Selling on EBay has become a popular phenomenon. Many a time I've heard people mention that they bought their latest gadget from no other then EBay. For the craft lover who doesn't know where to begin marketing their crafts, EBay would be a good start. It is the best way to get the broadest audience's attention. EBay goes beyond your backyard and reaches people all over the world. With their advanced search engine, it allows someone who may be looking for a particular item to go straight to what their looking for.

For those who have heard of EBay but not actually gone searching, this is how it works. For a first time seller, you must create an EBay account which includes your name, address and credit card number (secure site). Once you've filled in the online forms, you will have your own seller account which will list your auctions. Each time you want to check your sales, you must log in with a screen name and password. When selling an item, you will go through a series of pages describing your item for sale. To top it off, you will upload a picture onto the auction site for others to view your craft. When listing a craft, you will be charged an initial fee which is a set amount for the listed price. For example: If you list a craft for .99 cent, your initial fee will be .25 cent. If you list an item from $1.00-9.99, your initial fee will be .35 cent and so on. Once your item has sold, you will also be charged a "final value fee." This is calculated by a percentage of what your craft actually sold for. If someone likes your craft they will put a bid on it. If someone else comes along and wants the same craft, they will put a higher bid on it. At the end of the auction which is generally seven days, the highest bidder wins.

EBay also offers EBay stores, which allow you to sell many items in an online store. When listing an item, you usually list a BIN (Buy it Now) price. There is no auction involve. In your online store, you can list prices as well as pictures of the item. This is a good route to go if you plan on selling multiple items of different colors, shapes or use.

Be sure to list pictures. People love to see pictures of the items their bidding on. You even have the option of placing multiple pictures on your auction site. Try to get different angles when taking pictures. Get close-ups of any detailed work. When taking the picture, be sure to get it in the right lighting and best background. Appearance sells!

When listing a price at auction, it's best to start low. This will attract more buyers to your item. If someone is interested in your craft and they want to watch it to see the bids being placed on it, they can put it in their "watch." You will know how many people are taking interest in your item because the number of watches shows up beside the item in your account.

When listing your craft, be sure to give plenty of detail. If there is a default in the craft, make sure you explain that in the description. Also describe the color and the size of the item. If you sell it in various colors, explain this to the potential buyer. Some people are looking for a certain color and you want to be open to them. If they like your item, they might come back for more in the future.

EBay isn't for everyone. Sales are made by pay pal, cashiers check or even person checks, whatever you're willing to accept. And the only communication that generally transpires between the seller and buyers is through email.

The most important thing to remember when getting started is to be honest about the item, and explain the craft in detail. People want to know all there is about an item that they may purchase. Explain the texture if you're selling something that is wearable. Let them know about the special detail you've put into a painting. And if you're expertise is pottery, elaborate on the special colors used for the craft.

If you love to sew, and quilt, then why not incorporate them into a business?

I find a great angle for a business like this, is to offer to finish other peoples quilts. I know you may prefer to make them from scratch and show them off at craft shows, but what happens is, many people will walk by your quilt, admire it, then say “Oh I have one I am trying to finish at home”

They feel too guilty to buy your quilt, because they have one they started years ago, and due to time, kids, stress and life, they just have not got it done, and it sits in a corner somewhere collecting dust.

Since quilting is your passion, then why not offer to finish off these quilts for a price?

Or, offer to start one from scratch with their fabrics and colors.

Another great quilt people like, since they are fairly quick, are the rag quilts. You could offer to create a rag quilt for your customer, using their fabrics, or fabric squares you have, and make a rag quilt in a weekend.

A rag quilt is much faster to make, there is not the fancy stitching afterwards, and these rag quilts actually get better the more times they are washed, so they make for a very useful quilt.

If you just want to make your own rag quilt, then there are many books on the subject, and you can purchase many fat quarters, or quilt squares online now. This is a great way to get some unique fabrics, as you are looking worldwide while on the internet.

Get quilting, and make some money.

When a person starts to think about sewing machines, the name of Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines will immediately come to their mind. These sewing machines enjoy legendary status and with special models like the Featherweight 221 as well as 222, there is even more to be impressed about these sewing machines. In fact, these models have actually helped to usher in portable sewing machines.

Another thing that immediately strikes you about Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines is that they are built to last and they are also renowned for their sturdiness. In fact, such is their durability and strength that there are many vintage machines around that continue to provide perfect service even after many decades of use. But, it is the lightweight and portable models that have captured everyone's hearts and minds and quilters in particular are the most prone to using such models.

