December 2019

Glanbia PLC has received two pieces of artwork on loan to Glanbia House from the Butler Gallery as part of a partnership, which launched this week.

The pieces are hanging in two locations in the building and include a piece by Scottish-born artist Grace Henry – Tipperary Parrot – an oil on canvas, which hangs in the foyer location.

The second piece is a painting by Irish abstract landscape artist Patrick Collins – Man on a Country Road. This oil-on-board painting, which hangs outside the boardroom, is a typical representation of the broody style of the painter, who has exhibited in many of the world’s top galleries.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase these significant pieces of art at Glanbia House as part of a partnership with the Butler Gallery as they prepare to move to their new home. The Butler Gallery, which is currently located at Kilkenny Castle, is moving to Evans’ Home in Kilkenny City in spring 2020.

Director and Chief Curator of the Butler Gallery Anna O’ Sullivan, said that they are very excited about the new move which is a fantastic addition to Kilkenny’s cultural offering:

“We at Butler Gallery are delighted to renew our partnership with Glanbia this year with two important paintings by Grace Henry and Patrick Collins from the Butler Gallery collection going on view at Glanbia House in Kilkenny. We look forward to welcoming all Glanbia employees and their families to the Butler Gallery at Evans’ Home where they can enjoy our stunning new contemporary art gallery, view our permanent collection, stroll in our beautiful gardens, sample something delicious in our café, and check out opportunities to participate in creative workshops in our dedicated learning centre. With the support of Glanbia and the wider community we can ensure Butler Gallery thrives as a creative art space, breathing life back into Evans’ Home, one of Kilkenny’s most historic and iconic buildings.”

Speaking at the installation of the works at Glanbia House this week, Naoise Coogan, Corporate Communications Manager, said that she was excited to see the works hanging in Glanbia.

“We are privileged to have these two important works on display at our headquarters and we value the opportunity to showcase the artists of the Butler Gallery, which is on our doorstep here in Kilkenny. We look forward to visiting the new space when it opens in the spring and wish the Butler Gallery team the best of luck in this very exciting new venture.”

The final exhibition in the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny Castle, A Most Favourable Soil looked to the botanical practice of grafting as a metaphor that links people, sites, land use, and production. The exhibition considered how each architectural iteration of the new Butler Gallery site has, since the twelfth century, utilised aspects of the physical fabric of the previous building. Thus, the stones of the St. John’s Priory, the first buildings that occupied the land, serve as a form of rootstock that has been blended with each new structure. This concept of grafting and melded creations not only emphasises the regeneration of the Evans’ Home site, but also has a strong connection to the history of orchards in the area. Prior’s Orchard, that stretched along the river in front of the priory’s property, is but one example.

The metaphor also draws connections to several individuals who were instrumental in the making of the alms house. The architect for the Evans’ Home, William Robertson, was related to a late 18th/early 19th century Kilkenny nurseryman, John Robertson. The title of the exhibition is from John Robertson’s writing on orchards that suggests a location on the bank of a river and a strong loam as the most favourable soil. The fertile land along the east side of the river Nore will now bring cultural growth into fruition.

The layout of the exhibition first offers an overview of the related histories of the current Butler Gallery site and the new one. It then touches on the building that will become the new Butler Gallery, the Evans’ Home, suggesting the layered histories of the male and female residents. The show returns to the metaphor of grafting and blended growth in the final room, anticipating the beauty, collaboration, and rich content of the new museum. The exhibition features work by Varujan Boghosian, Charlotte Wheeler Cuffe, Micky Donnelly, Peter Hutchinson, Nevill Johnson, Stefan Kurten, Katie Ridley Murphy, Seoidin O’Sullivan, Joe Peragine, Jack Pierson, and Daphne Wright.

Selvage is a curatorial collective from the USA that includes Julia Brock, Teresa Bramlette Reeves and Kirstie Tepper. Their practice reveals and visualizes alternative narratives and history. With a strong commitment to service, they work with partners to identify a particular need and research focus that allows for discovery on both sides of the partnership. In examining the past they rewrite future understanding of a time and place and embrace nostalgia as a form of knowledge rather than sentimental longing. The collective works in the borderland of fact, hearsay, and fiction, wherein one finds multiple voices and stories to share.

With thanks to the Arts Council for essential annual funding and to the OPW, Department of Social Protection and Kilkenny Local Authorities for additional assistance.

Special thanks are extended to the team at IMMA.

The Butler Gallery is honoured to present a group of works that were recently donated to the gallery’s Permanent Collection under a cultural bequest from the estate of Seán and Rosemarie Mulcahy. This special group of works include small sculptures by Eilis O’Connell and Ian Stuart, works on paper by Nathaniel Hone, Cecil King, James O’Nolan, Tony O’Malley, Camille Souter, Donald Teskey, and paintings by Basil Blackshaw, Hughie O’Donoghue, Nano Reid and Bennie Reilly and a photograph of the glamourous couple by Amelia Stein. Seán and Rosemarie were avid collectors and lived in an art filled home on Leeson Park in Dublin. They attended many openings here at the Butler Gallery over their lifetime and had friends and family living in Kilkenny where they visited often.

Bernice Harrison wrote in The Irish Times in September, 2018: “As a couple they were well known figures in the city’s art and heritage circles. Rosemarie was an internationally renowned Spanish art specialist and a popular professor at UCD. Her unusual career trajectory began when, while a teenage student in Spain, she started modelling for Balenciaga, a career that then took her to Paris. Returning to Dublin on the death of her father, she modelled for couturier Ib Jorgensen, and it was during one of his fashion shows that she caught the eye of engineer (and later artist) Seán Mulcahy. The pair married and entertained artists, academics and writers in their Leeson Park home, which they filled with art, colour and decorative objects picked up on their travels. Rosemarie died suddenly in 2012, while in her 70s and on her way to her flamenco class; Seán, who lived on into his 90s, died in 2018.”

Seán Mulcahy was both an engineer and an artist and exhibited in Ireland, Scotland and the USA and this bequest includes a work by him entitled Placescape IX from an exhibition he had at the Oliver Cornet Gallery in 2012. It shows landscapes inside worlds of textured colour that are composed and controlled.

Seán Mulcahy (1926-2018) had an important international practice that included partnerships with Jorgen Varming for most of his working life. His impressive engineering career spanned almost the entire second half of the 20th century from the post-war years right up to the early dawn of the Celtic Tiger era. He was involved with many notable buildings including Ireland’s first major post-war building Aras Mhic Dhiarmada, better known today as Busaras, the Chester Beatty Library, Coventry Cathedral, St. Catherine’s College, Sydney Opera. Mulcahy enjoyed strong working relationship with architects and was acknowledged at the end of his career with Honorary membership of The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland/RIAI.

Rosemarie Mulcahy (née Scully) (1943-2012) had an enduring relationship with UCD, graduating with a BA in 1973 and later teaching an annual module in the Department of History of Art (now the UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy). At the time of her death she was Adjunct Professor in Art History, a role she had fulfilled for a year. Described by colleagues as a “generous and popular teacher”, she was also a Visiting Professor in Renaissance Studies at Smith College, Northampton, US in 2009. Rosemarie was a distinguished ambassador for Spain in Ireland and was an authority on Spanish art both in Spain and internationally. She published in the Burlington Magazine, Apollo and Archivo Español de Arte, and is the author of the catalogue Spanish Paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland and Navarrete el Mudo, Pintor de Felipe II. She was an honorary associate of the Hispanic Society of America, an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and an honorary senior fellow in the Department of the History of Art in University College Dublin.
