Learning how to select areas of an image is of primary importance when working with Photoshop since you must first select what you want to edit. Selections allow you to isolate areas in your image and apply different effects or filters without affecting the rest of the image. There are four basic selection tools in the toolbox.

1. The marquee tool allows you to select rectangular or elliptical areas in an image.
2. The lasso tool lets you draw a freehand selection area, with either curves or straight lines.
3. The Spot Healing Brush removes blemishes, imperfections, and red eye.
4. The move tool let you move a selection marquee or objects on a single layer.
5. The brush tool paints brush strokes.
6. The text tool creates text or type on a photo.
7. The zoom tool magnifies or reduces the size of an image.
8. Photoshop uses the foreground color to paint, fill, and stroke selections and the background color to make gradient fills and fill in the erased areas of an image.

Layers
Every Photoshop image contains one or more layers. Every new file is created with a background, which can be converted to a layer. When you scan an image and open it in Photoshop, it is placed on the background. Layers are a fundamental part of Photoshop's versatility.
A layer is a transparency sheet with an image on it. You can edit, transform, or add filters to a layer independently from other layers. You can make one layer alter the look of a layer above or below it. You can save a file with the layers and easily change your design later, by editing one or more of the layers.
Masks
Masks can be used to block out one area of an image or protect it from manipulations. A mask is a selection shown as a grayscale image: the white areas are selected, the black areas are not.

Smoke Effect in photoshop

Step one, open a new image, it doesn't really matter what size but be sure to set your background color to black. (this effect generally looks its best on a black background.) Make a new layer and select the "Polygonal lasso tool" and create an abstract shape that looks similar to the example below.(It doesn't really matter what color you use here either, but just don't make it too dark, and feel free to experiment.)

2. Now we can start our highlights of our smoke. Select the "Dodge" tool and make the brush size around "50" and the "Range" to "highlights." Now use this tool around the edges and corners of your shape. Next, select the "Burn tool" and use it in the middle and wherever you see fit. You should have somthing that looks like this:

3. Here we can make it look like smoke now. Go to "filter"/"Distort"/"Wave." And make the settings as follows:

- Generators "5"
- Wavelength "10"/"120"
- Amplitude "5"/"35"
- Scale at "100%" for both.

4. Right after you have used the "wave" filter you can go to "Edit"/"Fade-Wave" and set the opacity to "50%." Now repeat this distort and fade method many times, or untill you think it looks best.

5. To make this effect look even better you may have to "distort", resize, and change the blending modes when fading a bit. And lastly, to make it different colors instead of the same throughout. make a new layer and use the "brush" tool all over the place using different colors. then set that layers "blending mode" to "Overlay." And there you have it, a simple yet effective smoke method!

It's amazing what you can do with some Adobe Photoshop training and a little time!

2. Make the base of the bolt
Use the polygon lasso tool and click out a blast beam selection in perspective like you see here.Make sure it's on it's own layer. Fill it with a good bolt color...light blues, purples, greens and reds are good. Make sure it's a bright color high on the saturation.

3. Getting in touch with your inner bolt
Now create a new blank layer above the outer bolt. ctrl+click on the outerbolt layer to make the bolt a selection. Contract this selection by a few pixels and fill this new contracted selection with white on it's own layer. You should now have something like you see here.

4. Blurry
Apply a gaussian blur to each layer. Play with the settings... We used a 2.5 pixel blur...you may need less or more depending on the size of your picture.
This technique also makes a good light saber.

5. snap, crackle, pop
On another new blank layer, grab your paintbrush, set it to 1 pixel, 100% opacity, normal blendingmode and brush out some lightning forks along the beam.

6. Glow
If you have photoshop 5 or higher you can apply the "OuterGlow" layer effect to the lightning layer. Use the eyedropper to select the outer glow color from the beam itself and then you're done.

Recently, we launched our Socialize service to help you as the publisher distribute your feed via social networks, with the first network being Twitter. If you use Blogger, you can already connect your feed to Buzz via the "connected sites" link in Buzz.

