Every year there are more and more baking and cooking supplies to hit the market. Many of these new items make kitchen work easier and more efficient, others are simply not worth the money it costs to purchase them and still others are heralded as revolutionary, only to meet with mixed reviews from people who actually use them. One such category of cooking supplies that seems to have a high percentage of mixed reviews is silicone bakeware.

If you are considering purchasing one or more kinds of silicone bakeware then you should be aware of both the pros and cons of these cooking supplies.

What is Silicone Bakeware?

Silicone bakeware is cookie, cake and other baking pans that are made from silicone rather than glass or metal. These pans are light weight and can actually be rolled up, twisted in various ways and will spring back into shape. They are said to be able to withstand cooking temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, though they can’t be used in a broiler or under any open flame. They are also supposed to be non stick though there seems to be some confusion about whether or not they need to be sprayed with non cook sticking spray to work correctly.

Benefits of Silicone Bakeware

Those who like silicone bakeware point out that these cooking supplies can go from the freezer to a hot oven without cracking or breaking. They also point out that they are dishwasher safe and that you can roll them up and store them into limited spaces.

Negatives of Silicone Bakeware

Those who have tried silicone bakeware and found it wanting, have cited the following reasons for not liking these baking supplies. Many complain that they are extremely flimsy and difficult to wash. They also complain that you have to increase baking time when using these products and that they cook unevenly. Others complain that these baking pans actually leave an aftertaste on the food that is cooked in them.

Confusion and Discrepancies

There also seems to be some confusion and discrepancies between users who like and dislike these products. One is that while some users report that food sticks in them, others say that food releases easily from them. Another discrepancy seems to be in clean up, while some users say that using these products makes for easy clean up in the dishwasher others report that stains remain on the cookware.

It does seem that the higher end priced silicone bakeware does do a better job than the lower end products, though in light of all the cons it seems like paying the money to purchase the higher end product and then ending up disappointed would be a waste of money.

The best recommendation that can be offered is that if you are considering buying this cookware you might want to find someone who owns some and try it out before purchasing it. Another option is to take time to read the reviews across the net on this type of cookware and decide if it is the product for you.

When it comes to summer foods, most people want to look forward to it. Summer food cooking does not have to be limited to the summer months, though. Even during the fall and winter, you can get out that grill and make some great dishes that will feel good and remind you of warmer days of relaxing. Here are three ways to easily bring the memories of summer to the table.

1.Use your grill year round. It’s that simple. Your favorite ribs and your tasty steaks can be cooked on your grill during all months of the year. If you have a porch or a garage, then you can have your grill. Use caution, of course, to make sure that nothing bad happens, but there is no law that says the grill is only for cooking during the summer months.

2.Grill indoors. One of the best tools that you can have in your kitchen is a grill pan. These have little ridges on them to create those grill marks that are so important. To spice up any meal, use one. A great treat is to make cut up veggies on these pans. Simply cut the veggies rather big. Use a bit of extra virgin olive oil on them to keep them from sticking and you have an amazing summer side dish. Do this with squashes, peppers, onions…just about anything.

3.Add some heat! To make sure that the summer heat comes through, ad some heat to virtually any dish. If you like spices, then you know your heat levels. But, if you haven’t had a lot of heat in your food before, start with a milder hot pepper or spice and work your way up. Consider cayenne, for example. Adding pablano chilies to any meal will bring the heat up and remind you of summer months.

Cooking for summer doesn’t have to be just in the summer months. With so many supermarkets providing high quality produce all year round, there is no reason not to have the best of the best when it comes to summer meals.

When you move into a new home you are going to have to worry about setting up each and every room which includes having to stock your kitchen with kitchen utensils. There are all kinds of things that you will need for your new kitchen from dishes to glasses to pots and pans. Having the proper cooking utensils available is going to make every day cooking and cooking for a party that much more simple. So what type of kitchen utensils are you going to want to have stocked in your kitchen?

A quality set of knives should be at the top of your kitchen utensil list. Having a quality set of knives is essential for a good working kitchen. You can use knives to slice all kinds of meats along with vegetables and fruits. You can use knives to slice cakes, bars, pies and other desserts. You should have a good case or butchers block to store your knives and be sure to keep them well sharpened.

Cooking utensils such as whisks, ladles, spatulas, measuring spoons and measuring cups are essential items to have if you plan on doing any type of cooking at all in your kitchen. These items will help you make proper measurements while you are cooking and baking. They will also allow you to be able to mix things together, turn foods as you are cooking them and serve food when it has been prepared.

While we are on the subject of cooking and baking you are going to need a cutting board in your kitchen to protect your counters while you are slicing things. You will also want a colander so that you will be able to drain liquids away from the food that you are working with.

