Stratumn, Platform as a service For Developers Enabling BlockChain Apps

A new platform-as-a-service Stratumn, designed for developers to build applications.

Stratumn is a Paris-based startup, a platform that allows applications to communicate with the bitcoin blockchain.

Users can build, deploy and run applications on the platform-as-a-service, where the resulted developed applications communicate with bitcoin blockchain. It is quite similar to the Heroku service.

The way the bitcoin blockchain works is by processing, on a distributed database where it is recorded all bitcoin transactions with an associated time-stamp. In its architecture it has a built-in open specification called Chainscript as JSON files that handle data. As a result, a user can then send the data to the blockchain with this method on the platorm. Later on the user can then retrieve and audit these packets of data by adhering to the Chainscript format.

There are many cases of developers building applications that were not necessarily related to bitcoin blockchain, but utilized the benefits of blockchain. As an example there is Stampery which has the capability to replace notaries. The service is designed with the capability to issue legally binding proofs for a user sensitive documents, with these proofs residing on the blockchain.

The innovation here by Stratumn is that, is offering users and their applications to communicate with the blockchain with little development complexity.

At the moment the biggest blockchain is the bitcoin’s blockchain, the opportunity here for Stratumn is that if it can build a blockchain-agnostic platform that works with private blockchains or alternative blockchains, then users can build applications with little development complexity on top of decentralized databases.

Google Improves Hybrid Cloud Security Offer, Partners with Splunk, BMC and Tenable

Following the offerings from competitors such as IBM, Cisco and Microsoft where they already offer their customers an expansion on their services for the enterprise market, with an option offering on hybrid cloud environments, it then follows that Google in order to improve its offerings, it has now partnered and is integrating with Splunk, BMC and Tenable.

As a result there is now more options on the Google Stackdriver, a platform that allows management of Information Technology operations between Google’s cloud platform, AWS, Azure among others, following the new partnerships by offering security and compliance.

Deepak Tiwari and Joe Corkery from Google Cloud stated “Integration with rich third-party ops solutions is important for customers, and we know that many of you are already using these tools to manage hybrid operations in private and public clouds”.

In terms of their third party partnerships, the offering from Splunk, allows Enterprise users to have insights onto GCP traffic, specifically covering Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), integrates via Google’s Pub/Sub messaging API for routing data between apps.

Regarding the BMC integration, users have the ability to manage all applications in one window, while also monitoring security and compliance. And the Tenable integration is focused on its SecurityCenter Continuous View product, in which GCP users can monitor what apps, devices and people are accessing your network or running on it. SecurityCenter Continuous View works across both on-premise and cloud environments.

One Card for All Your Credit Cards In One Place Only

Coin a device that wants to replace all of your credit cards with a single card, has an update, Coin 2.0.

The new updated version Coin 2.0 now uses NFC and is EMV compatible thus enabling users to just tap for payments with services such as Apple Pay, and now also integrating their chip-and-pin cards to the device.

The original Coin, debuted in November 2013 on Kickstarter, didn’t start shipping until November 2014 to early investors, and only regular orders being shipped in April 2015 in the US.

With this new version Coin 2.0, any card holder which has an EMV credit card can use the device for contactless payments, and the new version now also has feature improvements including an electronic stripe, a 2x faster display, a thinner card (by 8 percent), and the ability to give cards nicknames within the app.

Microsoft has announced the acquisition of GreenButton, a company that specializes in high-performance cloud-computing that uses Microsoft Azure for its operation.

The acquired business GreenButton provides its customers with a service requirement that permits large amounts of compute power and data processing in a wide range of fields such as science, engineering, media, finance, etc. by utilising cloud computing capabilities in their business model.

The company has custom developed a variety of integration processes with existing software products which are capable to offload their compute-intensive processing to the cloud. IBM Follows Trend and Creates Own Cloud Marketplace Hub

Following IBM Impact Conference, it was announced a new cloud marketplace hub, an central marketplace for IBM users of its cloud services and a new opportunity marketplace for third-party solution partners.

Over the last several years, IBM has been putting together a portfolio of cloud services from Softlayer for infrastructure, BlueMix for development and more than 100 cloud-based software services including recent purchases of Silverpop and Cloudant.

IBM's Steve Robinson stated that this new marketplace goal is to offer and bring most of its offerings together and offer new opportunities to partners “Many clients have been asking for a consistent way to explore what IBM has and ways to discuss [and understand] a fuller spectrum of what’s available”. The new marketplace follows the trend of other established consumer marketplaces such as the Apple store and google play approach in its offer to users to experience and consume software at a popular central hub approach. In this case, this new marketplace is more in line with that of Salesforce App Exchange.

IBM is inviting companies who have built apps on BlueMix or are running apps on SoftLayer to put their products into the marketplace.

Twitter Enhances Security on Its Data Encryption Service Keys

Google Cloud Storage New Features Region and Lifecycle Management

It was announced today by Google, three new features to its Google Cloud Storage service, however its Cloud Storage SLA does not yet apply.

Following these updates the Google Cloud Storage service is becoming a competitive service offering comparable to Amazon’s Web Services on the S3 option, furthermore competitive with Microsoft Azure Storage.

