Today I'm sharing mockups of the newly released Playful Panels quilt pattern! This is a eye-catching pattern written for preprinted panel squares but also includes instructions for using a focus fabric instead of preprinted squares.

Below are current fabric collections that have panel squares in the sizes needed for Playful Panels. You'll love that the pattern is written for any size of square from 8.5" to 10.5", with instructions on how to upsize the squares to the size needed to fit into the quilt top.

Playful Panels Large Throw Christmas Quilt in Claus & Co!

I have another Playful Panels quilt to share with you today! This one is made with Christmas themed fabric and is the Large Throw size.

This stunning quilt pattern includes 7 sizes and uses jelly rolls or fat quarters for the small squares, along with preprinted panel squares or yardage of a focus print, or even pieced blocks! The pattern includes instructions on upsizing the squares, so it will work for a wider range of panel squares.

Perfect for Preprinted Panel Squares!

As a quilt pattern designer, I am constantly looking at upcoming fabric collections to see what works in my existing patterns, as well as patterns that exist only in my head or on my computer. There are a lot of fabric collections that include a preprinted panel with squares, especially in White Owl Textiles and Clothworks collections, and I saw the need for a pattern to pair with these collections, and thus, Playful Panels was designed!

Playful Panels is written specifically for panel squares measuring 8.5" to 10.5", with 10.5" the goal size for the squares. Squares smaller than 10.5" are upsized with sashing to 10.5" so they fit into the blocks and the quilt top. A preprinted panel usually has some leeway for trimming around the squares, so if your panel has 11" squares, you may be able to trim them down to 10.5", remembering that the outside 1/4" will be taken up with the seam allowance on all four sides.

This quilt was made following the upsizing instructions included in the Playful Panels pattern. The preprinted panel squares in this quilt were less than 10.5" square, so sashing was added to the squares to bring them up to size.

Fall is here, the leaves are beginning to change, and the wind is rippling across the pond. The corn fields surrounding our home are being harvested this week!

Sweet Christmas Fabric Collection!

This fabric collection is Claus & Co by Melissa Mortenson for Riley Blake Designs, using the panel, half of a jelly roll, and the awesome diagonal stripe for the binding, along with Confetti Cotton Bright White by Riley Blake Designs. The collection is a fun mix prints with Santa and Mrs. Claus, gingerbread houses, reindeer, mistletoe, family pictures, snowflakes and stripes in red, green, aqua (or is it mint green?), pale pink, and white. I left out the very light prints and the gingerbread house prints.

The quilt pictured in this blog post is the Large Throw size which I made with one Claus & Co panel and half of a jelly roll. I plan to use the leftover rows of stockings and jelly roll strips to make two smaller quilts, probably a quilt to hang from the fireplace mantle! I think that will be a sweet addition to our Christmas decor!

Refer to the Quilt Stats chart below to see what you'll need to make your quilt. The Claus & Co panel yields 12 squares which will make the Twin size. Add in a 2-1/2" rolie polie, background, and binding, and you're all set!

All the Quilt Sizes - Seven in All!

Playful Panels includes three Throw sizes - Small, Medium, and Large - so it's easy for you to make the Throw size quilt you're after without doing any math. I am very happy that this pattern worked for the Twin size, as well as a Square Queen, Rectangular Queen, and King. The finished quilt measurements are as follows:

Small Throw 50" x 50"

Medium Throw 50" x 70"

Large Throw 70" x 70" (a great size for snuggling on the couch!)

Twin 70" x 90"

Square Queen 94" x 94"

Rectangle Queen 94" x 114"

King 110" x 110"

Options for Block Centers

Preprinted Panel Squares

Playful Panels is written to accommodate preprinted panel squares measuring 8.5" up to 10.5" square, using sashing to upsize the smaller squares. Additional sashing yardage is included as an option in the Sashing row of the Quilt Stats chart. If your squares are already at 10.5", you won't need the extra sashing to upsize them, so you'd use the first value in the Sashing row.

A Focus Fabric

Also included is the option of using yardage for the block centers instead of a preprinted panel squares. This would typically be a large focus print with lots of detail. You would follow the Yardage option under the Panel Squares row.

