There is nothing wrong with sampling as an idea.

The problem is that too much of it still runs on mechanics that belong to an earlier era.

Free sample distribution can be messy, expensive and difficult to scale properly. Voucher-led campaigns can generate activity without giving brands much clarity on what actually happened. And some cashback journeys still create more friction than they remove.

So while sampling continues to sound attractive in strategy decks, the reality is often less convincing once the campaign ends.

Plenty of movement. Not enough visibility. Too much guesswork.

That is why digital sampling is becoming more interesting again, but only when it is built in a way that is easier to measure.

The weakness in a lot of traditional sampling

A lot of sampling activity still gets judged on soft signals.

Reach. Participation. Redemption. Engagement.

Those numbers can be useful, but they do not always tell you enough about whether the campaign actually drove meaningful customer action.

That is the core issue.

Brands are under more pressure than ever to justify spend more clearly, and sampling should not get a free pass just because it feels like a proven brand mechanic. If a campaign drives trial, you should be able to understand that properly. If it influences purchase, you should be able to see that more clearly. If it is worth repeating, there should be evidence.

Too often, there is not enough of that.

Why cashback changes the model

Cashback makes digital sampling more commercially interesting because it creates a more direct exchange.

The customer has a clear reason to buy. The promotion is tied more closely to a real purchase. And when the journey is built properly, the brand gets more than a participation number at the end of it.

That matters.

Because the real question is not whether someone clicked on an ad or claimed an offer. It is whether the campaign created a useful, measurable commercial outcome.

Who bought? Where did they buy? When did they buy? Which activity actually drove the response?

Those are much better questions, and they lead to much better campaign thinking.

The bigger opportunity is not just cashback

The most interesting part of this model is not simply that a shopper gets money back after purchase.

It is that, when done well, the campaign can create a richer layer of purchase-linked insight around that transaction.

That is where digital sampling starts to look far more commercially relevant.

Instead of ending with a redemption figure and a rough sense of activity, brands can start to understand more about customer behaviour, campaign performance and how promotional spend connects to real buying action.

That is a much more valuable outcome than just saying a campaign “performed well”.

This is where the better models are heading

The stronger promotional mechanics now are the ones that balance two things properly:

a low-friction experience for the customer

better accountability for the brand

That is the shift.

Not just more attractive offers. Better mechanics.

Not just more campaign activity. Better visibility.

Not just more redemptions. Better understanding of what actually drove them.

That is why digital sampling with cashback feels like a more serious commercial tool than older, looser sampling models.

A good example of that shift

Retail Convert is a good example of where this is heading.

Full disclosure: I’m involved in the company, so I’ve got a direct view of how cashback, verified purchases and Open Banking can make digital sampling campaigns more measurable in practice.

What I find compelling about the model is that it is not just trying to make cashback more convenient. It is trying to make the whole campaign more accountable.

That means a smoother customer journey, purchase verification and richer insight through Open Banking, giving brands a more useful view of what their campaigns are actually delivering.

You can see that approach here: Digital Sampling with Cashback

Final thought

Sampling still has a role.

But it needs to evolve.

If brands are going to keep investing in trial-driving campaigns, the mechanics need to do more than create surface-level activity. They need to reduce friction, improve visibility and produce better commercial learning.

That is why digital sampling becomes much more interesting when cashback is part of a more measurable model.

Not because it sounds newer.

Because it is easier to justify.

The post Why Digital Sampling Needs Better Measurement first appeared on By the Scruff.

The post How Much Should Roofers Spend on Google Ads? first appeared on By the Scruff.

Most roofers ask the wrong question about Google Ads.

They ask:

“How little can we spend to see if it works?”

A better question is:

“What budget gives us a fair chance of generating enough enquiries to judge the campaign properly?”

Because Google Ads can work very well for roofing companies. But only if the campaign has enough budget to gather data, drive clicks, generate enquiries, and improve over time.

