the study was completed. It turns out, THC when ingested in highly concentrated forms (such as eating Cannabis oil) will attack any mutated cells in your body while strengthening and rejuvenating the healthy cells. They found the PERFECT cure for Cancer. It worked fast, it worked well, it worked on many different forms of Cancer in ALL stages and it had ZERO harmful side effects. (Unlike Chemo which deteriorates your entire body and kills 1 in 5 patients. Not only that, but other research shows it dissolves ALL forms of tumors and can even combat super-bugs like MRSA.) When Richard Nixon saw the results of the study he was FURIOUS. He threw the entire report in the trash and deemed the study classified. In 1976 President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies, who set out — unsuccessfully — to develop synthetic forms of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without the “high.”

We only found out about the study a few years ago thanks to dedicated medical and law professionals who filed Freedom of Information Requests. The Government lied for many reasons.. One of the main reasons is Pharmaceutical Companies. They spend billions every year lobbying to keep Cannabis illegal because they make TRILLIONS off Cancer drugs and research. They are already well aware that Cannabis cures Cancer. They have a well thought out con going at the moment. Cancer patients and their loved ones will spend their entire life savings or even sell their houses and businesses in order to pay for Chemotherapy and other Cancer treatment drugs. A lot of the time they spend all that money and their loved one dies anyway. If the public found out that the Government has been lying for over 40 years, that MILLIONS of lives could have been saved and that the dying could grow the cure they so desperately need in their own backyard… The American public would be going nuts over it. This is why we need your help telling people!

Keep in mind.. The US Government also holds a Patent on Cannabis and it’s medicinal properties. US Patent 6630507 states unequivocally that cannabinoids are useful in the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of diseases including auto-immune disorders, stroke, trauma, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and HIV dementia. The patent, awarded in 2003, is based on research done by the National Institute of Health, and is assigned to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. In the age of information, they can no longer keep their lies about Cannabis afloat.

In case you are wondering the difference between a few things like Hemp oil and Cannabis oil, I figured I’d explain that too. THC is soluble in alcohol and fats only. This is why people saute it in butter and use it in things like cakes and cookies. You can make Cannabis Ghee (which is essentially Canna-butter) and use it how you would normally use butter in a recipe.

Cannabis oil is made by crushing raw Cannabis in grain alcohol (as close to 100% as possible), straining it and cooking off the alcohol VERY carefully. All you will be left with is essentially ‘pure medicine’ in highly concentrated form.

Hemp oil is made by cold-pressing the seeds of the Hemp plant and extracting the healthy oil within. It is used for things like food and fuel, but it will not cure cancer because it lacks THC. (Hence the reason it’s legal to buy at places like Trader Joe’s)

Now, I realize how badly some people are going to want to get their hands on Cannabis oil for their suffering loved ones. I’m sorry to say, the only place you can get the oil is from Cannabis dispensaries in areas where it is sold legally. Otherwise you have to make it yourself which can be highly complicated and even dangerous since you have to worry about alcohol fumes and legal repercussions if you get caught.

Still, in my opinion it is well worth the risks since it has already saved THOUSANDS of people (and pets) from horrible deaths due to diseases like Cancer. Cannabis Kicks Lyme Disease to the Curb

Lyme disease has been controversial for some years. Many medical practitioners misdiagnose it, while several think that it’s mental. With Lyme disease, there are so many symptoms, so many debilitating, agonizing manifestations, that it’s often misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, lupus or a mental issue.

Lyme disease is caused by a spirochetal bacteria of the Borrelia genus. Spirochetes are composed of about 40% DNA and have double-membrane envelopes that make them difficult to trace and kill. They’re apparently able to hide in deep tissue and change shapes to disguise their identities.

They’re somewhat similar to the bacteria behind syphilis, as Lyme disease affects the nervous system and brain also.

Going through the medical system with Lyme disease is like being a ball in an old fashioned pinball game machine. Being on antibiotics forever is risking serious adverse events or at least reducing one’s immunity to invite all sorts of other complications.

All this without a complete cure. But now there is considerable hope with cannabis.

