Now the company behind the iconic ‘Eddie Stobart’ brand was in dire straights when Andrew and his partner, William Stobart, bought the business in February 2004. You’ve probably not heard of John and his team at PDS Engineering - they’re not one of the North West’s best known brands or household names, but in the specialised world of high-tech engineering, they’re serious players that have customers like NASA knocking on their doors.

In this interview, John outlines how his team worked on Richard Noble’s Thrust SSC (Supersonic Car) project which broke the land speed record and sound barrier, reaching 766 mph at Black Rock in the Nevada desert. They also assisted Richard Branson in his attempts to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon and most recently were part of the team that renovated Donald Campbell’s Bluebird.

My first interview is with Ed Gibson - Chief Security Advisor at Microsoft UK. • A business must have unity and clarity of purpose and it is essential that leaders communicate a compelling and inspirational vision that can be clearly understood by every single employee in the organisation
• Don’t be scared of the emotional side of management - logic is important, but don’t forget that very often it’s emotion that makes things happen. Great managers recognise that it’s not only minds that you need to convince, it’s also about hearts
• There should be a balance between what you do in your day job and what you do in your life - good managers, reflect and model that for their staff
