Gary Rossington, Last Surviving Original Member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dies at 71

Guitarist and songwriter Gary Rossington, the last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, died Sunday at the age of 71.

No immediate cause of death was given. Rossington had dealt with serious health issues in recent years, including emergency heart surgery in 2021, almost two decades after undergoing quintuple bypass surgery in 2003.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote on its official Facebook page. “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.

The guitarist was known for contributing distinctive slide guitar parts to class songs like the band’s anthemic “Free Bird” — as part of what ultimately ended up being a triple-guitar lineup — as well for co-writing Skynyrd classics such as “Sweet Home Alabama.”

In December, Lynyrd Skynyrd had announced an upcoming 22-city co-headlining tour with ZZ Top that was scheduled to begin in July. However, Rossington had not been performing at the group’s recent concerts. A week ago, in response to online fan queries about when or whether the guitarist would be returning to the touring lineup, the official Skynyrd Facebook account replied: “Gary will come to shows for guest appearances as he is feeling well and able. He is planning to be in Plant City next month.” At some 2022 shows, Rossington played for only the second half of the concerts, due to his health issues.

Rossington did not make any apologies for keeping the group going, years after he became the last original member to be part of the lineup. “Me, Allen [Collins] and Ronnie started this band with a dream of making it big, and that dream came true. They’d love it if their music was still being played when they’re gone,” he told Rolling Stone late last year.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the group’s debut album, “Pronounced Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd.”

Rossington had a number of “cheating death” experiences over the decades — most famously surviving the 1977 plane crash that killed the Florida rock band’s lead vocalist, Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and several members of their road and flight crews. Before that, Rossington survived a horrific 1976 Ford Torino car accident that inspired their roaring cautionary tale, “That Smell.”

“I don’t think of it as tragedy, I think of it as life,” Rossington told Rolling Stone upon the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. “I think the good outweighs the bad.”

Though the Allman Brothers Band and groups led by Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker preceded Lynyrd Skynyrd, the group was an avatar of the Southern rock brand, scoring platinum and gold albums lodged atop Billboard’s Top 200 and Top 10 pop singles starting with 1974’s “Sweet Home Alabama.” Co-written by Rossington and lyricist-singer Ronnie Van Zant, that song humorously responded to Neil Young’s cutting putdowns of the South in “Alabama” and “Southern Man” with “I hope Neil Young will remember / A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow.”

After the plane crash, but before Skynyrd regrouped, Rossington formed the Rossington-Collins Band with his future wife, Dale Krantz, and fellow Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins, which lasted only two years but resulted in two albums, 1980’s “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere” and 1981’s “This Is the Way.” Splitting with Collins, the guitarist then formed the Rossington Band with Dale Krantz-Rossington, releasing two albums in 1986 and 1988.

A decade after the plane crash seemed to have forced the group into emeritus status, Lynyrd Skynyrd roared back to life in 1987, for what was initially planned to be just one reunion tour. Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, took over as lead vocalist, joined by five members who survived the crash — Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle, plus guitarist Ed King, who had left the band two years before the crash, and new member Randall Hall. Collins, who had become disabled in a 1986 car accident, served as musical director but did not play with the reassembled group. The Johnny Van Zant-led edition of the band never did stop touring, and they resumed recording, as well, in 1991.

Stylistically, Rossington liked to say, “Guitar playing is really about what you don’t play; that’s what matters.”

Gary Robert Rossington was born December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, and was raised by his mother after the death of his father. More interested in baseball than rock ‘and’n’ roll in his youth (he aspired to play for the New York Yankees), Rossington turned to music in his teens after falling in love with the Rolling Stones. In 1964, Rossington met Ronnie Van Zant and drummer Bob Burns while they were playing on rival Jacksonville baseball teams.

Van Zant immediately became something of a father figure to the guitarist, according to filmmaker Stephen Kijak’s 2018 documentary “If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd.”

