Apart from great surprise resulting form very fast delivery, the asus laptop battery is (so far) very good. Few things are more annoying than the battery low alert popping up on your laptop when you least expect it. Funny how it always happens at the worst possible time - in the middle of finishing an important document for instance or perhaps while booking those airline tickets online for your winter sun. To avoid this annoyance, read on for five ways to extend your laptop's battery life.

Tip 1: Lower the brightness
The most effective way to reduce the rate of your battery's power consumption is to lower the brightness of your laptop's screen. This is usually done via a dedicated button or the Function Key (Fn Key) which doubles up as a brightness button when holding the arrow keys.
Brightness buttons will be marked with a sun icon. To lower your screen's brightness, you'll need to press the button with a down arrow repeatedly, which will usually be next to the sun icon button.

Tip 2: Switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Another way to save power is to switch the Wi-Fi off when you're not using it, as leaving your connection on can sap Dell Latitude E4300 battery life. As with brightness controls, most laptops have a dedicated switch or a Fn Key that can be used to disable or enable the wi-fi. Windows 7 and Vista lets you run useful mini-programs called Gadgets, such as weather tickers, directly from the desktop. Shutting them down can help your laptop battery last longer. In Windows Vista, right-click anywhere in the Sidebar (usually on the right of the screen) and select Close Sidebar. In Windows 7, close individual Gadgets by moving your mouse over a gadget and click the X that appears. To reinstate your Gadgets in Vista, right click the Sidebar icon in the Notification Area and select Open. In Windows 7, right-click the desktop and select Gadgets, then drag and drop them onto your desktop.

This battery was received quickly and has been discharging and recharging perfectly for the past month. I was worried that it might not fit well in my 3-year-old 13" A1181 white MacBook, but that has been no problem. The original apple laptop battery was still charging at 100% after 3 three years, but it had swelled up and would press on the touchpad mechanism, causing all sorts of problems. I can't predict the future, but after a month, the product deserves 5 stars.

I got this Asus Eee PC 1015 Battery to give me at least 3 hrs of heavy load runtime. Enough to handle major hub to major hub air travel. Chicago/NY/Atlanta to Korea might stretch it(14hrs) tho. Basically the 63WH battery has a higher open circuit voltage than the 56WH battery. Any how, delivery was fast, and actually beat the projected delivery estimate. Outstanding!

I bought this item a few weeks ago. Standard shipping took only a few days. Battery performs much better than the factory model from Dell. I followed instructions included with the battery in order to "calibrate" it. It just involves charging fully and discharging fully 4 or 5 times. I have purchased 2 of these NX6120 batteries. They work exactly the same as the original hp compaq laptop batteries with one exception, they don't last as long as the originals. The first battery lasted for approximately one year. That's pretty good considering the very reasonable price.

Linux maintain a set of files system date meta data including ‘atime’ that shows the last time a file was used. Although this feature is very useful to system administrator, keeping track of ‘atime’ forces our laptop to a write to the disk every time a file is accessed increasing energy consumption from the battery.

Setting Relatime

We can disable the ‘atime’ to reduce disk write at the cost of breaking software that relies on ‘atime’. Linux Kernel 2.6.20 and above should support the ‘relatime’ option

Some hard disk manufacturer build power saving options into their hardware so that we can reduce the energy that our hard disk consume. We can only turn on this power saving option when we see AdvancedPM=yes after executing the following command in the console:

We can enable power saving mode using the hdparm command, for example:

hdparm -B 1 -S 12 /dev/sda

Enable Laptop Mode

We can save our battery energy life by turning on Linux’s laptop mode so that Linux reduce I/O operation when our laptop is under low power. Not every hardware comes with a laptop mode so we need to check whether our hardware supports laptop mode by executing the following command:

sudo gedit /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode

If you find that the value in the laptop_mode text file is 0 it means that the laptop mode is disabled. Just set it to 5 from gedit and save the file to enable the laptop mode.

