At a factory in southeast Nigeria, dozens of new white buses stand at the end of the production line, apparently ready to take on some of Africa’s toughest roads.

Unfortunately for Nigeria’s main domestic vehicle assembly firm, they are going nowhere for now.

In an economy starved of dollars because of the slump in oil prices, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) cannot buy imported components, leaving the buses without engines – a metaphor for the problems afflicting Africa’s most populous nation - Nigeria.

GDP figures on Wednesday confirmed that the continent’s biggest economy slid into its first recession in 25 years in the second quarter, shrinking by 2.06 percent after a 0.36 percent contraction in the first three months of the year.

The poor state of the manufacturing sector in particular is a blow to President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been pushing hard to wean Nigeria off its dependence on crude oil sales, which make up 70 percent of government revenues.

At IVM, whose products are intended to show Nigeria can export more than oil, workers have already been sent home because of a lack of parts from Japan, China and Germany, which account for much of the content of the vehicles they produce.

Production had stopped “as we are waiting for the imported items for which there is a forex issue,” chairman Innocent Chukwuma said at the firm’s plant at Nnewi, in southern Nigeria.

Launched in 2010, IVM last year raised its annual production target for 2016 from 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles due to a “Made in Nigeria” campaign that generated strong sales to the police, state agencies and churches.

Those ambitions are now looking shaky if promises of government assistance fail to materialise, Chukwuma said.

“I believe they are doing something but if they can’t do anything we’ll lay off some workers,” Chukwuma said.

“JAPAN OF AFRICA”
Nigeria’s foreign currency reserves were more than $31 billion a year ago but dropped to below $26 billion this month as the central bank stepped up its dollar sales to try to address the widespread foreign exchange shortage.

A 40 percent devaluation of the naira in June was meant to resolve that shortage by encouraging delayed inward investment and opening up the currency market.

But trade on the official market remains thin, with many of the available dollars finding their way to the black market, where they are sold at a premium of 40 percent.

For a country that imports everything from machines to milk the impact is huge.

In the southeastern city of Aba – known as the “Japan of Africa” until the 1970s – more than 2,000 shoemakers have shut because they cannot pay for imported glue or synthetic leather, whose prices has surged due to the black market dollar rate.

“We are just managing,” said Uche Okeke, who used to make 1,000 pairs of women’s shoes a month before the price of glue quadrupled, forcing him to nearly halve production and lay off half his staff.

With the inflated input costs, consumers in neighbouring Cameroon, who used to buy most of Aba’s shoes, are now opting for cheaper Chinese footwear.

Until recently, three trucks laden with shoes and bags left the city for Cameroon every week. Now it is one every fortnight, traders at the city’s almost deserted motor park said.

Government officials point to a sizeable investment this year by U.S. drinks giant Coca Cola in local juice and dairy firm Chi Ltd as evidence of a turnaround in Nigeria's fortunes, but business people say promises of government support fail to materialise.

Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun said earlier this month that exporters should get tax breaks, another item in a list of proposals that have yet to make it into law.

A government source said last week that Buhari wanted parliament to grant him extra powers to speed up plans such as easing visa restrictions for potential investors.

The government under Buhari has spent 400 billion naira ($1.2 billion) on building roads or improving the power supply but that has had little impact in a country of 190 million that has suffered decades of mismanagement.

The main roads around Aba - whose shoes are said to have rivalled even Italian footwear in the decade after independence - are littered with pot-holes and in some parts are little more than dirt tracks.

"We are tired of hearing about support from the federal government. We read about it in the newspapers, hear it on television and radio. But it's just talk," said Goodluck Nmeri, head of the 6,000-strong shoemakers' association in Aba.

Crossover-Based Hyundai Santa Cruz Truck Deemed Too Soft for Australia: Report

If you were hoping to get behind the wheel of Hyundai’s upcoming Santa Cruz mini-truck, we hope you’re not an Aussie. According to a report from Motoring, Hyundai deemed the soft, crossover-based Santa Cruz not suitable for the Australian market.