Featherweight is a name in sewing machines that everyone knows about and respects. These Singer sewing machines even come with sixteen or more inbuilt stitches and in addition they boast of having automatic needle threaders as well as four step buttonholders, and a lot more as well. The best part is that Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines are very affordable and in case you need a lightweight machine then these are the best buys for you.

Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines are light in weight, compact and some models are truly portable and weigh as little as just eleven odd pounds. They are also loaded with some very exciting features that help in coping with the vast numbers of different materials as well as modern sewing techniques that are being used today.

Using Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines mean that you can rest assured that you will get quick as well as professional end results. These machines can easily be transported and they can also prove to be great for quilting work.

From the days when the first Featherweight Singer sewing machines came out to the present there have been many important changes that have made succeeding generations of these wonderful sewing machines outdo each previous model. In fact, during the period between 1934 and 1964 the best Featherweights were being produced that helped in doing a wonderful job of piecing.

Obviously, the term Featherweight alludes to the fact that such sewing machines are very light in weight. However, at the same time, it must be stressed that the earlier versions could only do just one stitch and that was the straight stitch. However, these machines did these straight stitches better than what any other sewing machine could hope to achieve. And, they were also very quiet sewing machines as well.

The reason why Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines are such favorites among quilters is that the Featherweight can create very pretty stitches and since it is so light, it is also ideally suited for taking to a stitching class.

A little known fact about Singer featherweight sewing machines is that hidden beneath the rather ugly black colored paper on the machines cases, is some truly beautiful oak wood. This is just one more reason why these sewing machines have been elevated to a truly lofty and legendary status.

Diana discovered the joy of pottery after suffering a terrible divorce. Taking a seat at the wheel with a lump of clay, she felt an immediate release. Her mind cleared and her heart rate slowed down. She was able to relax in a way she hadnt for weeks. Better than therapyand medication! she happily reported to her doctor after her first day at a community education class, where she went on to make friends with fellow potters, further enriching her life.

For Kris it was counted cross-stitch. The repetitive motion of the needle passing up and down through crisp cloth put her in a near-meditative state, the way yoga does for some. In this state Kris was able to work out solutions to her daily challenges. It was like the ideas dropped into my mind out of the sky, she told a close friend.

Shawn found furniture restoration to be wonderfully soothing after a stressful day at the office. The raw scent of wood loosened him up, and he was surprised how satisfying it was to sit down at a table he had restored himself.

Such is the world of DIY. Discovering the right craft for your personality and temperament can be a reward that transforms your life.

The crafting world is as wide and diverse as a tropical rainforest. Each crafting activity has unique benefits and challenges. You could spend your entire life just trying out different crafts. While this may be fun, it can be expensive and frustrating. Should you desire to narrow your search down, this article will act as your guide by investigating the world of crafts as they fit into five spectrums. If one activity doesnt suit you, take heart. Crafting is for everyoneyou are bound to find that perfect match.

1. Short-term projects vs. long-term projects.

Do you have a need for immediate gratification? If you do, you might prefer cake decorating, ceramics, candle-making, lotions-n-potions, or cut-n-paste projects (scrapbooking, collage, and decoupage), which deliver results relatively quickly. Conversely, if you are known to possess the patience of Job, needlecrafts and quilting may be your thing. (Although quilting by machine cuts down the time dramatically). If you like long-term projects, pottery and gardening are also excellent choices, since they involve several steps.

2. Fastidiousness vs. playfulness/ looseness

Needlecrafts, baking, and jewelry-making require a meticulous and careful eye, whereas cooking, gardening and cut-n-paste projects are more appropriate for the playful type. Keep in mind that many activities can go either way or are best for those who can balance a bit of each quality.

3. Planner by nature vs. spontaneous to the core

If you dont mind doing a little math, counted cross-stitch, knitting, and crochet are great activities. Needlecrafts, quilting and sewing also require planning and pattern-reading. If all this sounds too boring or frustrating and you prefer to jump headlong into projects as soon as you feel an urge, cut-n-paste, candle-making, ceramics, or pottery may be a better fit.