Spend too little and you do not really test Google Ads. You just buy a handful of expensive clicks and hope one turns into a job.

That is not a strategy.

So, what is a sensible Google Ads budget for roofers?

For most roofing companies, we recommend starting with an ad spend of around £1,000 per month.

That does not include management fees. That is the media spend paid directly to Google.

In some smaller or less competitive areas, you may be able to start lower. But for many roofing businesses, especially those covering busy towns, cities or competitive areas, £1,000 per month is a more realistic starting point.

Why?

Because roofing clicks can be expensive. You are competing for high-value work. A new roof, flat roof replacement, emergency roof repair or commercial roofing job can be worth hundreds or thousands of pounds.

That means other roofing companies are willing to pay to get in front of those searches.

Why £200 per month usually does not work

A lot of businesses want to “test” Google Ads with a very small budget.

The problem is that a £200 monthly budget can disappear quickly.

If clicks cost £5, that gives you around 40 clicks per month.

If clicks cost £10, that gives you around 20 clicks per month.

That is not much data.

Out of those clicks, not everyone will call or complete a form. Some people will compare quotes. Some will click by mistake. Some will not be in your service area. Some will be looking for something you do not actually want to sell.

So, with a very small budget, you might only generate a couple of enquiries. Or none at all.

That does not mean Google Ads cannot work.

It usually means the test was too small to prove anything useful.

What does £1,000 per month actually give you?

A £1,000 monthly ad budget gives the campaign more room to work.

It gives you enough clicks to start seeing patterns:

Which keywords are generating enquiries

Which areas are performing best

Which searches are wasting money

Which ads are getting attention

Which services are attracting better leads

Whether the landing page is converting

This is where the campaign starts to become useful.

The first month is rarely perfect. The goal is not to launch and immediately have everything nailed. The goal is to get real search data, remove waste, improve the campaign and focus spend where it is most likely to produce proper roofing enquiries.

Example roofing Google Ads budgets

These figures are only examples, because costs vary by area and competition. But they show the difference between testing properly and barely testing at all.

Monthly ad spend

What it usually means

£250–£500

Very limited test. May work in a small area, but data will be thin.

£1,000

Sensible starting point for many roofing companies. Enough to begin generating useful data.

£2,000

Stronger budget with more room to test services, locations and keywords.

£3,000+

Better for competitive areas, multiple services or larger roofing businesses wanting consistent lead flow.

The right budget depends on your goals.

If you only want a few extra repair jobs each month, your budget may be different from a roofing company trying to grow aggressively across multiple towns.

The budget should match the value of the work

This is the bit many businesses miss.

A roofer does not need hundreds of leads for Google Ads to be worthwhile.

If one new roof job is worth several thousand pounds, the numbers can work with a relatively small number of good enquiries.

The question is not just:

“How much does a lead cost?”

The better question is:

“How much are we willing to spend to win the right type of job?”

A £100 lead might sound expensive. But if it turns into a £5,000 roofing job, it could be a very good lead.

On the other hand, a £20 lead that wastes your time, asks for the cheapest possible repair and never books anything is not especially valuable.

Lead quality matters more than lead volume.

Not all roofing leads are equal

Different roofing services will perform differently in Google Ads.

For example:

Emergency roof repairs may generate urgent calls

Flat roof repairs may be highly specific

New roof enquiries may take longer to convert

Commercial roofing leads may be lower volume but higher value

Guttering and small repairs may bring in more enquiries but lower job values

This is why your campaign should not treat every click the same.

If your most profitable work is flat roofing, the campaign should reflect that.

If emergency repairs are easiest to convert, that should shape the keyword strategy, ad copy and landing page.

If small repairs are not worth chasing, you should avoid spending too much budget on them.

What affects the cost of Google Ads for roofers?

Several factors influence how much you need to spend.

Location

A roofer advertising in a competitive city will usually need a higher budget than a roofer targeting a smaller local area.