Hyundai Australia COO Scott Grant confirmed to Motoring that the tiny truck will not see duty in Oz, claiming the Santa Cruz is not up to the task of dealing with those who use trucks in the rugged areas of Australia. “The Santa Cruz is not in any way suitable for Australia, therefore it is not even being considered for this market,” Grant told Motoring. “From our point of view we want a proper HiLux, Ranger, Navara type of product, and the Santa Cruz won’t work for us. It’s too small and lightweight. We just don’t think it’d sell – Australian consumers won’t go for it.”

It’s not hard to see why Hyundai Australia is unconvinced on the Santa Cruz. The compact truck will ride on a compact crossover platform, putting it squarely in a league of its own. Where the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado ride on tough bespoke truck chassis, with rugged body-on-frame construction, the Hyundai will have a softer, less-capable unibody construction, putting it more in-line with the Honda Ridgeline than anything else.

It might not have the off-road and hauling capability of its larger rivals, but the Santa Cruz aims to be a usable, affordable truck without any of the drawbacks associated with cumbersome body-on-frame models, including improved fuel economy, comfort, and on-road manners.

Toyota Chief Engineer Wants Supra Name for Joint Sports Car

There’s no question Toyota is jointly developing a new sports car with BMW. There is some uncertainty, however, about what it will be called. Many would like to see the Toyota Supra name return to the lineup, including Toyota’s own chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.

In an interview with CarAdvice, Tada said, “I love the Supra and I love the Supra name.”

The global engineering chief and father of the Toyota 86 continued, “It’s historically important to Toyota. We’re pushing for the name Supra for the new car we are developing with BMW.”

We know that Toyota at least wants to reserve the Supra name as a possibility, as the company recently filed a trademark application for the nameplate in Europe. The Toyota FT-1 concept of 2014 is believed to preview the next-gen Supra, despite not being badged as such.

As we’ve reported previously, the partnership between BMW and Toyota will yield a successor to the BMW Z4 (believed to be named Z5) and a new Toyota sports car. The cars will share a platform, but the drivetrains could be unique. According to Tada, the joint sports car development is going smoothly.

“I’d say the partnership is going well, very smooth,” Tada said. “We’re testing all over the world too, not just Fuji or Nürburgring, but all [around] the world.”

We haven’t caught a Supra prototype testing in the wild yet, but we have seen the BMW version. The Z5 will ditch the retractable hardtop in favor of a lighter softtop. Drivetrain options aren’t yet known, but we expect both turbocharged four- and six-cylinders to be available. No engine details were given when the FT-1 concept debuted two years ago, but a hybrid drivetrain has been rumored.

Honda Looks to the Revamped Acura NSX to Fire Up Its Brand

With its aggressive design and six-figure price tag, Honda Motor’s revamped NSX is a far cry from its “cheap and cheerful” Civic sedans, but the automaker is betting the sports car launched in Japan on Thursday will turbo-charge its brand image.

The new NSX, jointly developed by Honda’s HMC 0.07% U.S. and Japanese engineers and produced in the United States, marks the revival of the model after the automaker stopped production of the “Asian Ferrari” in 2005. First launched in the 1990s, the model redefined the supercar genre by marrying a high-performance sportscar with everyday driveability.

Starting at 23.7 million yen ($236,621.41), the bespoke hybrid model becomes available to order in Japan on Thursday, having launched in the United States earlier this year. It will also be sold in Canada, China, Europe and other regions.

“Generating profit from the NSX may be a struggle, but by focussing on both functional cars and also advanced performance we will raise the Honda brand,” Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said at the launch.

Marketed under the Acura badge, Honda’s stalled premium brand in the United States, China and other regions, the NSX marks the latest effort by the Japanese automaker to reclaim its reputation as a leader in innovation and engineering after a spell of sluggish sales due in part to “play-it-safe” designs.

