I have no idea how I missed this story… but it seems that in the summer ASUS will release a new version of their portable Linux-based system. Now that’s going to be quite a system. Here’s the basic news, some of which was suggested earlier by fans of the first Eee PC:

ASUS has made several innovative improvements with the next generation of the Eee PC – dubbed the Eee PC 900. These new technologies will bring about a brand new concept for Internet access with 1G of memory, larger storage of up to 12GB, and wider 8.9-inch screens. These new Eee PCs will cost 399 Euros each, and will be available in summer this year – to select countries on the first wave of launch. All of these new models will be Windows ready, and will provide users with a chance to enjoy a brand new PC experience while on the go.

The new 1000 is a serious contender for mobile pc of the year… it’s light, affordable, big enough for some serious work, and highly desirable.

From Wikipedia:

It features a new 10 inch screen and an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU. The 1000 model ships with Linux and a 40GB SSD; the 1000H model ships with Windows XP Home and a 80 GB HD. Both the 1000 and the 1000H have 2 GB of DDR RAM. The 1000 has a rated battery life of 4.2-7.5 hours, while the 1000H is rated for 3.2-7 hours. It also offers a keyboard that is 92% the size of generic notebooks, aiming to make it more comfortable to type. Like the Eee PC 901, the new machines feature 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The prices are NT$18,988 (approx. US$625) for the 1000H and NT$19,988 (approx. US$658) for the 1000.

Though the price is creeping towards a lower end notebook, it’s still offering some interesting subtleties, including Linux, SSD, and a fairly decent screen. I would reckon that the 1000 model is probably more robust… and suitable for those who are ‘road warrior’ types!

1. reliability – no hard disk and no CD-ROM to slow things down, break or otherwise cause trouble;

2. OS – no Windows to add 100% to the purchase price, become unstable, or vulnerable to hacks, spyware and viruses;

3. price – so inexpensive that if you dropped it, you wouldn’t cry too many tears!

In some ways it could appear quite limited, but for a device like this that needn’t be a problem! Its storage could be virtually unlimited if you use online services, it’s not just a browser (despite many websites’ taglines) as it includes OpenOffice! And its price? Well, at $200 for a unit, you can’t go far wrong! Let’s see what the early adopters say!

Palm may have trouble with its Foleo product, though! Its price point is much higher!

However, Windows XP was a natural choice: wide driver support, familiar apps, and a huge user base. So Microsoft introducted XP on the netbooks with XP SP2 or 3 depending on when you buy it. To make it a natural choice, the convenience factors are pretty huge: XP has a large support base for drivers, hugely popular applications and an interface that provides familiarity. Taken together, these three advantages do give it a runaway advantage over the nearest competitor.

Drivers: Universally Available for Modern Devices

Whenever you purchase a USB device such as a card reader, a camera, or whatever you need, you just plug the device into the USB socket, and if it doesn’t install immediately, you simply open the CD that came with the device or download the appropriate drivers. Apart from the usual XP niggles when installing hardware, it works pretty much as it should. Over the years, the only problem I have had is installing older devices whose CDs had gone missing. A quick trip to the company download site usually fixes that though.

Apps, Apps, Apps…

For applications, on ASUS Eee PCs with inbuilt Hard drives or SSDs with enough space, you can add your favorite applications such as Microsoft Office, LiveWriter, Picasa,.. The lower power chips mean that some typical tasks such as advanced gaming, movie editing, virtual PCs, and other higher performance computing requirements will be all but impossible. But for most daily purposes, there’s plenty to spare in terms of performance for email, surfing, documents, etc.

XP users come from planet Earth. Guaranteed.

And, the last factor, familiarity brings a huge benefit when users switch to the ASUS Eee PC netbooks. Everything is pretty much in the same place as you’d expect, you can use the installed apps as you would on your home or work PC, and installing your favorite apps is a snap if you use a network drive or a USB key. If you use proprietary software, you may find that you already have enough licenses to cover your netbook with the family packs or corporate cover. Of course, opensource software is available everywhere, and reliable.

So why another OS?