London, Essex, Hertfordshire and other busy areas can be competitive because there are more roofing companies bidding for the same searches.

Competition

If several roofing companies are aggressively advertising in your area, click costs can rise.

This does not mean you should avoid Google Ads. It just means the campaign needs to be sharper.

Services

Some roofing services are more valuable and more competitive than others.

Keywords around new roofs, roof replacement, emergency repairs and flat roofing may cost more than lower-value or less urgent searches.

Landing page quality

A poor landing page wastes budget.

If someone clicks your ad and lands on a slow, vague or confusing page, they are less likely to enquire.

A strong landing page should make it obvious:

What roofing services you offer

Where you work

Why someone should trust you

How to contact you

What to do next

Tracking

Without proper tracking, you cannot see what is working.

You need to track calls, forms and meaningful enquiries. Otherwise, you may keep spending money on keywords that generate clicks but no real jobs.

What should your first month of spend be used for?

The first month should not be treated as a magic switch.

It should be treated as a controlled test.

The aim is to find out:

Which search terms are triggering your ads

Which keywords are worth keeping

Which keywords need to be blocked

Which locations are producing enquiries

Whether people are calling or filling in forms

Whether the landing page is doing its job

Whether the enquiries are commercially useful

This is why very small budgets are difficult. There is not enough activity to make confident decisions.

With a sensible budget, you can start cutting waste and improving performance.

Why cheap campaigns often become expensive

A cheap Google Ads campaign can become expensive very quickly if it is badly set up.

Common problems include:

Targeting too wide an area

Using broad keywords without control

Sending traffic to the homepage

Not using negative keywords

Not tracking phone calls

Running ads for low-value services

Leaving poor-performing keywords active

Using generic ad copy

Not checking search terms regularly

You might spend less each month, but if most of the budget is wasted, the campaign is still expensive.

A better campaign is not just about spending more. It is about spending properly.

How to decide your roofing Google Ads budget

Start with the commercial outcome.

Ask:

What type of roofing jobs do we want more of?

What is an average job worth?

How many extra jobs per month would make the campaign worthwhile?

What area do we want to cover?

How competitive is that area?

Can we answer calls quickly?

Do we have a landing page that can convert traffic?

From there, you can set a budget that has a realistic chance of working.

For many roofing companies, that means starting around £1,000 per month and increasing once the campaign proves it can generate the right type of enquiry.

Should roofers spend more once the campaign works?

Yes, if the numbers make sense.

Once you know the campaign is generating profitable leads, increasing the budget can help bring in more enquiries.

But scaling should be controlled.

Do not just double the spend and hope for the best. Look at which keywords, services and locations are working. Then put more budget behind those areas.

The aim is not just more clicks.

The aim is more profitable roofing work.

The simple answer

For most roofers, a sensible Google Ads test starts at around £1,000 per month in ad spend.

Less than that can work in some situations, but it often makes the test too limited.

If you want consistent enquiries, useful data and a fair chance of success, the campaign needs enough budget to breathe.

Google Ads is not about spending the least possible.

It is about spending enough, in the right places, to generate roofing enquiries that are worth having.

Want to know what your roofing ads budget could generate?

If you run a roofing company and want to understand what Google Ads could realistically do in your area, we can help.

Tell us where you work, what services you want more of, and what monthly budget you are considering.

We will give you a practical view of whether Google Ads is worth testing, what kind of campaign would make sense, and where the budget is most likely to be wasted.

A business website should do more than look good.

It should help people understand what you do, who you do it for, and why they should take the next step. It should support search visibility, improve user experience, and turn interest into enquiry. Most importantly, it should reflect the business as it is now — not as it was two years ago.

That is exactly why we recently updated our own website.

These changes were not made just to freshen things up visually. They were made because clarity matters. Structure matters. Messaging matters. And if a website does not help the right people understand your value quickly, then it is not working hard enough.

