Definition of Fraud: “In a broad strokes definition, fraud is a deliberate misrepresentation which causes another person to suffer damages, usually monetary losses.”

Like many, I have had negative experiences one eBay. However, I’ve also had negative experiences with unscrupulous people in the real world. The truth is that eBay is just a microcosm of real-life society where 99.9% of people are good nature.

Have you had a bad experience on eBay? I spoke with someone recently who said that a “fraudulent experience on eBay” ruined their desires to use eBay as a sales platform.” That seems just a bit immature, don’t you think? Just a few weeks ago my nine year old daughter left her board shorts on a lounge chair while swimming in the pool (at a nationally recognized vacation resort). When she returned, her shorts were gone. Someone stole her shorts. Fraud and theft. How should my nine year old respond? Should she never swim in a public pool again?

Of course not. But, she can learn a valuable life lesson of how to protect herself and her property. And to that we discover the purpose of this article. How can we protect ourselves from potential fraud on eBay?

Fraud on eBay, while small in proportion to the number of transactions that take place, is a real issue for the unsuspecting eBay member. Follow the following points to reduce the potential of fraud on eBay in your online trading adventures.

Fraud Tip #1: Understand Phishing

A new word to the Websters’ Dictionary for 2005, this has become #1 of the top areas of Fraud Alert in the history of the internet. Here is the definition from dictionary.com: “A method of identity theft carried out through the creation of a website that seems to represent a legitimate company. The visitors to the site, thinking they are buying something from a real business, submit their personal information to the site. The criminals then use the personal information for their own purposes, or sell the information to other criminal parties.“ In specific terms, it may relate to your eBay membership, PayPal account, bank account, credit card, or other account where you need an ID, password and/or personal information.

Fraud on eBay can occur when you receive a phishing email that sounds 100% legitimate. It might come from: support@… And looks like this: “Dear eBay member, You have received this warning because we have strong reason to believe that your eBay account had been recently compromised and it could be used by a third party without your authorization. In order to prevent any fraudulent activity from occurring we are required to open an investigation into this matter. To speed up this process, you are required to verify your eBay account by following the link below.”

a. Here’s what happens: when you click on the link listed, you are taken to a web page that looks exactly the same as the sign-in page — for example, you are sure you are at the eBay sign-in page. You are asked for personal information, including ID and password, etc.

How to protect yourself? You need to know that eBay, PayPal or any other secure site will NEVER ask for your personal, identifying information in an email. What should you do? Delete the email and tell yourself you’re not going to fall victim to a phishing scam.

A high percentage of online and eBay fraud is eliminated simply by understanding phishing and knowing how to deal with it.

Fraud Tip #2. Only Buy From Sellers With an Established Feedback Score

Love or hate eBay’s feedback system, but is has its purpose. By doing your due diligence you can weed out potentially fraudulent eBay sellers simply by reviewing their feedback score. Pay particular attention to the last 90 days and be sure read all the comments posted on the first 3 pages. A sellers feedback score will is increasingly important if you are purchasing a high ticket item. Fraud on eBay can be dramatically reduced by following this Fraud Tip.

Fraud Tip #3. Do Not Pay With Western Union

The chance of Fraud on eBay has been reduced through eBay’s own internal policing of buyer payment options. If you are going to pay for an item you purchase on eBay – always use PayPal as you are covered by PayPal’s buyer protection program.

Here is eBay’s latest “Safe Payments Policy:

“Permitted on eBay.com: Sellers may offer to accept PayPal, credit cards including Mastercard/Visa /Amex/Discover, debit cards and bank electronic payments online for eBay purchases. Sellers may also offer to accept bank-to-bank transfers, often known as bank wire transfers or bank cash transfers. Sellers may accept COD (cash on delivery) or cash for in person transactions. Sellers may offer to accept payment through Certapay and Propay. Sellers may offer to accept personal checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, certified checks and other negotiable instruments.

