Matthew's Room To The Rescue

When it came time to redo Matthew's room, I felt it wasn't up to me to decide the theme. I want him to enjoy his room. Make it space where he can get into character and use his imagination. A place where his friends could come to and have fun. We have plenty of time for a grown-up room. So it was no surprise that Matthew wanted his room to revolve around superheroes. Batman in particular.

My focal point had to be fun and have a comic book vibe. When I found this wallpaper from Murals Wallpaper, I just knew Matthew had to have it in his room. With it being black and white, I could focus on adding punches of color throughout for a fun and vibrant room. The quality of the mural was absolutely perfect and thanks to SuperDad for putting it up without a fuss. It was honestly that easy.

I found these great canvas prints at Homesense and knew it was just perfect for the room. It fit so well with the black and white mural illustration.

We added a touch of DC comic because, as Matthew would say, they are the world's greatest superheroes. From a vintage Superman figure to Flash symbol, this room was ready to fight crime and protect the household.

Matthew was so happy with the final outcome of his room and Daddy was happy that the wallpaper was easy and painless to put up. Next to complete is his closet with a working desk and hideout.

Life Lately

I actually don’t know the last time I did a "Life Lately" So I figured while my two kiddos are in bed and I'm relaxing catching up on some shows, I'd do a very casual post about our lives these days.

Matthew finished daycare and is spending the whole month of August with me at home. He starts kindergarten in just a few weeks. While I'm still completely shocked at how quickly 5 years have gone, I'm emotional about him starting school. I know he's ready but this mama isn't! So before life takes us to bus rides and preparing lunches, I wanted him to stay with me and Emily and do fun things together because the minute I blink my eyes, he won't want to hang with me anymore. Emily is now 4 months old and constantly smiling, She brings so much joy to our lives and I can't help but smile when I see how she looks at her big brother. I swear it would melt your hearts as well. I'll have to do a shoot with them both just to capture some beautiful memories since these photos were just Emily and myself. I think knowing this is my last child and having the time off work to be with my children, I’m trying to stay in the moment and enjoy where we are right now. Being totally present each day is important to me and I have to work hard at it. It's been refreshing. I've stopped obsessing about the numbers and how many followers I have. I feel good knowing it absolutely has no impact on me or how I continue to post or view my social pages.

A Letter To My Daughter

To my little lady,
One year ago, I didn't think you were going to happen. When I found out I was having you, I had this overwhelming joy. You, my dear, are the final piece to our puzzle. We've loved you from the moment we found out we were having you.
How is it possible to love you so much already? I knew you were special, part of my soul. You would be special to your grandmother and aunts because, for some reason, I believe that your great-grandmother sent you to me. She's in you, in small little ways. I'm reminded of her through you and that brings me waves of emotion. She had my heart, the same way you had my heart from the moment I first heard your heartbeat and with my very first look at you when you were born.
Protection. I went into protection mode with you. From my womb to the time you were born, I've had this duty to keep you safe. It's what I do for Matthew, it's what I'll always do for you no matter how much you might be annoyed by it in your teens. It's not going to go away. You might not understand it but know that I only want what's best for you. Living your life to its fullest and becoming a woman of strength, and value, one who never settles. I hope to teach you to be kind to others through words and gestures along with being a strong independent woman.
I want you to explore, by constantly challenging yourself and trying new things. I want to watch you succeed at what life will throw your way by learning from your failures. I want to watch you laugh, cry, get angry, tell jokes and be playful. Emotions make us who we are. As Brigitte Nicole once said "Never apologize for being sensitive or emotional. It's a sign that you have a big heart, and that you aren't afraid to let others see it. Showing your emotions is a sign of strength." Remember these things:

Be yourself. It's ok to change, in fact, change is how you will grow. Just care for your heart and brilliant mind. Cause when you're older and ready to face this crazy world, the world will be ready to care for you as well.
Be grateful. Be grateful for everything that you have, who you are and what you'll become. You, my beautiful girl, are enough.
Be inspiring. Surround yourself with people who will lift you and continuously root for you just as much as you would for them. Stay far away from those who just want to bring you down, because the world has enough of that already.
Be confident. When you see something wrong, do something about it. Stand up for what you believe is right. Do it with humility. Be healthy, be genuine, be kind— this is confidence.
You are loved. Always know that even in your weakest moments, I am proud to be your Mommy. "You were made perfectly to be loved - and surely I have loved you, in the idea of you, my whole life long."

