Buzz Jeans 2012 trend report: Let's get physical!

The third prediction on Buzz Jeans' list of upcoming fashion trends for 2012 is a bit of a surprising departure for haute couture.

Athletic and sportswear-inspired looks have long held a place in street style but the trend has been sprinting onto the runways in a pretty energetic way, appearing in spring and summer collections from Alexander Wang, BCBG, Vera Wang, Lacoste, Stella McCartney and Rag and Bone.

Sport mesh has been a big staple of such athletic collections, though it's gotten the designer treatment. Alexander Wang featured perforations galore in his racing inspired Spring/Summer collection, while Vera Wang experimented with mesh featuring perforations of various sizes that worked along curved lines rather than on a grid.

Meanwhile, bold and bright colors, offset by crisp whites, tend to be the choice for the athletic look on the runways, including top colors chosen by the Pantone Color Institute for the upcoming season: Solar Power yellow, Tangerine Tango, and Sodalite Blue.

Functional and lightweight, the anorak is usually reserved for joggers and track and field athletes, but it's been central to the Spring/Summer collection of Rag and Bone, who paired it with ladylike heels and pencil skirts as well as sporty short-shorts.

The trick with this look is to balance performance items with traditional fashion staples. You want to work a style that's fresh and energetic, but not straight out of the gym, so avoid athletic shoes if you're doing a sporty jacket or jogging shorts.

A feminine bag with sprinter's shorts or a tennis skirt, or even a dress paired with a work-out ready anorak, will give you a look that's more runway and less running man.

This week, Buzz Jeans began rolling out our picks for 2012's biggest fashion trends, with highlights of the most popular looks from the runways for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

Our first trend, 1920s glamour, was slick, polished and cosmopolitain. But, for the second instalment of Buzz Jeans' 2012 trend report, we're focusing on a trend that's a little hotter, and a lot wilder – tribal and safari styles inspired by the African wilderness.

This look has shown up in the spring and summer runway collections of Missoni, Bottega Veneta, Donna Karan, and Salvatore Ferragamo to name a few. And it absolutely dominated Michael Kors' spring summer 2012 show, where safari-style packs and suits intermingled with leopard print, snakeskin and feathers.

Last year's animal print trend is not going away anytime soon, though, this year, we'll see it alongside graphic, tribal prints and safari-style neutrals, like tan and khaki. Bright, warm sunset hues like yellow orange and red, and earth tones tend to be the major color palette for this exotic and earthen look.

Bold geometry, woven or beaded details, tanned leather, and chunky, tribal necklaces that sit high on the collar add a raw texture to this trend, perfect for the long sunny days of summer and its hot, sultry nights.

As a little aside to this post, we couldn't help including this oldie but goodie, Paul Simon and Miriam Makeba performing 'Under African Skies' live. These two musical greats share a beautiful dynamic and the atmosphere created by their duet is just overbrimmingly joyful.

The report from the authorities is in, and this time it isn't for your eyes only. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to collect intelligence about the season's biggest colors for men's fashion, and then hit the trend right on traget.

The life of an international man of style isn't easy, but the Pantone Color Institute (PCI) makes the job easier with their seasonal Fashion Color Report.

Some of the strong, bold and bright colors we saw in the PCI's Spring 2012 Color Report for women have made it to the men's palette as well, and they'll be the definitive colors for fashion over all this season.

But the PCI has also introduced some hues just for the guys in their top ten color trends of the season.

Starfish

According to the PCI, the biggest color by far this year is going to be Tangerine Tango, a brave orange that, along with Solar Power, a strong, saturated yellow, make for "the perfect confidence boosters."

Either tone can be combined for a crisp, balanced effect with the deep, nautical Sodalite Blue, or with sandy neutral Starfish "for a safer, more subdued look."

Going beyond basic blues, Hawaiian Blue and Dazzling Blue "evoke feelings of calm ocean and tranquil beach vacations," says the PCI, which recommends you wear them together for an unexpected pairing in which the subtle differences between either hue show to best advantage.