But it's equally important in the social world to make sure your subscribers can also share your feed content easily on these social networks. FeedFlare helps enable this by allowing you to configure links in your feed that promote sharing. You can do this by going to the Optimize tab FeedBurner and choosing FeedFlare, and then of course, adding some flare.

Now, we won't berate you for only doing the "bare minumum," nor do we recommend having "37 pieces of flare" in your feed - but we do think you should express yourself with at least a little flare that helps your subscribers move your content around these social networks a little easier.

To that end, just yesterday we enabled the official "Post to Google Buzz" FeedFlare in our catalog, which easily allows users to repost your content to Google Buzz, and then automatically updates the label with the number of times it was posted.

These links appear as so in your feed (though the exact presentation will vary depending on where your feed is being displayed):

Also included in our official catalog are "Share on Facebook" and others that may be relevant for your audience. If you are an old time FeedBurner user, it may be time to revisit your FeedFlare setup and add some of these new ones.

In addition, if you don't see the FeedFlare you need, you can always develop one using the FeedFlare API which is documented in our FeedFlare Developer Guide.
If your blog takes a long time to load, many readers may leave your blog before they have the chance to read it. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help your blog load faster and attract more users:

Posts
Your blog's load time can be affected by the number of posts you display on your main page. You can easily edit the number of posts displayed of the main page from the Settings | Formatting tab. You can then select the number of posts you want to display on the main page. We recommend displaying 10 or fewer posts on the main page.

Third Party JavaScript and Links
For optimal blog load speed, we recommend using Google/Blogger widgets, JavaScipt and links. However, if you need to use third party JavaScipt and links, your blog will load much faster if you put all JavaScript at the bottom of your blog. If you have third party JavaScript and links in your sidebar, put them in at the bottom of the sidebar.

Images and Media
The more images, videos and other multi-media you have on your blog the longer it will take to load. However, images and other multimedia are important to attracting users to your blog, so it is important to optimize the load speed of your images and media. Here are a few tips to increase the load speed of your media:

Decrease the size of your images or use thumbnails that link to the full-size image.

If you use third party images, consider uploading them to Picasa Web Albums via the Blogger post editor.

If you have a large number of images to display, you can upload all your images (from a vacation or event) to a Picasa Web Album and link to the album in your post or sidebar.

Put the .abr file you've downloaded into the folder /Users/{username}/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Presets/Brushes (on mac OS X) or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop\Presets\Brushes (on Windows) .

Next on the list you choose 'Load Brushes'

Forums provide a very necessary platform for online workers to network and draw on the vast amount of constantly changing Internet business ideas, knowledge and information available on the Internet.

Keeping up to date with what is happening online is vital in order to be aware of important changes that could have an effect our Internet home business as well as our online income. Forums are the ideal place to get that information. By keeping abreast of what is going on in the online world about for example algorithm changes or amendments and changes to programs we are involved with will help us prepare in advance in order to avoid shock and disappointment.

We have the great opportunity to being kept informed by joining a variety of good forums that are active and related to Internet marketing, online home business, SEO and Internet business building ideas and have an experienced, solid and knowledgeable membership.

By networking with one another and keeping up with the current online news, which we will find in these forums, then we will all be aware of any changes that are either happening or are in the pipeline that could affect our Internet home business or online income.

It is in the forums that we hear about the latest releases of software, the latest products, strategies or packages and also the very important feedback from the experienced members. This way the newer members will stand a good chance of avoiding any new scams as well as be aware of any really good products or service that are recommended by trusted and well known members.

While drawing on all the valuable knowledge and constructively contributing in the forums, the best bit is being able to quietly promote your own site or Internet home business in the space at the bottom of every post - your own signature. So be sure to complete your profile when you join a forum and set up your signature with your keywords linked to your URL. Check the rules relating to signatures as they do differ from forum to forum.

When setting up your profile you will have the option to display the country you are from. We're happy to announce that Blogger users, with just a few clicks, are able to do both at the same time.

Yes, this year for Halloween, AdSense for feeds is putting on a Blogger costume and allowing all Blogger publishers to easily monetize your RSS and Atom feeds directly from the Blogger interface, in the same way you set up AdSense on your blog beforehand.

