Southwest Airlines significantly increased its operations at BWI Airport, more low cost flights are available to the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

The MARC and Amtrak train station is nearby offering train service to Union Station and to Prince George’s County, Maryland. BWI is a test site for the Department of Homeland Security and is used to try out new airport security screening methods. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (IATA: BWI, ICAO: KBWI, FAA LID: BWI) is an international commercial airport serving the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area in the United States. It is commonly called BWI, BWI Airport or BWI Marshall, BWI being an initialism for "Baltimore/Washington International" and the facility's IATA Airport Code. The airport is located in northern unincorporated Anne Arundel County, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Baltimore and 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Washington, D.C. It is adjacent to the Linthicum CDP.

It is named after Thurgood Marshall, a Baltimore native and the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. BWI is a secondary hub for AirTran Airways and a focus city for Southwest Airlines and Cape Air. 20.96 million passengers passed through BWI in 2009, up 2.78% from 2008's 20.49 million, making it the 24th busiest airport in North America.

The airport was also ranked 47th in the world in total aircraft movements. In 2010 BWI was ranked as the best airport of its size (15-25 mil. passengers) in the world by the Airports Council International based on its 2009 Airport Service Quality survey.

An answer from one forum member to a member asking if there were any trains running between BWI and Frederick Maryland:

"In theory", you could take the train from BWI to Frederick. This could only be done on a weekday, and would involve taking the MARC train from BWI (Penn Line) into Washington DC and taking another MARC train (Brunswick Line) out to Frederick County, to be met by a bus at the train station that would take you to Frederick.
I would only recommend this if budget is a real issue, as the time and effort involved would be a real pain imo.

So how are you going to get to BWI?

You *could* drive, pay to park, wait for the bus to take FROM the parking spot...

You *could* avoid traffic headaches and get picked up from where ever you are and let a shuttle take you *and* pick you up.

I just picked my daughter up from BWI recently, she flew on Southwest (as so many do), the flight was delayed from the bad weather on the Atlantic. I got ready to pick her up at BWI from 4:00 PM, flight was supposed to land at 6:00 PM, they didn't get on the plane until 7:00 PM

I'd already driven from Frederick Maryland to BWI, she didn't arrive at BWI until 9:00 PM.

We got home at 10:30 PM

So...that's 6 and a half hours of MY time... Sedan Service sounds pretty good to me right now!

In return every taxi is periodically inspected for safety, and must charge the same metered rate--about $1.50 or $2 to get in the cab; about $1.50 per mile; and wait time of about $12-$30 per hour, which kicks in when the cab is stationary or moving less than ten mph. (This compensates the driver for traffic.) Thus a two- or three-mile trip costs about $5 in rich countries.

In much of the developing world, however, there is little or no regulation of the taxi business. Anyone who has a car can become a taxi driver. It thus becomes dog-eat-dog for customers, with a bargaining system evolving that favors locals who know the score, and rips-off those who don't.

Taxi scams involving money are one of the most common travel scams. Overseas travelers should be especially aware of this scam. Not knowing the native language of a country or its currency can lead to a driver taking advantage of them.

Check that doors can be opened and unlocked from inside the car before stepping into it. Some taxi drivers use child-locking features or remove handles to demand money from riders before unlocking the doors and letting them out of the vehicle.

Keep an eye on the meter. Taxi drivers who claim that the meter is broken, unnecessary or not part of the taxi driving protocol may be interested in overcharging you for your fare. With the inauguration expected to be one of the biggest events in Washington DC history it's a safe bet the cab companies, limo companies and sedan companies that serve Montgomery County, Loudoun County, Howard County and Frederick County are all going to be booked.

year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is
this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater.
This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the
sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature.

It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose,
which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn
good plan, and I've used it several times with no
complaints.

What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is
take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit.
This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like
working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt
started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only
made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to
burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage
was done. In agony I realized what had happened.

The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped
it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my
back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it However, the crack
of my butt was not as fortunate.

When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually
grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt.

I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the
communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact
that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing
hysterically.

Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to
make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totaling
thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to
begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the
surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet.

As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of
laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream
and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the
chamber.

The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two
days because my butt was swollen shut.

So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about
how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up

Thinking of flying into BWI for the Inauguration?

WTOP radio today reported that almost all available rooms in Washington DC area hotels are booked solid. People are actually renting out the spare bedrooms in there homes!!

The historic election is predicted to draw the largest crowds ever to the DC area.

If you're planning on attending this dramatic event, it really looks like you're going to have to secure a hotel room far away from the Nations Capitol...

Which means you'll probably be taking a taxi from the suburbs of Washington to downtown. However it IS possible to take the subway, DC's subway system is called Metro. Washington's Metro is among the finest mass transit systems in the country.

If you don't know much about the Washington area and are only flying into BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport for the momentous occasion, the first Black President in the history of our country, you may be in for a surprise...

Not all DC suburbs are created equal!

The nicest neighborhoods are to the North and West of DC.
Montgomery County and Northern Virginia are two of the ritziest areas in the US to stay at, they're also one of the safest to stay at. Both areas had property values actually INCREASE rather than drop.

So if you're wanting to come into BWI and stay in a safe suburb, I recommend staying in either Montgomery County or Frederick County, taking a cab to the Gaithersburg Metro Station for your visit.

Sober ride - FREE cab ride home

The Washington DC area is blessed to have Sober Ride, a program provided by W.R.A.P.

If you're enjoying yourself a little too much at a bar or party and get too drunk to drive home you can call a cab company and Sober Ride will pay the cab fare home.

Currently, SoberRide operates during the December/January holiday season, St. Patrick's Day, Independence Day and Halloween.

WRAP's SoberRide provides a free cab ride home up to a $50 fare.
Callers are financially responsible for anything over $50

Why can't we get WRAP's SoberRide to operate up here where we live in Frederick County?

Why is the cut off for SoberRide in Rockville?

I mean, come on, the City of Frederick is Maryland's second largest city!

Worsening Economy means Better Cab Drivers!

When the economy is going Gang Busters the pool of available cab drivers simply sucks.

There is no 'candy coating' way of putting this inescapable fact.

It's hard enough in Frederick Maryland to get good drivers to want to work the hours a 24/7/365 taxicab company works...

Imagine how hard it used to be to get competent drivers to take affluent people to BWI or other Washington area airports.

It's worse for Montgomery County Maryland's available conscientious cab drivers.
Just look at some statistics for Montgomery County Maryland employment:

Now that the market is so volatile, more blue collar people will be looking for some extra security, fearing the loss of their main job perhaps.

The folks that are frequent business flyers are, let's face it, in the upper echelons of the salary levels possible in the US.

Business owners, entrepreneurs and high powered executives learn to live on twice a month paychecks (some even get paid ONCE a month). This is totally unheard of and completely unacceptable to the workforce that earns less than $20,000 a year.

High Rolling employers (can we say Oligarchy?) dismiss lower level employees as 'they did this to themselves', '...shoulda went to college like me'

Want a clue to fill your companies help wanted ranks?

Pay every day, at least do away with the 'two weeks till you draw a check'
and don't even start on the 'bi monthly pay' because you've got to pay the accountant half as often bit...