Not permitted on eBay.com: Sellers may not solicit buyers to mail cash. Sellers may not ask buyers to send cash through instant cash transfer services (non-bank, point-to-point cash transfers) such as Western Union or Moneygram. Sellers may not ask buyers to pay with Stormpay. Finally, sellers may not request payment through online payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy.”

With regards to cash payments on eBay, “The U.S. Postal Service tells us it’s unsafe, and now eBay is telling everyone that it is unsafe,” said Matt Halprin, eBay’s global policy VP. “So if a seller solicits or encourages offers to accept cash, [they are] encouraging unsafe payment methods and we do remove that seller’s listing.”

eBay Fraud, which accounts for only a small fraction of one percent of all transactions can be significantly be reduced by your use of PayPal.

Fraud Tip #4. Preventative Measures - Tips For Your Protection

The IFCC ( Internet Fraud Complaint Center) has an excellent website that includes a tips page where you will read about Internet Auction Fraud, Non-Delivery of Merchandise, Credit Card Fraud, Investment Fraud, Nigerian Letter Scam, and Business Fraud.

In a perfect world, everyone would be honest and trustworthy, but, unfortunately, there are those who will try to take advantage of others. The Internet provides tremendous opportunity – like anything else, use it wisely.

The Google PR Toolbar is a simple tool you can download
and place on your browser. When you surf the web, this
toolbar will give you Google’s PR or Page Rank for that
particular site or page. Google ranks all web pages from
a scale of 0 to 10. This Toolbar is more like the Richter
scale than an ordinary scale, there’s a big difference in
the rankings as you go up and they are not proportional.

You must also realize each of these ranking points are
further divided and only Google knows the exact placement
of your site or page within your shown PR number. For
example, if you have a PR6 site your site could be at
low end of the PR6 scale (closer to PR5) or at the top end
which would make it more of a PR7 site. Big difference.

PageRank Confusion

Many suggest Google is not giving us the real value of
the page in the first place and this toolbar is often
out of date and more of a smokescreen than real information
about a site. There could be some truth in this as Google
never gives up all its secrets. Does any company?
Certainly not the company that holds the keys to the
most powerful economic force on the planet: the Internet.

Complicating matters even further are webmasters and
marketers who try to manipulate their own PageRank by
buying or exchanging links with other high PR sites.
Many are now doing Three-Way linking to try to influence
their site’s rankings in Google.

A whole SEO industry has been built up around PageRank
for the simple reason the stakes are extremely high. If
you can deliver first place rankings for your client’s
targeted keywords in Google it means free organic traffic
or visitors delivered directly to your site.

Many SEO experts believe Google has a whole list of
ranking factors which determine how well your page is
ranked. Among others, these ranking factors include
Google’s PageRank algorithm (voting system) and
Hypertext-Matching Analysis (analyzing page content).

Google’s Position

If you check out Google’s own corporate site for an
explanation you will find that Google clearly states
its patented PageRank™ algorithm is the heart of their
web ranking system which was founded by Larry Page &
Sergey Brin in 1998. You will also find that Google
says it uses numerous factors including PageRank to
examine the whole web and find the most relevant and
important pages to match a specific search.

PageRank takes into consideration over “500 million
variables and 2 billion terms” when finding the most
important pages. Google makes it clear that each page
casts a vote for another page and this is reflected in
the PageRank. Votes from particular sites or pages might
have greater value than others. “Important pages receive
a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search
results.”

The question still remains, is the Google PR Toolbar
a valid marketing tool? Should you use it?

One can only speak from experience, I have always used
the Google PR Toolbar and find it helpful in assessing
what Google thinks of a site or page. I rarely link out
to sites anymore but if I do I always check any potential
linking partners to see their PR. Any site with PR5 or
over I will link to it if that site is related and has
high rankings for my site’s own targeted keyword phrases.
I also check out the number of outbound links on that
page, lower is better because the amount of PR passed
along is divided equally with the other links.