Pieced Blocks

Another option for the block centers is placing a pieced quilt block there. Pieced quilt block instructions are NOT included in the pattern. However, finding 10.5" square quilt blocks isn't too hard. Maybe at some point I will design some for you. :)

Precut Friendly for the Small Squares

The small squares in the quilt top are made with either jelly roll strips or fat quarters, and both options are included in the Fabric Requirement chart. The use of Fat Quarters is limited to the Bed size quilts, and FQs are not an option for the Throw size quilts. This is to ensure that there is enough variety of prints in each Throw quilt size. Having a sufficient variety of prints helps ensure that the same print isn't placed next to itself in the blocks and border. Plus, it ends up looking like a happy scrappy quilt with lots of prints!

Strip Piecing for the Win!

You know how much I love strip piecing which speeds up the process and results in more accurate piecing (for me anyway!) The strips of small squares in the Playful Panels pattern are strip pieced, and you wont' be sewing together individual squares! I've figured out all of the math for how many strips are in the strip sets and how to piece the cut segments to create the block and border designs.

Perfect for Confident Beginner Quilters

This pattern is rated Confident Beginner which means you have made a few quilts, you know how to read and follow a quilt pattern, you know how to cut fabric with a rotary cutter, you know how to press seams, and you've gotten good at an accurate 1/4" seam allowance (this is the key to becoming a proficient quilter!)

I've been wanting to write a pattern for preprinted panels for a long time, and I'm delighted to be able to announce that the time has finally come! Meet Playful Panels!

Preprinted Panel Squares for the Win!

As a quilt pattern designer, I am constantly looking at upcoming fabric collections to see what works in my existing patterns, as well as patterns that exist only in my head or on my computer. Fall is here, the leaves are beginning to turn orange and fall, the wind gently blows across the pond. The corn and soybean fields surrounding our home are being harvested this week!

Oh, Those Sweet Floral Fabrics!

This amazing collection is perfect for the Playful Panels quilt pattern. It's called Garden Fresh by Sue Zipkin for Clothworks. The preprinted panel includes 8 squares of beautiful flowers in a variety of vases. The squares are the perfect size for this pattern, without being upsized to fit.

I used a FQ bundle and cut strips for the strip pieced sections. The background is Confetti Cotton Cloud by Riley Blake Designs, which is a little bit lighter than the background of the preprinted panel squares. I didn't want to go any darker/yellower with the background solid because some of the prints in the collection have white in their background, not off white or cream, so I did a happy compromise of Cloud, versus bright white or ivory.

I was tempted to leave out the mottled prints that read as solid in blue, teal, and peach in the collection, but I am glad included them because they add a sparkle to the quilt that wouldn't be there without them. I left out the bright green one as it seemed too different than the rest of the fabrics to include it.

The Garden Fresh fabric collection is very hard to find and virtually sold out. You will find a similar newer collection, Fleur De Rose, by the same designer, Sue Zipkin, right here on Etsy. Unfortunately, this collection doesn't have preprinted panel squares.

Today is a day of Gratitude! I'm sharing a brand new quilt pattern with you named Gratitude! This pattern is jelly roll and scrap friendly, includes 8 sizes, and is the 4th quilt in the Donation Quilt Series. It is a quick and easy quilt pattern with strip piecing and simple sewing.

Once again, you're gonna love that I have done all of the math for you with the 8 sizes that are included. This pattern includes 3 Throw sizes - labeled Lap, Small Throw, and Throw. It also includes 2 Queen sizes to give you the option of making a Square Queen if you don't want a pillow tuck, or a Rectangular Queen with extra length for a pillow tuck. I am all about giving you options here!

Jelly Rolls For Strip Piecing

Previously this year, I wrote the Primrose quilt pattern which is jelly roll friendly, and prior to that it had been quilt awhile since I wrote a jelly roll pattern. I figured it was definitely time to write one to use some of the sweet rolie polies I've had stashed away. A Rolie Polie is a Riley Blake Designs' term for a jelly roll.

You can view all of my 2-1/2" jelly roll strip patterns right here in the shop.

This pattern is written to strip piece the 2-1/2" strips into strip sets and then subcut them into segments. Okay, I heard you saying that three times really fast! The segments are then sewn into the blocks with sashing. Strip piecing speeds up this process, and it seems to make it more accurate since both ends of the segment are cut straight.