Success in battery innovation would be in reducing costs and weight to increase performance, an expert has said.

"The next big thing is to successfully reduce the cost in camcorder batteries and a reduction in the amount of time to charge," CSIR manager of the energy and processes and conference chair Dr Mkulu Mathe told News24 at the International Battery Association conference in Cape Town.

You might be forgiven for thinking the HTC Desire Z is the misunderstood second cousin in the HTC litter. When the Taiwanese manufacturer already has the Desire, the Desire HD, the Desire S and more, it’s hard to get your head around just why you should care about the Desire Z. But the Desire Z truly offers something the other models don't -- a physical keyboard. Is it enough to help the handset shake its family competitors off and pave a path of its very own through life?

The Desire Z fits squarely into what we are rapidly coming to know as HTC’s mobile phone design ethos. The handset is composed of black, silver and grey interlocking pieces, with some sections appearing to be hard plastic and some appearing to be aluminium.

Like the original HTC Desire – released in Australia in April 2010 – the Desire Z has five front-facing buttons underneath its brightly lit touchscreen – the standard Android home, menu, return and search buttons. Unlike the original Desire, these buttons are not physical but are embedded in the phone’s screen – they’re touch-sensitive and vibrate by default when you touch them.

There is also a larger button which is directionally sensitive and can be used to navigate around the phone’s interface if you don’t like touching its screen. Around the sides of the Desire Z are the sort of ports and buttons you would expect – volume controls and USB port on the left, camera button on the bottom right (the right spot if you’re holding the phone horizontally to take a shot) and a 3.5mm headphone jack and power/wake up button on the top.

The dm1z, like the smallest MacBook Air, has an 11.6-inch screen, though it weighs over a pound more at 3.5 pounds. That's still pretty light. But it won't match thinness of the Air, which is 0.11 inches at its thinnest point. The HP is 0.8 inches at its thinnest point.

But there are other goodies that compare favorably to the Air. A roomy 320GB hard disk drive (7200RPM), 3GB of memory, more ports, and the option for built-in 3G from Verizon, AT&T or Sprint.

But the comparison with the MBA falters a bit in some crucial areas. The dm1z is not constructed from aluminum like the Air and aesthetically doesn't offer the elegance of the MBA.

Inside the dm1z taps Advanced Micro Devices' latest dual-core E-350 processor (1.6GHz, 1MB L2 Cache with AMD Radeon HD 6310M graphics). These new AMD chips--replete with a solid graphics processor--handily beat Intel's Netbook-class Atom processors but are not necessarily faster than the silicon used in the MacBook Air. The Air pairs Intel's Core 2 Duo processor with an Nvidia chipset that also delivers good graphics performance for an ultraportable.

And returning to the $999 MacBook Air, in addition to the specs mentioned above, you get a 64GB solid-state drive and 2GB of memory.

Laptop Battery life between the two seems comparable. Of course, that depends on what you're doing with the devices, but both exceed five hours, according to most reviews.

No, it's not a MacBook Air. But then again you're saving $600 for a respectable ultraportable--while the coupons last.

This was one of the first Sandy Bridge systems we have had a chance to use and we wanted to test out the integrated graphics so we loaded up Just Cause 2 and were surprised to find a playable game on medium settings. The keyboard is, like on all ThinkPads, really great with a nice feel and layout of keys, but the mouse stole the show on the x220. It’s not that the mousepad si perfect, but it is 45% larger than the x201 and is a clickable surface so you can click anywhere on the upper portion for a left click, much like on a MacBook. The integrated buttons are curved at the base to fit the lid’s slight curve and delivers a passable two finger scroll.

The ThinkPad X220′s battery life, with the optional 19-cell slice battery, was also impressive. When we combined the standard 6-cell battery with the $179 slice battery, we were able to get 15 hours of battery life while surfing the web. The standard 6-cell was able to get just under 8 hours of battery life. If you opt for the 9 cell battery and 19-cell slice battery you can reportedly achieve 20 hours of real world use.