4. Space available

Do you affectionately call your apartment a cupboard? If you need an activity that takes up little space or can be cleaned up in a jiffy, yarn and needlecrafts can be tucked away in a basket or a drawer. Baking and cake decorating use what you probably already have in your kitchen, and jewelry only needs a modest tackle-box with little compartments for beads and tools. But perhaps you have a room or a whole basement where a hobby could take up a permanent residence? Pottery is such a hobby. If you quilt by hand you will need a room where a fairly large frame can be set up (unless you only want to do baby quilts). A table for laying out and cutting patterns is required for sewing, and most people dont appreciate having to lug out the machine every time you want to work on a project. (However, it can be done.) Lotions-n-potions, and candle and soap making can be done in the kitchen as long as precautions are taken, but ideally they need a separate space, since you are using dangerous chemicals that you dont want to accidentally mix with food. Gardening is ideal if you have a nice-sized yard, but many green-thumbed apartment dwellers find cultivating the space around their windows, on their patio, or even potted indoor plants a satisfying diversion. Dont lose heart if you dont have space for an activity that interests youjust sign up for a community class!

5. Available funds for expenses

Each craft has a range of what you could pay for the activity, depending on your taste and willingness. If you are picky about using only hand-dyed, organically grown 100% wool yarn, you are going to pay a lot more than someone who works with an acrylic yarn available at the closest Woolworths. It is a good idea when just starting out to borrow someone elses equipment, or use inexpensive supplies until you know it is an activity you are going to stick with. Then you can slowly replace your supplies with quality items that you appreciate. On average, pottery and sewing require more expensive equipment to begin, while you can garden, cross-stitch, or cut-n-paste on a shoestring budget. Yarn crafts are the cheapest activities to try, since they dont require a lot of expensive equipment to start. Again, a class might be the best investment for the more expensive hobbies.

If you still aren't sure which craft is right for you, talk to other crafters about why they enjoy their craft. Ask if you can join them one day to see if it is something that appeals to you. Be patient with yourself as you begin each new activity--nothing kills the excitement of trying something new more than impossibly high expectations. Don't worry--as you continue, your skills will improve. You will also know better which activities suit you best.

Weddings.

These life changing, always memorable events are frequently the catalysts for nuptial-themed scrapbook albums. But true creative scrapbooking artisans have come to realize that only one wedding scrapbook might not be enough!

Here Comes the Bride… Her Dad… Your Cousin… The Neighbors…

Take a moment to consider how many people are in attendance at the typical wedding. Aside from the bride and groom, there are usually bridesmaids, groomsmen, attendants, flower girls and ring bearers. Add to that the plethora of family members and friends—fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, former roommates, school chums, grandparents—and you have a bounty of people for whom scrapbook albums would be perfect mementoes.

Of course, this is great news to the professional scrapper who desires to make a partial living off her creative scrapbooking abilities, selling her innovative scrapbook albums by the dozen.

It’s also terrific for the recreational scrapbooking fan (and new bride!) who wants to test her skills at arranging wedding scrapbook albums as a “thank you” for everyone who attended her special day.

But no matter who is putting together the scrapbook (seasoned scrapper or newbie artist), it’s critical to have a plan in place before setting off on this exciting adventure. Otherwise, you could find yourself with tons of scrapbooking embellishments and few finished projects.

The Wedding (scrapbook album) Planner

The key to arranging phenomenal wedding scrapbook albums is to develop a strategy before ever lifting a gel pen or unpeeling a sticker. This game plan can be as intricate as you need. Some scrappers prefer to simply write down the names of recipients for whom they’d like to make albums and then jump right in to their work. For them, a simple list is enough of a guideline.

Other scrapbooking gurus prefer to establish a more comprehensive blueprint, describing their intended scrapbook albums in greater detail (e.g. including approximate number of pages, size of album, theme of album, anticipated scrapbook products.)

Regardless of your organizational style, once you’ve written down at least a general idea of how you want to create your wedding scrapbook albums, it’s time to check your scrapbook accessories. (Nothing’s worse than finding out you’ve run out of card stock in the middle of a fun project!)

Evaluate your inventory, then decide whether you need to purchase scrapbook supplies online or if you have enough items in your scrapbooking kit. If you’re unsure as to whether you need more, know that it’s always better to have a little too much.

Making Memories Come Alive Again

Your next step will be to sort applicable photos and nostalgic items for inclusion in the wedding scrapbook albums. Simple enough, but don’t breeze through the process.

For instance, if you’re creating an 8-page scrapbook for your six-year-old niece who served as your flower girl, you’ll want to create a very special scrapbook using photos of her (don’t forget about those silly candids that make such delightful creative scrapbooking items!) If you have dried flowers, pictures of flowers or even flower-themed scrapbook products, you could add them, too.

Taking this hypothetical creative scrapbooking scenario a step further, you could also choose card stock that mirrors the colors (and perhaps fabrics) of both your wedding and your flower girl’s dress. Remember—there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to arrange scrapbook albums, but they should have a strong sense of originality and personality.