Cannabis Lyme successes

There are two levels of handling Lyme with cannabis: managing symptoms well by smoking marijuana, or completely reversing the disease with cannabis oil. Not many are aware of cannabis oil pioneered by Rick Simpson a few years ago. Rick has said that most of the healing qualities of cannabis are lost in the smoke.

Alexis, diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease, is an example of someone handling symptoms without pharmaceuticals by smoking marijuana. She was on antibiotics long enough for her gastrointestinal tract to be damaged and to be hospitalized with hemorrhagic colitis.

She was taken off antibiotics and put on several strong pain prescriptions that were barely effective while putting her into lower emotional states. Then she tried smoking marijuana.

That routine handled most of her nausea, enabled her to eat well enough to avoid wasting away, helped her sleep better and eased her pain while elevating her mood. She maintains that marijuana has been the best thing for her Lyme disease.

Alexis wrote, “In the hospital, I have needed to have morphine or lorazepam through an IV to accomplish what smoking two grams of cannabis does on the comfort of my couch, in a fraction of the time.” [1] But Alexis is looking for a long-term solution.

Some have discovered that solution using cannabis oil for Lyme disease. Cannabis oil is a highly concentrated substance that’s extracted and reduced from large amounts of cannabis with a good balance of THC and other cannabinoids.

It has become increasingly available in states that allow medical marijuana. But it’s also available “underground” if you search on the internet. This is the stuff that has been curing cancer lately.

Shelly White’s Lyme disease was so debilitating that she had endured at least 10 seizures daily for a year and a half. She began smoking marijuana from a pipe and then switched to inhaling it through a vaporizer. Just from that, her seizures had stopped. Then she decided to go to the next level of using cannabis oil.

After a month of the oil, she was able to return to work and school. At the time of writing her story, she was happy to announce that she could now move out and live on her own and enjoy a normal social life. [2]

Research Says Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) May Be Helped With Cannabis

The cognitive changes in the brains of people with Down syndrome may be helped by cannabinoid therapy that corrects memory deficits.

Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is one of the main genetic causes of intellectual disability. It has a frequency of 1 in 700 to 1000 live births. Intellectual disability is displayed by learning and memory deficits that can be pinpointed to occur in specific areas of the brain, called the ‘hippocampus cognitive domains’.

The mouse is the model for the study of trisomy conditions. Trisomy 21 is analogous to Trisomy 16 in mice as the gene loci are very similar. And this is how researchers came to understand how the endocannabinoid system is involved in the regulation of neurological processes that underlie cognitive deficits in Trisomy 21.

Cognitive Problems Caused By Changes in Neurons

Researchers have found several reasons for the intellectual disability that can accompany Down Syndrome. There are changes in the communication between neurons in the hippocampus as well as an imbalance between neurons that excite and those that inhibit. The endocannabinoid system has emerged as one of the main regulators of all these processes, prompting one group of researchers to investigate its involvement in Down syndrome.

Too Many CB1 Receptors Leads to Cognitive Problems

Researchers identified that CB1 receptors play a role in characteristic cognitive patterns seen in two different mouse models for Down syndrome. The first observation they made is that there seems to be an overabundance of CB1 in neurons of the hippocampus, and these are overly activated. The result is this serious dampening of connecting neurons that convey cognitive abilities.

When they tested this theory by using knockdown trisomy mice that were bred to have decreased CB1 receptors, the memory deficits were gone. The assessment of this change was looked at over two tests: novel object recognition test and novel place recognition test. During the tests, mice that had memory deficits performed poorly, and couldn’t recognize the objects or places that they were previously introduced to. On the contrary, when CB1 receptor activity was decreased, the memory was rescued. The same results were obtained when CB1 was activated using a pharmaceutical called Rimonabant.

These results suggest that increased number CB1 receptors and their hyperexcited state in the hippocampus creates imbalance in neurotransmission. And that this is responsible for lowered cognitive abilities.

What Can Cannabis Do About It?

Given that CB2 activation is associated with anti-inflammatory effects, CB2 agonists may have a neuroprotective effect. Likewise, since FAAH levels are high, endocannabinoid levels are likely chronically reduced and supplementation with exogenous cannabinoids may have therapeutic benefits.