You are going to need a mixer and a blender to help mix together the food or drinks that you are preparing. If you enjoy preserving foods then you will want to get yourself a dehydrator and a food saver system. If you like making pasta from scratch then you will want to invest in a pasta maker. The next kitchen utensils that you are going to need to invest in are of course pots and pans and cookie sheets to cook your food on or in.

The best thing that you can do before you even get started on purchasing kitchen and cooking utensils is to really take stock of what kinds of dishes that you normally like to prepare, then of course how much room do you have in your kitchen to store all your utensils in. There is no sense spending a lot of money of fancy cooking utensils when you really don’t do a lot of cooking. You also do not want to buy a lot of things to put into your kitchen if you are lacking in storage space.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cooking and kitchen utensils. Take your time trying to figure out what the best purchases are for your unique needs and you will have a kitchen that you will love spending time in preparing food for your loved ones.

What Kind of Bakeware Should I Have?

If you are just starting out in your first home there are probably lots of things that you are finding that you will need to set up housekeeping in your own home. One of the most confusing rooms to furnish is the kitchen. That’s because there are so many types and options available that it is hard to decide what you really need and what you don’t. One of hardest things for a new homemaker to determine is exactly what kind of bakeware you are going to need. In order to simplify this task, here are the basic bakeware items and baking utensils you will need to start with.

Baking Utensils

You’ve probably watched a cooking show or two, wandered through the bakeware section of your local store, and gotten completely confused as to exactly what you need to do a little simple baking. Surprisingly you can bake almost anything with a few simple utensils. Here are the musts, that will make baking easy.

A whisk- A good sturdy yet flexible whisk will allow you to mix just about anything you will need to like butter, eggs, and other ingredients to make cookies, pies, and cakes.

Spatulas- Those rubber tipped ones with the plastic handles your grandmother use to call pot lickers. 3 should be enough; one narrow, one medium and one wide.

Wooden spoons- Wooden spoons come in handy for both baking and cooking in the kitchen. Get a set that has 4 or 5 spoon in various sizes and lengths.

Measuring spoons and cups for both dry and liquid ingredients. If you are just learning to bake you are going to want to follow the recipes as accurately as possible to ensure success.

A good electric mixer- While most things can be stirred by hands, a mixer makes things much simpler, not only is it good for baking but it makes your homemade mash potatoes fluffier.

Bakeware

Once you have all the necessary baking utensils you will be ready to move on to the bakeware. Here are the basics you will need for almost all your baking needs.

Large and small mixing bowls- Unless your mixer comes with a mixing bowl you are going to want at least one large and one small size bowl for mixing various ingredients. Many times you can purchase sets of three bowls more cheaply than your can buy two separately.

8 inch round and an 8 inch square baking pan, a cookie sheet, a pie pan, a muffin pan and at least two casserole dishes.

It really does not matter what brand or material you chose for your bakeware. Choose something that is appealing to you. There are so many choices and brand names and most will get the job done for you. Take your time and take a look around and just see what is available. I would recommend getting casserole dishes that can go from the oven to the table as that will save you some time and effort.

One more thing, if this will be your first baking experience you might want to choose baking pans with a non stick surface. Burnt food pops right out of them.

Bakeware

No matter whether you are just getting married, getting your first apartment or you just need new flatware, you may find yourself asking what you need to look for when making this purchase. For some, it is just a simple trip to the store to grab the first package of flatware that they come across but for others it can be a task.

This is not a purchase that you just want to grab and go with as you will want to have good quality flatware that will last you for years to come. With that being said, one of the first things that you want to look for in your flatware set is quality. You want the flatware to be sturdy and of good quality, The last thing you want is to have a flatware set that is going to rust on you in a month or bend when you want to cut a piece of steak.

Some of the best types to go with where flatware sets are concerned is stainless steel. You will not have to worry about rusting. You also want to check to be sure that it is sturdy enough so make sure that there is a good thickness to the flatware. Nothing is more embarrassing at a dinner party then to have the fork bend under pressure when you dig into your meal.

You will want to be sure that you have enough flatware. Do you need flatware that will serve 4 people, eight people or ten people? If you find the perfect flatware set and it only comes with enough servings for four then you will want to invest in a few sets to be sure that you have enough to handle guests if you have a cook out or dinner party.

You also want to consider the warranty on the product. This way if something does go wrong, you can have the flatware replaced if needed. It is important to send in the warranty card or go online and fill out the warranty so that the company will honor the warranty in the event you need to use it.

Shop around. You do not want to go with the cheapest deal just because you want to save a buck or two as this can only end up costing you more in the end if you need to replace it. If you are going to buy your flatware online then you may want to find a local store that carries the same flatware set so that you know exactly what you’re getting.

So no matter if your just getting your own place or your getting married, take the time to get good quality flatware. Your dinner guests will thank you in the end.