Emily's Nursery Reveal

As with any newborn, bedtime has been so inconsistent lately. Emily and I are still trying to figure each other out and settle into a routine together. Emily had been colicky for a few days (mainly due to me eating cabbage and onions) and nothing I tried was calming her down. I was on the verge of a breakdown (a.k.a. mom guilt) for having contributed to her crankiness. It's true what they say, your 2nd child is not at all like the first and boy am I learning that. Matthew never wanted a pacifier, he always managed to soothe himself. With Emily, I've learned that she likes to soothe herself with her thumb, and I didn't want that bad habit to start. I tried a few different options and found that the MAM Start Newborn pacifier was the one that soothed her the best and consistently. It has been months since Emily's room has been ready. I've been excited to show it to you, but knew the biggest piece of the puzzle was missing – Emily! Now that Emily is 5 weeks old and we are settling into a routine, I found some time to shoot her room and show it to you. I wanted her room to be a place to relax. Between feeding, changing her diaper and some night time cuddling, my goal was for the space to be light, airy and open. So I started my room design with a focal point. I decided I wanted that to be the Floral mural centered over the crib. The crib is special for me because not only was it the crib that Matthew used when he was a baby, it was also the last gift my Nonna Rita gave me before she passed away almost 5 years ago. Emily carries my grandmother's name as her middle name, and I felt it was important to hold on to it just a little bit longer.

There are so many options out there and I"m one to easily get overwhelmed. I knew the layout I wanted and deciding on light fixtures, furniture and decor could pose a big challenge for me. I just knew it had to be clutter free so I kept my accessorizing to a minimum and let the subtle details speak for themselves. Everything is compartmentalized and in order, so things are easy to find and reach. The big pieces help tie the room together but my favorite part is the images hanging over her dresser of our maternity shoot. It embodies the love we had for her while waiting for her arrival and they came out so perfect. I had the images printed on quality photo paper to help preserve that memory for years to come.

What To Pack In Your Hospital Bag - Baby Edition

My hospital bags were packed with the assumption I'd be in the hospital for 2 days. Those 2 days turned into 5. Needless to say, I have learned that nothing ever works out the way you planned. No matter how prepared you are, expect the unexpected.
This time around, I feel like I know with my scheduled c-section I'll be in there for maybe 3 days at most. So I decided to pack early. Now I know 2 months in advance may be crazy, but I feel like she might arrive before her due date and I simply want to be ready to go.
If I knew the first time around what I should bring, I feel like I would have saved my husband multiple trips home and to the store. I think with my first, I was more excited about finally getting to meet Matthew that I forgot about what I needed to pack in my baby hospital bag.
So where to begin? Here are the essentials you'll need to add to your baby hospital bag:

3-5 PJs. I swear by Petit Lem because they have super comfortable fabrics and designs for your baby.
Going home outfit. It's the most fun part of expecting! Your baby will wear this special outfit when you leave the hospital.
20-30 diapers: I went with Honest because they are safe, effective and honestly adorable.
Baby wipes. I've used them for awhile a just really love them.

18-Week Pregnancy Update

I've been away for so long I can't believe I'm actually posting.

I took some time away to focus on myself, my family and the little nugget in my belly.

The first trimester was a tough one for me. More like a clusterfuck of emotions that felt like there was no end. So I needed that time to try to relax and focus on everything without having the additional worry to post here or any social platforms.

Instead of an actual 18-week update that usually includes how I'm feeling, how much I've gained and all that fun stuff, I thought I'd recap you on how my first 3 months were.

First, let me start by saying SURPRISE, we're having a baby! I don't think I even did the surprise news post. All I can say is that this pregnancy has been completely different than my 1st. With Matthew, I was so calm and relaxed and absolutely loving my growing bump and the pregnancy glow.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving this one as well, and I intend to until the end since this wll be my last baby. But, some bumps along the way made the 1st trimester less memorable. Ok ok, let me tell you how it went down.

Extreme nausea and fatigue, no appetite, and a few moments of vomiting. Not so bad, right? Totally something I knew to suck it up and do the best you can.

Usually, the blood work your doctor has you take to make sure your healthy and all that shit should be a breeze. Something I don't enjoy doing because I'm terrified of needles, but hey, I wanted another baby,so this was also part of the deal. So after having done my initial blood work, my doctor's secretary calls me 2 days later with an urgency that I come in right away to see the doctor. A million things run through my head. You know it's not for good news that they call you in so I immediately, so I call my husband in a panic.

Maybe I'm anemic. Maybe I'm in the process of having a miscarriage, Maybe, maybe, maybe. So many maybes discussed while driving to see my doctor. Oh, did I mention I had never met my doctor before? I changed doctors because I didn't like the experience with my last one after my labor with Matthew.

So yeah, first time meeting and I'm in a panic. The doctors' office empty's out by the time I see her in her office. She asks me a few questions about my previous delivery, tells me I'm very healthy and that excellent. But here's the crazy part, and I quote "Have you ever had a blood transfusion before or needed blood after your first baby?" Ahhh, no. "See here's the thing, you tested positive for HIV" Uh, what?! At this point, I just remember looking at my husband in shock and no longer registering what the doctor is telling me.