The threesome jammed together and formed a cover band, My Backyard, that featured Rossington, Van Zant, Burns, guitarist Allen Collins and bassist Larry Junstrom. As told to the New York Times by the vocalist’s mother, Lacy Van Zant, she once had to talk to Rossington’s teachers at West Jacksonville’s Robert E. Lee High School to allow the guitarist to keep his long hair; as playing in bands helped earn money for his mother, she explained, that long hair was part of the hard job of rocking.

My Backyard spent five years touring bars and small venues throughout the South, with Rossington’s instrument of choice being a 1959 Gibson Les Paul named “Berniece” (in honor of his mother). In 1969, the band became Lynyrd Skynyrd, and in 1973, the group released its debut album, “(Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd)” on MCA Records. Produced by Bob Dylan keyboardist Al Kooper, the album delivered country-inspired, Southern R&B rockers such as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” “Tuesday’s Gone” and the epic closing track, the nearly 10-minute “Free Bird.” With its blustery slide guitar courtesy of Rossington, alongside the fiery soloing of Allen Collins, the legend of Lynyrd Skynyrd had begun.

The triple-guitar approach of Skynyrd was not completely novel, though Rossington proudly noted the extent to whcih they popularized it. “I think a lot of bands are just copying us,” he told Music Radar in 2012. “When we got started, we were influenced by the Allman Brothers, but at the beginning they had two guitar players. They used to jam a lot, and different guitar players would get up and play with them, so they’d wind up having three guitarists. Buffalo Springfield had three guitar players, and we thought they were so cool. So we started doing the three-guitar thing, and people started calling us the ‘guitar army’ and all this stuff. … We didn’t start it — it just seemed like the way to do things down there.”

Although he rarely got technical or liked to brag about technique, he eventually gave Guitar World magazine a full explanation of just how he arrived at a sound on that signature song’s slide guitar that was a little trickier than most fans might have imagined.

“Around 1970, when we wrote the song, I had just started playing slide,” Rossington said. “Allen had these chords, but Ronnie couldn’t figure out any melody or lyrics to go with them. We kept playing the chords over and over, until Ronnie figured out some lyrics, and I came up with the slide part. But when I played, the bottle kept clinking against the frets because the strings were too low. I took a screwdriver, of all things, and stuck it under the strings up at the nut, so it would raise the strings up like a steel guitar. Then, I tuned the B string down to G — so the G and the B strings were both tuned to G. With the two Gs, it creates a drawling, doubled sound.”

When it came time to play “Free Bird” live years later, he replaced the screwdriver with a five-inch piece of wire, and then found a workaround for that — but didn’t abandon the wire, which he said “I just do out of sentimental reasons. I’ve never played that song live without it – it just reminds me of the way I did it originally. It’s like Jimi Hendrix on ‘All Along the Watchtower.’ He played the slide solo with a Zippo lighter. He couldn’t get it to sound right with a steel slide or a bottle, so he used a Zippo. Each guy has his own little tricks.” Rossington also borrowed his idol Duane Allman’s habit of using a glass Coricidin bottle for the slide effect. “He told me that a bottle sounds different than a steel slide, and I think it does, so I copied him.”

Of the plane crash, Rossington said in a 2020 interview with Guitar.com, “I remember most of it — the rapid descent, the screaming, my friends in pain like something out of Vietnam. “Waking up with the plane door on top of me. Cassie and Steve died. They were right next to me and Allen, yet we didn’t die, so we had unanswered questions as to why them and not us? We all believe in God because we’ve been through so much and yet we carried on… The crash has been brought up every day to us, since then. The main thing is we lost our best friends – that’s the hardest part. Our motto when we started was ‘If we don’t make it we’ll die trying.’ And we made it but at a terrible cost.

“We had a second chance to do this and we continued,” he added What else is life about than to live it? You’re a fool to not to live your dream. It’s unbelievable people still love our music and come out for us every night. We’re thankful.”

Of the other original members, Collins died in 1990, Wilkeson died in 2001, Powell passed away in 2009, Burns died in 2015 and King passed in 2018.