To set this up, go to Blogger and select the blog you wish to monetize on your Blogger Dashboard, and select "Monetize." This will give you some basic options for configuring ads, and if you already have connected your Blogger feed to FeedBurner, will confirm that the proper feed is being configured. AdSense for feeds will automatically pick the right ad sizes for your users, content, and end medium.

After setup, you will be able to view your AdSense reports (including feed revenue) directly from the Blogger Dashboard, as well as from your AdSense account. Give important emails brightly colored labels, and you'll be able to scan your inbox and quickly find the good stuff.

Learn more »

Clean up your inbox using "Move to" -- it works just like folders.

You can use the "Move to" button at the top of your inbox to easily move a message out of your inbox and add a label at the same time -- just as if you were moving it to a folder. If you have lots of labels, you can pick the one you want by typing the first couple characters and let auto-complete find the right one.

Learn more »

Search your mail instead of sorting.

Instead of sorting by date or sender, you can enter keywords in the Google Mail search box to find the exact message you're looking for. While messages in your bin get deleted after 30 days, archived messages are kept forever. Archiving messages moves them out of your inbox and into "All Mail" for safekeeping, so you can search for them later. It's like moving old email to a giant storage room that you never have to organise.

Learn more »

Import your email and contacts from your old address.

If you're new to Google Mail, you can import your mail and contacts from other email providers, including Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, and many more from the "Accounts and Import" tab under Google Mail Settings. It also steals all the niche keywords your industry happens to be focusing on.

Keyword Country claims that a keyword research done through it’s software can yield up to 230% more traffic than any other keyword research tool available. In this product review, we
will find out how far it lives up to such claims.

Basic Keyword Research (Network Search):
Just type in a keyword and Keyword Country will fetch you a huge list of keywords, which
will be sorted by profitability along with other alternate keywords that your audience is searching for.

This mode of keyword research is database powered. Keyword Country claims to be the world's biggest keyword
database and displays useful information like:

Google Searches

Yahoo Search Volume

Google Competition (inanchor intitle)

Yahoo Competition

Advertisers on Google

Yahoo Advertisers

Google Max CPC

MSN Search Volume

Google Clicks

MSN Competition

AdSense EPC (estimated)

MSN Advertisers

R/S Ratio (Google, Yahoo, MSN)

KEI Ratio (Google, Yahoo, MSN)

And much more….

Since the data is too much to look at, an advanced search can help you can narrow down the huge keyword lists to get the exact keywords you want.

Watch Network Search Video >>

Besides keywords and their data, the related keywords list is quite useful and you often get new ideas for niches to target and content ideas that can help you tap into the audience that
you are trying to target.

Realtime Keyword Research:

This is another mode of keyword research and is even more powerful than network keyword
research. It not only extracts keywords from major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask but also gets keywords from KC's Network Search and, most importantly, it reverse
engineers any industry's top 100 high ranking websites for each keyword in the list. It also extracts niche keywords that those websites are targeting to rank high and tap traffic out of
search engines.

This type of keyword research easily finds new born keywords that industry is using actively but that free keyword tools like those offered by Google, Yahoo and MSN will take around
2-6 months to show and will only show if the keyword is able to make to their top 100 or 150 most searched keyword lists.

Realtime Keyword Research:

Blocks junk keywords

Filters duplicate keywords

Keeps the keyword list laser targeted

Clusters the keywords in ready-to-go format

Gives you a great amount of control on your keyword research

Watch Realtime Search Video >>

Stealing Competitor's Profitable Keywords - Site Analysis

This is a very powerful tool and I couldn’t find anything similar to this tool anywhere on the web that comes even close to KC’s Site Analysis. It lets you practically reverse engineer the
SEO strategies and PPC campaigns of your competitors. It can detect the search engine keywords (paid or non-paid) that are responsible for up to 96% of traffic to any given website.

Just load up your competitor list in Site Analysis and Keyword Country will rip all the keywords that your competitors are using on their pages, along with the HTML tag details in
which they can be found.

For SEO:
Finds keywords that are common between all top rankers

Finds the LSI matches they are using

Finds Low competition / high traffic keywords

Details of other niches that they are focusing on

For PPC Advertising:

Analyze landing pages and extract profitable keywords out of them

Profitable Adwords keywords that they have found profitable after spending thousands of
dollars on market research

Site analysis even lets you analyze your own content before making it public to search engines to ensure that the keywords for which you are optimizing your content are actually
there in your content.