Sometimes I will link to a lower PR3 or PR4 site if I
find the content on that site is extremely good and I
know it is only a matter of time before Google upgrades
that site to a PR5 or higher. You must be very careful
not to link out to any type of ‘link-farms’ as Google
will penalize you for it.

In my opinion, many SEO experts worry too much over the
exact PageRank or Value Google is giving to a page. Whether
or not we can really know the true value of any page? Well,
the true value of any web page is staring you in the face
in Google’s SERPs for if over time a page consistently holds
the #1 spot then that is Google’s true PageRank and Value
for that page for a particular keyword or keyword phrase.
If your page is consistently in the 1000th spot, then Google
doesn’t think your page has much value for that keyword.

Your site’s overall value or PageRank within the Google
ranking system may be a little harder to figure out if you
dismiss the PR Toolbar as a good indicator of your site’s
overall worth within Google. Maybe Google has put into place
filters and blinders to discourage the online marketers and
SEOs who try to abuse and manipulate PageRank.

Let Your Own Experiences Rule Your Judgement

Again, one can only speak from experience, I believe the
Toolbar is very helpful in showing what Google thinks of
your pages. Over the years, I have experienced my main
website at a PR1 level and I have experienced it at a PR6
level. Believe me, the PR6 is much better. Can’t imagine
what a PR8 site would be like to run or the kind of lifestyle
it would provide.

For higher PR means better rankings for your site and your
keyword phrases. It simply means more traffic and more
sales. If you’re optimizing for Google, you should do
everything you can to get the highest PR you can possibly
get. More importantly, you should be doing everything you
can to increase the PR of the pages where you have your
long-tail keyword phrases as organic traffic from these
pages will usually turn out to be your site’s main revenue
source.

I have found one of the quickest ways to raise your
Google PR is to get one-way links from high PR6, PR7
and PR8 sites (Think Article Marketing). Google
considers these links as votes for your site and ranks
your site or page accordingly. Consistently get enough
of these incoming one-way links over the long haul and
your PR will go up if you have high quality unique
content pages that are well optimized with good
navigation and formatting.

It will show you the PageRank of all internal and external
links on a webpage at once. Extremely helpful when you’re
checking out any site or page for at a glance you can see
the current Google PageRank of all these links.

Google’s PageRank system, including the PR Toolbar, is
something every webmaster and online marketer should be
aware of in their struggle for higher rankings. Don’t
become obsessed with it, instead use this system to your
advantage to build better pages and sites. For despite
all the misconceptions and intricacies of such a complex
system, no webmaster can deny if you conquer the Google
PagePank system, it will deliver the goods.

Firstly, let’s look at what the act does do. It makes it legal to send spam, but only in a specific way. It is illegal to send spam through virus infected or compromised machines - but then use of these things is illegal anyway. Spam must be sent from a valid e-mail address, and must provide a valid opt-out method.

Essentially what this means is that spammers can send anyone they want a mail and it is up to the recipient to opt-out of receiving more. Let’s apply this reasoning to other laws - I can rob you once, and if you would prefer I discontinued please send me a letter. I can rape you or kill you - please tell me if you would like me to stop and after this one time. Yes I realise I robbed you before - but that was a house burglary, this is a car burglary which you haven’t yet opted out of. This sort of thinking is obviously non-sensical. If spam is to be regulated against - as it is, and if it is an infringement of peoples rights - as it is, and if you want to stop it - as we do, then why would anyone consider such a farsical law would make any difference.

Spam is bulk unsolicited mail, but the CAN SPAM act has attempted to redefine it as bulk unsolicited mail from a hidden address without an opt out. This represents a serious lack of understanding of exactly what the problem is. If you can send the first spam legally, who is to say whether the second spam is a follow up, or a new legal first spamming? A domain name costs a few dollars, and comes with unlimited email addresses, even if someone does opt out of a spam email they will still likely be contacted by the same spammer, from a different address. In fact, this very policy is likely to give spammers confirmed lists of people who respond to spam!