In the 21st century, the group took on more of an image as politically right-leaning, between playing for a Republican convention event, putting out a 2009 album titled “God and Guns” and, as they had since the beginning, displaying the Confederate flag on stage. Although they didn’t exactly renounce conservatism after all those things became controversial, Rossington did say a few years after the “God and Guns” record that they would be refraining from anything so polarizing or political in the future, and they put aside the flag, with Rossington saying they had no desire to be hurtful in their use of what they considered a regional single.

In 2018, the group began its Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour. With the group having booked two tours since then, the “farewell” tag would seem to have been hasty.

But Rossington knew he didn’t really intend to call it quits with that tour, despite the branding. In a 2018 interview with the Tampa Bay Times, the guitarist said he’d “had heart attacks on stage a lot” and expressed some practical, candid thoughts about why they were billing their then-current tour as a farewell trek. “That’s why I was calling it a farewell tour — I don’t know if I’ll be here,” he said. “I don’t want to just say, ‘Well, we’re never going to end,’ because I don’t want to die and then it end that way. Which is a heavy thing to talk about, but I have to.”

Promoting the would-be goodbye tour, Rossington told Uproxx in 2018, “It’s been a dream. It’s great. I still can’t believe we did what we set out to do. I’m so proud of it. That’s why I keep talking about Ronnie, Allen, Steve [Gaines], Leon [Wilkenson], Billy [Powell] and all the boys, to keep our memory and music alive. As far as writing, the songs stand for themselves. That’s why people come. The songs and the music. I’m prouder than a peacock and am honored to still sell out crowds. You know, I’m in bad health. I got a bad heart, and that’s why we’re quitting touring so much.”

Asked how he was holding up at the time, Rossington said, “I’m doing great right now. I just had some heart surgeries some years back and I’ve had a few stints put in since then. It’s just that. My doctors keep telling me to quit, but I just can’t. Musicians never quit, they fade away.”

Rossington further acknowledged the severity of his heart problems but said, “I don’t know how to do anything else but play… Since Ronnie and Steve didn’t live to see the new songs get massive, they’d never know how big this got and that 40 years later we’d still persevere. We call the stage a miracle zone where all your problems go away up there. Physical pain, your heartache all goes. The professionalism comes out and we blaze away. That’s when music speaks a powerful language.”

Rossington is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dale Krantz-Rossington, and two daughters.

Almost a year gone by and by with another coming up! 2017-2018 Found as Draft Never Published

I simply cannot believe it has been a year since I was here and posted! WOW!; times flies more and more! I would have never ever imagined it would take so long to settle in and I still have a lot more to do. I am in the process of still trying to get my flowers I brought from old cabin re-planted in a garden I had tilled here. It is taking forever it seems with still trying to settle into new cabin that we now own, some things like bookcases are still in middle of room where movers left them. Problem is no wall space as it is a big beautiful open concept with not many walls to put my bookcases against. I started putting unpacked books in them just to make boxes unpacked and re-use for other things, also to see what I had here as I still have some warehouses to check in what is also there too.

I have not listed either in my on-line shops, listing takes so much time with writing a description, taking photos, and measurements of everything I list ( I try to do) even more than some catalogs tell you about an item. I like to leave no surprises for anyone to receive as I offer no returns unless my fault in listing. The idea is to have spendable money is why I limit my returns, also to have postage mailing money which I made need to ship items I sell.

I have so much stuff of all kinds as I have said before that when I can get to doing it again, it will be a big assortment of kinds of items, Vintage and New, Outgrown down sizes) with clothing. I have many clothing items and Brands very desirable to hopefully my buyers. I have lost so much weight since moving to North Carolina because I spend so much time outside where I love to be and very active. But, my loved clothing simple much go as much as I just love it, I have not closet space to hold them nicely and I hate to iron but I will have too sooner or later. I got some covered clothes racks to put in my " Garden Shed" I purchased when we moved here along with garden and holiday items. I can now reflect on what I really do wear and double I will grow back into many of them and I have been pinning my waistbands which I will quit. I have enough that fits me now. Someone else may love it as I do( did) so now to make them available.