Additionally, by the age of 30 to 40, people with Down Syndrome have a significant build up of these sticky amyloid plaques that are also found in Alzehimer’s. In fact, a study at the University of South Florida declared these two disorders to be variations of the same disease. Cannabinoid therapy has been found to be enormously helpful in preventing and breaking down these plaque in vivo and in vitro.

Pre-clinical studies have shown that administration of THC at 3mg/kg per day for 4 weeks lead to a reduction in Aß plaques and preservation of neurons.

One research group has recently shown that THC has anti- Aß properties in vitro . Namely, they found that incubation of cells that produce Aß with THC resulted in a time- and dose-dependent arrest of Aß production. The authors also underlined that the amount of THC used to treat the cells corresponds to very low doses of THC, and in fact were a thousand times lower compared to the doses of THC that have been shown to cause cognitive impairments in rat studies. Moreover, they found no cytotoxic side effects of this dose of THC in cells, suggesting that likely this treatment would be safe and effective in the pre-clinical studies that would transpire from this data.

Further studies are needed to find out if changing CB1 activity can have the same benefit for humans with Trisomy 21. If if does, then cannabis will be an excellent therapy to help manage cognitive impairment.

Alcohol Shrinks Your Brain But Cannabis Grows New Brain Cells

Alcohol and brain health do not go hand-in-hand. Luckily, cannabis can help repair some of that.

It’s easy to see the signals of alcohol damage to our brains, and they start the moment we begin to feel tipsy. The immediate effects of a few drinks start with slurred speech, uncoordinated movements, progressively worse decision making, and memory impairment. Drinking day in and day out compounds these effects, making alcohol one of the most dangerous substances there is. In a side by side comparison using 16 different criteria, alcohol tops them all. It is the most dangerous drug, no matter how you calculate it.

A new study from a team at the University of Colorado Boulder and the CU Change Lab is supplying even more evidence about alcohol and brain health. Their research reveals cannabinoids are far better for long term brain health than alcohol. Their data on cannabinoids is a surprising turn of events, considering we all grew up on anti-drug propaganda like the “This is Your Brain on Drugs” commercials from the 1990s.

What happens to your brain when you consume alcohol? What about cannabinoids? More importantly, what are each substance’s long term effects? We have more unbiased research into these areas than ever before and it’s worth re-examining our assumptions about cannabis on brain health, especially compared to the effects of alcohol.

This is Your Brain on Alcohol

Alcohol has an impact on three different regions of the brain, including the frontal lobes, amygdala, and hippocampus. Each drink increasingly suppresses the activity of the frontal lobes, which leads to poor decision making and situational awareness. Alcohol also suppresses the amygdala, which is essential to regulating our flight or fight response. When this mechanism is not in top performing shape, it may lead to more drinks and worse decisions.

Finally, the hippocampus is responsible for memory retention and formation. Alcohol use impairs the hippocampus. If you wake up the next morning wondering, “What happened last night?”, it’s because alcohol affected your memory formation.

A recent study published by the team at the University of Colorado Boulder, in the peer-reviewed journal Addiction, explored substance use on grey and white brain matter. Grey matter is the substance in the brain that includes the cells, dendrites (‘feelers’ at the ends of cells), and the axon terminals (the end that inserts into receptors). White matter provides the communications between the clusters of grey matter.

What the team uncovered about alcohol use was not revolutionary. Yet it did demonstrate how alcohol and brain health do not mix. Alcohol use shrinks the brain. This means less grey matter and lower white matter integrity. However, the study’s primary focus explored the brain health after alcohol consumption compared to cannabis.

This is Your Brain on Cannabis

If the 90s anti-cannabis propaganda is anything to go by, we can all assume our brains look like fried eggs. Past cannabis research primarily focused on its “damaging” effects on brains, bodies, and society generally. The Colorado team may not have all the answers, but they have proven that cannabis is much less damaging than previously believed.

In the comparison of grey and white matter, cannabis performed much better than alcohol. The team discovered “Marijuana and associated cannabinoid products, […] were not shown to have any long-term impact on the amount of gray matter in the brain or on the integrity of the white matter.”

