The Internet is a place for exchange of different content, mostly inaccessible to arms of the law. When The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and The PROTECT IP Act (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act, or PIPA) laws were suggested, many sites for sharing files were closed or changed their policy. It seems that the freedom of the global network is slowly shutting down, but we all ask ourselves who are the greatest modern “pirates” on the internet who fight against this?

Kim Dotcom

As a teenager, Kim Dotcom earned a reputation in his native Germany for cracking corporate PBX systems in the United States, and tried to parlay it into a career in data security. In 2001, Dotcom purchased $375,000 worth of shares of the nearly bankrupt company LetsBuyIt.com and subsequently announced his intention to invest €50 million in the company.On 21 March 2005, Dotcom founded Megaupload Limited, a Hong Kong-based file hosting and sharing business that eventually became the 13th most popular site on the internet with over 150 employees, US $175 million revenues, 50 million visitors daily, and estimated to be responsible at its peak for 4% of all internet traffic.

Julian Assange

Julian Paul Assange is an Australian publisher, journalist, media and internet entrepreneur, media critic, writer, computer programmer and political/internet activist. He is the editor in chief and founder of WikiLeaks – international online self-described not-for-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources, news leaks, and whistleblowers.

Shawn Fanning

Shawn Fanning is an American computer programmer, serial entrepreneur, and angel investor. He developed Napster, one of the first popular peer-to-peer (“P2P”) file sharing platforms, in 1998. Soon after, however, Napster was the target of several music industry-backed lawsuits, which ultimately led to the end of the service.

Sean Parker

Sean Parker is an American technology businessman and entrepreneur. He co-founded Napster, Plaxo, Causes, and Airtime. He was Facebook’s founding president. As of the third quarter of 2011, Parker’s net worth was estimated to be $2.1 billion.

Niklas Zennström

Niklas Zennström is an entrepreneur best known for founding several high-profile online ventures with Janus Friis including Skype and Kazaa. More recently he founded the investment group Atomico and has become a significant figurehead for entrepreneurs in the tech sector. Kazaa was commonly used to exchange MP3 music files and other file types, such as videos, applications, and documents over the internet. The Kazaa Media Desktop client could be downloaded free of charge; however, it was bundled with adware and for a period there were “No spyware” warnings found on Kazaa’s website.

Christopher Poole

Christopher Poole is an American internet entrepreneur from New York City, noted for founding the websites 4chan and Canvas. 4chan is an English-language imageboard website. Launched on October 1, 2003, its boards were originally used for the posting of pictures and discussion of manga and anime. Users generally post anonymously and the site has been linked to Internet subcultures and activism, most notably Project Chanology. 4chan users have been responsible for the formation or popularization of Internet memes such as lolcats, Rickrolling, “Chocolate Rain”, Pedobear, and many others.

Jay Freeman “Saurik”

Freeman first released Cydia in February 2008 as an open-source alternative to Installer.app on iPhone OS 1.1, but Cydia quickly became the most popular package manager after iPhone OS 2.0′s release in July 2008. In August 2009, Freeman said “about 4 million, or 10 percent of the 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners to date, have installed Cydia. In September 2010, Freeman’s company, SaurikIT, LLC, announced that it had acquired Rock Your Phone, Inc. (makers of Rock.app), which made the Cydia Store the largest third-party app store for jailbroken iOS devices. In December 2010, Freeman announced plans to also release a Cydia Store for Mac OS X as a supplement, not an alternative, to Apple’s Mac App Store. As of April 2011, Cydia had $10 million in annual revenue and 4.5 million weekly users, with $250,000 in profit after taxes annually.

Bram Cohen

Bram Cohen  is an American computer programmer, best known as the author of the peer-to-peer (P2P) BitTorrent protocol, as well as the first file sharing program to use the protocol, also known as BitTorrent. He is also the co-founder of CodeCon, organizer of the San Francisco Bay Area P2P-hackers meeting, and the co-author of Codeville.

