The Creative Rabbit Trail

Because of a new friend, I am once again excited about helping others build and optimize their businesses using social media and on-line marketing sites such as www.manta.com , www.merchantcircle.com , www.yellowpages.com, and so forth. Since I am fairly new to the process myself, I constantly research marketing and entrepreneur sites. In the course of a day, I might read 40 articles, tweet several and write my own summary of two or three. I like to check each resource and follow the links to see where each leads. I guess my main purpose in spending time this way is my insatiable appetite for learning. I do however have an aversion to structured classroom type classes because of the inability to wander from the main subject. Don't get me wrong, I always come back to my main topic of research but I enjoy the trip so to speak. My granddaughter was once criticized by her mom for the way she could completely turn a well organized room into a seeming chaotic mess. As soon as I heard the complaint, I said " she walks in and says, what will I wear for the dance on Saturday?" she throws her closet opened, pulls out a few possible outfits. Then she thinks, "I'll have to see if I have nail polish to match." and pulls out her nail polish and quickly searched for possible color combinations. Of course she has to try a few and then needs the glitter and the decals. "I know, that necklace mom got for me will match, where is it?" as she pulls out several jewelry boxes and in the meantime comes across two or three possible bracelets. "I had a pair of shoes that will look great and maybe this purse…..wait, I can design something and make my own bracelet! Here are the beads, where is the package of links I bought?" Maybe if I try on my outfit, I can FaceTime 'Cindy' and she will have some ideas. I can set up a photo booth with these blankets and block out that annoying light coming in the window. I'll just drag the bench over here…. on and on it goes. Within half an hour, the room is pulled apart but it is all for a bigger purpose, all related and all very, very necessary . I understand completely. Now what was I talking about? Oh yeah, my friend is starting a new business.

Stories all around me.

2012-06-19T07:00:00.000-07:00

Building a business from home isn't as easy as it sounds. My biggest problem is getting inspiration for my blog posts. Where do I get inspiration? From family, friends, strangers, and things I see happening all around me. That entails leaving home, if I leave home, I am not working on my business, or am I? Just meeting new people and talking with old friends or family opens my mind to new ideas, needs, wants, and many ideas for fun. When I am with my grandchildren, the possibilities are endless. Each has a favorite sport, hobby, or crisis to share. Each has an update about their day, a story about a teacher, a friend or their favorite TV show.

I was talking with my 10 year old granddaughter this weekend and asked her what she wanted to do when she visited our house. She is one of our very feminine granddaughters who loves the color pink and loves to brag that her titles are Diva, Princess and High Maintenance. I told her that Grandpa would probably be sitting on the couch after his long day at work and be flipping through the channels with the remote. She would have to get the remote from him so she didn't have to watch Ice Road Truckers or Storage Wars. She quickly replied with a delighted squeal " I love Storage Wars!" Who knew? Like I said, the world is full of surprises and if you open your ears and your heart, the stories are all around you. :)

Today, I had every intention of writing new posts to my blog. We had someone in the house doing some repair work, my husband was sitting happily at his desk busy catching up on his bidding and invoicing. I gathered everything together and was ready to type away until I got called downstairs to approve some repair. Suddenly, trouble started. First my husband saw a wire hanging down and asked why it wasn't plugged into the outlet inside the closet? "I don't know, there aren't enough outlets" I kindly replied. He quickly ran to get another outlet multiplier, thingy and said that would fix it. He cut off part of the case, so it would fit next to all the cables, he replugged everything in, all neat and tidy behind the closed door. Only one problem, nothing turned back on! I ran up and down the stairs checking each computer and plug, I tried the phone......nothing. I restarted the cable router and the Net gear router, nothing. It looked like it was connected...but since I always blame myself, I unplugged, reset, restarted, etc. etc.etc. Nothing! I got on my IPad and turned off the Wi Fy and connected with my cellular plan. Connected to Comcast and logged in, then re-logged in to get to my settings, where I could finally ask for help. Finally, after about five more minutes, there it was, trouble in your area, with both the internet and phone! Just when I replugged all that equipment in, there must have been an outage in our area. Of course I asked myself if I caused the outage? What are the chances that everything came together just at the right moment to keep me from connecting?