Watch Site Analysis Video >>

Semantic Keyword Research / Related Search Terms:

This keyword research lists all the LSI terms or semantically related keywords of a given
keyword. These are the keywords that you need to include in your web pages to naturally rank higher on search engines. Keyword results come with ‘Search Volume Estimates’,
which make it easier for you to judge the keywords to go for. Additionally, it also allows you to further dig your keyword deeper in Network Search or Realtime Search.

Watch Site Analysis Video >>

Keywords Research In 32+ Languages:

Keyword Country is the only keyword engine that gets you keywords in French, Spanish,Dutch, German and 32 other languages (and does it the right way). Foreign language
support options enhance your keyword digging reach and allow you to generate your keyword list in languages other than English

This is ideal when your audience speaks multiple languages and lets you target non-English speaking regions.

Misspellings Keyword Research:

Misspellings are the keywords that are cheaper to buy for Adwords campaigns and less competitive to achieve top search engine rankings. Keyword Country covers more than 8
sources of misspellings including mobile search misspellings and popular misspellings of English and 31 other languages. Here you can find many keywords that have less
competition, considerable traffic, are cheaper to buy and easier to target.

Watch Misspellings Video >>

Niche Keywords Brainstorming With Keyword Map

Keyword Map sorts the keywords in a directory structure that helps you find the most
popular niches that are driving traffic to your industry. It helps you uncover popular niches that are related to your main keyword but you are not targeting right now. A good amount of
traffic flows towards these niches and the level of that increases every single month. It gives you excellent ideas on which you can build content and increase your website traffic and
helps you discover many new opportunities. It is ideal when you are looking for new niches to compete in

Watch Keyword Map Video >>

24x7 Customer Service

The customer service offered by Keyword Country is excellent. I can personally recommend it given the fact that I had some questions to ask and all were answered fully and in simple
language. I accessed the Live Chat option but there were several ways in which I could have contacted Keyword Country to find out exactly what I needed to know quickly and efficiently. I
didn’t have to waste any time before using the services they offered and increasing my income. If only all providers of software services like this one went above and beyond the call of duty as
much! I am most definitely satisfied with the high level of service and would heartily recommend it.

Summary:

So what did I end up with after using Keyword Country?

Strengths:

Largest keyword database

Digs deeper into industry for keywords

Supports keyword research in 32+ languages

Shows lots of useful data for each keyword

Steals competitors' profitable keywords (legally!)

LSI / Semantic keyword research

Misspelling keyword research

Exports keywords in ready to go format

Excellent brainstorming tools

Weak Aspects:

Owing to detailed keyword research, it may become slow at times

Your computer IP may be temporarily banned by some online keyword tools for heavy web crawling

Keyword Country is the most complete keyword tool in the market and I feel that this tool is
well worth the investment. I can honestly say that Keyword Country has quickly become my new first choice tool for researching keyword phrases. I now use Keyword Country and my
keyword research ability has never, ever been so strong. I have also used several other programs but the Keyword Country is what I would recommend to anyone. This tool is
dynamite!

Get Access to Keyword Country
Watch Videos of Keyword Country

Compare Keyword Country with other Keyword Tools

Making Money from Your Website with Google AdSense

Google AdSense is the Google program where you can host pay-per-click ads on your Website. When someone clicks an ad, you earn money. Simple as that.

Is it really as easy to make money with Google AdSense as many would lead you to believe? Now that I've become heavily involved with managing Google AdSense programs for my clients, I can see it's not all play and no work.

Unfortunately, a lot of people bought into the idea that there was a lot of easy money to be made and they are now finding out they aren't making nearly as much as they thought they would. Additionally, Google has a lot of prohibited practices when it comes to AdSense, and too many Webmasters are finding out they violated Google's policies after the fact - often because they never bothered to read the AdSense policies in the first place.

Webmasters must not only comply with AdSense policies, but their Websites must also comply with Google's webmaster policies.