I am on my new HP computer which I got yesterday since my just died with freezing up my arrow curser and too many re-boots just making it completely unusable now. My DH is trying to remove from it what he can. I just do hope I did not lose all of my photographs and listing descriptions like I did once before when had to change computers. That was precious work lost!

Soon it will be Christmas and I finally have room for our old big tree we did not have room for in our old cabin. At least I hope too. It is not even pre-lit like all the new ones, and may need replacement too. We did put up string of LED small lights on the front and back decks to make it easier to see while there without a big overhead light on. Now, you can see our house from the main road which before was not seen until you almost entered our driveway. I did not expect to be able to see it so far away and I just noticed coming home one evening after dark. I don't think I like it being that visible either. Those are bright tiny white lights and more economical.

What in the world have I been up too lately! The forest is so enchanting now with the leaves falling rapidly. I got a bag of fallen pears yesterday from a couple to put out for the deer, they love them! They have been closer to the cabin lately, I can see them across in the forest by the edge of the road and sometimes even walking up it. I can hear them when the leaves rustle in the woods and look to see a doe and two babies, but we have more sometimes. Also the turkeys and I hope the bear will stay in hibernation so I can put my bird feeders back out as it tears them up.

I found while out one day what I suppose you really call "Pole Beans". I loved this garden!

I also have been collecting forest finds and filling Etsy orders from them. I love the "Natural Organic real thing" over purchasing a man-made item in a store look- alike. They never get it quite right.

Teeny Tiny Acorns are falling everywhere, they collect also in the Moss in my Bee Balm Garden. I can just rake my fingers thru the crevices and out they come! I also planted moss there to keep the falling flowers from getting in the dirt or mulch. The one small cone I got from another place as we have none on our property. This is a coffee can lid they are displayed inside of.

I found the Golden Wooly Worms, I wonder why they are not black or if they will be?

The sassafras leaves are the cabin are turning colors and are so beautiful! I call our cabin " Sassafrass Cabin" because we have so many of these trees in our yard and nearby forest.

I have real Pussy Willow over the Silk Artificial ones I brought up here. It dried beautifully and is in use in my potpourri and floral displays. I also dry so many of my flower heads and collect seeds for later in another place. I have gardened here more than ever in my life!

I also recently fell off the side of our porch and I sat there saying, " I did NOT break my ankle" over and over again before I got up. Praise the Lord is was not broken but badly sprained so I had to get some wider shoes to accommodate the wrap the DR. put around and I found some really cute ones. I love them, they are a size to big but OK, they will lace tighter after my ankle heals.I did have to return the brown leather slip-on because my heel slipped to bad in it. I thought the ties around them would be fine but, not enough to keep them on.

Re-Thinking Thread Up to resell my clothing and finding a Fabulous new Spray Paint for my Dried Flowers!

Since my last post I got my bag ready with very nice clothing and was ready to mail it when I saw a link on Facebook to their page and I saw nothing but BAD Reviews so I am NOT going to send it to them and I am also doing away with my affiliate status with them. Here is my bag I packed:

This one is from my personal experience and I can share with certainty a Great Product. I found these spray bottle of Purple "TintIt" Spray Paint at Halloween and when I used it on some foliage I sprayed gray instead of my Clear Preservative. I was so impressed with it! It is a Spray you can use lightly or cover heavily.

My gray paint was for my book primer I was using was for a Halloween book.
I loved the effect on the pieces of Hydrangea I sprayed gray and some rose hips. I did not re-spray the rose hips, they are just gone but I wanted to go back for more "TintIT" in a pink and blue as I have some I dried Hydrangea that is not full colors with some brown tinges on it. I also have way to much brown lace Hydrangea I will try to use it on.

The Brown Lace is beautiful in it's own way but I do have a lot of it. I searched our local area and could not find it again, so I went on-line and did a search for it. I found the least expensive price was from "Create for Less", a crafting site I really love when I looked around but all I could get at the time was the TintIt" Spray. The pink is called " Pinkilicious" and the Blue is called "Sapphire" and it is made by Design Master Spray Paint.Also the Purple is called " Plum" and that is what I used first before I ordered the other two on-line. "Create for Less had it for under $7.00 a bottle when the Walmart site had it on-line for almost $11.00 a bottle.