Alternately, a clean and sporty combination of Dazzling Blue with cool, breezy grey Tradewinds and Grass Green, a classic golf-inspired tone, makes for a fresh athletic mix, perfect for sailing or at the country club.

For a striking spin on the military theme, mix the soldierly Vintage Khaki with an unexpected bold color, like Granita "a full-bodied and robust deep red."

It's an intense pairing, but you'll need courage and daring if you're to be the best dressed man this spring.

As a new year begins, Buzz Jeans is looking ahead to the next twelve months of fashion, with a spotlight on this year's biggest trends from the runways.

British Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The Telegraph all noted a 1920s influence in Spring/Summer collections from Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Etro, and Marchesa to name but a few.

New York Fashion Week saw a slew of flapper dresses with drop waists, fringe, tassels and beading, and the trend is likely to be big off the runways this year as well.

There are several possibilities as to why the 1920s aesthetic is making a comeback now. Though, with both Vogue and Harper's Bazaar calling the look Gatsby-esque, its newfound popularity may have something to do with the new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, set to hit theatres in December of 2012.

Short, straight-line fringed dresses make great cocktail wear, and pastelle bell hats are lovely for daytime, but the Gatsby look will be big for evening wear as well, with glamorous mermaid dresses, beading and boas already a big part of couture's 2012 collections for spring and summer.

A preview of Spring 2012's hottest colors for women's fashion

Here in Montreal, where Buzz Jeans is based, we've had two solid days of snow, interrupted only by freezing rain. Meanwhile the temperature is about to drop to what will feel like -25 degrees Celsius tonight.

That said, anything that reminds us that spring is just around the corner is a welcome comfort.

So, with the recent release of the Pantone Color Institute's (PCI) Spring 2012 Fashion Color Report, we rejoice and look forward to next season – one that's shaping up to be strong, bright and bold.

The PCI based their list of color trends for spring 2012 fashion on shows at New York Fashion Week, as well as on insights for industry influencers, including designers Ella Moss and Betsey Johnson, fashion directors at top retailers, stylists, costume designers, and even Barbie.

Here we bring you the top ten color trends for women's fashion, according to the PCI.

We love Legally Blonde's Elle Woods, but maybe she was the one who was "seriously disturbed" when she scoffed at the idea of orange becoming the new pink.

Tangerine Tango, a deep, rich shade of vibrant orange is shaping up to become not just the top color trend of the coming season, but is also likely to be one of spring 2012's biggest trends over all.

Calling it "provocative," the PCI describes Tangerine Tango as "an enticing juicy orange [...] a vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone’s outlook this spring."

The saturated hue brings in an exotic and at times tribal aspect to bohemian and safari-inspired looks. So, maybe Elle should stick to picking colors for her chihuahua's outfits.

Bright and rich at the same time, Cockatoo, a whimsical blue green will add a fresh burst to outfits when paired with Margarita, and set a soft, dreamy tone when combined with Sweet Lilac and Starfish.

Another bright burst of color on PCI's list this spring is Solar Power, a warm, cheerful yellow that, like Tangerine Tango, echoes a vibrant, tropical sunset.

The PCI suggests "Solar Power is best juxtaposed with Sodalite Blue," though "for a safer bet, add a natural neutral like Starfish to the mix."

We also like it in combination with Margarita, a spring-like, soft green with yellow undertones, which the PCI says "lifts spirits with its refreshing and stimulating glow." True, margaritas always lift our spirits...

One of the season's cooler tones, Bellflower purple still makes a splash in recommended pairings with warner colors, like Tangerine Tango, or Cabaret, a "sensual and intense rosy-red."

Likely to be a major trend for spring 2012's cosmetics as well, molten-hot Cabaret can be paired with softer more pastelle pinks, like Sweet Lilac, for a funky, yet girly combo.