Why businesses outgrow their websites

Most websites are launched with good intentions. But over time, they drift.

Services evolve. Audiences become clearer. Marketing becomes more ambitious. Internal teams need more flexibility. Search behaviour changes. And slowly, without anyone really noticing, the website starts to lag behind the business.

It may still be live. It may still function perfectly well. But that does not mean it is doing the job properly.

I see this often with B2B websites. On the surface, they look presentable enough. But underneath, the same issues keep appearing:

unclear messaging

weak calls to action

poor page structure

generic service pages

confusing user journeys

dated layouts

limited CMS flexibility

weak SEO foundations

These are not just design problems. They are business problems.

If a potential client lands on your site and cannot quickly work out what you do, who you help, and why they should contact you, then your website is creating friction where it should be building confidence.

We updated our website for a simple reason

We wanted it to better reflect how we think, how we work, and what businesses actually need from a modern B2B website.

That meant improving clarity, tightening the structure, and making the journey through the site more intentional. It also meant reviewing the site not as a piece of branding alone, but as a working business tool.

Because that is what a website should be.

Not digital wallpaper. Not an online brochure that sits there quietly in the background. A proper commercial asset that supports marketing, credibility, visibility, and lead generation.

What we changed

The updates we have made are rooted in the same thinking we apply to client work.

Clearer messaging

The first few seconds on any website matter.

Visitors should be able to understand what the business does, who it helps, and whether they are in the right place. If that is not immediately clear, you are asking the user to do too much work.

We refined our messaging to make our offer easier to understand and easier to scan. That sounds simple, but it is one of the most valuable things any business can do.

Better structure and user journeys

A website should guide people.

That does not mean forcing them through a funnel in an obvious way. It means creating a clear and logical path through the content, so users can move naturally from one question to the next.

We improved the way key pages are structured and linked, so visitors can find the right information more easily and move through the site with less friction.

This matters even more when businesses serve different audiences. In one recent website project, the structure needed to support separate journeys for architects and developers as well as homeowners, rather than pushing everyone through the same generic messaging.

That kind of audience-led thinking usually performs far better than broad, catch-all page structures.

Stronger lead generation focus

A good B2B website should support action.

Not in a pushy or over-engineered way, but in a clear and useful one. The next step should feel obvious. Whether that is getting in touch, requesting a quote, viewing a case study, or exploring a service page in more detail, the journey should support momentum.

We reviewed our own site with that in mind, making sure the content does more than explain what we do. It now works harder to support enquiry too.

More flexibility in the CMS

One of the biggest frustrations for marketing teams is having a website that is difficult to manage.

That is why we put so much emphasis on flexible WordPress builds, reusable content blocks, and templates that internal teams can actually use without relying on developers for every update.

This thinking runs through a lot of our client work. In the Engage Education proposal, for example, the focus included improving backend usability, reducing plugin bloat, and creating scalable, SEO-ready templates for easier ongoing management.

The same principle matters on our own site. A website should not just launch well. It should remain easy to evolve.

Better SEO foundations

SEO is not something to bolt on afterwards.

It starts with structure, page hierarchy, relevance, internal linking, and content that aligns with what people are actually searching for. Good SEO is often the result of good thinking upstream.

That is one reason why website improvements should never be viewed purely through a design lens. Better layout, better content structure, and better user journeys all contribute to better performance in search as well.

Design is not the point

This is where I think many website projects go wrong.

Too many conversations still get stuck on surface-level design decisions when the real issues sit underneath. Not whether a button is green or blue, but whether the page makes sense. Not whether the site looks modern, but whether it helps users move forward.

Good B2B website design is not about decoration. It is about decisions.

What does the visitor need to know first?
Who exactly are we speaking to?
What proof do they need?
What should they do next?
Can the internal team manage the site properly once it is live?

That is the level the conversation should happen at.

