Hi!  Friday is upon us.

I have been very busy as of late.  I have started street busking with others and have gotten some very positive feedback so far.  It’s nice to skip rehearsals and club owners and booking agents and amplification and lousy soundmen…

Parking downtown still sucks, and taking a pee is usually a headache, but that can certainly be said of clubs too.

Today Jen and I found a few extra hours to work on the van.  Pictures soon.

As a treat for myself, I have a classic computer game headed my way in the mail.  It’s Baldur’s Gate 1 plus Tales of the Sword Coast.

I’m going to install it and its sequel on an old laptop with the mod The BiG World Project!  It’s over 100 hours of newly added fan material and it’s all (mostly all) awesome stuff!  Want to know more?  The article here explains it nicely.  Gets you started at least.

I was going to save it for when I was too old to do anything else, but I might be running marathons by then.  You never know.  Anyhow… I can’t stay away from it for too long.  I’m addicted to it.

At least it isn’t as bad as smoking crack I guess.

And now I’d like to finally speak all about the recent event I attended.

It was called The Austin Nerd Cave Showcase and it was really great!  It didn’t have very many nerds, but it did have some really cool other people.

My next door neighbor was Dan.  He has a comic called Latex Avenger.  He was funny and cool and gave me a full color comic book!

Also I got another one of Barry’s business cards somehow.  Barry Comp and Shane Campos are the RackRobo duo.  But everyone already knows that! Racketeer Robot rules!

I also got a business card and a poster from Aaron Bir.  He has a ton of stuff going on amidst his many webpages.  Amongst it all is a graphic novel three years in the making!

Lisa Chouinard had the coolest soap amongst her many cool things that had toys inside!  One was a Marx WW2 sniper army man!  If I’d had soap like that as a kid I would have washed my hands all the time!  Gotta get to the toy inside!

Lastly I’d like to send a big shout out to ShoNuff Studio and Halo Seraphim and Terry Parr.  Thank you thank you thank you!  You are awesome!

Also today I have the pictures of the van floor I mentioned previously, but I still haven’t gotten around to talking all about our recent event.  Never fear for I shall!  Meanwhile… van pics.

What are you looking at?  Well… our conversion van previously had all the typical crap no one wants like carpet and captain’s chairs.  We tossed all of that out.  This is our new wooden floor to build upon.

We got all the furniture included with the van out, including the extra seat belts, plugged all the holes left behind, and even kept the foam padding beneath the carpet in tact.  Over it we placed the wood.

I don’t know if you can tell by looking, but we laid the floor in as pieces.  One between the wheel wells that goes to the back doors, one in front of the wheel wells, and one in front that leaves room for the side doors.

I sketched the floor concept, we measured everything, and Jen did the math at the hardware store and had the wood cut to fit.  A use for math!  Who knew?!

Jen is a genius.  Anyway…

More van progress as it develops.

In another news…

Our second full sized comic book has been even more challenging to create than our first.  After it concludes and I make the cover, I might color some classics and make a bunch of fan comics for our internet friends before I get to the third comic.

Maybe.  It’s something I’m thinking about.

I know it’s Monday, but despite that fact at least you get to see…

MC’s Crazy Drum Set of the Week!

I’m obsessed.  I know it.  I have a compulsion to reinvent the wheel.  For myself alone I suppose.  Anyway…

Let me say in advance the backgrounds in these images are busy and I apologize for that.  It was about to rain so I didn’t pull the kit from storage and set it up inside.  Focus on the blue stuff basically I guess.

I’m calling this kit Blue Busker Version 01.  It’s a little drum with accessories that packs within itself.  It’s still in development.

Here it is packed for travel:

The throne (seat) is an old cushion mounted to a 5 gallon bucket.  Here is a another image of the kit being unpacked but not yet set up.

The main drum was originally meant for brushes.  It has a coated head.

It performed admirably on it’s debut gig in a small room with a small audience.  However, during it’s second night out the crowd was larger and the room was filled with the sounds of revelry.  Small sticks did the trick, but I hadn’t yet even installed a snare!  Soon to be corrected believe you me.

The main drum is on three legs made from thin dowel rod and attached to the drum with some hardware from Home Depot.  If anyone is interested I’ll go and get the specific part names.  They tighten and loosen with a screwdriver and were a sweet sweet find.  I’ll be doing more with those.  Meanwhile…

Let’s set up the kit real quick, shall we?

The mini bass drum that rested on top now sits on the ground and is played with an inverted beater on a bass drum pedal.  It’s quite muffled and sounds light but rather tough.  It still needs an anchor.  It slides away from me when I get to jamming on it, but not as badly as you might expect.  Definitely fixable.  It just needs a floor mat to catch the soon-to-be-installed anchors.  Preferably something I can roll up and fit  into the bucket throne (seat).

The cymbal stands:

Never purchase cymbal stands again I tell you!  I made these for under five dollars each.  The bases are old junky microphone stand bottoms.  Thin wooden dowel fits right into them.  The weighted base of the small table top mic stand is best for a splash cymbal, but the tripod can handle any sized cymbal.  Blue tape was added to match the drum.  (Yes, the whole kit is wrapped in blue duct tape.  No, you can’t tell from a distance over a few feet.  It looks great and it’s six bucks for a roll).

Lastly, here is an image of my finalized bamboo skewer Wood Whacks:

I was able to make five with one package of bamboo skewers.  I also discovered a package of bamboo skewers at Wal Mart recently for 99 cents!  Below is an old jingle ring for my trusty tambourine shoe.

We went to the movies when we visited Jen’s family and ended up seeing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with Jen’s parents!  Whoa…

They were cool about it but Jen was a little embarrassed.

The critics allegedly like that movie.  I think they like any movie with a-

SPOILER ALERT!

I think they like any movie with a butt rape scene.  Want a critically acclaimed movie?  Add a butt rape scene.

I didn’t think much of the movie, but I do feel invested in the main character, and I want to see the sequels.  Netflicks has all three of the original movies (the one in theaters is a remake) but I don’t often have the time to read a subtitled movie.  Usually I’m doing three things at once when I watch a movie.

We didn’t know it would be shock value and gratuitous sex throughout.  Not exactly the holiday family film we set out to see.

We thought it was a murder mystery!  I guess it’s thinly disguised as one.

Anyway…  I thought that was a funny story.

I guess I have little else to type currently, and it’s very late and I have to take the van to have the remainder of the seat and seat belt hardware removed tomorrow morning.

Oh!  We sold the extra van seats!  Twenty bucks!

2012!  Doom and gloom!  I love it.  I don’t think the earth will end this year but I’d be fine with that.  I do think humans will make Earth too whatever to sustain human life in a century or less from now, but that isn’t exactly this year.

I have a theory about the Mayan calendar thing.

In ancient times:

“Are you guys still working on that calendar?!  You’ve been charting those stars for a long time!  What year are you up to?  2012?!?  Take a break!  You can get back to that calendar stuff later.”

And… that’s my theory.  Anyway…

But enough about pineapple and the end in 2012.  I’m not convinced they actually have anything to do with one another.  Unless they do, but I kind of doubt it.