Another investigation of the long-term effects of cannabis on brain health came to similar conclusions. Staci Gruber led the study, “The Grass Might Be Greener: Medical Marijuana Patients Exhibit Altered Brain Activity and Improved Executive Function after 3 Months of Treatment“. This study explored long term effects on brain health for medical cannabis patients.

After three months of treatment, study participants demonstrated better task performance in conjunction with better activation within the frontal cortex and an area of the brain called cingulate cortex. The cingulate cortex is in charge of aspects of emotion and memory. Study participants had measurably better results than their baseline data before they started cannabis therapy.

Gruber highlights that participants’ brain activation patterns also returned to normal activity patterns, which were similar to the patterns recorded in people not using medicinal cannabis. The study indicated improvements in brain pattern activity in medical cannabis patients after only three months of consumption. The study is ongoing and will follow up with patients for 24 months total.

Busting the Myth of Cannabis Use on Brain Health

While we have known about the challenging relationship between alcohol and brain health for decades. However, studies looking at the effects of cannabis on brain health have been biased. Researchers, up until recently, mainly focused on the negatives. But as cannabis slowly becomes a valuable part of modern medicine, and increasingly part of popular culture,we need to find out the truth.

Studies like those highlighted above help to shed light on the positive impacts cannabis use have on brain function. These new studies, no longer overshadowed by the War on Drugs, show that cannabis is a highly valuable medicinal substance. It’s almost impossible to make the same claims about alcohol. Alcohol, after decades of study, has always proven dangerous for your health. Brain health doesn’t improve with alcohol consumption, in the short or long term. On the other hand, there is an argument to be made that your brain may benefit from moderate cannabis use.

Cannabis Could Be First Line for Migraine Treatment

Migraine treatment is tricky and patients respond poorly to pharma. Cannabis is the best place to start for every reason covered in this article.

Migraine affects about 18% of women and 6% of men in the US and Europe, and 10% of the population worldwide. This means 700 million people suffer from this condition at any given moment. Effective and safe migraine treatment can be found in cannabis.

In 2016, the 2nd leading cause of all global disability and 2nd leading cause for neurological diseases was migraine. It costs $20 billion per year with 113 million lost workdays annually.

Pharmaceuticals For Migraine Treatment Not Effective For Most

Migraine treatment is divided into acute and preventative therapy. Most existing preventive therapies are adopted from the anti-epileptic, antidepressant and antihypertensive medications. However, most people cannot tolerate these drugs. This creates gaps in pharmaceutically-based migraine treatment.

The most frequently used acute medications include analgesics, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and triptans. Unfortunately, despite the only medication developed specifically for migraines, 25% of patients do not respond to triptans. In addition, only 1/3 of patients taking triptan are pain free at 2 hours, and 17-25% remain pain-free for 24 hours. This confirms a large unmet need for the migraine treatment!

What Research Says About Cannabis for Migraine Treatment

Medical literature regarding headaches and migraines shows supporting evidence in the cannabis/cannabinoids treatments for chronic headaches, migraines including chronic migraines, medication overuse headache, cluster headaches. To date there are no placebo-controlled studies of cannabis for headache disorders. However, there is a multicenter studyevaluating the efficacy and safety of the synthetic THC, dronabinol, in a dose inhaler for the treatment of migraine, but the results have not yet been published.

There was a study of the headache disorders, involving 30 patients for the treatment of the medication overuse headache (MOH). Participants demonstrated daily analgesic use for five years and failed at least 3 detoxification attempts. Each completed a course of either ibuprofen 400mg or nabilone (synthetic cannabinoid) 0.5mg for 8 weeks, following a 1-week washout and then 8 weeks of the other medication.

Results showed that nabilone (0.5mg) was superior in reducing daily analgesic intake, pain intensity, level of medication dependence and improved quality of life for these patients.

How Cannabis Treats Migraine

Over 540 phytochemicals, 18 different chemical classes and more than 100 different phytocannabinoids have been described in cannabis (so far). The most abundant cannabinoid is called tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and is converted to the ∆9-tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) in the presence of heat.