What better B2B websites actually do

The best B2B websites tend to have a few things in common.

They communicate clearly.
They prioritise user experience.
They support search visibility.
They make content easier to manage.
They create stronger journeys from first visit to enquiry.

That can look different depending on the business.

For some, it means clearer service pages and stronger calls to action.

For others, it means ecommerce capability, better product categorisation, and password-protected access to technical assets. That was a key part of the Deben proposal, where improved UX, ecommerce functionality, and a secure document portal all formed part of the solution.

For others, it means reusable component systems, technical SEO support, and better collaboration between internal teams and partner agencies.

And for more platform-led businesses, it can mean dashboards, permissions, structured content, and scalable architecture. That kind of thinking sits behind projects like Know Your Building, where the platform spans sites, buildings, floors, rooms, permissions, maintenance workflows, and dashboards.

Different businesses need different things. But the principle is always the same: the website has to support how the business actually works and how it wants to grow.

Most businesses do not need more pages — they need better thinking

This is something I believe quite strongly.

When a website is underperforming, the instinct is often to add more. More copy. More pages. More features. More sections. But volume is rarely the real issue.

Usually, the problem is one of clarity.

The messaging is too vague. The structure is muddled. The user journey has never really been thought through. Or the CMS is so awkward that the site slowly becomes harder to maintain and improve.

A smaller, sharper, better-structured website will usually outperform a larger, messier one.

That is why we always come back to fundamentals:

clear positioning

strong hierarchy

defined user journeys

useful content

straightforward calls to action

a flexible CMS

sound SEO foundations

Get those things right and the website becomes far more valuable.

Final thought

We updated our website because we believe a business website should earn its place.

It should not just sit there looking presentable. It should actively support the business behind it. It should help the right people understand your value, build trust quickly, trust quickly, and make taking the next step feel easy.

That is what we want from our own website, and it is what we aim to build into every client project too.

If your website no longer reflects your services, your audience, or your ambitions, that is usually a sign that something needs to be sharpened. Not always rebuilt from scratch — but definitely reconsidered.

Because better B2B website design is not really about looking newer.

It is about working harder.

Ready to make your website work harder?

If your current website feels outdated, unclear, difficult to manage, or simply not as effective as it should be, now is a good time to review it.

At By the Scruff, we design and build B2B websites that are clearer, more flexible, and better aligned with how businesses actually grow.

If you would like a fresh view on your website, get in touch and we’ll help you identify what is working, what is not, and where the biggest opportunities are.

Digital marketing rarely fails because people aren’t trying hard enough.

More often, it fails quietly — while everyone stays busy.

I’ve seen this play out in established businesses that have invested properly in digital. They’ve hired good people, worked with capable agencies, and put modern platforms in place. On paper, things should work. In practice, confidence starts to slip.

Performance becomes unpredictable. Decisions feel riskier than they should. And when something goes wrong, it’s not always clear who owns the call.

That’s usually the point where digital leadership is missing.

When activity replaces direction

In many organisations, digital marketing grows in layers. A new agency is brought in. A platform is upgraded. A campaign is added to solve a short-term problem. None of these decisions are wrong on their own.

The issue is what happens over time.

Marketing, websites, systems, and data begin to drift apart. Everyone is focused on their piece of the puzzle, but no one is responsible for how it all fits together. Meetings multiply. Reporting increases. Progress feels slower, not faster.

There’s plenty of activity, but very little confidence in where things are heading.

Digital marketing becomes an operational risk

At a certain scale, digital marketing stops being just a marketing problem.

It affects how leads come into the business, how sales teams plan, how data flows between systems, and how exposed the organisation is when something breaks. Decisions about campaigns start to carry technical and commercial consequences.

When leadership isn’t clear, those decisions either get delayed or pushed down the line to people who shouldn’t be carrying that level of risk.

That’s when digital starts to feel fragile.