Mark Howard Gorton

Mark Howard Gorton is the creator of LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file sharing client for the Java Platform, and chief executive of the Lime Group. Lime Group, based in New York, owns LimeWire as well as Lime Brokerage LLC (a stock brokerage), Tower Research Capital LLC (a hedge fund), and LimeMedical LLC (a medical software company).In November 2010, as a response to the legal challenges regarding LimeWire, an anonymous individual by the handle of Meta Pirate released a modified version of LimeWire Pro, which was entitled LimeWire Pirate Edition. It came without the Ask.com toolbar, advertising, spyware, and backdoors, as well as all dependencies on LimeWire LLC servers.

Peter Sunde

He is best known for being a co-founder and ex-spokesperson of The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent search engine. On 17 April 2009, Sunde and his co-defendants were found to be guilty of “assisting in making copyright content available” in the Stockholm district court (tingsrätt). Each defendant was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay damages of 30 million SEK (approximately €2,740,900 or US$3,620,000), to be apportioned between the four defendants.[8] After the verdict a press conference was held where Sunde held up a handwritten IOU statement claiming that is all the damages he will pay, adding “Even if I had any money I would rather burn everything I own and not even give them the ashes. They could have the job of picking them up. That’s how much I hate the media industry.”

Hana Beshara

NinjaVideo was a website created in February 2008 containing links to uploaded videos of TV shows, movies, and documentaries. Since June 30, 2010, the site has been unavailable, as a result of a multinational anti-piracy effort led by the US federal government. Originally optimistic that her actions were in a “gray area” of the law, the co-founder and public face of NinjaVideo, Hana Beshara, pled guilty to conspiracy and criminal copyright infringement on September 30, 2011. She was sentenced to 22 months in prison, another two years probation after that, 500 hours of community service and she has to pay back the $209,896.95 that she supposedly made from NinjaVideo to the MPAA.

Intensegrity

A swarm of colorful hair ties twists and dances through a framework of lollipop sticks; the structure is held in a delicate balance by their mutual tug-of-war. The entire structure is quite small—7cm in diameter, or about the size of a tennis ball.

Möbius Clips

Putting yet another twist on binder clips, these 110 colorful clips are linked by the handles to form a Möbius-like strip. Much like a Möbius strip, this strip has a single side and a single edge. But whereas a true Möbius strip has a single half-twist, this figure has five.

Paperclip Snub Dodecahedron

A snub dodecahedron made from 120 paperclips. I designed this in response to George Hart’s paperclip snub dodecahedron challenge, imposing a few additional constraints of my own: the paperclips should support themselves without glue, solder, etc., and the pieces should be recognizable as paperclips, with as little modification as possible. In this design, half of the paperclips have been bent at the middle, and the other half are intact and outline the central triangles.

Impenetraball

The Impenetraball protects its hollow interior with a dense, chainmail-like mesh made from 132 binder clips. The weave pattern complements the dimensions of these binder clips, exploiting the fact that a handle just barely fits around the body of a neighboring clip (both lengthwise and widthwise). This also makes for an assembler’s worst nightmare; a good pair of small needle-nose pliers and a great deal of patience are essential.

Stressful

The handles of six binder clips weave together in a way that holds all clips open. This “explosive” configuration is quite stable despite its high potential energy. I will leave the construction method as an entertaining puzzle. Here’s a hint: you should need to strain your hands no more than when normally opening a binder clip.

Zodiac

Many binder clips are interlocked into an airy ball composed of 20 hexagons and 12 stars. There are 90 clips but only 120 handles: each clip in the middle of a star is missing one handle. If these were put back in, the polyhedral structure would correspond to a “rectified truncated icosahedron,” obtained by replacing each vertex of a “soccer ball” polyhedron with a triangle.

Triskewers

A subset of an infinite, repeating arrangement of interwoven cylinders, made from 144 wooden skewers and held together with glue. The skewers form four identical, intersecting triangular prisms, giving the figure chiral tetrahedral symmetry—or chiral cubic symmetry if the spiked and non-spiked ends are not distinguished. The high density packing and repetitive lattice pattern create mesmerizing networks of passageways through the sculpture.