As much as we love brights for spring, we're relieved to see some neutrals in palette, like sandy Starfish, or the grey-beige blend of Driftwood, an elegant color that works as well as a standalone (especially for highly structured garments) as it does as a counterpoint to any of this spring's major colors.

Women's tuxes, particularly in black and white, made a splash on 2011's runways

Buzz Jeans is wrapping up our retrospective of 2011's hottest and biggest looks on and off the runways in this, the third instalment of our of list of 2011's most buss-worthy fashion trends.

So far, we've revisited the most popular cuts, prints, textures and inspiration, from palazzo pants to polka dots, mesh, animal prints, punk, and beaded evening wear.

Now, as we close our coverage of the past year's most notable styles and trends, we'll see how menswear made a major impact on women's collections, how tapered trousers got the graphic treatment, and how young men began taking style advice from their grandpas.

The trend: women's tuxes

It's no longer a man's world and, in 2011, the tuxedo (that staple of men's formalwear) became the rage for women's black-tie fashion, with Ralph Lauren and Alexander Wang among others putting out Humphrey Bogart-inspired pieces more suited to Lauren Bacall.

Menswear classics, like the tuxedo jacket, the smoking jacket, the white dress shirt, and black trousers underwent a feminine transformation with elegant cuts, luxurious and sheer fabrics, and extra detailing.

Black tux pants, like Motel's double-button Susan Trouser, took on a higher rise and tapering, for a womanly hourglass silhouette, and appeared in soft, billowing fabrics for a girly effect.

Meanwhile, the traditional tuxedo palette of black and white, as well as typically masculine structuring dominated tops and jackets as well.

The trend: geometric tapered trousers

Tapered trousers have been gradually edging out the full-on skinny silhouette for pants over the past year on the runways, but in 2011, bold, geometric patterns were added to the mix.

This past year, collections from the likes of Thakoon and Proenza Schouler featured intricate prints on flowy and tapered pants, a trend that made its way to ready-to-wear in a snap.

The harem silhouette which resurged in 2011, and which celebrated small waists and ample hips got bold and busy with the introduction of this trend and Buzz Jeans saw the style catch on with some of our favorite labels, like Funktional.

The trend for men: grandpa style

So far, our 2011 fashion retrospective has focused mainly on trends for women. But one running theme in the past year's menswear collections can't be ignored.

We're still working on our 2011 fashion retrospective at Buzz Jeans and, boy, was it a busy year on the runways.

In our first instalment of the past year's most buzz-worthy fashion trends, we remembered palazzo pants, polka dots, and punk chic.

But equally big in 2011 were animal prints, sheers and laces, and shining, glittery finishes. Here, we'll look at the wild, romantic, and glitzy crazes we went nutty for.

The trend: all things animal

Fashion took a walk on the wild side in 2011 with animal inspired prints and textures at every turn.

Dolce & Gabanna, Gucci, Moschino, Mulberry, and Dries Van Noten all brought classic wildlife prints and textures, like leopard, jaguar and tiger, to their collections last year, mostly in natural tones.

Buzz Jeans saw the trend explode with the arrival of animalistic styles from One Teaspoon, like the Surrender Leopard Dress, and the Lonely Hearts Fur Jacket in snow leopard print.

But, not to be outdone, reptiles also made the roster of animal inspired pieces on the runway this year, with labels like Chloé, Prada, and Missoni all feeding the trend.

One of the best ways to achieve a look that is both sexy and sophisticated is with mesh and lace. The effect is revealing, not naked.

Glitz and glam was back in a big way this past year, with Calvin Klein, Balmain, Reed Krakoff, and Jonathan Saunders all putting out glittery cocktail dresses, most with a short hemline.

The metallic trend of the past few years gained added texture in 2011, with an emphasis on sequins and beading, as in Shakuhachi's Heavy Metal Insert Dress.