She doesn't understand it because my blood work is amazing. She doesn't understand it because the level they test for HIV does not match what someone with HIV has. But because the lab flagged it, they were sending my results to the infectious disease center. Seriously, what the fuck is going on and what do I do? I remember looking at her and asking if I should panic, as I begin to panic and cry.

To top it off, she's handing me a paper because if I am HIV positive, she can't see me as a patient and refers me to a special clinic who handles these situations. I can tell she's upset as well. She calls the head doctor at her hospital to ask what the hell was going on and the doctor replied, "Oh don't worry about it, it should be fine." Fine?! You flagged me to the infectious disease center and telling me I have to wait 2 more weeks before I know definitively if I'm HIV positive. Fine that I have to possibly deal with infecting my husband, my son and possibly my unborn child. I wasn't fine. In fact, I cried every day until the results came back. Probably one of the scariest moments of my life.

Finally, after calls to my doctor asking if they had heard anything, they came back with it's a negative. This huge stress off my shoulders and I finally felt like I can enjoy my pregnancy. For now...

2 weeks later, I have to do the Combitest. Now if you're not from Canada and don't reference it this way, this test screens for risks of common birth defects: Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 13, Spina Bifida and Anencephaly. We went to a private clinic for this since results are available within 48 hours. Perfect! I have my 12-week appointment that week and my doctor would have the results.

We brought Matthew with us because he has been so happy to become a big brother and has been absolutely amazing with me. He talks to the baby every day, it melts my heart. His reaction to seeing and hearing the heartbeat, the head and spine and tiny hands and toes was amazing. I also loved how he was concerned if the ultrasound would hurt me. Sweetheart, I know. The technician confirms all looks good on her end. Great heartbeat, nothing to flag! Great, that is always reassuring to hear. On to the blood test, yes? Matthew held my hand as I looked away and focused on breathing and not passing out. Blood test done, now we wait.

When the 48 hours came and no calls were received, I, of course, called them. I need my results, I'm on my way to see my doctor. No biggie, right? My results came in moderate. Moderate, what? Yeah, sure enough, I need to go for the 2nd screening in my 2nd trimester. I just remember crying the drive to the doctor's office and calling my mom. I can't stop crying and I wondering can I go without some news of retesting my blood? I appreciate the due diligence they do but fuck do I hate the waiting and unknown. All that to say that my tests were done 3 weeks later and I had to wait another 5 days for the results. Thankfully the results came out low risk and I celebrated with a Virgin Cesar.

Now that I am in my 2nd trimester, I finally feel like myself again and remaining calm and relaxed. I'm starting to feel some movements and so looking forward to my 20-week ultrasound. It's gonna confirm if it's a boy or girl since the first ultrasound could all predict 75% what the sex was. I await to shop all things baby and pick out the perfect name.

We have an appointment next month at a fertility clinic. Get a rundown of the process and then I assume would be some tests. I've always said I don't want to do any fertility treatments such as hormones injections, so I'm curious to see what will come from this and look at alternate options. At the moment though, I've purchased a huge box of ovulation test strips. Not sure I'm doing it right but so far 2 days of negative ovulation results. So now I'm looking at this like "holy shit, I don't ovulate when I think I do". So the experiment continues. Love to hear feedback on this. Have you used them before, do you find they help?

Ok, so here's the thing. Blogging has been an outlet for me to express my style in fashion, beauty, food and well pretty much anything I've ever wanted to share.

While my Instagram page is quite active with pictures, my blog has fallen behind. Mostly because it takes a lot of time, and the other because I've had so much on my mind.

I thought if I write it down, maybe I'm throwing it out there to the universe to help sort it out for me. Another part of me just needs to express my feelings even if no one is reading it. Call it free therapy I guess. :)

When I first found out I was pregnant with Matthew, happiness wasn't my first feeling. Don't get me wrong, I love being a mom and I love being his mom. But 5 years ago, motherhood was not in my plans. I was planning a wedding, we had just bought a home. So I had other plans at that time. I postponed my wedding and it worked out amazingly because Matthew got to walk me down the aisle 13 months later. My home has taken a back burner because I feel like I don't know what to do with it and I don't want to complete a room and not be happy with it a few months later.

But what's really been bothering me as of late is trying to figure out why I am unable to get pregnant again. It feels like 2 years have gone by where we are not careful and wanting to grow our family. Every month, anxiety. Every month, sadness. Every month, defeat.

What makes it worse, is the questions that come along with having a child. "So, do you want more kids?" I swear if I hear that question one more time, I might just lose my shit. What makes it even harder and it hurts so much, Matthew is asking for a baby. He so wants to be a big brother and I so desperately want to make him one. (Try explaining that to a 4-year-old).

So my journey to understanding, my journey to accepting starts now. I'm not giving up, my cut off has always been 40 so I have 2 years to figure shit out. While I'm still pretty silent cause no words can explain the shit going on in my mind and heart, I'm going to continue to be positive, patient and persistent because the universe has plans for me.