THC Has Powerful Anti-Inflammatory Action

THC binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors, with a stronger preference for CB1. Through this, THC reduces NMDA responses by 30-40%. NMDA mechanisms play a significant role in chronic pain syndromes, such as fibromyalgia and chronic migraine. THC also gives antioxidant neuroprotective benefits. Even more relevant, it has well documented analgesic and anti-inflammatory benefits with 20 times more anti-inflammatory action than aspirin and twice as much as hydrocortisone.

Terpene Entourage Effect Boosts THC Binding to CB1 Receptors

Terpenes and terpenoids are major contributors to the plant essential oils and resins, and responsible for the pharmacological properties of many plants, including cannabis. Terpenes form the largest group of phytochemicals. Cannabis contains about 200 different terpenes, but primary and secondary ones are present at the highest concentrations. They influence the binding of the THC to the CB1 receptor, and interact with other neurotransmitter receptors that contribute to cannabinoid-mediated analgesic effect.

Unfortunately, in most of these studies did not assess percentages of other cannabinoids and other important compounds, such as terpenes. Because of the known entourage effect of the cannabis and the influence of the cannabinoids and terpenes on one another, it is not clear in some cases if the study results are due to the THC alone or due to the contribution of other cannabinoids and terpenes.

A SALES manager claims CBD oil has cleared her psoriasis in just a few weeks – and has shared incredible before and after pictures to prove it.

“It gets worse with stress and I have a stressful job, so I’d have bad flare-ups.

“At its worst, it covered about 15 per cent of my body. I had it down both sides of my nose, marks down the side of my face, my neck and my ears as well.

“I would always wear make-up to cover it, but that just made it worse.

“It just kept spreading. I tried creams prescribed by doctors and natural remedies like coconut oil – but nothing ever worked.

“That was when I literally felt like I would try anything.”

“I had panic attacks, paranoia, I was constantly crying, it was all stress induced.

“I take one drop every other day now and I really notice a difference when I forget to take it.

“I’ve finally got my confidence back. I do worry about my anxiety coming back, but it’s been amazing.

Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist from Compultense University in Madrid, first reported in 1998 that TetraHydroCannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, induces tumor cell suicide while leaving healthy non-tumor cells alone.

Individual chief constables can now decide whether to arrest and charge, caution or warn those caught with the drug – or simply let them go.

The softening of approach was announced by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, the body that develops nationwide operational policies.

The organisation’s spokesman on drugs, Cleveland assistant chief constable Jason Harwin, said that asking cannabis users to go for treatment rather than prosecuting them could prevent re-offending and provide the ‘best outcome’.

The news follows last week’s disclosure by the chief constable of the West Midlands force, Dave Thompson, that his officers do not even give official warnings to young cannabis users because it would be ‘disastrous for their life chances’.

Mr Harwin, who is NPCC ‘lead for drugs’, said: ‘There is strong evidence to suggest that recommending minor offenders for early intervention treatment instead of pursuing convictions can prevent re-offending and result in the best outcome for both the user and the criminal justice system.

‘It is a matter for chief constables, in liaison with their police and crime commissioners, to determine operational priorities.’

Suggesting to users that they opt for drug treatment means there is no arrest or even a minor criminal sanction, but there is no pressure on the user to take up the treatment.

Possession of a Class B drug such as cannabis can lead to a five-year prison sentence and an unlimited fine. Growing or dealing cannabis can theoretically bring 14 years’ jail and an unlimited fine.

Mr Harwin, whose organisation includes the 43 police forces in England and Wales, said that chief constables would continue to pursue large-scale drug gangsters.

However, he added: ‘There are a range of options for dealing with those found in possession of cannabis or who cultivate the plant that are proportionate to individual circumstances – these include out-of-court disposals and cannabis warnings, as well as prosecution.’

His remarks provoked fresh criticism from anti-drug campaigners. Drugs analyst Kathy Gyngell, co-editor of the Conservative Woman website, said: ‘This is astonishing in view of the cumulative relationship between cannabis and violence. This is symptomatic of the politically influenced easier-to-say-yes-than-no culture of present day policing.’

David Raynes of the National Drug Prevention Alliance said: ‘Deliberately undermining the law on cannabis is no part of the NPCC’s function.’

In response to the NPCC statement, the Home Office said that police chiefs are expected to enforce the law. A spokesman said: ‘Possession of cannabis is a criminal offence.’
