Would you recommend becoming a graphic designer? (you don’t want to hear what I think.) 2025 marks my 20th year running BXC. That’s a lie: it’s actually been 40. At 22 and with big dreams, I left New Jersey, drove, and camped my way to California. I sold my Harley to buy a Macintosh IIci and landed my first real “graphic designer” job. A few brag-worthy full-time gigs followed: Surfing Magazine in San Clemente, a fashion agency in downtown L.A., a tech agency in Austin, Texas, and a 6 year stint in Santa Cruz working for Jack O’Neill and his legendary wetsuit family. Since founding BXC in 2005, alongside many talented designers, writers, photographers, illustrators, and apprentices, we’ve helped create and design for over 150 brands—brands you know and probably have in your garage, fridge or toy box. These days, it’s just me, a few great clients, and some new tools. Thanks for your support and sharing your dreams with me.

A new startup client from KickStarter GolfKicks.com. Now taking orders and kicking grass! Go check out the the cool new product, Turn your ordinary sneakers into extraordinary golf shoes. Just screw the golf spike cleat into the sole rubber base and done. We will be seeing this converting Vans and flip flops all over the green’s next spring! Go buy some. There cheaper than balls. It’s official. Summer’s over! BXC (branding-by-context) is now working with southern California’s “locals” snow resort Mountain High, Wrightwood, California. We’ll be helping with their overall branding refresh, ad campaign, on-site graphics, swag and other marketing materials for the 2017/2018 winter season. A couple of small projects we worked on with Trace Action-sports tracker. The icon set is now used on the website, packaging and manuals. I have a Trace on my surfboard and it’s completely addicting. You can review your ride, paddle distance, turns, speed and wave count. No more asking a surf bro  “Did you get that??!?”

Sweet Sweat is re entering the sports fitness market with a larger more robust training system that ties into their nutrition and gel products and will include from neoprene trimmer belts to abrollers and power bands. BXC and their team redesigned and custom engineered the packaging and inspired an overall company brand update that can be see at retail (Amazon and direct) and at their trade show booth and website.

I think thats cool?! Yes it’s cool.

The actual retail ready TRAGO.co bottles arrived today. I believe these will be sold in REI this spring. The TRAGO bottle measures your H2O consumption and syncs that data with the TRAGO app which intern syncs said data to most exercise apps. You’re probably already using one. The BXC team nicelogo.com designed the packaging and product manuals. The packaging was printed on a vinyl substrate in 4-color. It required no gluing and only a die cut, no prefolding and 3 scores. Shipped to the warehouse flat. We used the product form to help hold the neck in place and allow the shopper to spin the material on the J-hook without stress to the product package.

A quick portfolio update from BXC. Hot off the press at CRW. A beautiful premium soft-touch brilliant white card stock with a custom copper and gold foil stamp. DUBS Men’s grooming packaging.

Dubs stopped by my studio today to drop off his latest packaging updates. I help him a few months ago. We got these little balm cans and boxes ready for a major retailer presentation that from what I hear went very well.

How to price Graphic Design Services and Packaging.

I say this with great pride. Over the past 25 years I have had countless requests from fellow designers to share my contracts and proposals with them and I do. We all need to do our part to create a level playing field where artists and art buyers are in tune with industry expectations. Especially today with the world’s door left wide open on the interwebs. It seems to a lot of business people buying and quoting creative remains a great mystery and long kept secret. It’s not. It’s all right here in the Graphic Artist Guild’s Handbook “Pricing and Ethical Guidelines”. This is and has been my go-to reference for almost everything about quoting, contracts and the basics of being a professional creative. It’s not just for creatives. It’s also for buyers of branding, illustration, packaging, graphics and most design services.
