As many doll collectors (and little girls, of course) know, 2005 has been the "year of the Bratz." Bratz dolls have replaced Barbie dolls in many countries as the top selling dolls, bringing an end to Barbie's control of the doll market and giving birth to what may be called "the age of the Bratz dolls."

MGA Entertainment, the creator of the Bratz toy line, has recently given the nod to the Bratz Rock Angelz video game, which was a rather obvious next step to take when you consider the Bratz exploding popularity. It's no surprise that countless children have decided to play as the teenage divas right from the comforts of their own home; there aren't very many games targeted for younger girls, much less one with subject matter with such widespread appeal.

The inevitable release of a Bratz Rock Angelz video game was expected by many Bratz fans worldwide (the Bratz dolls are equally or more popular than Barbie dolls in many countries around the world) since competitors like Barbie have experienced the transition to video games for quite some time. What some parents don't realize is the Bratz Rock Angelz video game is based upon a DVD movie of the same name, so children can enjoy two forms of media that work in conjunction with each other.

The story begins when Jade (of course, one of the Bratz girls), gets fired from her internship at a certain magazine (if you are a Bratz fan, you probably know that I am talking about the "Your Thing" fashion magazine). The Bratz Rock Angelz videogame presents an isometric perspective view, just like the Sims saga of games, and has nicely designed graphics. Of course, a game about the Bratz Rock Angelz needs to be, at a minimum, as cool as the dolls, and I think the whole game has a hip vibe that will not disappoint any Bratz fan.

As the girls make their way towards their goal, they will have the possibility to complete a lot of small quests and mini-games, which allow you to customize the clothing, the shoes, the hair and a variety of other aspects of the Bratz Rock Angelz looks, including a lot of accessories. There are also some important items you will need to collect and several key locations you will need to visit in order to help the girls in the process of setting up their own magazine.

But the Bratz Rock Angelz are not alone! In fact, you will need to interact with several other characters from the Bratz dolls toy line, and of course you will be hanging out in some of the available Bratz sets (like the Bratz Shopping mall, for instance).

The Bratz Rock Angelz video game starts with the girls in the school, but soon they are traveling the entire world, looking for the perfect interview to a cool celebrity or finding the perfect news story.

The Bratz Rock Angelz video game is available on a PC-compatible CD-ROM, and it is priced about 20 dollars. Bratz Doll Clothes - Easy Sew Designs
Bratz dolls are indeed very popular. Maybe you are a Bratz doll fan, too! If you would love to sew some clothes for them to wear, try some of these great doll-clothing design tips. My clothes are very easy to make, and they are quite fashionable, too. I try to design styles that are both kid-friendly and parent pleasing, using bright complimentary colors and textures.

Doll clothes patterns are available to purchase in many fabric stores, but I have not yet found any patterns for Bratz dolls. So, I came up with these designs through trial and error. Using inexpensive fabric such as muslin, I experimented with new items until I had some that fit the Bratz dolls “just right.” I then traced the muslin clothing items onto paper to use as patterns for future sewing. This sounds scary, I know. But actually, it allowed for greater freedom when sewing dolls clothes to fit “exactly the way you pictured them in your mind.” Sometimes I had to resize and sew up a muslin item many times before getting it to fit well. In other instances, I got things “right the first time.”
Designing your own patterns allows you to incorporate your own style ideas into the clothes. For instance, I made a dress with only one sleeve, and added a vinyl belt that fastens with Velcro. I also created a night shirt pattern that has sleeves cut right in. For that reason, they did not have to be sewn in separately. This worked out well, because I have never really enjoyed sewing sleeves onto the bodice of a garment. Also, I prefer to put an elastic waistband on pants so that it is easier to slide the pants onto the dolls. Being able to adjust patterns, I was able to include this elastic waistband feature on the doll pants.
The best way to go about a project like this is to make sure that you are in a calm, relaxed state of mind. You do not want to feel rushed or irritable, or you may be setting yourself up for frustration. Be patient and allow yourself to make mistakes with the muslin. You may have to “fine tune” your attempts to make the clothes. For remember, some of the best ideas start out as mistakes!

The Bratz dolls have recently given Barbie some tough competition in the doll industry. Could it have been the competition from Bratz that forced Barbie into this change? With Bratz closing the gap in sales, Barbie needed to come up with some fresh ideas. A new video game called Bratz Forever Diamondz is now on the market for Sony Playstation as well as Ninentendo. The company hopes this new video game will follow the success of the Rock Angelz game. Even more than this, there is talk of a full length animated motion picture in the works for release in 2007.

At no other time in Barbie's history has the competition been this fierce. Will Barbie survive? Only time will tell, but I wouldn't bet against her just yet. It would be hard to imagine life without Barbie. With nearly 50 years under her belt she has seen just about everything.

Does anybody see the similarities between this years Barbie range and last years Barbie range? Is it just a coincidence that Princess Anneliesse from last year is now Princess Annika, Pauper Erika is now Cloud Queen Rayla and King Dominic/Julian is now Prince Aidan. They also look pretty similar too! This is not to say that the new range is not fantastic because it is but maybe this explains the sudden interest in something new for children such as the new Bratz dolls which are exciting and different and not scared of causing controversy.

Maybe our children need toys that reflect the times and do not send us back to our past. Barbie maybe correct in trying to try a few different styles in order to compete with Bratz but diversification may be in order.

Children have always had the desire to pretend, it is part of the growth of their minds and how they learn to interact with the world. That is very likely the reason that dolls have had such a prominent part in society for such a long time. But dolls have not always been the same. In the past few years, the entire nature of dolls has begun to change, as can be seen with the Bratz. These Bratz dolls have (perhaps not single-handedly but certainly as a large part of an ongoing process) changed the fundamental role that a doll plays in a girl's life.

For many years, long before the Bratz were created, dolls existed largely as a way for a girl to pretend to be a mother. A doll was something that had to be cared for. This was their largest and often only role in the girl's life, a role that continues today in the form of baby dolls and such. These types off dolls are still very popular, particularly among the very young girls, but they have been joined by another breed of doll: the fashion doll.

Fashion dolls are not a new phenomenon by any means. In fact, they have been around for decades. The best-known truly successful entry in the early days of the fashion doll genre was Barbie. Barbie was a new kind of doll, an adult, with much more sophistication than could really be found with baby dolls. Suddenly, a doll was not necessarily something that had to be cared for. Rather than pretending the doll was a child to mother, girls everywhere found Barbie as a new outlet for imagination. She was a teacher, a doctor, an astronaut, a wife, whatever role a girl could dream up, Barbie could fill.

For decades, Barbie reigned as queen over the world of fashion dolls. Her place of supremacy was largely unchallenged, as no one could touch her wholesome image and her sheer flexibility of role. But society began to change, and Barbie was losing her grip. As girls became more and more concerned with fashion and edgy culture at earlier ages, Barbie's appeal was reduced to younger girls, leaving a large gap open of preteen and early teen girls who were still young enough to like dolls, but considered themselves to be too old for Barbie. It is that gap that the Bratz dolls stepped into.

The Bratz fit the need perfectly. They are edgier, more stylish, and all around more grown up in focus than Barbie.