The skinny look has been in for jeans for the past couple of years now, but the emergence of flowy, wide-leg trousers on the runways this year blew the pencil-leg out of the water, at least in terms of pants for evening.

Palazzo pants appeared in solids and prints alike, with floral a natural choice for this feminine silhouette reminiscent of both the 1940s and the 1970s.

The trend: polka dots

If you were seeing spots in 2011, you probably didn't need to get your eyes checked. That's because polka dots, both big and small, were everywhere, and Lanvin, Marc Jacobs and Gucci all went in for this one.

Touted as Fall 2011's MVP (Most Valuable Print) by Harper's Bazaar, this retro and preppy pattern was most popular in black and white.

The trend: punk chic

A lovely dinner at Le Local

It's been a good year at Buzz Jeans, and to top things off this week, the whole gang got together to do what we do best – party!

We had a delicious meal at Le Local, courtesy of the big cheese George Krausz. Who says "Yuri" isn't the most generous guy around?

Holiday cheer, plus great lipstick

George played Santa to the best of his abilities, though one gets the feeling that he's more of a Festivus guy.

Indeed, the evening featured an "airing of grievances," complete with our beloved Mr. Krausz telling us what he loved about each of us, as well as what he found silly.

You can't see Allie's shoes in this pic, but I considered knocking her out and running away with them.

He mocked the vegetarians among us as he dug into a two-person platter of bavette and told us all a special holiday story about the world's worst McDonald's. Please try to imagine the following being told with a Ukrainian accent:

"The parking lot said 'No Parking.' I mean, how stupid is that?!" He also had qualms with the fact that you had to circumnavigate the building just to get in. And, to make matters worse, poor George's burger bun just completely disintegrated before he could take a bite.

Also, apparently, the dangerously overweight employee at the counter fell down "for no reason" while taking George's order. And, when the second clerk, "who was even bigger," asked if she was alright, the poor girl answered no.

"She wasn't alright before. She wasn't alright after. And she's still not alright," concluded George, leaving most of us in stitches.

The waiter couldn't figure out the camera. His excuse? "I'm from the country."

We made merry with a little gift exchange. Everyone got something they liked (some of it from Buzz Jeans), and Yael and I gave each other the exact same thing. Let's just say our veins will be coursing with Starbuck's coffee in the New Year.

But the highlight was, bar none, the hand-drawn Santa Krausz card George received. He didn't think "Santa" looked much like him, but I for one think the artist expertly captured the essence of a festive George.

Oh yeah, and Spencer, since you reportedly "had the flu" and couldn't make it, we all made fun of you all night and called you things like "smelly pants" and "ninny," so maybe you should consider coming next year.

Even though, as Rosie noted, "George is in his 'early thirties,'" the old timer among us still had the energy to go out for a couple of drinks after dinner. So we decided to head out to nearby Philémon. The only problem? Six girls, plus George and only one standard-sized Mercedes

We squashed ourselves in like circus performers into a clown-car and warnings "not to fart" began to fly. Once at the bar, we realized we had crashed Vice Magazine's private Christmas party. Though, by the looks of it, they needed the little boost of energy we brought to their so-called celebration.

For the coolest people in the world, they sure were tame. But one nice Vice squad member was kind enough to give Katie and Myranda a present from under the tree.

Too bad the gift boxes only contained bits of old paper, plastic, and other packaging. But at least the girls went home with festive headbands.

Hooray for holiday headbands! Not yet for sale at Buzz Jeans.

All in all, it was a lovely evening of laughs, jibes and just a bit of mischief. Even though some of us are new to the Buzz Jeans team, we all got together as old friends for good food, good drink, and good conversation.

One last thing, there was this creepy guy at Philémon who looked like a poster boy for Swiss Abercrombie and Fitch. Everything about him just screamed phoney, he turned an offer of a handshake into a minute-long spectacle and even sunk to doing a sort of handjive in an effort to impress the ladies.