Prerequisites for Making Money with AdSense
To make money with Google AdSense you need plenty of traffic coming in to your site or there won't be anyone to click the ads. Website promotion techniques, especially search engine optimization and article marketing will bring more traffic to your site. You also need to have content that will attract the ads with the highest Pay Per Click (PPC) rate that are relevant to that content. Then, you need to lay out your web pages so the ads blend in with your site. Studies have revealed that people who visit sites that contain ads that use colors that are not in harmony with the actual Web site tend to develop "ad blindness". Meaning no matter how much traffic comes into your site, chances are no one will click the ads because they'll be ignoring them. If no one clicks, you make nothing.
Dealing with Competitors' Advertisements

If you offer products or services on your Website, the first thing you'll notice when you begin hosting PPC ads is that many of the ads are coming from your competitors. Therefore, you'll want to put ads on pages that aren't earning you any money, or do like I did and not put ads on your site until you're so busy anyway you'd rather make a few dollars off of your competitors than to continue turning business away with nothing to show for it.

Google AdSense allows you to specify up to 200 URLs for sites you want to bar from placing ads on your pages. The problem is that most times you won't know the competitors are out there until their ads appear.

Google Money Making Ad Options
Google offers three ways to make money from them:

Google AdSense for Content - A variety of size and shape ads for placing in your content are available. These can be text or image ads or both - you specify what you'll allow. Ad units are full ads. Link units are simply a strip of text links that your visitors might want to click. Google allows you to put up to 3 Ad Units and 1 Link unit on each page of your Web site, provided you follow its policies - both for AdSense and for Webmasters.

Google AdSense for Search - This places a search box on your Web site. When a user enters a term and conducts a search, a search results page opens, that hosts more pay-per-click ads. You can customize the color scheme of the search results page to harmonize with your web site.

Google Referrals - Here you make money by referring visitors to use a Google product, like AdSense, AdWords, the Google Toolbar and other Google software. Just like Google AdSense for Content and AdSense for Search, Google generates the code that you paste into the desired location on your web page. You can choose from a wide variety of buttons and text links of different colors. As an example of how Google Referrals works, if someone goes to your site and clicks the link and signs up for an AdSense account, when that person earns a $100 from Google AdSense and receives a payout from Google, you'll also receive $100 for referring them. This is a great idea to me, because you can be the world's worst Google AdSense advertiser, but if an ad dynamo happens to visit your site and uses your referral link, you can make money anyway!

Google AdSense Payments

Google will not issue an AdSense payment until your earnings exceed $100. Unfortunately, there are loads of Google AdSense Forum entries about website operators who accumulated $90 or more in click through earnings only to get banned from Google and not get paid anything at all before they ever reached $100. This may be because Google doesn't take a close look to see if you're complying with their guidelines until it comes time to pay you. So yes, there's a lot more to the story than meets the eye.

Managing a Public Relations Campaign

Basics for Developing a Solid PR Strategy for Your Public Relations Campaign
For small business or even individuals, managing your public relations campaign may seem impossible. Don't ignore the many opportunities you have to get free coverage with your own PR campaign, though.
1. Press Releases
Any effective PR campaign is going to include press releases. When you have news about your company and products, write a press release and distribute it to the appropriate media outlets. Be sure you know how to write a press release because there is a big difference between advertising and public relations.

2. Press Kits
Your press kit, or media kit, is an invaluable tool you can use to promote your company. From trade shows to product launches, there are a number of good reasons you must create a press kit.

3. Use Your Blog
Your corporate or employee blog is an excellent way to keep you visible to your customers. Making your blog a regular part of your public relations campaign gives you exposure to customers, journalists and it even provides you with word of mouth advertising.

4. Working With the Media
Make no mistake. The media is not required to give you coverage. Public relations is your ability to get free publicity. Knowing how to work with the media will help you come off as a pro even if it's your first media event. You also want to develop a long-lasting relationship with the media so you can start to develop contacts in the industry as well.

5. Organizing Media Events
PR is more than blitzing the media with your press releases. Organizing media events is an outstanding way to get multiple media outlets to come to you and give you free exposure.