Black Hole

Thirty lollipop sticks are pulled toward the middle of the Black Hole by rubberbands; the sticks desperately oppose their crushing doom by bracing against each other. From the equilibrium emerges this dodecahedrally-symmetric form. Each stick is supported against the central pull by four other sticks, and in turn it helps brace four more sticks. So in total, each stick touches eight others.

Polypolypolyhedron

The Polypolypolyhedron is an orderly mess of 60 woven plastic rods. The rods come in six groups of 5 and 10 groups of 3, where the rods in each group bend their way through the busy central interchange and have their ends fastened to each other with rubber bands. All of the 5-fold groups are identical, as are all 3-fold groups: the figure has dodecahedral symmetry.

Poker Faces

Thirty standard playing cards are carefully slit and assembled into a configuration of six intersecting pentagonal prisms. Four of the prisms display royal flushes, the luckiest hands in poker. This sculpture is quite lucky geometrically as well: it is only possible because the aspect ratio of standard poker cards, namely 88mm/63mm≈1.397, is sufficiently close to 5−5√2≈1.382. This number is the unique rectangle size that allows the prisms’ edges to meet at 12 five-way junctures.

Benetton is now promoting a new initiative, called simply Unhate, in support of the Unhate Foundation. It’s meant to promote peace and harmony between people of different cultures – and what better way to do that than by presenting leaders of different cultures sharing the love. One photo shows the Pope kissing another man in the mouth, and it will be pulled from the campaign.

Pope kissing Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb

Benetton said on Wednesday that it was pulling a photo montage of the pope kissing Egypt’s Sheikh al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb that was part of a new global ad campaign and that had outraged the Vatican. In a separate statement, Benetton says it was never its intention to offend, but rather to use the Pope’s image to spread a message of peace and love, or, as the name of the campaign says, Unhate.

This is the celebration of the vegetarian festival in Phuket, Thailand. The local Chinese community believe that abstaining from meat and other stimulants, as well as self-punishment, drilling of body parts, can bring them peace of mind, health and welfare. The festival begins on the first evening of the ninth lunar month of Chinese calendar and lasts for nine days. How can sticking of diferent weird objects bring you peace? This ambient advertisement campaign was launched by Oldtimer restaurants, a leading Austrian chain of motorway rest stops. The campaign aims at enticing people to take a halt at the restaurant to which provides almost everything that one can eat. The huge poster was placed at the entrance of a tunnel at the highway that gave impression that vehicles going inside is disappearing into the woman’s mouth appearing on the poster.

In Indonesia, Ogilvy & Mather created for Formula Toothcare a creative billboard showing a man trying to rip it with his teeth. The ad is an attempt to convince people to build better teeth by using the toothpaste brand of the company. Even though we don’t know whether it worked to drive up sales, we are sure that it caused people to have a wider smile.

Here is a unique way to remind people to buckle up in the back seat. Created by Clement BBDO in Austalia, this billboard displays a huge slingshot in 3d which appears to propel a passenger into the air. The message is clear, belt up or your body will be slinked.

This piece from AMV BBDO for The Economist won a large number of awards back in 2004 including Gold in Eurobest, for Publications & Media for their bright concept. In the process of scarification, scars are formed by cutting or branding the skin. There are many reasons why people may turn to scarification. Aesthetically, scarifications are usually more visible on darker skinned people than tattoos. Also, unlike tattoos, scarifications are a product of one’s own body.

There are also religious and social reasons for scarification. According to some tribal belief in Africa, producing scars on newborn children helps preventing vision related illness. There may also be religious expressions used in the scarification process.

Scarification is not a precise art; there are many variables, such as skin type, depth of the cut, and how the wound is treated while healing, that make the outcome somewhat unpredictable.

The body creates the scar, not the artist; it is important to keep in mind that a method that works well on one person may not work so well on another. Also, the scars tend to spread a bit as they heal, so scarifications are usually relatively simple designs — small details can easily get swallowed up in the healing process.
