Figures released last month (March 2012) show that the PPI misselling scandal which has rocked several leading banks is not going away in a hurry. More and more customers are looking into banks (and other finance companies) conduct to see if they could be entitled to claim back any money they spent on Payment Insurance Protection.

The single most complained about bank was Barclays, although Lloyds TSB as a group received the most complaints overall.

Alarmingly the first six months of 2011 saw an already record high number of complaints, driven largely by the PPI scandal. However, worringly for the banks this increased exponentially in the latter half of the year, with some banks receiving almost a quarter of a million complaints!

So, if you bought Payment Protection Insurance in the last few years, it could well be worth investigating whether you were treated fairly, or fell foul of some of the dubious practices that sellers employed to foist these policies on an unsuspecting and trusting public.

What To Do If You Think You Were Missold PPI

The very first thing you need to do is get organised. Get all the paperwork together from your finance agreement, including the original contract and the original terms and conditions. If you don’t have this to hand, you can write to the bank and ask that they send through the paperwork including the terms and conditions that were relevant at the time you took out the agreement.

Banks can legitimately charge £1.00 for the privilege of sending this documentation through, so it may be an idea to include a cheque for this amount with your claim to avoid any delays to the process.

They will act indepently and impartially and decide if you have are due compensation. They take longer than the bank itself, but with some of the money being paid out, it is well worth having some patience and awaiting their verdict.

So, how do you know if you were missold PPI?

There are a number of different factors.

If your policy offers cover against unemployment, and you were unemployed at the time, you could well have a claim. The same goes for it you were self-employed or retired. If the seller failed to ask about your status or encouraged you to take the policy out anyway, you should definitely pursue compensation.

Similarly, if your PPI excludes existing medical complaints, and this was not explained to you at the point you took out the policy, you should consider ask for compensation. Also, several policies do not cover for common ailments such as stress of back pain – if this was not disclosed to you, make a claim.

There are several broader complaints you can employ to get your money back. Did you feel pressured by the sales person? Did they forget to explain the cooling off period? Did they imply that you would be more likely to get the finance if you took our PPI cover? All of these are strictly against the lenders code of conduct, so you should consider making a claim.

For the first time in its history, the World Bank will hold elections in order to decide who will be the next head of one of the most influential institutions in the world. Jose Antonio Ocampo, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Kim Yong Jim are the three candidates running for the post at the World Bank, each one backed by different countries and each one with fairly different ideas about how the World Bank should be run following their election.

Let’s start with the candidate that is most likely to win the elections, as backed by both the US, which hold the most votes, and Europe: Jim Yong Kim. President of Dartmouth College, the 52 year old professor was born in Seoul but moved to the US at the age of 5 where he has been living ever since and where he has managed to obtain a medical doctorate and then a PhD at Harvard. He has also covered the director position at the department of HIV/Aids at the World Health Organization for several years. Barack Obama’s move, nominating Jim Yong Kim as the ideal candidate for the job vacancy, has surpised many as the Ivy League professor did not seem to be the most known candidate for such an important role.

Jose Antonio Ocampo is a professor at Columbia University with a great degree of experience in various international organisations. The life of this self-determined lady has been described as happy and magical until the Biafran war broke out, causing her family to lose everything, being forced to run away. Surely she has much more to say about her life than any other candidate, having experienced the war during her childhood which has taught her a lot about life and how to live happily with simple things. Without a doubt, she might represent a change in the culture of an international institution which has historically been US-centric but that could see a major change in the way things are done, giving the chance to third world countries to make their voices heard.