We're a bit behind here but we just found out that men's fashion and lifestyle blog ManAboutMTL voted Buzz Jeans the top store to buy summer denim in Montreal.

We also think we're the city's top store for winter denim, but so much thanks to "the man" in any case for the gushing review. He even mentions the head cheese, George, as well as yours truly:

With a roster of jean brands that reads like a who's who (think AG, Citizens of Humanity, Hudson, J Brand, Nudie, etc.) you'll always be well served by hitting this Mtl. mainstay.

On my visit, George Krausz's passion and knowledge for his product was apparent – he noticed my dark wash pair of Naked and Famous and proceeded to give me a crash course in selvedge denim.

Top notch service is one of their cornerstones as the staff is uber-knowledgable about their lines, and offer approachable, personalized service with a laid-back, youthful vibe.

CBC's Q asks "can you trust fashion bloggers?"

Yesterday, I caught an interesting interview on Jian Gomeshi's CBC radio show Q. It seems appropriate to post about it here, as it concerns a subject very close to the work we do at the Buzz Jeans blog – fashion blogging.

This season, Q is running a feature called 'Fashion Unzipped,' and for the latest instalment, Gomeshi sat down with Fashionista.com's fashion news editor Hayley Phelan to discuss her recently written piece, 'Can You Trust the Editorial Integrity of Personal Style Blogs?'

In this interview, Phelan discusses the relationship between blogs and business – namely, whether or not readers can trust a blogger's opinions on a given brand when so many style bloggers have a business relationship with the brands they post about.

Phelan says these relationships may range from a blogger being given an item for free and blogging about it in return, to direct paid promotion from brands. Some may even tailor their posts to suit a brand's desired image, going so far as to submit their piece to the brand for approval before posting it.

Sometimes, Phelan says, the business relationship doesn't disturb journalistic integrity. In these cases, the blogger will be transparent about their connection to a brand, letting the readers know they're a sponsor. Other times, however, no effort is made to tell the reader that the opinions they're reading are not really opinions at all.

Naturally, blogging differs from traditional journalism, and many bloggers don't actually have any real journalistic education or training. Though Phelan argues that a blogger should nonetheless maintain some integrity regarding the editorial content they post.

"Bloggers just have to make sure that they're disclosing when products are given for free, that they're disclosing when there's a working relationship. So, if they're writing about a certain brand and it's because they received payment in some way, they have to disclose that," she says.

Hahaha, I had no choice in the move matter!

My mom took my brother and I from Aix-en-Provence back to Montreal, where she was born and raised, when I was 5 years old.

While I can't say for sure how being raised in France would have changed my style tastes, I definitely think I've got a bit of the French nonchalance towards beauty and style instilled within me, and some of the North American tastes for accessorizing and jazzing up a look.

It makes for a good balance, in my humble opinion.

You say you began Le Cheap c'est Chic during a recession. What do you think the fashion world can learn from this kind of economic situation?

That less really is more! Honestly, I feel (lately especially) that I have so much, and so much to be thankful for.

Fashion can sometimes feel like it's a “more is more” industry. The wheel never ceases to turn and, by the same token, where there's something to draw inspiration from (i.e a street style look or an editorial), there's a purchase to be made.

For the most part. I definitely recognize my contribution to that cycle via lecheapcestchic.com, but I like to think I present my readers with a little bit of a more "relatable" approach to the industry.

Is there something more satisfying about putting together a look on the cheap than shopping with unlimited funds?

It depends. I have some pieces in my wardrobe that are on the pricier side of things and they're very satisfying to pull out some days. But I also get a great thrill when I wear less expensive pieces, like my Zara tote bag, which has not left my shoulder for the past month.

I think it's more about the feeling a given piece gives you when you're wearing it. You can't put a price on that. And there's an absolutely fantastic feeling within the thrill of the find!

But I cannot say that my Ebay-ed YSL Besace bag gives me greater pleasure than myshopbop.com scored Alexander Wang Daria bag. You know?