One thing the CAN SPAM act does do well is allow ISP’s the right to handle spam as they see fit. This means that resources like the SPAMHAUS PBL can be used to block spam at it’s base.

One final point that is often overlooked is that while the USA has attempted to legislate spam, most countries have outright banned it. This means that the same email sent to a US address and, for instance, and english address can be both legal and illegal. Spammers claiming protection under the CAN SPAM act can only do so within the USA, and can still be prosecuted offshore.

When you have placed your large file image into your template it will expand the borders of your template and distort the proportions. That is ok, it is necessary to do so, this is a kind of tolerance that is needed when placing files. You need some give and take, otherwise you would never get the images into rows and columns because the ratio (proportion of width against height) would have to be perfectly measured out before you even placed an image!

Now that your template has been stretch out too far this is how you quickly and easily get it back in. At the bottom right hand corner of the image (not the template) move your mouse over it. A double arrow on an angel will appear indicating that you can size the image up or down, in this case you want to size it down. While holding down your Shift Key press down on the left mouse button and move the mouse straight to the left, you do not need to move it in an upper left angle across the image, since you have picked the double arrow that mode has been engaged and all you have to do is slide the mouse to the left or the right.

Now read carefully here. You have moved the mouse far to the left of the screen, now lift it and move the mouse over to the far right side of the screen and just near the bottom you will need to move the screen over to the left a bit to get the mouse to be off of the template and on to the white space to the right of the template. Move the bottom bar so that the screen is to the right and then touch the white space to the right of the template, immediately the image will snap into place for you.

If your image is still larger than the template repeat this step. If you see that the image is smaller than the template and you will know this because there is white space to the right of the image, just again, grab the lower right corner of the image, hold the “Shift Key” and you will see the angled arrows. Just move the arrows straight to the right and it will automatically fit the image in the template when you stretch it to the right side of the template space.

Markets. You have to know who your market is. Actually, on the internet, this is a bit more difficult than in an old-fashioned retail store or even a traditional mail-order business. On the internet, finding the right market for your goods is going to depend on some combination of keyword advertising, email list development and strategic use of blogs or similar sites.

Offers. Offers are exactly as important as in traditional marketing strategies. No offer, no sale. On the internet, you may only get one chance to elicit an action from a web site visitor before they exit your site or an email reader before they hit the DEL key. It’s your offer that will make the difference. A good internet marketing strategy is always testing and evaluating different offers to optimize their effectiveness.

Presentation. On the internet, presentation counts. Whether an offer is presented on a web site, adjacent to a blog article, in a banner ad, or in an email can make all the difference in the world. And it’s crowded out there! Your offer has to be visible amidst all the internet noise!

Measurement. Perhaps the most important attribute of an internet marketing strategy, however, is measurement. This is the principle benefit available from the internet that simply wasn’t available before – fast feedback. On the internet, you can quickly determine what works and what doesn’t, and then adjust your strategy accordingly.

When you create the specifics of your internet marketing strategy, make sure you can articulate, precisely, how you will address each and every one of the above four points.

Good questions. First, here’s why you should care.

Unlike getting website updates or ezines by email, RSS feeds give you absolute, 100% complete control over the situation.

You don’t have to reveal your email address. If you want to stop receiving content, you don’t have to request to be “taken off the list.”

One click, and poof… the subscription is gone.

Plus, since there’s no email address involved, there’s no way a publisher can sell, rent or give away the means to contact you.

That’s right… no more spam, viruses, phishing, or identity theft. And best of all, no reason to put yourself at the mercy of the publisher’s intentions.

You won’t need to suffer through the legalese in the privacy policy (if there is one) looking for loopholes that will send you deeper into inbox hell. No more setting up dummy Hotmail accounts “just in case.”

Again, if you don’t like the content, you can make it disappear as fast as you can change a TV channel. With just one click.

Pretty cool, huh?

That is cool! Umm… What the heck is RSS?

Alright! Now we’re ready to get to that part.

RSS is a simply an Internet technology standard that allows busy people to receive updates to web-based content of interest.

