Celtic Torc Bangle

I've now reached the age when all around me seem to be retiring. I look around with envy at those who can afford to go on cruises or exotic holidays while they're still fit enough to do it. ... Well, maybe I really don't want to go skidiving or bungee jumping nowadays, LOL.

The really nice thing, though, about folks retiring is that they sometimes surprise me and decide to buy a good piece of jewellery to commemorate the occasion. That happened recently when a friend ordered a magnificent Celtic Torc Bangle. Looking at the piece again with its lovely Celtic finials and with 4-strands of silver wound together into the bangle, I realised again just how substantial a piece of jewellery this is. Knowing her partner, I also know that this is the ideal gift for him because it looks very masculine, isn't too fancy, and exudes the quality I know that he will appreciate. I'm so looking forward to hearing the comments from him :).

The torc is made in Scotland, hallmarked in Edinburgh and is supplied with a lovely presentation box.

Scottish Celtic love jewelry is most commonly seen in the form of a wedding band. People of Celtic descent favor this type of ring because it gives them a chance to display their love and affection for the partner in a way that highlights their Celtic heritage. Celtic love symbols are often preserved in jewelry and are perfectly displayed in this manner.

Rings and things

Quite often Celtic wedding rings display beautiful knot work. Celtic knots symbolize no beginning and no endings and because of this eternal circle, this type of ring is the ultimate symbol of a love. The knots in a wedding ring are crossed and interwoven which reflects how the couple will be entwined throughout their lives together.

Classic Celtic love knot patterns in rings can be found in silver or gold and feature the Gaelic phrase "mo Ghaol Ort' which means 'my love with you'. The unique and utterly Celtic statement makes this ring extremely popular and can be worn by both bride and groom, and even as a token of deep friendship or love.

Irish in its origin the Claddagh ring is popular among Scottish Celts in love. The Claddagh is designed with two hands clasping a heart. The heart is topped with a crown.

The legend of the Claddagh is that a young goldsmith made one for his beloved as a promise of marriage. But he was kidnapped before he could present it to her and forced aboard a pirate ship. She refused to believe that he was dead and waited five long years for him. He later escaped, made his fortune and married her.

The Claddagh represents ever lasting commitment. The hands offer up a heart and the crown is a symbol of love. The Claddagh can be used discreetly. If the heart is facing downwards it signifies that the wearer is single. If the heart is facing upwards toward the body, it signifies that the wearer has given her heart to someone.

The Luckenbooth

The Luckenbooth is pure Scottish and takes the form of a brooch. There were two styles of Luckenbooth brooches. The first was a incised decorated ring brooch which was used by men and women to fasten their plaids and this was called a Penanular. The other was a heart shaped brooch that was given at weddings and engagements by a lover to his object of affection.

They are a Scottish symbol for love, given as a token of affection, friendship or love. They are also said to symbolise loyalty. They are one of the most romantic traditions of Scottish history and were given by the groom to the would-be bride to be pinned to her wedding dress on the day.

These brooches were worn as a protection against evil and from the attention of the fairies from 1800AD onwards, the heart was small and was surmounted by a crown. They were plain and undecorated and were usually crafted out of silver. This is the most famous form of the Luckenbooth brooch. The name comes from the Luckenbooth which was a small 'locking booth' which were a feature of Edinburgh's Royal Mile. They were tiny and could be securely locked up at night allowing traders to leave their wares behind.

Traditionally they were given by a man to his sweetheart on their engagement, but they also acted as a lucky charm. They were said to ease the pain of childbirth and would ensure a steady supply of milk if pinned to the petticoat. If pinned to a baby's shawl, it was said that they would protect the child from being stolen away in the night by fairies.

They slowly became larger and more elaborate, allowing for inscriptions on the back such as a couple's initials or a special date or even message. From 1850 the Luckenbooth hearts became intertwined and began resembling the letter 'M'. Thistle fleur de lys were added and were later called Mary's Brooches after Mary Queen of Scots husband presented her with one.

Today they form two hearts topped with a crown and some can even be found set with garnets as garnets have a reputation for being lucky in the affairs of the heart as well as symbolizing consistency in a relationship as well as deep friendship.

Celtic Symbols - Meaning and Use

The meaning of Celtic symbols is not always easy to determine. There are few, if any written records detailing the meanings. Many of the meanings have been added in recent times and the original meaning is unknown.

It has been identified that 8 basic knots form the basis for all other Celtic knots. No evidence has been found to tie any of these knots to a religious or philosophical meaning. At some point Wicca cultures adopted various knots and attached meanings of their choice to the knots, but these meanings hadn't existed before. The only possible significance as to the meaning of the knots probably lies in displaying how capable humans are of intricate artwork. That in itself may have been a tribute to a higher being.

The Triquetra is a popular Celtic symbol. It really only means "triangle" and refers to any Celtic three cornered shape. Commonly it is seen as three long interconnecting loops with one circle that goes through the middle of each. It has been found on early stones in Germanic pagan areas and apparently had some "religious" meaning, now lost, but may have been associated with the Germanic God Oden. The meaning to the Celts is uncertain, but is used a lot in most of their early art work. Eventually Christians used the symbol to refer to the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost). Various modern pagan groups use the Triquetra to symbolize elements of their faith, such as land, water and sky or as the symbol of their connection to the ancient Celts.

The spiral is one of the most common Celtic symbols. There is no written record of the first meaning, but the symbol appears nearly everywhere in ancient Celtic and other pagan drawings, dwellings, caves and tombs. It is thought to be a tribute to the sun, which makes a spiral shape in the sky every three months in its precession or a tribute to the possible endless cycle of life (birth, death and rebirth). Today it is the symbol Wicca's use as a spirit emblem of their goddess.

Triskeles are one of the most commonly seen symbols. It is three spirals in a triangular arrangement connected by one continuous line. Different meanings have been attributed to this symbol. But since it appears a lot on tombs it was thought to stand for birth, life and reincarnation, or the sun, afterlife and reincarnation. It possibly has similar meanings to the Triquetra. Many have claimed that if the Triquetra stands for the 3-month sun cycle than the Triskele stands for 9-months of pregnancy!

The Celtic Tree of Life can be depicted in several ways but carries the similarity of resembling a tree. Trees were seen as sacred to the ancient Celts. It provided fuel, shelter and food! Life itself was seen possible because of trees, thus the "Tree of Life". Trees were associated with the supernatural world as well. They were connected to the world of the spirits and seen as doorways to the spirit world, especially the Oak. Trees were thought to carry messages to the "other realm". Trees, with their roots in the ground and branches in the air, were seen as a connection between realms.

New Celtic Charm

We have been selling Celtic Jewellery since 1989 - some gold, some silver and quite a lot of pewter. After all that time, you'd think that we'd run out of new jewellery designs, but this quite simply isn't so. There are so many talented designers out there who create new work which is derived from the priciples of Celtic knotwork - and this is the latest pendant to be featured in our store.

Product Information
St. Clement's Church, Rodel, Harris is closely related to the Augustinian nunnery on Iona, a female effigy (known as sheela na gigs) can be found on the South of the Church with a "sister" found in the outer wall on Iona. St. Clement's is a treasure trove of late medieval masonry with several fine examples to be found on it's exterior walls. The Church is dedicated to St. Clement, the 3rd bishop of Rome (after St. Peter) who was martyred in AD 90. It is suspected that the church was commissioned by Alexander MacLeod of Dunvegan.