The moment people notice

This gap usually becomes visible during change.

An in-house lead moves on. A long-standing agency relationship ends. Budgets increase and scrutiny follows. Or performance simply plateaus and no one can explain why.

The question shifts from “what should we do next?” to “who is actually setting direction here?”

That’s not a tooling issue. It’s a leadership one.

What digital leadership actually provides

Good digital leadership doesn’t mean doing everything, or dictating solutions.

It’s about having someone senior enough to slow things down when needed, challenge assumptions before money is spent, and make decisions with a view beyond the next campaign or quarter.

It’s also about accountability. When someone owns direction, teams move faster because decisions stick. Agencies perform better because expectations are clear. Digital investment starts to feel deliberate rather than reactive.

Why fractional leadership fits reality

For many established businesses, the need for digital leadership isn’t permanent.

It’s often tied to transition — a period of change, growth, restructuring, or uncertainty. Hiring a full-time Digital Director in the middle of that can feel like a leap, especially when the shape of the role is still emerging.

Fractional digital leadership gives organisations access to experienced judgement at the moment it’s needed most, without forcing a long-term decision before there’s clarity.

It creates space to stabilise, reset direction, and move forward with confidence.

A more useful starting point

When digital marketing feels busy but underwhelming, the instinct is often to add more — more campaigns, more tools, more suppliers.

In my experience, the better question is simpler:

Who is accountable for direction right now?

If you’re dealing with an immediate digital or marketing issue and need experienced direction quickly, a short conversation is often the most effective place to start.

Once upon a time—well, back in the 19th century—the phrase “Black Friday” had nothing to do with bargain hunters elbowing each other for TVs. It actually referred to a financial crisis in 1869, when two chancers tried to corner the gold market, causing chaos in the US economy. Sounds serious, right? Fast-forward to the 1950s, and the term took on a less catastrophic, albeit more chaotic, meaning in Philadelphia. Police officers coined it to describe the bedlam of shoppers and tourists flooding the city after Thanksgiving. Not quite a gold crisis, but still chaotic enough to make law enforcement groan.

By the 1980s, retailers decided to spin this narrative. “Black Friday” was no longer about disorder but about their books going from red (losses) to black (profits). A PR masterstroke, they made it sound like a victory for everyone. You might be getting a discounted microwave, but they’re making off like bandits too. Everyone’s happy—kind of.

Why Retailers Love Black Friday (Especially in the UK)

Now, while this retail extravaganza started across the pond, it didn’t take long for UK retailers to jump on the bandwagon. And why not? Brits love a queue, and they love a bargain. It’s a match made in heaven.

1. Sales Galore

Retailers know that shoppers can’t resist a 50%-off sign. Add the words “limited time only,” and it’s like dangling a cup of tea and a biscuit in front of someone who’s been fasting for a week. For stores, it’s a chance to rake in profits, sometimes in a single day, and kick-start the Christmas shopping frenzy.

2. Goodbye Old Stock

Got a warehouse full of last season’s unsellable gadgets, dodgy jumpers, and questionable kitchen gadgets? Black Friday’s your saviour. Those half-price deals are often less about generosity and more about making space for shiny new stock. “You mean I get a blender with ten attachments for £19.99?” Yes, Sharon, but don’t ask why it’s so cheap.

3. Winning New Customers

Retailers aren’t just after your cash—they’re after your loyalty. You might buy your first discounted smart speaker on Black Friday, but before you know it, you’re subscribed to emails and paying full price for the matching smart toaster in January.

4. Building Hype

Let’s be honest: Black Friday in the UK is about the drama as much as the deals. Who hasn’t seen grainy footage of customers in Asda wrestling over a £5 toaster? It’s great publicity—”Everything must go! And maybe Dave’s pride too, after he scrapped with a stranger in aisle three.”