A Truly Scrappy Quilt Pattern

Gratitude is what I would call a Truly Scrappy Pattern. You can use any width of strip less than 3", not just 2-1/2" wide scraps, making this the perfect pattern to use your scrap bins. There is a whole section on using your scraps in a variety of strip widths from 1" up to 3". That is the width, and the minimum strip length is 5-1/2".

Honestly, I almost cut the entire Scrappy section out of the pattern because I wasn't sure it really added to the pattern, but The Mister said it adds value to the pattern, so include it. I am glad I did, and if you are a scrappy quilter and will use that section, you can thank The Mister!

Wanderlust Fabrics!

This sweet yet bold fabric collection is Wanderlust by Boundless Fabrics, and I love it! It's a beautiful collection of large and small florals, feathers, bow and arrows, and geometric prints in navy, shades of peach, mint green, gray and creamy white. A really pretty grouping of fabrics, that's for sure!

This fabric is from way back when Craftsy produced Boundless fabrics, and I have been hoarding this fabric in my stash for just the right project. The bundle followed us cross-country when we moved from Washington State to Ohio in 2023. I used fat quarters for the blocks, cutting them into (7) 2-1/2" x 21 strips each. Isn't that bold, large navy floral print in the Outer Border just so pretty!?! The background is a Confetti Cotton Bright White, but really should have been Cloud. The lighting played tricks on me when I was selecting the background.

The Backing and Binding are also prints from the Wanderlust collection.

Longarm Machine Quilting

The digital longarm design used to quilt the quilt top, batting, and backing together is Simple Simon. Quilted on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher in white thread.

This quilt was professionally pieced, quilted and bound by me.

Batting is Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton poly.

The Backing fabric is mint green with with large white flowers, a print from the Wanderlust fabric collection.

Oh, Those Sweet Fabrics!

The Berry Basket fabric collection by April Rosenthal for Moda Fabrics, and I love it! It's a beautiful collection of large and small florals, berries, plaids, and ditty prints in blueberry navy, cranberry red, aqua, pinks, and creamy white. A real show-stopper grouping of fabrics, that's for sure!

This fabric is from 2023, and I have been hoarding this fabric in my stash for quite some time. The fabric is available right here on Etsy. I used a 2-1/2" jelly roll for the blocks, Tiny Flowers in Blueberry 24152-14 for the Outer Border, and Daisy Dot in Cranberry 24153-12 for the Binding. The background is a Confetti Cotton Bright White, but really should have been Cloud. The lighting played tricks on me when I was selecting the background, but hey, there's no reason to stress about it!

While the Berry Basket fabric is getting harder to find, other Moda fabric designers often use this same aesthetic in their collections; designers such as Camille Roskelley of Thimbleblossoms (formerly of Bonnie and Camille), April Rosenthal, Corey Yoder, Fig Tree & Co, Lella Boutique, Sherri and Chelsi, and others.

Moda fabric collections usually include a lot of prints (30-40), which is really great for easily making a scrappy-looking quilt while using just a single collection where all of the fabrics already coordinate.

Journey Baby Quilt in a Dreamy Rainbow!

Today I'm sharing a rainbow Journey baby quilt that I made in early 2025 and never posted here on the blog. 😲 Sometimes it just happens! I discovered the quilt hadn't been posted when I went to look for the post while preparing for the 2026 Fall Quilt Sale which is coming very, very soon.

Journey is an easy fat quarter friendly quilt pattern that includes all of the quilt sizes and goes together quickly and easily with large pieces. This is the second quilt in the Donation Quilt Series which features quilts that are quick and easy to sew with large pieces, which makes them great quilts to give to those in need.

Journey Quilt Pattern Features

Includes 9 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Large Throw Twin, Full, Square Queen, Rectangular Queen, and King

Fat Quarter or 1/4-yard friendly

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

Not recommended for directional prints unless you know how to sew HSTs with them

This quilt is the Baby size which measures approximately 42" x 48". That's perfect for a crib quilt, a tummy time floor mat, or a quilt for a toddler to drag around and love on.

A Rainbow of Beautiful Fabrics

This quilt is made with Dream by Kristy Lea of Quiet Play for Riley Blake Designs. This is just a few prints from the collection, as the Baby size requires just 7 fat quarters. Most of the fabrics are tone-on-tone and read as a single color but also includes some beautiful rainbow prints.