Honda beefed up the model with a hybrid powertrain consisting of three electric motors and a twin-turbo V-6 engine approaching the power of a Ferrari.

Encased in an aluminum body and a space frame consisting of aluminum, ultra-high strength steel and other lightweight materials, executive engineer and NSX project co-leader Ted Klaus said the NSX marked a turnaround in the company’s engineering direction, which had begun to “narrow.”

“We’ve really woken up and realized that Honda has to make a Honda product. A Honda product … can’t just be a mental or physical thing, it has to be emotional,” he said.

Analysts said its advanced engineering and technology would help to change Honda’s image.

“Once upon a time ‘Honda’ was synonymous with ‘performance’. Now Honda is known for reliability, for sensibility,” CLSA analyst Chris Richter said.

“(The new NSX) is an attempt to redefine Honda and regain some of the excitement about driving.”

KEY TO US

Just five of the sportscars are produced each day at a specialized manufacturing plant in Ohio.

Honda has initial plans to produce only about 800 of the cars for North America in the first year of production, and about 100 for Japan.

The automaker has been revamping its existing line-up to win back combined market share for Honda and Acura in North America, which has slipped below 10% in the past few years. North America is a key market for the automaker, accounting for more than one-third of global vehicle sales.

To push the vehicle’s “green” status to another level, the Prime equips an 8.8kWh battery pack that can be charged at home in about 5.5 hours with no special equipment. With a 240V source, charging takes less than half that time. This offers an all-electric range of 22 miles, but with the 11.3-gallon fuel tank filled to the brim, Toyota anticipates the Prime will be able to travel more than 600 miles without stopping. Better yet, the sharply-styled four door will be able to cruise at 84 mph without leaving EV mode. Silent freeway cruising, anyone?

Compared to the last generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid, the Prius Prime has double the electric range and is expected to receive a 120 MPGe rating – a 26 percent improvement. An improved powertrain is just the tip of the iceberg though, because the vehicle’s interior has been significantly upgraded over the standard offering. A Tesla-style 11.6-inch HD touchscreen is the centerpiece of the premium cabin, and it comes standard with navigation and offers a variety of eco-centric apps. In addition, a full color head-up display is available as an option. Toyota engineers also worked hard on making the 2017 Prius Prime as light and aerodynamic as possible, with a lower stance, automatic grille shutters and aero glass panel. Weight was saved by using aluminum for the hood and carbon fiber for the rear hatch, which also makes opening and closing it nearly effortless.

In terms of accident mitigation and occupant safety, the Prime offers Toyota’s full Safety Sense suite, which includes Pedestrian Detection with Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, a Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Pricing data is still under wraps at the time of this writing, but that information should be released closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date in late fall.

The Difference Between 4Wheel Drive SUV's and All Wheel Drive Vehicles

Despite the increasing number of online resources and shifting dealer strategies, car shopping is still a bother. Add in all the new car segments, vehicle features, and technology acronyms, and the process becomes truly daunting.

There’s a long list of confusing topics when finding the right car, but all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) seem to consistently confound salespeople and car shoppers alike. Often, these terms are used interchangeably, but are they really the same? In the motoring world, they actually refer to very different systems, which can produce radically different results. But let’s get to the point: how does 4WD or AWD impact your daily driving life, and which badge belongs on your car?

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)

Lets start with the old-school version. 4WD, sometimes also referred to as Four by Four, or 4×4, is typically used on off-road vehicles – or at least vehicles with all-terrain capabilities.

Unfortunately, 4WD doesn’t fit neatly in a one-sentence explanation, but we’ll stick to the basics here.

Power goes from the transmission to what is known as a transfer case. This system then splits power between the front and rear axles so that maximum torque is going to each wheel. This power delivery process is nothing new, and still manages to propel modern Jeeps over, well, just about anything, but it does have some issues.