Here are my photographs: The first photos are of Dried Stonecrop, a succulent that has taken over my garden, the dried heads are brownish red but I thought they carried seeds and in searching it, I found they are not seed heads, so let's paint them. I found in the Halloween section at Walmart,the Purple Bottle called "Plum" and wanted to tint a hydrangea flower head dried brown. I loved it and went searching for more colors but they had no more of ANY of it in stock at both stores near me.

I still searched other shops and none to be found so I headed for the internet and found just what I wanted at CreateforLess shop! Wow, I had found a new to me Crafting Shop! They carry so much of everything I might need for mixed media needs. Sine I am living in a small country town we have no Joanne's or Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc to shop and is where I used to go for my supplies. They shipped me the Blue Color " Sapphire" and the Pink is " Pinkolicious. They are a multi-use transparent dye. You can make it how ever deep you want the color with a light spray to just barely give a touch of color and heavier sprays make it darker!

You can choose for your project any dye color you wish. There are more colors available too. I became an affiliate for them because I was so impressed with their inventory and shipping was reasonable and fast! It sure does work good, my" Pinkolicious " spray cap was not on right and it went everywhere but I did have on gloves to spray it with so all OK. I will shop there again when I am ready.

I have been busy listing some over-stock of merchandise I have no room for, especially since I closed my local Consignment Shop and have a lot of clothing: sweaters, jeans, accessories, etc. to list on-line at my Sister Etsy Shop and EBay also. I am sure better that I could do myself, plus so easy! They send you a Large Bag, you fill it up with your NICE clothing and you send it back to them postage paid by ThredUp! I have so many clothing items to sell and I just cannot find the time to list them all myself, so I am taking them up on this offer and I will see how much I make, better than sitting in my storage room.

Our Hummingbird Feeder

Terror in my heart this AM

I walked outside to drink my coffee this morning and I had just sat down when our hummers started buzzing their feeder hanging from our cabin eve overhanging from the roof when one of the hummingbirds fell and was hanging by its' beak caught in a spider string web. It was helpless and my heart went to my stomach. I am still shaking but I took my wood incense burner stick and twirled it in the spider web and then freed the tiny bird just hanging upside down from it. Those webs are so strong, I broke it and freed the bird and it flew away. Oh, Thank Goodness I was there! What was seconds seemed like a lifetime!

SO, watch your hummingbird feeders, I could not see this web hanging down until the hummer was attached to it, so I took my incense stick and went all around the feeder to rid any more webs that might be close. And, I will check out any webs on our porch later when it gets more daylight. Fate had me go outside when I did, my good deed saved the day, clap on chest!

What have I been doing?

Still gardening, this has proved to be a much bigger project than planned time for. I am finding so many new invasive plants that I have no idea what they are and pulling them. One great way to ID them is to ask at "Hometalk"! ( links on sidebar) I always get great replies there and lots of new ideas! I know I do not want to keep them and maybe I will put down some sheeting this fall when the good things are the only ones left. I do NOT want them again next year.

All the trees we cut down earlier in the spring are coming back too. Behind my rose trellis is a wooded area I plant moss and I thought the trees were giving my roses too much shade so we got out our reciprocating saw and down many of them came only to have sprouts coming back and some have stickers which I really hate. Then we burned them in our fire pit. It was a big job, if it was not a Sassafras tree it came down. I love them and we have many in our yard and forest surrounding us.

I dug up roots the first year we were here to make tea and it was wonderful. They spread roots and as I was first making my garden, they came up when digging near them. Heck, I am still collecting leaves from them being the horrid squirrel I am, saving everything.