The new updates include Object Lifecycle Management, capability to users choose in which region their files and data will be stored. It was also announced that users will have a capability to upload their files faster via Gsutil 3.4, incorporating an upload processing in a parallel structure. Microsoft and Oracle to Announce Partnership on Big Data Services

It appears that from Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer arrangements with its Azure chief Satya Nadella including Oracle president Mark Hurd it has been announced a joint press conference this Monday.

The press conference is scheduled only two days before Microsoft’s Build developer conference in San Francisco. This event comes in a context where the Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is committed on a series of major partnerships deals, which also includes one with Salesforce.

Larry Ellison stated “Next week we will be announcing technology partnerships with the largest and most important SaaS companies (software-as-a-service) and infrastructure companies in the cloud” as seen on Oracle to announce partnerships.

Oracle Larry Ellison stated that companies will use their infrastructure for years to come, where its new technology is similar to that of SAP HANA.

In a strategic sense it seems that Microsoft and Oracle are planning a big data initiative in order to compete with Pivotal as seen on here and GE. It may even be possible that in the medium term a new company may even emerge following this initiative.

With these developments in minds it also follows that SAP already works closely with Amazon Web Services.

Google Cloud Platform Now Available to Everyone Including Businesses

It was announced by Google today at I/O that its Google Cloud Platform is now available to everyone.

Currently the service, has around 3 million users but now it can be envisaged that businesses will make use of this new general availability and will certainly be a strong competitor with its services when compared to the popular Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the emerging Microsoft Windows Azure.

The main features on the Google cloud platform announced are:

Sub-hour billing charges for instances in one-minute increments with a 10-minute minimum, as a result developers only pay for compute minutes that they use.
Shared-core instances provide smaller instance shapes for low-intensity workloads.
Advanced Routing features help create gateways and VPN servers and enables developers to build applications that span local network and Google’s cloud.
Large persistent disks support up to 10 terabytes per volume.

Google is using its attractive existing data-center infrastructure in order to attract developers and businesses. Where software app developers can benefit from APIs that allow them to integrate with apps with the usage of data centers for compute and storage development.

BlackBerry Enterprise Messaging Platform New Features for Users

Today there is a new update on BlackBerry Enterprise IM 3.0, where users of BlackBerry 10 now have new messaging capabilities. The new features include integration with third-party services, such as Microsoft Lync, Office Communication Server and IBM Lotus Sametime.

Google Cloud Notification Messaging Service Now Available on Chrome

Following 2012's announcement at Google I/0 on the availability for cloud push notification messaging service designed for Android. It now follows that this week, this service is now also available to Chrome and Chrome OS.

As a result, software cloud app developers can now create Chrome apps with the capabilities built-in that allows developers to wake up their apps remotely or with a combination of either sending simultaneously notification messages directly to their all cloud app end users from a central server.

Zoho New Business Card Details Scans Data Directly to CRM

The cloud based Zoho platform made available to its users a new mobile phone app on iTunes and Google Play that works by scanning business cards on the go, after which the input data is directly published to a user's Zoho CRM which can be either as a new contact or to update an existing contact.

The process as stated by Zoho's Raju Vegesna is done by synchronizing the scanned data to the user's CRM utilizing a background service. Furthermore, if the scanned data contains a Twitter handle, then it automatically assigns on the Zoho CRM contact details its Twitter account. Oracle Acquires Nimbula to Create a Similar Amazon Web Services?

We understand that Oracle is acquiring Nimbula, this is a cloud OS start-up created by some founding people of the popular cloud service that is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

It appears that this latest development by Oracle is not an attempt to directly participate on OpenStack, rather a talent acquisition and the technology share, nevertheless Nimbula is a member current member of the OpenStack Foundation.

As a result, Oracle will become an OpenStack interested party despite not being a direct member. The growing interest and current members include VMware via Nicira, HP, Dell and IBM.

In an overall strategy it can be envisaged that Oracle has an interest for the Nimbula technology in a context where the Amazon EC2 offers and has an ever increasing market share on cloud computing solutions. It may be that Oracle is positioning itself in a technology market segment where it feels it may be able offer similar and better solutions following on the current success of Amazon's vision and implementation.

Amazon Web Services Price Cuts on Messaging and Notification Services

The Amazon Web Services now has cheaper pricing particularly on the messaging and notification services, relevant to application developers and are being applied from today to users.

The cheaper services are the Amazon Simple Queue Services (SQS) and the Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) which were first introduced back in 2010. The new prices are summarized below.

SQS API $0.50 per million API requests.
SNS API $0.50 per million API requests.
The SQS and SNS free tiers are to expand to 1 million free API requests per month.

Rackspace Cloud Lowers Its Prices to Compete with Amazon

Rackspace announced that has cut its prices by 33 percent for its cloud bandwidth and content delivery network service. The new pricing also applies for installed tiers on the Cloud Files storage. Further details can be read on the Rackspace blog.

The Rackspace basic pricing is set and works from plans of Cloud Files. The prices range from 10 cents per GB per month for the first 1TB, furthermore depending on usage it then falls to 7 cents per GB per month. It is also available specific pricing that include volume discounts reserved on large storage accounts.

In this context, Rackspace is following on the AWS and the lead from Jeff Bezos.