When the transfer case splits power evenly, it ensures that each wheel turns at the same speed. This is deeply problematic when doing things like turning. You see, for a car to make a turn, the inside wheel has to turn more slowly than the outside wheel, which is covering more ground. If the vehicle can’t do this, the inside wheel loses traction and it spins freely. This, as you might be able to guess, isn’t great for moving forward efficiently.

There are a couple of ways that modern 4WD systems get around this. For starters, most modern 4WD systems are only on when you activate them. This can be done electronically or by using that protruding lever that sits somewhere between your radio and the center console. That way, you can use 4WD at low speed in snow or mud, but enjoy the drivability of two-wheel drive in normal conditions. When left in 2WD, there are fewer moving parts, and therefore fewer restrictions to forward motion. Said a different way, you’ll save fuel when don’t need to engage 4WD.

The other, more refined 4WD systems are activated with buttons or switches, rather than a manual lever, and include multiple settings for the 4WD system. These systems usually have a 4WD ‘High’, which splits power less evenly and allows what’s called ‘limited slip’ between the inside and outside wheels. This corrects the locked, spinning inside wheel problem to a point. Typically, however, High 4WD is recommended only up to around 60 mph. Flip these into ‘Low’, and they act much the same as old, locked systems. You really don’t want to try moving quickly in 4WD Low…things start breaking.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)

All-Wheel Drive is a much more recent innovation, and, as you might expect, much more complicated. It crops up on everything from supercars like the Audi R8 to grocery-getters like the Buick Encore.

In fact, a good rule of thumb might be to think of AWD as the “car” system while 4WD is the “truck” system. In this rule, consider crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Mazda CX-3, etc. to fall under the “car” category while SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Toyota 4Runner fall under the “truck” category. To better understand the differences between crossovers and SUVs, check out this article.

The biggest difference between 4WD and AWD is that an AWD drive system is on all the time. Well, mostly. But we’ll get to that, as there are two types of all-wheel drive: mechanical and electronic.

The most common way of accomplishing a capable, mechanical AWD system is by using three differentials. A differential is a box of gears, a.k.a. engineering magic, that can take power from the transmission and split it at different levels between two wheels or the front and rear axles (four wheels).

In AWD, this system works to get power to the wheels with the most traction by splitting power between the front and rear axels on the center differential, and the individual wheels by way of the front and rear differentials.

This is useful either in slippery conditions when different wheels might be getting different amounts of grip from moment to moment. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is a perfect example. It is now sold only in AWD in the United States because its power can overwhelm the traction of the rear wheels alone. But even when we aren’t talking about 500+ horsepower cars, splitting power evenly means added stability in all types of weather.

AWD isn’t quite as robust as 4WD and it can’t match the same levels of traction in extremely low-speed off-roading that the older 4WD systems provide. But AWD does have some clear advantages.

The pioneer and industry standard for AWD systems, Audi Quattro, distributed torque mechanically. Quattro allowed Audi to dominate rallying for nearly a decade in the 1980s, but heaven help you and your bank account if it went wrong.

These days, computers are involved in most AWD systems. Sensors on each wheel monitor traction, wheel speed, and several other data points hundreds of times a second. An ECU (engine control unit) dictates where power is sent and to which individual wheel depending on whichever has the most grip.

This type of system, usually called torque vectoring, appears on everything from the Subaru WRX to the Dodge Charger these days. Torque vectoring has allowed massive improvements in handling and all-weather capability.

SO WHICH DO I WANT?

As the pros and cons show, your four-wheel drive system decision depends on what you need the system for. Again, I’ll bring up that Crossover vs. SUV debate, because it probably addresses the two types of vehicles you’re shopping right now.

If you plan on using your vehicle off-road often, 4WD is definitely the best bet. 4WD appears on pickups and truck-platform SUVs that have the durability to match the ruggedness of a 4WD system. For most people, however, AWD makes more sense.