But, I am really going to De-Stash now! I have too, I just have too much Stuff! Forest Nature Collections of about anything I find, things I brought from my consignment shops when we moved here and an attic and warehouse full of vintage items. I need to start ironing them. I am going to close my consignment shop here as this area is just too depressed with the economy, once the vacationers leave , no sales to speak of and I think I will do better with y on-line sites, Etsy, Ebay, Threadflip and a rare Bonanza listing. I have really let that shop lax as no time to promote it , I mainly sell on Etsy but items to NEW for there will be on Ebay as " frstyfrolk" my Vintage Etsy shop name where I first started. I started selling on Ebay to pay my medical bills when I found some of my Mother-In-Law's Vintage eyeglasses and jewelry. She wore those cat's eye glasses and they got me hooked that I could sell them. I still have lots of her jewelry and vanity trinkets. I also have lots of them myself. Mine are so sentimental to me I have just boxed them but no see, no think and I also do not wear jewelry here in the mountains like I did with city living. Plus I turn "65" this year and more money for Medicare will be deducted from my SS paycheck which was small enough to begin with. But, I will have health insurance, But, I doubt I will use it enough to be worthwhile. It starts this month making me take drastic measures to be able to just get by!

I hate always talking about hard times but we just never saw this coming!

Laurie was very nice in gifting me with this soap from her new line at : Abela Body Care on Etsy, her second Etsy shop! It is " Back to the Garden Soap" and I adore it, it smells FabUlOuS!

And, I used our clothesline to dry our porch and sofa blankets and pillows, they needed it with the dogs and dust from our gravel road! You can also see my garden work in progress below, I am finishing it ToDaY! Enough already!

So Blessed! Fantasy Gifts from the Keepers Of Enchantment Team " Scavenger Hunt" on Etsy!

I have been very fortunate in winning items lately! I fact, I won gifts from TWO shops by choosing the correct embedded image in the scavenger hunt shop items to enter the drawings from 17 shops who played this fun game!

In the Etsy Team" Keepers of Enchantment" ( tag KOE) which I earlier mentioned, we had a Scavenger Hunt and my first awesome package arrived this week. I was over the top with joy as I started opening it. It was protected beyond belief and I like to never got the outer wrapping if but with persistence and scissors, it came open to see my new goodies, A Fairy Garden package full of fun and very tiny miniature garden items"

I have no idea how Kimberly of Etsy Shop, Kimberly's Dream Craft can make such small pixie items but I am so grateful to have been able to select "This amazing set of Fairy House Accessories from Kimberly's Dream Craft Etsy Store "she gifted. When I first opened this amazing package I saw pink tissue paper with a tiny darling basket inside. I laid that out and just stared at the beauty of this cute basket, how enchanting it was, and what could it possibly old? Well, when I did open it I found such joy packaged for me. And, it sure looked like a lot more items than the listing showed that she had offered. I am so grateful to have these new items for my Lilliputian fairy garden to make and love!

There are many fabulous magical wands I love and a leather covered Tom -Tom Congo Drum with Two sticks for it to bang,-bang and trumpet for calling the pixies together for their festival. Also many beautiful stones the fairies and pixies have gathered for good luck and a cute flower pot with a fern and flowers for use in the pixie fairy garden. Beautiful decorations she has made and SOOO Small.... I mean tiny!

The Animal Rescue Site is one I go to daily to help fund food for animals! Many days they have one day sales for free gifts with just ship payment of $4.95. I love receiving these items now and then, they are always wonderful quality and serve a good purpose.

My recent orders were a paw print, tote bag which unfolds into a larger bag, car mirror hanger and pawprint dash pad, kitchen towels of owls and pawprints, and more; I love the paw print items. I have ordered many items over the years and they are still great quality and knowing I helping animals in some way is a GOOD feeling!

I also WON another items from a Shop Local Event I attended, WOw winning two items lately is so unusual for me. I hope I am on a streak, and here is a photo of the Picnic Basket I won from Mountain Like Realty Co.

I ate and drank my way through the event with awesome goodies offerent. I also brought home a free bag filled with literature and information that will be very helpful to me. I met a couple of ladies in f Essential Oil Booths that used them in products they offer.Also, mineral make up used that looked fabulous. I don;t wear much make-up anymore just around the house and forest. I had hair spray on after they took my photo for three local newspapers for the picnic basket and I was swarmed later that day while watering my garden from knatsy bugs! I was telling them to go away and leave me alone, my husband said to me, " Do you think they understand?"