So I took my trusty I phone and my I Pad outside to my gazebo and connected via cellular. You have to understand, I literally panic and feel disoriented when I am not connected! In case of an e.m.p., lock me up in my room because I will be miserable! I am so in need of an internet connection that I am right now the owner of a Sprint internet 5 way connection for my car, I have an AT&T, connection on my I Pad, I have Comcast high speed at home, and I own an I phone with the unlimited data Sprint connection I love. I'm afraid to get rid of any of them in-case one does not work in a certain area or there is no Wi Fy hot spot nearby. Even with all those connections, I still look for hotels by the internet connection service they offer. Don't get me started about cruise ships! I am going to have to find a good reason to purchase a connection the next time I go.

Here it is 5 o'clock and I am finally back on line after a quick run to KFC for dinner. What is next?

GOOGLE+ is great, I notified them of a problem with my site and two hours later I turned my computer back on and it was fixed! I don't know how they are handling 40 million visitors, but it seems the answers are right there when I need them! Thanks Google! You made building a Blog and building web sites fun! Now if I can just make sure all my pages are linked! That's probably fixed automatically too! :)

The Sound of Nature

2012-06-02T10:31:00.002-07:00

Toomey Landscaping recently installed a new waterfall for us. They did an excellent job, they were professional and courteous, and worked hard to complete the large job on time. I am more than pleased with their expertise and will be recommending them to everyone I know.

Updated waterfall

2012-06-02T10:30:00.000-07:00

Hi everyone, after only two weeks we have a brand new waterfall and pond! It's amazing, when Joe said he could, he meant it! He kept to his timeline even though we added a lot more to the original plan. Joe Toomey Landscaping in Belle Vernon, PA is the best! His ideas are original and he is able to transform any space into an area filled with visual interest and natural water fall sounds. He corrected a lot of problems we had with our original pond and recreated it to look as if it belonged here forever. It fits in perfectly with the surrounding woodsy setting. Since I use the gazebo as my summer office, I really wanted the pond and waterfall to be natural and have a great sound. When I learn how to add sound to my site I'll add it here. Go to Joe's site and see more of his work, then contact him to see what he can do in your garden.

Work at Amazon's Mechanical Turk

2012-05-16T15:53:00.002-07:00

I tried Mechanical Turk, I am a stay at home Mom and needed a boost in confidence. I found that I could do amazingly well on all the tasks I tried. I found that my reading level is not really stuck in the preschool books, I can still scan and read pages of web links quickly and pick out the one assigned. After my first hour, I too thought it might not be worth the effort, but I four that the second hour brought better results and higher paying assignments. I set up a routine and made sure I kept the search engine open in a separate window and knew what the assignment was asking for before hitting accept. I was able to complete more assignments in a shorter time frame. Since I already use Amazon to buy and sell, I will continue to fill spare half hour slots with these 'jobs'. If nothing else, they are an exercise for my mind, especially when I get really zoned in and compete against myself. You have a great blog! @workfromhome7T7

Weekend

2011-01-10T10:13:00.000-08:00

I worked all weekend to learn the ins and outs of blogging and building web sites. I don't know what I accomplished but somewhere in the deep recesses of my brain I must have learned and progressed in getting to the goal of having a successful web site. More later after I take a break!

My crazy Bernese Mountain Dog

2011-01-09T19:25:00.000-08:00

It's cold outside, really, really, cold! Just when I get settled nice and cozy in my comfy chair, over ambles Bella, my 2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. She starts to nudge me with her cold nose and starts her dance. It's a combination of a hop and a turn of her head and a deep rumbling growl-yawn-whine, all the while she is hopping and doing a half body twist and a swing of her head toward the door. She weighs about 90 pounds and keeps that big fluffy tail wagging the whole time. When I finally get up and open the door, she bounds down the stairs two at a time and plops down right in the snow and sighs. It's as if she is saying, finally, a break from the heat! It's 20 degrees outside and snowing and windy and you would think she just arrived in the Bahamas. At least I don't have to worry if we fall asleep and forget to let her back in for an hour or so. If she really wants in she knocks on the door with her tail and woofs till we come get her. You can't ignore that woof. What an awesome dog!!!