Let’s be honest. People are getting fat these days. In fact, obesity rates are at an all time high. And while there are many reasons for our current corpulence, one thing is certain—Americans eat out too much. Whether we’re talking about fast food, pizza, or Chinese, the simple fact is that all of these foods are high in calories and incredibly fattening.

It wasn’t always this way. There was a time, not too long ago, when families actually cooked real meals, homemade meals. This food was often prepared using fresh ingredients, and not only did it taste a lot better than the garbage we get when we eat out, but it was also much healthier and cheaper, too.

What’s changed?

While it is true that people are busier than they’ve ever been, the fact is that food prices, real food that you get at the supermarket, is incredibly cheap. So, while you might not have the time to cook a homemade meal each and every night of the week, you can at least find the time to make dinner every other night.

What you will need

When it comes to cooking homemade meals, the most important thing, other than the ingredients, is the cookware. That’s right, the cookware. Kitchen cookware helps the designated chef ensure that all food is thoroughly cooked in a timely manner and that clean up is a breeze. In the next few paragraphs we are going to take a look at some of the most popular kinds of kitchen cookware.

Cookware Options

Cookware is most commonly composed of one of the following four metals: Copper, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, or cast iron. Each of these metals has their share of benefits and drawbacks.

Copper is a great conductor of heat, which is why most high-quality kitchen cookware is made from this metal. The only notable criticism of copper cookware is that when it is used to heat acidic foods like tomatoes, they come out tasting a little strange. Also, it is quite expensive.

Just like copper, aluminum is also a great conductor of heat and it is also very cheap, which is why it is by far the most popular metal used in cookware. The only real disadvantage with aluminum is that is scratches easily, which means that it has a comparatively short self life.

On the other hand, stainless steel is a popular metal when it comes to kitchen cookware because it is both durable and cheap. It also doesn’t leave a strange metallic taste in you mouth and it is completely scratch resistant. The only real knock against stainless steel cookware is that it is not a particularly good conductor of heat, which means that food can be unevenly cooked if you don’t pay close attention.

Last but not least, we have the old Southern favorite, cast iron cookware. This kitchen cookware is used in a number of classic Southern dishes since it is not only a good conductor of heat, but also because it is versatile and can even be placed in the oven. However, cast iron cookware is notoriously difficult to clean and may require overnight soaking along with several minutes of vigorous scrubbing.

Whether you are moving into a mansion or your first apartment, everyone needs cooking supplies. And though budgets may differ, the basic equipment remains the same. You will need cooking utensils, small appliances, cookware, flatware and dinnerware.

Flatware and Dinnerware

Okay, it’s true. Most people don’t consider dinnerware or flatware to be cooking supplies. After all, you don’t really cook with them, you eat with them. But since flatware and dinnerware are such an essential part of the dinning experience, we choose to include them.

As you are undoubtedly aware, dinnerware includes all dishes, bowls, and cups, while flatware includes all utensils that are used during the meal. Your options here are virtually limitless. You can purchase mismatched dollar a piece dinnerware at a local thrift store, or expensive antique china at a fine boutique. There are also a number of options when it comes to flatware, which is available in affordable metals like stainless steel or pricey ones like sterling silver.

Cookware

Now we come to the real cooking equipment. Anything and everything that you use to cook, fry, boil or steam on top of a stove is officially classified as cookware. That includes pots, pans, and Dutch ovens of all shapes and sizes. But not all cookware sets are equal, even if they include the same equipment.

The most important thing to consider when shopping for a cookware set is the metal. Most of these sets are available in copper, steel or aluminum. As you might expect, each of these metals have their own specific strengths and weakness. For example, copper is an extremely good conductor of heat, but it is also quite expensive. On the other hand, steel is quite affordable, but it is not a very good conductor of heat. It is up to you to decide which cookware fits into your cooking equipment budget.

Cooking Utensils

This category is easily the largest one as it includes everything from a butcher’s knife to a rolling pin. Really, cooking utensils are anything that you use to do any kind of cooking. That could be a wooden spoon, a ladle, a measuring cup, or a whisk. But when you are searching for indispensable cooking equipment, you should begin with the items you know you will use. For example, you can’t cook without a measuring cup, cutting knifes or a stirring spoon, so you must be sure to include them on your list. After that there are literally hundreds of specialty items from pizza slicers and cheese graters to grapefruit knives and potato peelers. Just make sure you buy a spatula! You can’t cook eggs without one.

Small Appliances

These cooking supplies allow you to prepare meals much more quickly. They include blenders, food processors, toasters, coffeemakers, and toaster ovens. There are also dozens of food specific appliances that can be purchased at any major department store. Small appliances range in price from affordable to quite expensive, and since they frequently are on sale at department and cooking stores, make sure you look around a bit and find the model you want with the features you need.