If you are expecting to get lots of work or stuff done on your netbook, or you want something you KNOW how to use, I’d suggest that you don’t buy an ASUS Eee PC running Linux. Why? It’s just not worth the trouble. If you are curious, willing to try or happy to learn, then it might be a good choice for you. Pretty much everything you need is available there, from Office to Media Apps, and ASUS Eee PCs running Linux do provide a simplified task-based interface to help get you started. The learning curve isn’t as steep as it could be.

And Windows Seven?

Windows 7 is already for pre-order and release is still about 8 weeks away. By all accounts, techies running the Windows 7 betas have given good feedback about this version of Windows. I’m not considering upgrading my older PCs or netbooks because none of them will be able to run Windows 7 properly. But if you have bought anything in the past twelve months or would like to check your system, you can courtesy of Microsoft’s download tool. However, if I purchase a new system (as I’m planning to do) I will more than likely ask for Windows 7 as the default install. But that won’t be until 2010 at the earliest.

Hacking your ASUS Eee PC?

There are a bunch of other OSes that you could try out, including a myriad of Linux Versions, some earlier versions of Windows (why?), and there are even a few hackintoshes available (hacked installs of versions of Apple’s software). These versions are really for those who have a driving passion to fiddle with the internals! So unless you have the time, the interest and the skill, I’d leave most of these well alone!

From one OS to another

Nowadays, in the over the counter sales, Linux is pretty much an also-ran, and Windows 7 isn’t released until later in 2009. That just leaves Windows XP and it isn’t such a bad choice at all: Most ASUS Eee PC netbooks now use this as the default, drivers and software are easily available, and it’s familiar to almost everyone.

I’ve only got nine on my list of alternative browsers, but I’m sure I can add more if I just tried. BTW, * indicates I tried it and removed it. ** means that I installed and kept it! I kept over five browsers on my machine right now. The only one I don’t have is Safari. Also, most of these browsers are crossplatform apart from IE and K-Meleon. With all these browsers, why stick with one outdated and outmoded browser?

This is not a review of the ASUS Eee Box series computers, just sharing my own personal experiences, that’s all. I have bought three of these ASUS Eee Ebox PCs (three different models) now, and feel that they are worth the money.

We had to replace three aging computers at our company, so we decided to spend money on buying these devices over about nine months.

And our staff love them for the following reasons:

1. much faster and less problems than the old PCs;
2. small footprint means they can go anywhere easily;
3. quite operation … with three full size PCs running the office space was quite noisy but eliminating three boxes with full-size fans has cut the noise levels a lot;
4. lower power: this has helped us to reduce our electricity bills because of the lower power demands of the CPU and the reduced heat from the units;
5. they are fast to boot up if you don’t load up utilities or apps; and

They aren’t without their own problems, though, such as the fact that they can’t really be repaired well (fortunately there’s only one diskdrive) and upgrading the units is largely impossible should the software require a faster graphics card or whatnot. Also, the devices have four USB slots (2 on the back, and 2 on the front) but with a mouse AND a keyboard to plugin, you’re left with little expansion room if you are using a printer and one other USB device. So get the model with the wireless keyboard and mouse so you don’t have to compromise. It’s a little more expensive, but well worth the less hassle.

Overall, I love the format, the ease and speed of setup. I just wonder if they will support Windows 7 when it comes out! That’d be cool.

Asustek Computer plans to launch an e-book reader under its Eee brand by the end of 2009 at the earliest, according to company president Jerry Shen. The market has lower requirements making it possible to build the machines relatively cheaply. The complexity comes in building the “content delivery platform”. But with Google entering the Book Market, it’s possible that using their Chrome OS and Eee PC hardware, e-Readers could play off the nascent Google e-Book platform and build an entirely new system that outmaneuvers both Sony and Amazon’s ebook platforms! That would be worth seeing.

This article will go through the standard features and explain what they are and why they are useful or not in terms of their connectivity. Many models contain all of these features, but not every model will contain exactly the same specification so check carefully before you plonk down your hard earned cash.

