video cards on a computer?

I have a question. When you purchase a computer, the video card that comes with the puter, is it usually within the mother board? Any one know which brands of computer don’t do that? It is so much easier to deal with if you just have to pull it out of a slot and replace it. If it is in the motherboard, I have no clue how to fix it. Thank you

Most computers come with their video cards built into the motherboard – but don’t worry. If you install a new video card in the AGP or PCI Express slot (high end, recent computers have PCI Express, other machines generally have AGP) then it will disable the device built into the motherboard.

How can i tell if I have a PCI or PCI-E Graphics card?

I’m looking to buy a new graphics card but i can’t tell if i have a PCI or PCI-E card… i’m guessing that it’s all to do with how it connects to the motherboard if so, is that how i distinguish between them visually?

See the first link for an image to help differentiate PCI and PCI-E slots.
See the second link for an image of am AGP slot (with a couple of PCI slots).
If you have an AGP slot there is a further complication – whether it is 4x or 8x… Examine the slots and compare with the diagram in the Compatibility section of the second link below.

It seems to me that you will need to know what your current card is, in order to work out what to replace it with – without spending too much money!

Post details of your system in another question for a multitude of (some conflicting) advice!

What is the top ten graphics cards on the market today?

I have been playing all of my online games with really laggy gameplay. My FPS stays between 6 and 10. I want to know for personal opinions (not from a site) what graphics card can i install (for windows) that will run my games smoothly?
The main game i play is WoW. No doubt lol

but there are others such as CoD 4, or Mirrors edge
and i have AMD Phenom 9650 quad-core processor. 7 gigs of RAM and currently a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 nForce 430.

It really depends on what kinds of games you play and what speed your processor is. the reason i say this is if you have a older processor and you go out and buy a top of the line graphics card you wont see the full benefit of such a good card. i had a pentium dual core E2200 and i got a 9800 gtx+ and did not see much increase in my frame rates. when i got my e7300 running at 3.2 ghz i saw a hug jump in frame rates. that being said you cant go wrong with a nvidia gtx series or a radeon 4850 or 4870 just be prepared to drop some serious coin for a " top of the line" graphics card.

pick up a copy of PC Gamer magazine. in the Hardstuff section they always list the best parts based on how much you want to spend overall. that’s where i would start.

Yes if your motherboard has 2 pcie slots and supports SLI you can… but for what 2 of those cost you could pick up a single 7950gt which has 512mb of ram and is probably faster then 2 7600gt’s.