I am late in starting my garden seeds and saved seeds from last years blooms.That is ONE thing I need to make a priority to do Today!

I have also been cutting rose blooms for my potpourri makings I am working on. I plan to offer them in my Etsy shop as I have bins of them in craft room.

I also discovered the zipper large plastic bags in a local shops for $1.00 for 4 so I almost bought them out. I did return for more and finally that had sold out of them.... They sure are nice to store things in and I can see what is in them easily. Even winter clothes to my warehouse and from my warehouse many materials for crafting. I do have way to many fabrics saved from vintage cut up clothing and great material buys here and there. I should also start sharing these in my Etsy shop as I can never use them all but I have a lot of great selections of all kinds of styles.

I found this beautiful pink/white/ and yellow moth with a broken wing on my porch so I put it in a jar with some flowers for nectar and moss for moisture but it did not make it. I tried!

Live Forest Moss Collecting Terrariums Fairy Gnome Hobbit Sprite Gardens

I love being in the forest and collecting moss that I sell in my ByLightOfMoon Etsy shop which has become a Nature and Supplies Shop more than when I first opened it 6 years ago. I just had my Sixth Anniversary with this shop! It has been a good and fun Six years!

I have learned so much since we moved to the forest! We retired and moved here 3 1/2 years ago and before that I lived in the city, I had always lived in a city.

At first I was selling crafting supplies separate from my Vintage Etsy shop "frstyfrolk Dragonfly Dreams" which was my shop for Vintage in Good Condition " and my vintage supplies that I craft with was in my supplies ByLightOfMoon shop!

I took moss for granted when we lived in the city but now I can walk right out my front door and be in the forest where we used to drive for hours to vacation in the woods and camp, hike,and raft, in fact, our community is a tourist destination and motorcycles come here to ride the two lane curvy roads and folks have second vacation homes here. We are two hours from any big city!

Here is the moss when I find in in the forest and I collected what the deer have kicked up and also some small amounts from a clump or loose moss I find just lying around. It can dry out but comes right back when watered, it is very resilient.

Here is how it looks after cleaned it as I went in the forest to get the pine needles and leaf collections off of it.

I don;t think my buyers realize how much is involved in collecting moss as I can't just go get it and put it in a bag. It does involve a lot of my time. Time is what I have and not $$$ so I enjoy it but it helps to buy gas and groceries between paydays. And, it does take a lot of time to process an order but I try very hard for 24-48 house shipping and always with tracking number sent to my buyers.

Sometimes I collect ferns also as was this order.

Here is was freezing weather last week and I had to bring it inside to work on it.

I have had a lot of fun forcing bulbs with the pussy willow I wrote about in and earlier post.
Not much room and I brought the white table holding the forced blooms downstairs from the attic craft room, this area looks to our back yard where I dream of sitting and reading a good book. On the table, I have pussy willow, hyacinth in Two Purple's (Light and dark) and had two pinks in bloom that have faded. I will plant them outside. The far pink in Kalanchoe in a beautiful Fushia color. The book table is holding the bulbs I was given and had pussy willow planted in them but they did not bloom like they do in just fresh water. And, the planter with the water globe is Swedish Ivy that was doing bad upstairs so I brought it down and it revived beautifully. It is cold in the attic but I still have my aloe and succulents, geraniums, and some other plants there, we will see if they survive the winter.

Another neat thing I have found in my area I live in is pink streaked sand. It just fascinated me when I found it as it was under the grey mica sand I collect for my potting soil and terrariums. It reminds me of sherbet ice cream!

It is just amazing isn't it? Just lovely! A great find!

I had fun sharing my collections with you. I am also building my wall with extra and a different kind of moss I find to cover the rock and try to look a little nicer!

