Wikileaks: Afghanistan War Logs

Whistleblower website Wikileaks released secret military records which illustrate how the War in Afghanistan is being fought.

The material was passed to the New York Times, the UK’s Guardian and Germay’s Der Spiegel (click through to read their featured articles). All three websites ran the story simultaneously on Sunday July 25, 2010 – although they were given the documents (all 92,000 of them) weeks before.

Spiegel stated: “All three media have concluded that the documents are authentic and provide an unvarnished image of the war in Afghanistan — from the perspective of the soldiers who are fighting it.”

The most explosive revelations describe special forces death squads, the lethally poor performance of drone aircraft, massive unreported civilian deaths and covert funding of the Taliban coming from Pakistan and Iran.

The White House implied the chaos described due to “under-resourcing” by G.W. Bush: “It is important to note that the time period reflected in the documents is January 2004 to December 2009.”