Whether I care for one more than the other depends on my mood and style inclinations at a given time [...]

One thing's for sure in my mind, shopping on a budget forces you to be more creative, which one could argue earns one greater style cred. Over all, I very much like the idea of a mix of reasonably priced things with one standout accessory that makes you feel amazing – no matter what the price point.

You interned at Elle, a pretty major publication with a lot of people involved. Now, with Le Cheap c'estChic, it's a totally different platform and it's pretty much all you. Can you relate some of the differences between the two – what you've learned from either, the pros and cons?

It's funny, I think people on the outside often imagine publishing as this big wheel of people, dressed to the nines à la Condé Nast.

When I interned at ELLE Canada, the editorial team was composed of 7 editors, give or take. Naturally, ELLE comes with a bigger name and is widely known so they've established their credibility and presence on the market, whereas LeCheap c'est Chic is still working on getting its name widely known, and more so with the recent re-launch of the brand.

When you're single-handedly pioneering something, like an online site, the great thing is that the content is all you. But the flip side is that when working in a team, you can feed off of each other's ideas, you know?

Luckily, I have a very supportive entourage with a few close friends with links in the industry and we talk about my blog posts and bounce inspiration and ideas off of one another. So, it never really feels like I'm alone in the game.

Plus, I author the content from my point of view, but I like to think of my readers whenever I'm posting. They're a part of the creative process as well. And who knows, maybe one day Le Cheap c'est Chic will be more than a one woman show.

How do you reconcile high-fashion with low-budgets? Is there a conflict inherent in that?

I definitely don't think so. Not today.

The lower price point stores are so quick to turn out seasonal collections inspired [...] by the runways, that you can always inevitably find something similar for less. Unless it's an amazing staple or item I just know I'll wear the heck out of, does anyone really care to wear just high-fashion?

I think it's far more interesting to work within your budget and draw inspiration from the high-fashion ranks.

Just the other day, my friend was telling me she randomly found this blink-and-you-miss-it gem of a store selling more than covetable pieces at $40 each. And also, with designer sale sites and the like, there's always a deal to be had somewhere. You just have to do your research – nothing worth having comes without some kind of effort.

Good food is but one aspect of the Le Cheap c'est Chic lifestyle

You don't just cover clothes on your blog. You've done hairstyles, makeup, food, and housewares too. Would you say there is a certain Le Cheap c'est Chic lifestyle? If so, could you describe what you think that lifestyle means?

I would definitely say so!

It's hard to be solely a personal style blogger, I think, living in Montreal and being on the older side of things in terms of being a blogger.

Everyone in my surrounding works full time jobs, and are therefore limited in the time they can devote to my cause. and I don't have access to a photographer or someone who's SLR skilled to follow me around. So I think that the other facets of Le Cheap c'est Chic sort of came to be naturally, as a result of not being able to post content that's outfits all the time, whether it's for uncooperative weather reasons or lack of a photographer.

Also, through Formspring (formspring.me/stephaniechic) my readers have asked me a bunch of different questions, ranging from how to care for a given item or what to wear to prom or a job interview, to what a day in the life is like. So I sometimes feel that my readers want to see more than just personal outfit posts.

The Le Cheap c'est Chic lifestyle is sort of a 360 degree reflection of my life, from what I'm lusting after, to what I'm wearing, to the makeup I'm loving, the places I'm travelling to, and the things I'm seeing day in an out, etc.

When it comes to the creative part of my life, no detail is spared, really. If i'm inspired by it, you're going to see it, blogged. I try and give my readers an extension of my 3-D self through the site, so it's sort of a humble portrayal of all the things that influence me.

You seem to be quite the traveler. What are some of your favourite experiences abroad? What's the best city, in you opinion, for inexpensive style finds.

