Gestion; ABI/INFORM Global

In many family businesses, the founders are trying to perpetuate their legacy and ensure continued family control through intergenerational succession, passing the baton to their children. Unfortunately, recent studies show that “only 30% of family businesses survive beyond the first generation” and that several intergenerational successions fail shortly after the second generation has taken over. This is a serious blow not only to family businesses and their employees, but also the health of the economy. Therefore the failure of intergenerational succession is a challenge that deserves to be studied.

Taking advantage of the consultations related to Canada and Quebec pre-budgets and the development of the Quebec entrepreneurship strategy (Stratégie québécoise de l’entrepreneuriat), Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton is releasing a report entitled Business Transfers: Problems and Suggested Solutions. The report, which was sent to the Quebec and federal Ministers of Finance, raises a significant tax concern regarding business transfers and proposes innovative solutions that would support family succession.

Business succession: vital to our economic success

Jean Robillard, President and CEO, stated, “If there is one necessary condition to Quebec and Canada’s economic success, it would be the competitiveness of our businesses. To support and encourage this competitiveness, we must ensure the prosperity of our business successors. This has, unfortunately, not been the case, because of tax provisions that do not favour business transfers to family members.

Bean, The New York Times, and IKEA – to reveal their unconventional success strategies and how these strategies can be adopted by and applied to any organization.Miller and Le Breton-Miller show how four driving passions of family-run firms – command, continuity, community, and connection – give rise to a set of practices that defy modern management thinking yet ensure a company’s long-term competitive advantage.
By JEAN GAUTHIER AND SUZANNE LANDRY, The Gazette · Tuesday, February 8, 2011

According to the Quebec government, about 55,000 Quebec business owners will have retired by 2018, resulting in an actual decline of 25,200 entrepreneurs. If we take into consideration the arrival of new entrepreneurs between 2008 and 2018, this figure represents more than half the decrease in entrepreneurs in all of Canada (-45,200). The situation is particularly alarming for 30-to 44-year-olds because only 3,000 Quebec entrepreneurs will be new business owners by 2018, which is 10 times fewer than in Ontario.