The Online Twist

Enter the internet, and Black Friday’s gone from a high-street spectacle to a digital battleground. UK retailers like Currys, Argos, and even Tesco have embraced online sales, while Amazon practically invented its own version of Black Friday (with fewer fistfights). You don’t even have to leave your sofa—just make sure your Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out when you’re two clicks away from securing that suspiciously cheap air fryer.

A Uniquely British Black Friday

Unlike the Americans, who approach Black Friday like it’s an Olympic sport, we Brits prefer a more restrained chaos—until we don’t. While many of us grumble about the “Americanisation” of our retail calendar, we still can’t resist logging on at midnight or nipping down to John Lewis for “just a quick look.” It’s a national pastime at this point.

So, whether you’re in the market for a discounted telly or just enjoy the theatre of it all, Black Friday has become a fixture of UK retail life. Just remember to keep calm, carry on, and maybe steer clear of anyone holding a shopping trolley like a battering ram.

The post Black Friday: A Tale of Chaos, Discounts, and Bargain-Hunting Brits first appeared on By the Scruff.

If you’re managing a website or diving into search engine optimisation (SEO), understanding how to find a website sitemap is crucial. A sitemap is a file that provides search engines with a roadmap of your site’s structure, helping them crawl and index your pages more efficiently.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you locate a sitemap on any website.

What Is a Sitemap?

A sitemap is typically an XML file that lists all the URLs on a website. It allows search engines like Google or Bing to discover new pages and updates easily.

There are two main types of sitemaps:

XML Sitemaps: Designed for search engines.

HTML Sitemaps: Designed for website users, offering an organised link structure.

Why Is a Sitemap Important?

Improves SEO: A well-structured sitemap ensures search engines crawl all important pages.

Essential for Large Websites: Sites with hundreds of pages can easily guide crawlers.

Helps with Indexing: Ensures newly created or updated pages are quickly recognised.

How to Find a Website Sitemap

1. Check the Standard URL

Most websites place their sitemaps in a standard location. Try visiting these URLs:

https://example.com/sitemap.xml

https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml

https://example.com/sitemap/

Simply replace
example.com
with the website’s domain.

2. Look for Robots.txt

The robots.txt file often contains a link to the sitemap. Here’s how to find it:

Go to
https://example.com/robots.txt
.

Look for a line starting with
Sitemap:
. For example:
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml

3. Use a Browser Plugin

Certain browser extensions or SEO tools can help locate sitemaps. Tools like Yoast SEO (for WordPress sites) and Screaming Frog SEO Spider often detect sitemaps automatically.

4. Inspect the Website Footer

Some websites include an HTML sitemap link in their footer. Check the bottom of the homepage for any link that says “Sitemap” or similar.

5. Search Google

Perform a Google search using the following query:

site:example.com filetype:xml

Replace
example.com
with the domain of interest. This search often reveals XML sitemaps.

6. Ask the Website Owner

If you’re unable to locate the sitemap, reaching out to the website administrator or the hosting provider is a direct and effective approach.

What If There’s No Sitemap?

If a website doesn’t have a sitemap, you can generate one using tools like:

XML-Sitemaps.com

Yoast SEO Plugin (for WordPress)

Google Search Console

These tools can automatically create sitemaps tailored to your website structure.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to find a website sitemap is a fundamental skill for web developers, SEO professionals, and digital marketers. Whether you’re working on your site or analysing a competitor’s structure, these techniques make the process straightforward.

For long-term SEO success, ensure your website has an updated and accessible sitemap. This ensures that both users and search engines navigate your site effectively.

Are you searching for senior digital leadership, but do not need a full-time hire? I am Stuart Edwards. I help ambitious agencies, brands, and businesses deliver better digital projects. My services allow you to build stronger, more confident teams—without the cost or commitment of hiring a permanent leader.

Who Am I?