You might have figured that much out by now. But basically, that’s the essence of an RSS feed – you subscribe and then receive new content automatically in your feed reader.

What the heck is a feed reader?

You may already be using a form of feed reader, and not even realize it. If you use personalized home page services like My Yahoo or My MSN, you’ve got RSS capabilities built in. That’s how syndicated content like news, weather and stock quotes appears on your personal page. You can also add content from any blog or other site that uses RSS to provide updates.

Other web-based tools are primarily dedicated to feed reading only. One of the most popular web-based feed readers at this point is Bloglines, and it’s also free and easy to get started with.

If you use the Firefox browser, you can also receive RSS feeds from your tool bar by using the Live Bookmarks function. The next version of Internet Explorer will add this feature as well.

Finally, there are desktop-based feed readers. These function somewhat like an email program for feeds. Examples include Newsgator and Feed Demon.

If it sounds complicated, it’s really not. And things will get even easier when the next version of Outlook integrates feed-reading capabilities. So, you’ll have the same convenience that email subscriptions offered in the old days, without any of the terrible consequences of giving out your email address to potentially unscrupulous characters.

Sounds good. So how do I subscribe to a Feed?

First of all, look for the subscription or feed options (some bloggers make this difficult for some odd reason). You might see a variety of buttons (amusingly called chicklets).

If the site you want to subscribe to uses FeedBurner to aid in the subscription process (like many popular sites do), you’ll likely see the standard RSS icon, which takes you to a page that will give you an array of the most popular feed readers so you can select yours, and you’ll go from there. Just look around for an orange button and click on it.

Sometimes there will be a chicklet for your particular reader right on the blog that will take you to the appropriate subscription page. You may see buttons for My Yahoo, Google, Feedburner and Bloglines (among others).

Finally, you may also see little orange buttons that say XML or RSS. Often these chicklets will take you to a page that looks like code gibberish. In this case, you simply cut and paste the page URL from your browser window and manually paste it into your feed reader subscription box.

Hopefully this last method will soon disappear, never to be seen again.

In summary: RSS solves BIG problems.

So there you have it… RSS is being adopted at a phenomenal rate, because it’s a good thing for everyone.

The benefit to readers is obvious. And it’s good for publishers too, because we want to make sure that people feel comfortable subscribing, and that our message is not nuked by an overzealous spam filter.

Spend just a little bit of time getting familiar with feeds, and your online experience will get a lot better.

If you have already launched a Web site, you can add an affiliate program to whatever products or services you already offer online. You can also choose to start a site for the specific purpose of promoting the affiliate program or programs of your choice.

A variety of programs are available to site owners. An advantage of choosing to take the plunge into affiliate programs is that it helps you create more than one source of income from your Web site. You can be in the business of selling a product without having to concern yourself with the logistics of storing inventory, billing, or shipping.

While you may be tempted to choose the programs that offer the highest payout, keep in mind that if your customers don’t buy the product, you will not make any money. You would be much better advised to choose a product that is somehow related to what your Web site already offers your customers. That way you can tag team your product or service with the affiliate program you choose and have a greater opportunity to generate income.

When trying to decide which of the many affiliate programs to become associated with, here are some suggestions to keep in mind:

1. Be sure that the program you choose pays a minimum of at least 25% commission per sale. A variety of program that pay well that will complement many types of Web sites are available.

2. Find out whether you will be able to access information about the number of site visits and sales you have generated so you can track your progress.

3. The best programs offer several ways to advertise the program on your Web site. Consider those with banner ads, buttons, graphics, and text links.

4. Be clear about how often you will be paid and what payment method will be used.

5. Educate yourself about what type of assistance is available, should you need it. Do you contact the affiliate company by email, by filling out an online form, or do they provide a toll free number for support?

Once you get your affiliate program up and running, you have the potential of generating quite a handsome income. If you take the time to educate yourself well about the nature of affiliate marketing, you will greatly increase your chances of making this venture a great success.
