Why all of the changes to Facebook? I believe they truly feel they are offering a better product, but, if you look closely, it is the same content just all moved around and with different portions of real estate on the page. Yes, some of the sharing and photo stuff seems to have different sharing/ saving features that are more limited, but I have not seen it personally, my pictures go on my website, only a few actually get posted to YouTube, but that is me.

From what I have seen in the past, people just hate change! It means learning something new, a different way of doing the same thing, so, why bother? Right?

My opinion is that along with the new features, none that I like yet, comes that newness, Facebook is going public, they need a big splash!

The only thing I have seen different is the big picture at the top and messages now on the fan (business) pages, other than that, it is as I said before, rearranged real estate and priorities, that’s it. I have a feeling that once 100% implemented, more will come, it is like a warm-up for the big stuff. Who knows? Anyway, if you use Facebook now, you will in the future, it’s not that big of a deal.

Technically speaking, a website is made up of web-pages, each of which may have sub-pages, and those in turn may also have sub-pages, and each and every one can be indexed by the content hungry search engines. Now that the basics are covered, what is a website, other than web-pages? A website is, or should be, a representation of you or your business, whichever case applies, and this means a lot more than pages, it means attitude, image, action, feelings, information, and the list goes on….

Website Attitude

How do you express attitude of a website? Think about this carefully, what is the attitude of your business? Is your business about helping, supporting, serving, or do you just want a wham bam thank-you-mam sale? Here is where what works, and what should be will in some cases differ, because for many, if not most website businesses, the first thing they want is your email address! These types will have a pop-up style landing page that informs you to sign up now so that you don’t miss out on whatever it is they are selling, is that the attitude of your business? If so, stop reading now, I can’t help you because service and support are what this article is about.

Website Image

Yes, attitude is a part of the image, but taken to the next level, attitude in this case is the reality, image is the perception, and perception is powerful, but, perception can be misleading. Have you ever gotten an email offering to solve all of your problems, then, in reality it was just a rip-off? You percieved that email to be helpful, but it wasn’t, and what you are left with is the image, the image that whoever sent this to you is a crook, see where this is headed? A website gets it’s image from it’s attitude and it’s actions.

Website Actions

When you think of your business, what does it do? What action does a customer get? If you are a plumber, and you have a plumbing website, why would someone go to your site? Obviously, they can’t click the mouse and have their pipes stop leaking instantly, but, they can see what your attitude is, is your site simply a name address and phone number, maybe with your regular office hours and a picture of you and your truck, or, does your website offer some sort of interaction? Is there a place where other, happy and maybe not so happly customers have left a comment? Is there detailed info on what they should do first, like cut-off the water, turn off the hot-water heater, or whatever applies? Can you help them, without getting paid? This is important, very sldom is a plumber going to leave his kid’s ball-game to run to your house in time to stop a flood, but maybe, just maybe, having a tip or two in an article about “what to do if” could help them, and then, they can call to set an appointment, either a right-now emergency, or, Monday afternoon, whatever is best for them, and that is the key, what action can your website do, for them? Once a customer gets help from your friendly and informative website, what kind of image will they have of you?

Why do I need a website?

This question may have already been answered, but, let me go a bit deeper. Imagine back in the old west days, back when the railroad, stage-coach and pony express were high tech, what happened when the telegraph came along, the telephone, television and then cell phones and pagers? Well, the Internet is today’s best tool, after all, compare email to the pony express, heck, even the US Post Office of today can’t compete with email!

Some things grow in importance, could you imagine life without all of our modern goodies? Ok, sometimes, but most of the time, no way! Today we have Smart Phones, cell phones now allow you to use the internet, even TV’s have this option. No, not everyone has a smart phone, the internet, or whatever, but these folks are not excluded when you have a website, but think of all of the potential customers that are excluded when you don’t!

I know that there are tons of new features, but where are they? I have been playing with WP 3.0 since it was available for any kind of testing, using the WordPress Beta Tester plugin, set to the “cutting edge” option, and yes, I am aware of the new “menu” feature, but, I am not sure how this is helpful, If a special menu is needed, I build it. I understand that it now works for unlimited sites, I guess this is a BuddyPress or WPMU thing, it does nothing for me, I only have like 30 sites!  Oh, the now bolder “ENTER TITLE HERE” line when adding a new page or post is kinda neat, if you didn’t know where to put the title before because it was a bit hard to see, the white areas just blended in and new users had a tough time, so, this is a plus, but, where are all of the new goodies?

Ok, I am being a bit sarcastic here, yes, there are too many new things for me to list, but, most are not readily visible to the naked eye, these are the things that will help theme and plugin developers to add even more goodies, that can be seen, so, if you are new to WordPress, hang on to your shorts, this is going to get good! Watch the video, or read more here. Just so you can get a grasp on how fast the download process started, I just happened to be upgrading a plugin, and saw that 3.0 was available, when I looked to see how many had downloaded it, it was at only about 10,000, I got this screen-shot about 30 minutes later!

This video is fantastic, from WordCamp San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg is really a funny guy, the story of WordPress and the whole 3.0 release is very interesting too.

Looking at the picture, you notice that there really isn’t much difference between the figures, but, the yellow one with it’s hand up saying here I am, does your business do that? What Brand have you created for your business? Think os the branding of something we all know, McDonalds, when you see those arches you immediately know ehat it is. When people can associate an image with the business, it sticks and they can remember it.

When you are creating an image for your business, it needs to be something that is simple and carries through all of your marketing and advertising efforts, be it an ad, a business card, or a website, branding your business is very important and helps your advertising work better for you.

Always remember, a potential customer must see your ad a minimum of seven times, before they will remember it, and, that is if, you have created an effective brand, if you don’t stand out, they may never notice it!