1. Ethernet Connections

This is probably the most universal connector that you will need or have, and an RJ45 connector will plugin to the socket. It is identified on left-side of most netbooks as a slightly larger than a phone socket type slot. It is usually placed right next to the telephone jack.

Not all notebooks include one of these because of the socket size. The most important point is that many hotels, offices and businesses still provide only cable-based Internet access through their network to the Internet. So, if you don’t have one of these connectors, you may find yourself out of luck. I’m usually glad to use a cable, because I’ve found wired networks faster and more secure than wireless networks. On Asus, this is usually referred to as 10/100 Fast Ethernet.

2. Telephone Still Rocks

If you’re stuck in some parts of the world (developed AND developing) you may find that you still need to dial in via 56K modem and telephone line to connect to the Internet. So you will also need a standard telephone jack to connect a telephone line, too. Of course, this also makes faxing (if you have the software) straightforward. If you don’t have a telephone socket, you can still use SkypeFax for making faxes, though perhaps it’s less convenient.

3. Wireless Networks

All netbooks include Wireless connectivity as a standard feature. This makes accessing the Internet or LANs quick and simple. Many of the older netbooks feature dual modes (b/g), but newer models, such as the 1000 series, feature tri-mode connectivity Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n). This n-mode will provide faster access to the network, as well as a more stable experience. So look for a model that supports that network if possible. Not all ASUS Eee PC 1000 series do support n-mode.

4. Bluetooth Devices

These devices are really for mobile phones, etc. My netbook doesn’t support this out of the box, and it is relatively simple to add the function by buying a Bluetooth bud and plugging it into your setup. But why bother when you can just buy the machine already setup. Bluetooth allows you to connect to your mobile devices (phones, earphones, etc.) without an annoying cable, though you will find that Bluetooth access speeds are slow compared to mobile broadband standards. This seems to be a limitation for Bluetooth 2.1. However, it is still useful for uploading/downloading pictures and music and data from your handset.

5. USB slots

Most new ASUS Eee netbooks provide for ample USB slots. I really recommend three USB slots for a number of reasons: 1 slot is for your mobile phone tethered Internet access (always useful), one is for your full-size keyboard/mouse/other, and one is for your data device. It’s pretty easy to use up three slots at one sitting with the devices we now use: MP3s, cameras, card readers, CD/DVD burners, USB keys… why be short?

6. Video Adapter

This is still a very useful adapter socket on many models, because you can connect to an external monitor or projector. You will find the video out useful if you are giving a presentation or have tired eyes or just need a bigger monitor for a delicate task. While VGA connectors are still available, you may find that you need to also stick a converter-jack for the new style monitor jacks that are increasingly common. Otherwise you may not be able to use the monitor. Luckily these are really small.

7. Secure Digital Memory Card Slot

This device is always useful for reading your photographs or other digital media. The ASUS Eee PCs usually provide one MMC/SD(SDHC) card slot for you to stick your cards into. Of course, if you are using a mini-card or large compact flashcard, you will need to use a separate device to connect via USB.

These seven connectivity points are, I think, essential in today’s ASUS Eee PC netbooks models. It would be nice to mobile broadband as an on-board feature, but that hasn’t happened yet on any netbook. Given the rapid deployment of broadband wireless networks, I expect we’ll see this soon on top-end netboooks.

What is the Eee Keyboard? Simply, it’s a computer in a keyboard. Engineers around the world often vie to put computers in weird containers: teddy bears, cars, etc. But this could be the first full PC running Windows that runs in a keyboard AND available on a commercial basis. There’s very little specific information yet on its availability other than a couple of teaser images, an expected image and price of US$400~500. Suggested specs include N280 chip @ 1.66Ghz and 1GB of RAM. Other specs seem to be: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, the wireless HDMI, HDMI, three USB, VGA and audio I/O.

Given the base specs, it’s intended to connect your media together as well as run as a full PC. And it’s a snazzy looking machine that, in purpose reminds me of the Commodore Vic’s series or BBC Computers from the 80′s. But the brushed metal look is very attractive.

And getting rid of those big boxes (esp. older pcs doing humdrum tasks) by upgrading them to these could bring a lot of benefits to my office space. Would you consider this machine?