In the sort of winter road conditions that most drivers experience, it’s nice to have a drivetrain, like a modern AWD system, that responds instantly without the driver having to toggle any switches. In addition, most vehicles featuring AWD tend to have better weight distribution, which also aids in traction (and performance).

The reality is that for many drivers, you don’t need either. If you live in an area that doesn’t get real wintery weather, you probably would only notice the difference a couple of times a year, and in many cases, your best bet is a good set of winter tires. Seriously. Tires can do far more than AWD or 4WD on all-season or summer rubber.

LOVELY - Innoson Unveils its Brand of "Made in Nigeria Cars".

When Nigeria, on October 3, 2013, announced the introduction of a new automotive policy aimed at discouraging the importation of wholly assembled automobile and encouraging local manufacturing, it seemed like a tall dream. Innoson Motors, an indigenous company, last week, unveiled a new brand of vehicles, building on local assembly successes by Hyundai and Nissan.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited founded by Nigerian industrialist, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, unveiled its new cars – IVM Umu, IVM Umu and IVM Uzo- manufactured at the company’s Nnewi plant in Anambra State, South east Nigeria.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Future Plan

70 percent of the parts used in building the cars were locally sourced, heralding the emergence of a local car manufacturing industry that will, in the nearest future, serve the region. Already, the company has disclosed it plans to take its brand to neighbours in West Africa, with the Republic of Benin and Ghana on its radar. The company had earlier impressed with its trucks and buses.

Innoson Ventures Motors - Road Safety Truck

The range of Innoson vehicles is already enjoying patronage locally, unlike in the past when indigenous manufacturers were stifled by the lack of appreciation of their products. Across Africa, locally-made goods are beginning to earn respect and desired patronage through quality assurance and competitive pricing.

Former governor of Nigeria’s Anambra State, where the Innoson plant is located, Peter Obi had become a frequent buyer of the locally made vehicles by the time he left office. Founder of the car-making company, Chukwuma, said Obi still patronizes his company.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is expected to soon take delivery of Pickups made by Innoson.

The country’s minister of trade and investment, Olusegun Aganga, at the event held in Nnewi, commended IVM for producing the first Nigeria-made vehicles. He said such an investment is necessary to expand the country’s manufacturing frontiers.

21 auto-companies have already signed commitments with technical partners to set up local assembly operations, according to Nigeria’s National Automotive Council (NAC).

Oil lubrication is vital to vehicle engine system such that it provides a barrier between rotating engine parts to prevent damage by friction, damage which can result in huge auto repair bills. The engine lubrication system includes the oil pump, oil filter, lubricating oil and the oil passages. The engine oil provides a method of cooling engine parts that are not cooled by the engine cooling system. Engine oil helps to protect engine components from corrosion by neutralizing harmful chemicals that are the by-product of combustion.

To protect moving parts and reduce friction, automotive engine oil provides a barrier between the rotating or moving engine components. Ideally, a film of oil should exist between moving components. This is called full film lubrication. In order to achieve full film lubrication, a constant supply of clean oil is required. The engine oil system constantly filters and circulates engine oil to ensure that all components are protected.

The engine oil is stored in the crankcase. Most engines hold between 4 to 6 quarts of oil. The engine oil pump pressurizes and circulates the engine oil.

The oil will flow from the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER, where it is cleaned. The cleaned engine oil then moves through passages, into the CRANKSHAFT where it circulates through the engine bearings. The crankshaft has passages bored into it that allows oil to travel to all the bearing surfaces. The CYLINDER WALLS and PISTONS are lubricated by the oil that is thrown from the CRANKSHAFT as it rotates. This is sometimes referred to as SPLASH LUBRICATION.

Engine oil will leave the CRANKSHAFT, usually at a passage in one of the main bearings and is fed to the CAMSHAFT and LIFTERS. On some overhead valve engines, oil will travel through the PUSHRODS up to the VALVE TRAIN to lubricate the rocker arms. Other designs use a passage to feed oil through a ROCKER ARM shaft to achieve the same purpose. The oil then returns to the CRANKCASE by return holes in the cylinder heads. It is then picked up by the OIL PUMP to be circulated again.