With over 20 years of experience, I have guided clients in the UK and beyond. Over the years, I have developed digital strategies, directed creative projects, and delivered complex campaigns. As the founder of By The Scruff, I lead teams and manage digital projects of all sizes. Because of my hands-on approach, I quickly become part of your team and focus on what truly matters.

What Is a Fractional Digital Director?

A Fractional Digital Director offers expert guidance and leadership on a part-time or project basis. Instead of a full-time commitment, you benefit from my skills exactly when you need them. For instance, I can step in for a few days a month, during key projects, or at crucial turning points. This flexible approach saves you time and money, while still providing high-level results.

How I Can Help Your Business

I work with agencies, brands, and in-house teams. For example:

I shape digital strategies aligned with your business goals.

I lead web projects, transformations, and campaigns.

I find smart ways to keep projects moving forward.

I build and mentor collaborative, creative teams.

I identify and remove project bottlenecks.

I offer a fresh, objective perspective during challenges.

Because I focus on your needs, you get solutions tailored for your unique situation.

Real Results for Clients

Clients often face roadblocks, but I help them move forward. For example, I have helped agencies cut project turnaround times in half. Sometimes, I guide businesses through digital relaunches or boost team confidence with targeted support. Most importantly, I deliver practical solutions and renewed momentum.

Why Work with Me?

Expertise on Demand: Access senior-level skills only when you need them.

Flexible & Cost-Effective: Avoid the expense of a permanent hire.

Hands-On Leadership: I work with your team, not just for your team.

Proven Results: My work drives measurable growth and builds high-performing teams.

In addition, my experience means I can jump in quickly and start making an impact.

Is Fractional Digital Leadership Right for You?

In the fast-paced, competitive landscape of London, having a strong digital presence is non-negotiable. Whether you’re a startup in Shoreditch, a boutique in Camden, or a consultancy in Canary Wharf, your website is your shopfront, sales pitch, and customer service assistant all in one. That’s where we come in.

By the Scruff is a creative web design agency with deep London roots and a fresh outlook. We’ve worked with London businesses of all shapes and sizes since 2005 — designing, developing, and optimising websites that look great, perform brilliantly, and convert visitors into loyal customers.

From Shoreditch Roots to Strategic Reach

We were proudly based in Shoreditch, East London’s creative heart, for nearly a decade. In 2020, we relocated to the historic market town of Bishop’s Stortford, East Hertfordshire. This move gave us space to grow while keeping us connected to London’s vibrant business scene — just a short train ride away.

This unique positioning allows us to blend the best of both worlds: the fast-thinking, trend-driven pulse of London with the clarity and focus of a quieter, creative environment. Our clients love that we’re close enough to meet face-to-face when needed but far enough to bring a fresh, strategic view to their digital challenges.

What Makes Our London Web Design Service Different?

Custom-Built WordPress Websites
We don’t do off-the-shelf themes. Every website we build is tailor-made in WordPress, giving you the flexibility to grow and the control to manage your own content.

Designed for People, Optimised for Search
A good-looking site is just the start. We design with users in mind, making sure navigation is intuitive, loading speeds are fast, and SEO foundations are solid.

Tried-and-Tested Collaboration Tools
We use tools like Basecamp and BugHerd to keep projects smooth, transparent, and on time. You’ll always know what’s happening and when.

Ongoing Support and Hosting
Beyond launch, we’re here for the long haul. Our monthly retainers include hosting, updates, and support so you’re never left in the dark.

A Portfolio of London Success Stories

From campaign microsites to full-scale e-commerce builds, we’ve helped London brands tell their story online. Whether it’s launching a retail promotion at Heathrow, refreshing a charity site in Camden, or supporting a fast-growing construction business in East London, we bring creativity, technical know-how, and commercial insight to every brief.

Let’s Build Something Brilliant — Together

If you’re looking for a London web design agency that’s experienced, easy to work with, and focused on real results, let’s talk. We’ll help you clarify your goals, define your audience, and build a site that not only looks fantastic but delivers measurable success.