I Do… Thank You

Once your scrapbook albums are completed, the method of transporting them is entirely up to you.

Sent in the mail to friends and relatives who took part in your marriage ceremony, wedding scrapbook albums make a lovely surprise. Of course, a face-to-face delivery is a powerful way to say, “Thanks for being a part of our marriage”, too.

In the end, your creative scrapbooking generosity will not go unnoticed, and the thoughtful scrapbook albums you’ve produced will be treasured for generations to come.

Today more and more people are seeking out handmade crafts in order to give something a little more unusual as a present, which has a more unique feel. Whether it is for Christmas, birthdays or weddings, there is definitely something rather special about the look and feel of a handcrafted item.

However, there is a huge difference between creating beautiful gift’s for friends and family and profiting from your own successful craft business.

First of all the key word here is: business. If you want to start, operate and run your craft company as full time home employment, then there are several factors that you should take into account.

The secret to earning good money from the craft industry is to set up multiple streams of income. The old days of making up plenty of items for your local craft fair and hoping you will sell most of them, have gone. The craft shows now are a wonderful opportunity for you to show visitors your merchandise, take orders, discover what are the current trends and most importantly find out what your competitors are up to.

Because of the expense involved today in making up stock in advance of possible sales, it is a good idea to photograph every item you make and keep a good portfolio of your work.

Obviously craft fair’s are not going to supply a good enough income, so now it is advisable for you to enter the computer world. Putting your craft business online is one way you can start to create a decent income by diversifying.

Introduce yourself to the craft world by advertising your work. Put up for sale a few ready made inexpensive items. Here is where you can reproduce those photographs of previously sold work. Offer discounts to existing customers who could supply you with testimonials, hopefully orders will come in for future work. Keep a very tight eye on your schedule, never be late on a delivery date.

Apart from working out how long it takes to create an item, give a thought to allowing extra time for the administration work that your new business will demand. Unfortunately you will have to master the basics of marketing, selling, bookkeeping and website management. Maybe you have a family member who could help you with this side of the business.

Once you have a website up and running here is where you can start to earn some extra money. Open up a small gift shop, although online give it the feel of an old-fashioned store. Offer patterns, fabrics, notions, books, particularly the new popular eBooks. Join with some other craft business companies and become an affiliate for them.

Depending on how large you wish to make your craft business you can take the supply as far as you wish to go. Add card-making, candles, clay, decoupage, jewellery, beads, art supplies, the list is endless.

Starting a home based craft business really is one of those rare opportunities where you can just run a small made to order company, or let it grow into as large an enterprise as you can handle.

It becomes human nature to create. As a society, we have created items which add to our needs, convenience, and comfort factors. When looking at items which are crafted with great precision and time, often they are looked upon with awe-inspiring eyes and the longing to be able to create the intricate items seen in our society today. Believe it or not, you CAN craft. It may take some trial and error to find that special item that you feel comfortable with and do well, but in the end, you can create just as well as anyone else.

First things first. Make a list of things you think you would like to try. So many things are just waiting for your attention!! Once you make your list, put it in the order of interest. Take that one thing and find some online groups or you may have a local group that meets weekly or monthly in your area. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce or go to your local hobby and craft stores to search for announcements of up-coming classes and join them. You will be less likely to quit or give up if you have personal support.

Do not be tempted to go on a spending spree simply to indulge your most recent challenge. Completing your craft doesn't require having the latest and greatest tools. Most of the time, if you join a group, someone will be willing to lend you supplies to try it out. Go to garage sales and thrift shops to find used items for pennies to get you started. You can also search online or at your local craft supply store for the supplies or to get a kit that will walk you through step-by-step and give you all of the tools you need to create your new craft.

Remember not to be frustrated as in our world of convenience; we often expect things to happen immediately. Crafting takes time. Set aside an hour or two each evening for some relaxation time and work a little bit more. Depending on the size of the project, in a few days or a week, you will have your creation and ready to show it off.

Once completed, you can give your creation as a gift, sell it, or display it in your home. Crafting can be so much fun for the entire family as well as relieving stress while possibly making a little bit of money in the mean time. Hand made gifts are much more appreciated than something you "think" they might like which could be thrown out or handed down later (unless it is clothes, of course). Crafts also create a feeling of accomplishment, giving you self-worth. Children love them and proudly display them on the front of the refrigerator or on the front of their door. If it is larger, it can be displayed in the yard or around the house. Don't be afraid to try something new. You never know, you may find yourself a new passion!