This process is more or less like a circular form ::> From the OIL PUMP to the OIL FILTER to the CRANKSHAFT to the CAMSHAFT/LIFTERS to the VALVE TRAIN to the CRANKCASE then back to the OIL PUMP.

AUTO MAINTENANCE: Car Engine Consuming Too Much Oil -- Resolved

COMMON CAUSES
The most common reason for the consumption of engine oil is worn valve guides, usually the exhaust guides or worn piston rings. If you change your engines oil every 3,000 miles, running a 1/2 quart low on oil at the time of oil change can be normal.

The engines oil in car engines provides lubrication to critical moving parts within the engine. Some of these parts are the rings and valve guides, require moderate lubrication. It also keeps the oil from entering the combustion chamber.

If these parts wear, too much clearance between the mating surfaces will exist and will allow the oil to enter the combustion chamber where it will be burnt and exhausted out of the tail pipe.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE

- Run the engine for several minutes at idle.

- Turn the engine off and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

- Restart the engine and immediately increase the engine speed while you observe the exhaust.

If a heavy billow of bluish smoke is exhausted then disappears and the exhaust remains relatively clean, the most likely cause is excessive valve guide wear.

In this case, the valve guides or valve guide seals require service.

If the above test only produces mild smoke and the smoke remains at the same level during all operating conditions, the piston rings will have to be tested.

This is done by performing a compression test on the engine. The first test is referred to as a “dry test” and the second test is referred to as a “wet test”.

The dry test consists of measuring the engines compression using a compression tester installed in the spark plug hole and the ignition system disabled. The engine is then cranked and the pressure is measured and recorded. A few teaspoons full of oil is then poured into the spark plug hole and the compression is then measured again. If the reading increases more than 15 PSI, the rings are worn and major engine service is probably required.

PRECAUTION, TIPS AND NOTES
Use caution when working around hot or rotating engine parts. Compression testers are available at most auto parts stores. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for proper useage.

When performing a compression test it is critical that the ignition system be disabled to prevent the engine from starting. This is usually done by connecting a wire to each of the spark plug wires to a good engine ground away from your work area. Refer to a manufacturers specific service manual for proper testing procedures.

Early last month Nissan Automobile Company announces the release of a new product sedan car called Lannia in China. A month later the sedan car was unveiled in the Beijing Motor Show.

Nissan showed off a stylish new concept car to the assembled crowds of media at the Beijing Motor Show. The Lannia Concept is... well, it's not that easy to describe. It's kind of a sedan, only it looks a bit like a fastback from the rear. But for a twist, it has an ever-so-small rear deck. Regardless of how we'd classify it, it's a seriously sharp piece of styling, thanks to its unique shape and flowing character lines.
If the Lannia's styling appears familiar, it's because we've sort of seen it before. There's more than a little bit of inspiration from the Friend-Me Concept. The Lannia's overall shape is similar to the Friend-Me, while both the front and rear clips look decidedly more production ready. Considering this evolution, we shouldn't rule out a production Lannia in the next few years. And if Nissan's product boss, Andy Palmer is any indication, the new model might not be limited to China.
"It was designed by Chinese, built by Chinese for the Chinese people, and ultimately, for the world," Palmer said in a statement. If Nissan can keep this sharp styling, this could prove a compelling buy in a number of markets.
Nissan doesn't provide a great deal of additional information on this new concept. Rather than tell us about its engine, transmission or interior, the Japanese manufacturer simply said the Lannia is a "sedan theory-breaker," whatever that means. It's targeted, meanwhile, at Chinese "post-80s" trendsetters, which we take to mean either very hip nonagenarians or trendy people born after the 1980s (it's probably the latter).