I have done my fair share of traveling. I value it and I think that was instilled in me from a young age, as I've travelled a lot with my family over the years. But the solo thing got its start in 2005, when I backpacked in Australia, part of New Zealand and Fiji.

Each trip has given me some of the best moments I've experienced so there is no way to say that when I went to NYC alone a few Octobers ago that it was more favoured than when I traveled the South Pacific or Portugal this past summer. They were all rewarding in ways that cannot be calculated or compared.

Whenever I've been really traveling – like solo and doing the hostel thing – it's not a shopping-motivated trip, so to be honest I'm not equipped to say which city has the best inexpensive style finds. But I'd be willing to bet that with a little research there are inexpensive gems to be found in most bigger cities.

Honestly, I found Toronto to have some of the best priced vintage pieces I'd ever seen! I scored a one-of hand-stitched gold and black sequinned blazer there for $12. Even at the time of purchase, I couldn't believe that price. I wasn't sure where I'd wear it and I haven't worn it much since, but the quality relative to the price made it impossible to pass it up.

Your following is big, and it's hard to imagine it's only made up of thrifty girls. What do you think your blog gives to women who don't necessarily have a tight budget?

I definitely don't think it's a following made up of thrifty fashion fiends for the most part. Honestly, I think the emotional tie readers have to Le Cheap c'estChic is because of the relatable content. In today's blog/website saturated world, a lot of the well-known content is aspirational, which is great! We need that in the scheme of things.

But it's that fact that sees me striving to present my audience and whichever new reader that comes by with an inspirational approach to fashion, beauty and life that's, above all, relatable. I like to think that's done with good pictures and an outfit or post made up of something my readers can attain for themselves.

A lot of the feedback I've gotten over the years is that, when people see the posts on Le Cheap c'est Chic (usually this kind of feedback is referencing an outfit post), they get an idea of how they too can pull off something similar, whether it be from their own closet of by way of one of the items I'm posting.

So, I sort of like to blog with that notion in mind. It's a notion that I find fun within the fashion context and it makes me happy to hear that my readers are appreciative of that angle.

Regarding your blog, what are you most proud of? What do you think have been the shining moments for LeCheap c'est Chic?

Honestly I'm most proud of how far it's come and how much it's contributed and continues to contribute to my career path.

It's been an amazing creative outlet that's also given my interests direction. For those who don't know, Le Cheap c'est Chic was started by all accounts on a whim, around midnight one night, during the summer I was living in Toronto.

At the time, I wasn't exactly sure I knew what blogging was about but I knew for sure I wanted a part of what I saw [to be] online. I've never looked at Le Cheap c'est Chic from more than a one-day-at-a-time perspective. As long as the inspiration was there, I'd keep at it.

And with that perspective in mind, I never imagined I'd be on the heels of a re-launch 3+ years down the road [or imagined] the readership it's gained.

I really believe the following it has and the audience goes hand in hand with the content. They feed off of one another and I'm so thankful for both, without which Le Cheapc'est Chic wouldn't be where it is...or where it's headed.

Being one myself, I know it's only natural for fashion bloggers to keep up with designers. They create new styles, we write about them, and our work is necessarily a take-off on theirs.

But, darling that he is, Jeffrey Campbell has turned the tables, with a new shoe design inspired by one of us – Fashiontoast's Rumi Neely. (I'm still waiting for my own high-heeled homage.)

The Rumi is a sweet, suede, square-toed cowboy bootie with a bohemian edge. A slightly lower heel than we're used to from Jeffrey Campbell, the Rumi is a sort of all-about-town shoe, hot with a dress and tights, but perfect with jeans and a chunky knit too.

Sadly, the other two new Jeffrey Campbell styles just in at Buzz Jeans weren't designed for me either. But there's consolation in the fact that they could have been.

Just like the Rumi, there's a bit of a western flair to the suede Prance Ankle Boot, though it's ever so subtle. The rounded toe will make for petite feet and the tassel detail beats spurs, especially if you want to keep things a little more girly.