Be creative when coming up with ideas. Just because you have a news conference doesn't mean the media will show up. A groundbreaking ceremony with a local celebrity or other prominent figure to address the crowd increases your chances of getting publicity over the same event with just you and your employees sticking some shovels in the ground. If you're working with a children's charity to raise money, the media will be more likely to show up if you're hosting a fun event like snow skiing in summer for the children who the charity helps rather than you just filling out a check to hand over to the director of the charity.
6. Learn Crisis Management
You can learn crisis management from corporate giants because not every aspect of public relations is going to be pleasant. You may have to deal with product recalls, lawsuits or even deaths of employees while on the job, for example. The numerous possibilities of what can go wrong are something you have to be prepared for before they happen. You can't anticipate everything that can occur but you can learn effective crisis management to prepare you for the future.

Advertising in a Bad Economy.

In a recession, the first dollars that a company usually cuts come from the advertising budget. Advertising in a recession is actually a smart business move to grow your business now and for the future.

McGraw-Hill Research conducted a study of U.S. recessions from 1980-1985. Out of the 600 business-to-business companies analyzed, the ones who continued to advertise during the 1981-1982 recession hit a 256-percent growth by 1985 over their competitors that eliminated or decreased spending.

American Business Press analyzed 143 companies during the economic downturn back in 1974 and 1975. Companies that advertised in those years saw the highest growth in sales and net income during the recession and the two years that followed.

The numbers aren't a fluke. They prove there's a reward for companies who are aggressive with their advertising efforts in a recession.

Here are even more reasons why you need to advertise your business in a bad economy:

Your Competition Won't
Most small businesses have a limited advertising budget. During a recession, it's easy to make up some of those dollars by holding back on advertising.

All that really does is open up the marketplace for that company's competitors. The presence the business has spent ad dollars on to build up is now an open field for the competitors that are willing to advertise.

Let's say you own an auto parts store. Consumers still need your company, no matter what the economy. Cars still break down. They still need windshield wipers and people will even buy those tree air fresheners. Your company can be the one the customer chooses because you've made your own presence known.

You Can Create a Long-Term Position for Your Business
Standing out in the marketplace is hard enough when you and your competition are battling it out in the ad world. As your competition cuts back on ad spending, your advertising can cut through that clutter.

Consumers may not be spending as much but they are still spending. If you're not the company they think of when they do spend, your sales will decrease. While your competition is cutting back, you have the chance to be the company consumers spend with now while gaining their future business as you continue to advertise in good times and bad.

To Establish an Advertising Contact
This is the perfect time to establish a relationship with the person you'll be doing business with at TV stations, radio stations, magazines, online, etc. An Account Executive can be your go-to contact to get your ads in prime placement, negotiate good deals on rates and even get extras thrown in for your ads.

You can also use this new relationship to further grow your business. Talk with the AE about sponsorships, advertising trades and partnering.

Get Better Deals on Advertising
This is where you can use your new advertising contact. Ad inventory still has to be sold. TV stations, radio stations and magazines still have budgets to make.

Now's a good time to get deals on your ad space. You can get more exposure through more ad placement and even freebies added into the mix. If you're trying to get airtime on TV, for example, a station might also offer online advertising on its website as part of the deal. Negotiations are easier for the advertiser in a recession.

You Can Speak Directly to Customers Looking for Bargains
Don't be afraid to address the bad economy in your advertising. Customers are looking for good deals. Some national advertisers are a prime example of this.

Travelocity aired a simple commercial to announce its Silver Lining Sale. In the first three seconds, you see the words, "We know times are tight."

Wal-Mart is running an effective ad campaign. The commercials don't say, "Hey, come on out. We've got electronics, clothes, sporting goods, prescriptions and more at a low cost." Instead, the ads focus on very specific items and how much you'll save over a year by purchasing these items directly from Wal-Mart. The world's largest retailer posted its best sales performance in nine months, with a 5.1-percent sales gain in February 2009 as a result.

Hyundai's ads touting the Assurance Plus program is another example of an advertiser that's not ignoring these tough economic times. In its ads, Hyundai announces its program that will pay your payment for three months if you lose your income. If you still can't pay after three months, take your car back to the dealership.