The Accent fabric is a scattered white dot print on bold black which pairs perfectly with the bold rainbow colors. The binding is also made with this black dotted fabric.

Backing is a leftover piece of Widescreen in Black, a wide backing by Robert Kaufman. The modern vibe blends in with the modern quilt top.

Longarm Machine Quilting

The longarm digital quilting design used on this Journey quilt is Rainbow Hearts by Keryn Emmerson, available at Intelligent Quilting. It's a beautiful mix of rainbow arcs over a sweet heart. Quilting was done on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher in black Superior Omni thread.

A Note About the Border

Fabric collections are designed almost a year before they are shipped to fabric shops, and designing quilt kits for a fabric collection happens fairly early in the long process. Since the time this quilt kit was mocked up for Connecting Threads and the quilt kits were finalized, the Summer on the Porch quilt pattern has been updated with a narrow border in all quilt sizes. The quilt pattern available in my shop includes this border, but the quilt kit and pattern available at Connecting Threads does not include this border.

Ombre Mountains Quilt in Timeworn Fabrics by Dan Morris for QT Fabrics!

Coming in October 2026 is the Timeworn fabric collection by Dan Morris for QT Fabrics. The 28 prints in the collection are weathered blenders in dramatic hues, and feature a painted texture that evokes natural wear and authentic patina. Colors range from earthy browns and blacks to warm oranges, moody blues, teals, and greens.

Ombre Mountains Throw Quilt in Botanicals!

Today I'm sharing an Ombre Mountains Throw size quilt in vibrant Botanical fabrics. It turned out so pretty! Colors range from teal to purples to pinks, and orange. This quilt pattern includes 6 sizes, and the large pieces are quick and easy to assemble.

Those Vivid Colors!

The fabrics in this quilt are from the Botanical collection by Boundless Fabrics from a number of years ago. The design is exotic floral blenders in a number of jewel and gemstone colors. Soothing teals and blues, plush purples, vibrant pinks and reds, and opulent oranges.

I've had yardage of 16 prints from this collection in my stash for quite awhile and had an epiphany one day that they are perfect for Ombre Mountains! So I cut all of the prints up into 1/2-yard cuts and used one of the bundles to create this quilt, and curated quilt kits from the rest of the bundles. You'll find quilt kits in my shop right here.

The backing and binding on the quilt are also from the Botanicals fabric collection, in colors not found in the quilt top, and they blend in perfectly.

Ombre Mountains Quilt Pattern Features

This pattern includes 6 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King. I've got you covered for all of the math for these six quilt sizes. The block sizes and the number of blocks vary in each quilt size in order to end up with actual quilt sizes.

Ombre Mountains is great way to get some HST practice under your belt. The pattern includes a table that outlines the different combinations of fabrics used in the HSTs, and the clear instructions help you keep all of the fabrics straight.

Big Pieces, Easy Piecing

The large pieces make for a fairly quick quilt. I cut my fabrics with the Accuquilt Go! fabric cutter and took the project to the monthly church quilting group I attend. I like to take simple piecing to work on because with all of the visiting, I tend to make mistakes in my sewing or fabric placement. I would have completed the quilt top that day, but I didn't have enough triangles cut in one of the fabrics.

Note, this pattern does not include instructions on cutting with an Accuquilt fabric cutter. You would need to figure out using the cutter with this pattern on your own.

With only one block to make, piecing is simple. When piecing the rows, I press seams toward the HSts in every other row, alternating with pressing seams away from the HSTs in every other row. This way, when the rows are joined together, the seams nest and the pieces meet crisply. I didn't use pins at all in assembling this quilt top, but I know that sounds awful for some of you, so pin away if you need to!

Longarm Machine Quilting

To use the least yardage as backing for this Throw size quilt, I placed the backing selvedges along the rails with the quilt top sideways. With the quilt top turned like this, it can make some longarm designs not feasible.

I found a design called Tuft Vines at Sew Shabby Pantos, and it ended up perfect for the prints on the fabrics and the design of the quilt. Then thread choice becomes a quandry with a quilt with this many colors, and quilting from top to bottom of the quilt top meant that I could not change colors as the colors change down the quilt top. I chose Superior Omni Light Mulberry 3115. It blends in with all of the colors really well.