Like any other hobby, a successful sewing project starts with the right tools and a little knowledge of the craft. Yes, you can easily find the basic sewing tools in your home: your old pair of scissors down in your garage; pins from your drawers, or rulers that your kids use in school.

You will have a more convenient sewing experience if you use the right tools intended for the job. They are very easy to find in your home.

Romina Abrigo Editor of the "Sewing Machine Reviews" website -- http://www.SewingMachineReviews.me -- pointed out;

"…Before you start any sewing activities, make sure you have a checklist to round up all your sewing tools and have a basic sewing kit near you…" Added Romina Abrigo

A basic sewing kit includes a:

    Tape measure
Dressmakers shears
Trimming scissor
Fabric markers both for dark and light markers
Invisible transparent tape
Pincushion and glass-head pins
Hand needles
Needles for sewing machine
Seam ripper

TAPE MEASURE

You use a tape measure to take your own measurements, to check the right measurements on patterns, and some other tasks that need to be measured. There are different types of tape measures but the most practical and easy way is the fabric tape measure that is fabric coated. To keep the tape measure handy, try draping it around your neck.

Dressmakers SHEARS

Have the eight-inch bent shears. Dressmakers shears are the most efficient tools in cutting fabric. These shears have one bent-angle and one straight blade, a rounded thumbhole, and for precise and comfortable cutting, an oblong finger hole. The bent angle blades provide a spot where your index finger can rest for long-cutting jobs. And to ensure more accurate cuts, the bend on the shears blade stops you from lifting your fabric off the table.

THE 5-INCH TRIMMING SCISSORS

These scissors are intended for trimming smaller areas. They blades of these types of scissors are straight, and they have round holes for the thumb and the finger.

When you shop for shears and scissors, see to it that you properly test them first. Make sure that they cut all the way to the blades tips.

FABRIC MARKERS

Remember that in sewing, it is important to match up the right pieces of the project precisely, otherwise, the fit won't be right. So you match the pieces of the fabric patterns correctly, project patterns today now include match points called the dots and the notches, printed on the pattern tissues. The fabric markers especially designed for sewing provide ease in transferring the notches from the fabric pattern to the fabric itself. Some types of fabric markers include:

Disappearing dressmakers chalks: These are great for dark fabrics. The chalk markings disappear after five days or after the fabric is washed and ironed.

Wash-out pencils: These are also suitable for dark fabrics and can be erased with a drop of cold water. It looks similar with a regular pencil and the lead is white, pink or light blue.

Vanishing Markers: Ideal for marking fabrics that are light colored and disappears in twelve to twenty-four hours.

Water-Erasable Markers: These are felt-tipped markers used to mark light to medium colored fabrics.

INVISIBLE TRANSPARENT TAPES

These tapes are useful but not important marking tapes. These tapes can be easily seen when placed on fabric because of its cloudy appearance. Removable tapes are ideal in some types of fabrics like corduroy, velvet or velour since the tape doesn't pull of the nap from these types of fabrics.

PIN CUSION AND GLASS HEAD PINS

These are essential things you need for your sewing projects. You need them to pin securely the pattern to the fabric. You can also pin fabrics together before you sew them. Glass-head pins are recommended because they can fit securely in your fingers especially when you pin multiple layers of fabrics. And if you accidentally iron the glass heads, they don' melt like the plastic ones.

It is also important that you have a safe place where you can keep your pins. Glass-head pins are sold in convenient plastic boxes that serve as the pin holders. However, experts say wearing a wrist pincushion is very practical so that the pins stay wherever the sewer goes. Magnetic pincushions are also handy. Aside from pins, other metal objects like the seam ripper or small scissors can stick to the surface that is magnetized.

HAND NEEDLES

When buying hand needles, have the variety pack. This pack provides you most of the needles important for hand-sewing projects. Although variety packs of needles vary from brand to brand, they generally have about ten needles per pack in varied lengths and thickness. Others even have varied sizes of eyes.

NEEDLES FOR SEWING MACHINE

The standard size of a sewing machine needle is size #11 based on American sizing, or #12/80 from European sizing. About eighty percent of the fabrics today are good for these needles. However, if you aren't sure about the size of the needle for a particular fabric, take time to read the Operating Manual of your sewing machine. There are some needles that provide varied types of points, designed to cater to different stitching techniques as well as different fabric types.

SEAM RIPPER

A seam ripper is a type of sewing tool that has a point designed to lifts stitched off the fabric.

"…It is important that you have the right tools for your sewing activities. Start your sewing activities by obtaining the proper dressmaking tools…" Added Romina Abrigo