Is it an effective program? Hyundai has already seen a 4.9-percent sales gain as of March 2009 while Toyota is down 36-percent.

In a bad economy, there are many opportunities to expose your business to new customers that aren't always possible in a good economy. Every one of them can be explored to help you solidify your place in business and stand out from your competitors.

10 Differences Between Advertising and Public Relations

If you're searching for a career or trying to promote your company, you may have questions about advertising vs. public relations. These two industries are very different even though they're commonly confused as being one and the same. The following ten properties just scratch the surface of the many differences between advertising and public relations.

1. Paid Space or Free Coverage

Advertising:
The company pays for ad space. You know exactly when that ad will air or be published.

Public Relations:
Your job is to get free publicity for the company. From news conferences to press releases, you're focused on getting free media exposure for the company and its products/services.

2. Creative Control Vs. No Control

Advertising:
Since you're paying for the space, you have creative control on what goes into that ad.

Public Relations:
You have no control over how the media presents your information, if they decide to use your info at all. They're not obligated to cover your event or publish your press release just because you sent something to them.

3. Shelf Life

Advertising:
Since you pay for the space, you can run your ads over and over for as long as your budget allows. An ad generally has a longer shelf life than one press release.

Public Relations:
You only submit a press release about a new product once. You only submit a press release about a news conference once. The PR exposure you receive is only circulated once. An editor won't publish your same press release three or four times in their magazine.

4. Wise Consumers

Advertising:
Consumers know when they're reading an advertisement they're trying to be sold a product or service.
"The consumer understands that we have paid to present our selling message to him or her, and unfortunately, the consumer often views our selling message very guardedly," Paul Flowers, president of Dallas-based Flowers & Partners, Inc., said. "After all, they know we are trying to sell them."

Public Relations:
When someone reads a third-party article written about your product or views coverage of your event on TV, they're seeing something you didn't pay for with ad dollars and view it differently than they do paid advertising.
"Where we can generate some sort of third-party 'endorsement' by independent media sources, we can create great credibility for our clients' products or services," Flowers said.

5. Creativity or a Nose for News

Advertising:
In advertising, you get to exercise your creativity in creating new ad campaigns and materials.

Public Relations:
In public relations, you have to have a nose for news and be able to generate buzz through that news. You exercise your creativity, to an extent, in the way you search for new news to release to the media.

6. In-House or Out on the Town

Advertising:
If you're working at an ad agency, your main contacts are your co-workers and the agency's clients. If you buy and plan ad space on behalf of the client like Media Director Barry Lowenthal does, then you'll also interact with media sales people.

Public Relations:
You interact with the media and develop a relationship with them. Your contact is not limited to in-house communications. You're in constant touch with your contacts at the print publications and broadcast media.

7. Target Audience or Hooked Editor

Advertising:
You're looking for your target audience and advertising accordingly. You wouldn't advertise a women's TV network in a male-oriented sports magazine.

Public Relations:
You must have an angle and hook editors to get them to use info for an article, to run a press release or to cover your event.

8. Limited or Unlimited Contact

Advertising:
Some industry pros such as Account Executive Trey Sullivan have contact with the clients. Others like copywriters or graphic designers in the agency may not meet with the client at all.

Public Relations:
In public relations, you are very visible to the media. PR pros aren't always called on for the good news.
If there was an accident at your company, you may have to give a statement or on-camera interview to journalists. You may represent your company as a spokesperson at an event. Or you may work within community relations to show your company is actively involved in good work and is committed to the city and its citizens.

9. Special Events

Advertising:
If your company sponsors an event, you wouldn't want to take out an ad giving yourself a pat on the back for being such a great company. This is where your PR department steps in.

Public Relations:
If you're sponsoring an event, you can send out a press release and the media might pick it up. They may publish the information or cover the event.

10. Writing Style

Advertising:
Buy this product! Act now! Call today! These are all things you can say in an advertisement. You want to use those buzz words to motivate people to buy your product.

Public Relations:
You're strictly writing in a no-nonsense news format. Any blatant commercial messages in your communications are disregarded by the media.

