Finding a company SWOT analysis

An independent analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) for a company can greatly enhance your understanding of an organisation. You can find SWOT analyses by using the following Library databases:

Business Source Complete

Choose ‘Company Information’ at the top of the home page, enter the name of a company in the search box and click on ‘Search’. Select a company by clicking on the name to display the basic company record. If a SWOT analysis is available there will be a link under ‘Related Information’ on the left hand side of the screen. From the list of results click on ‘PDF Full Text’ to open a report and check the table of contents to find the SWOT data.

Thomson One Banker

On the home page click on ‘Research’, under ‘Company Analysis’ in the left hand menu, then ‘Conduct Research Report Search’, which takes you to Thomson Research.
Enter the name of a company in the search box or click on the company look up symbol (enter company name, click on ‘Find Matches’, select a company and click on ‘Include Selected’). In the text box below enter the word ‘swot’. You can also change the ‘Report Date’ setting in the box on the right hand side of the screen (it defaults to 90 days). Check your search criteria in the box at the bottom of the screen and click on ‘Search’.
Select a report from the displayed list and click on ‘View’. You can then check the contents to find the SWOT data.
Please note there is an extensive range of reports on Thomson One Banker, and the Datamonitor Reports are more detailed than those found on Business Source Complete.

Business Source Complete on your smartphone or ipad

EBSCOhost covers a number of indexes and full-text databases, including Business Source Complete. Mobile access is either via a mobile website or you can download free apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad and Android.

Apple and Android users should go to the EBSCOhost Database list screen, click on the link to enter Business Source Complete, scroll to the foot of the screen and click on the link to the EBSCOhost iPhone and Android Applications. You can then enter your Brookes email address to receive instructions, an activation key and a link to the App Store.

Please note, if you are off-campus or not connected to the Brookes network you should log into Athens before trying to access any content on BSC. You may log into Athens here.

Orbis database increases coverage and adds patents

The Library’s international companies database, Orbis, now covers over 1.3 million companies worldwide.

Over 107,000 companies also have patent information provided by the European Patent Office. You can search by date, number of patents and keywords from the title or abstract of a patent.

Did you know that you can also set up an alert to notify you of a specific change in a company’s status, for example bankruptcy or liquidation? Click on the ‘Alerts’ tab in Orbis to find out more.

Going for a job interview?

Be prepared for that vital interview by using the Library databases to give you background information on a company’s financial performance, the issues they are facing in their industry, their main competitors and the latest news on their activities.

Business Source Complete can be used to find academic and trade press articles on a company. Also, look for profiles on major international companies by following the Company Profiles link on the ‘More’ tab at the top of the screen.

Use Factiva to find stories in the daily and trade press as well as webnews services and blogs. Factiva includes the Financial Times and has very good coverage of local news sources.

Fame and Orbis cover accounts for major UK and international companies, often for up to 10 years. You can compare the performance of one company against their competitors or sector.

Thomson One Banker also provides company accounts but is especially useful for analyst/broker reports on companies. Enter a company name in the search box and click on ‘Research Reports’.

Finally, try searching for UK companies on the Mintel market research database. In addition to industry background, including SWOT analysis, you will also find news on product innovations and advertising campaigns. You can also use Euromonitor passport GMID to search for both UK and international companies.

Thomson One Banker Q&A Sessions

Need help with using the Thomson One Banker database for company research? Thomson Reuters are running Q&A sessions on Monday 14 May at 15.30, and Thursday 31 May at 15.00, which will last for 1 hour.

Database focus: Zetoc

Need to keep up-to-date with new research in your field(s) of interest? Have a look at Zetoc, a research database produced by the British Library and Mimas. Zetoc gives you access to over 28,000 journals and 45 million article citations and conference papers, covering a wide range of academic disciplines.

Records date back to 1993 and the database is updated daily. Keeping up-to-date is easy by setting up email Zetoc alerts or RSS feeds. Although not full text, Zetoc has ‘LinkSource’ links which connect users to any full text articles available on other Brookes Library databases, such as Business Source Complete.