No visitors

2011-01-09T18:59:00.000-08:00

So how do I get visitors to my sites? So far not one friend or foe has bothered to visit. I think it is just like everything else. Everyone wants to express themselves but no one ever responds. I can email, post to facebook, twitter, blog, make web sites, etc. Even my kids never responded to my requests. Maybe its just me but I have no idea how to get a response. I even tried to send an "is anyone out there really alive?" email and got NO response! 153 emails and NOT ONE PERSON ANSWERED. I tried to ask for address updates so I could send Christmas cards, NOTHING Its the same with this blog 0 response.

Found It!

I have finally found a great way to make money and have someone to talk to also! Amazon's Associates Program is the easiest and best. I'm signing my sister up today. Who knows maybe I'll get rid of all that great stuff in my basement too.

I know I'm getting rid of my Grandsons GECKO on Monday. My granddaughter is giving it to her science teacher with all the extra small pet supplies I have accumulated over the years too. My grandson goes to the same school district so he can visit him whenever he wants to.

This gecko is named Leopardy, you guessed it, it’s a leopard gecko! Well he was only 5 when he named it. The science teacher sounded real excited to get it. Wait till he hears that Leopardy is also a Pittsburgh Steeler fan. You heard that right, this gecko crawls out from under his water dish and gets up on his rock only during a Steelers game or when I put fresh crickets in his cage. He never comes out for the Eagles or Browns…...wonder why? All I know is he likes the Steelers. My grandson decorated his box with Steeler stickers. It looks great and he is easy to take care of but I feel sorry for him since my grandson moved away. Leopardy liked his deep booming voice too. Maybe that's why he likes the Steelers….all the deep booming noise? "Of course he is Black & Gold" my husband said…"a perfect fit". So all you Steeler fans out there a leopard gecko would make a good mascot for the Steelers. The Geico gecko was successful wasn't he?

Golden Years

2010-06-01T16:21:00.000-07:00

I have raised my 3 children, all are grown and have children of their own. Even one of my grandchildren is old enough to get a job and will soon be off to college! So as I enter the next phase of my life I asked "what is it that I always wanted to do?" After spending my time remodeling our house, yard crashing my yard, raising a Bernese Mountain dog from a puppy (who also crashed our yard on occasion), I decided to try my hand at blogging. It doesn't matter if anyone is really out there because I've been talking to the wind for years. I'm actually amazed when someone really does answer an email or a phone for that matter. I think we all just talk, leave messages, write emails, forward articles, etc. etc. Where do they all go? At least they take up less space than snail mail. They are easily deleated, easily filed in the vast Google wonderland of information.

I tried sending out emails quering if anyone was really alive at this address, does anyone really exist out there? I even asked things like "would you like to share a Million $ with me?" Nothing, Nada, Zilch, Zip. Oh I get lots of emails every day, lots of forwards, lots of news I can't use, tons of requests to get on more facebook pages, etc. etc.

Speaking of facebook, where do all of you find time to play fishville everyday?

Starting a home business - beware

2010-06-01T16:03:00.000-07:00

My daughter was employed for 4 years, when the economy plunged she lost her job. She searched diligently for a job, submitting application after application. After several months she decided to take Real Estate classes, begin a new career. After taking the exam and passing it the first time she was really excited. She could still earn a small amount of money while she built her business and continue collecting her checks, right? Wrong!!!
As soon as she got a check for a commision from a rental she handled, about $150.00 she reported the income to unemployment. No problem right? Wrong again!!! They told her that even though she had only collected a few months checks, and even though she fulfilled the obligation to find a job, she was now considered SELF-employed, so she did not qualify for unemployment. She had a child to raise, no health insurance and a car payment and the usual bills. Without unemployment she was literally broke.
So be careful how you switch careers, find out what the regulations are in your state.