It's so funny sometimes how you come across the perfect location to shoot. My photographer and I are always walking around checking for the spot that mainly speaks to me. If I'm not feeling the spot, I won't shoot there. We found this train track in an upcoming urban area of Montréal. We ran and shot it really quickly out of fear that a train would come. It was so windy my hair was doing its own thing. I gave up trying to place my hair perfectly and just decided to go with it.

Now, if I have to talk about this outfit, mainly the skirt, I have to say it's on heavy rotation. Regardless of the occasion - F1 party, events, work, you name it - I've probably worn it. It's totally feminine, a go-to for spring/summer styling. In a mini cut, it comes with tie and ruffle detail. I'm absolutely obsessed!

Days in Montréal have been incredible. Now that the weather has been great, I can sport all the dresses hanging in my closet that I have been patiently waiting to wear. That's probably all that you'll see me in this summer. With the summer weather so unpredictable these days, I have a few to pick from for all types of weather. I picked up this dress at Zara a few weeks ago. I usually steer away from florals unless it's on a black dress but the floral embroidery and the layered frills had me intrigued. Naturally, I tried it on. Matthew (my son) told me I looked pretty, so I instantly had to buy it. He’s learning how to pay the right compliments to the ladies!

To Matthew, On Your 4th Birthday

The last time I wrote an open letter to Matthew was 3 years ago on his 1st birthday. (You can find it here if you've never read it)

Have I mentioned how lucky I am to have you in my life? If it weren't for you, being a mom would still have been a question. Because of you, I'm a better person. I've found the best version of me and I've never looked back. I am proud of you every day. The little person you are and the big person you will become.

I always think about what your future holds. What you will do, who you will become. The world is crazy and as your mom and #1 protector, I find myself scared of what can happen and how I can be your super hero. I've learned that while I can't control what the world has in-store for you, I can embrace what we have now and enjoy every precious moment with you.

On your 4th birthday (how is that even possible?), I wanted to focus on all the many things that make you so special and the many reasons why I love you so much. So after much thought, I realized there are just way too many to post here, but I can share 10 of my current favorite moments. Are you ready, because my eyes are about to explode with tears (which is really no surprise for those who know me so well).

I love our morning snuggles. Each morning, you wake up and crawl in bed with me. Your head nestled on my shoulder that I immediately have to wrap my arms around you.

I love how much you tell me you love me and how I can never be the one who loves you most. But oh, how I love you most. You're 4, so you can't read this yet, so there, I win! :)

I love how you love picking dandelions for me. Each one carefully picked. I'll forever be your first love.

I love your silly side. You're always smiling and laughing and you can instantly light up a room. Not to mention, you're amazing at Knock Knock jokes.

I love your imagination. Your creativeness always impresses me and I know I'm safe while you're fighting crime with Batman and the other super heros. Our home has never been more safe.

I love how you love music. It always impresses me how you quickly pick up on the words and and sing along without hestitation. You're currenly stuck on "Hooked on a feeling" and I love how you sing it from the top of your lungs.

I love how you dance. You've clearly got your moves from me (and I'm no dancer), but I love that you have fun with it. I love that you still want to dance in my arms.

I love how much you ask questions. Ok well maybe not when it's bed time, but your curiosity about everything amazes me. Keeping asking your questions my sweet boy. Knowledge is power.

I love how sweet you are. Your hugs can soothe any ones sorrows. Keep that calming presence and let it guide you when you're sad.

I love being your mom. From taking you to karate, giving you a bath, reading you stories, being silly with you. Every part of me loves it and I would not trade it for anything in the world.

You're the best part of me, Matthew.

Slowly inching my way to warmer weather. As I prepare for summer, I like to do some light layering for spring. I think the A-line dress is the style I own the most of. It's one of fashion's most enduring and flattering styles and looks good on any body type. I'm always more conscious about my tummy area and I always love the way an A-line dress hides that while flattering me in the right areas.

I'm sorry I've been absent over on the blog. Life gets in the way and you get busy doing things that are a priority over anything else. I'm doing my best to be more disciplined to be on top of it but fuck is it hard! Full time job, full time mom/wife and blogging can make for a full schedule, so thanks for sticking around.

I've been wearing lots of black lately. It's simple and I don't need to figure out if it matches cause it's black and goes with everything. I have however been adding pops of color like these booties. It's bright and the texture is not your typical shoe material. I'm shopping more basic items that I know I'll wear for more than 1 season and not just buying items that are the "it" item of the moment only to collect dust in my closet. I'm shopping smarter and I feel good about that.

While I'm not one to drink a lot, I managed to find one I can actually enjoy. What I love about this drink is if you don't want to add alcohol, you can actually feel festive without it.