Earth Day Freebie: Download a Free Chapter of Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home

Stores opened in 1998, making it one of the oldest, fully hosted ecommerce platforms available. The biggest strength of Yahoo! Stores is its immense, stable and reliable infrastructure. That means you don't have to worry about find your own Web hosting or worrying about site outages. Additionally, because of its long history, a large and experienced community of freelance designers and developers are available to help you customize your store. The biggest weakness of Yahoo! Stores is also its long history. There is a lot of legacy code and features added on top of other features. That means all the various options and features are confusing for new Yahoo! Store owners, and its admin interface is not optimized for ease of use. Yahoo! Stores also uses a proprietary language called RTML that is only useful for customizing Yahoo! Stores (good thing there's a large network of developers you can hire). Did I say that the right way?

There are often several ways to say the same thing in English. So, how do you know if the way you are phrasing your sentences is correct? I would suggest that you compare various sentences in Google and pick the sentence that is most popular among the search results.

For example, I searched the sentence “What do you mean by that?” on Google and received 489,000 search results. I then looked up the sentence “What is it that you mean?” and found 74,300 search results. From this comparison, I would deduce that “What do you mean by that?” is generally more widely used as an English expression than “What is it that you mean?”

2. Should I say that over here?”

Thanks to the movie “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” the phrase “Yeah Baby!” has become a popular slang phrase in America. Is this generally accepted slang in Italy? What about the United Kingdom? What about Russia?

To investigate this, I searched the phrase “Yeah Baby” and ask Google to only return search results from pages in certain locales. For example, the command site:uk only returns web pages that are hosted in the United Kingdom.

“Yeah Baby” site:uk returned 37,000 search results from the United Kingdom.
“Yeah Baby” site:it returned 5,520 search results from Italy.
“Yeah Baby” site:ru returned 17.900 search results from Russia.

So, from this experiment, I would ascertain that the phrase “Yeah Baby” is more popular in the United Kingdom than Russia and much more popular than in Italy.

Make sense?

3. Is there a word missing?

By using an asterix in a sentence, Google will assume that a word is missing and search for phrases that it thinks fills in that blank. For example…

By searching, How are you * today?

Google returns search results that includes:

* “How are you doing today?”
* “How are you feeling today?”
* “How are you guys today?”
* “How are you coping today?”

Click here to see for yourself and pay attention to the phrases that are bolded.

4. Is there another word I could use?

By using Google’s Tilde command (~), you can find words that Google thinks is synonymous to the word you are searching for. For example, if I wanted to find words that are similar and/or associated with “coffee,” I would perform the following search:

~coffee

Click here to see the results. What you will notice is that certain words are bolded and these are the keywords to focus on. In this case, these keywords include: Starbucks, Starbucks Cofee, caffeine and cafe.

These are just a few tips, let me know what you think?

How to manage your online identity with Google Alerts

When you are looking for work and/or interviewing for a job, the last thing you want is a recruiter finding that risque picture of you dancing naked in the Cayman Islands. (That sort of thing is frowned upon by some employers.) Well, you could do a search on Google now to see what comes up, but what if something new hits the web that you are unaware of until its too late? No worries mate! I have the cure that ails you and its called Google Alerts.

From their website:

Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

What I suggest you do is type in your name in quotes and any derivative of your name as well. For example, say your name is John Doe, in the search terms slot I would add:

“john doe” OR “johnathan doe” OR “johnny doe”

Like so…

I would leave the “Type” slot as Comprehensive, so Google will search for any mention of your name in other places beyond websites (Videos for example).

I would leave the “How Often” slot at “Once a day,” but that’s a judgement call. You have the option of making it “As it happens” or Weekly; its up to you.

After that, simply add in your email address and wait. Google will send you updates about how your name appears on the web (and other places) and you can keep up with your reputation.

Now, one thing that you might be very well aware of is that you might not be the only person with your name. In that case, I would advise creating alerts that include the city you live in, the school you attended, party places you have frequented and such.

Here are a few examples to consider when using Google Alerts:

“John Doe” Atlanta “Ga tech”

“Johnny Doe” NY “Club Infinity”

“John Doe” “Cayman Islands” (party OR event)

Hope this helps!

How to create a variety of money in Internet