We also have the bear return for a visit last week, she got into my finch feeder and took off with her one end of it. It was a green plastic globe at each end with the finch feeder inside, she also took the suet from two suet holders, usually she takes all of it but, we have repaired them from her earlier visits and I suppose they came apart easily and all she took was the suet, thanks goodness! I am so glad she did not bother or nice wood feeders. We got two lighthouses for Christmas and have a log cabin feeder up also. She already has destroyed one, I never found anything but the roof before.

Off to get to my day! I have another moss order., thank goodness!

Old Beam Flashlight turned into Potting Soil Shovel Diggers ~ Re-Cycle Up-cycle Re-Use

I was over-joyed yesterday when my husband gave me a second old broken flash beam light! I just took off the screws and had two pieces that I use for digging out of the very large bag the products I use to make potting soil.

I make my own soil since we have a lot of clay here by using sphagnum peat moss , sand, and Good Ol' Mother Earth, topsoil, sometimes potting soil. I add bone meal to this and this re-cycled Up-cycled Shovel Digger helps me to collect my sphagnum peat soil and from the large bag it comes in. Same thing with vermiculite if I use it and I collect sand for mixing as filler. It makes my potting soil much less compact for my gardening.

Just an idea I saw in this Old Flashlight Beam ready for the trash!

BTW, the background for these photos are SNOW!

We had 4-6 inches of snow last week on top of the 4 inches we already had on the ground, crunch , crunch and now mush, mush:

And after I took the snow off, it is as perky and green as ever! The British Soldier are thriving and looking good.

This one across from the other I put leaves on top of the Succulents here and have not completely got them out yet, I pull on the leaf until it comes loose by itself.

OK, I got more leaves off here.

I treated myself to these items on a Valentine Day sale

I adore the owl card and just could not resist, The jello mold might be useful in crafting, and the Love to the Moon and Back is just me! I love it!

I have also been cleaning out my warehouse to make more room and going through my crafting room in the attic to actually make room for crafting and moving out some STUFF or JUNK as my family calls it. I have boxes and bookcases full of Books and Magazines I have saved over the years and it is time to let them go to someone else, But, I love looking through them (like I have time) but, they make me smile and refresh my mind which I call " Mental Floss"

When I laid them out, I was enchanted by them, can I let them go?

I will be listing in my "frstyfrolk Etsy Vintage store and Ebay listings" ,the newer ones not yet vintage unless they can be supplies for crafting, great scrapbook pictures and my hand cut punches in many designs.

Now, the Gnome nook I just got and it was handy, I will not be selling it anytime soon. That is my thing, fairies, hobbits, gnomes, elves, sprites, and living in the forest I encounter little presents they leave for me to find with my forest finds and trinkets. I look for moss and forest finds right out my front door and you can see in the neighborhood from the winter pictures.

They give me wonderful ideas to embellish my crafting projects when I need to get busy doing instead of always trying to focus on moving things around that is hard to me to let go!

I have to let go in 2015!

Up-coming Valentine's Day Holiday!

I made a Valentine Vignette with some things I found around my over-flowing stashes'! I love to create tiny tabletop displays now as I have no room like I used to when my daughter was small, Oh, I used to decorate the whole house especially using her Valentine Day cards from her grandparents as hanging mobiles and two of the items I found were just like them. These are now in my frstyfrolk Etsy shop!

I even used an old Vintage Rusty Crusty Bed Spring Coil for a vase;

I had added some silk flowers for the vignette that I don't use anymore as I like things fresh from the forest now more and more. I have a large stash of silks that I used to get from my shopping sprees in Alabama. I have them in my attic displays and craft stash and will one day use some of them but never all of them. I have so many here and there in hanging baskets, galvanized vases and tubs, jars, bins, and in my warehouse. I also took a large wood holder for my consignment shop to hold them.. It looks kind of empty, I need to add more! But, I am going to take out the wood holder which I had full in my attic and bring in a new shelf with slates to hold some linens. I will replace it with a galvanized vase.

I also got a square cubicle space for Books and Magazines, etc right next to my space!
I have lots of materials to fill it up with and during these winter months, a good time to sit down and read a good book or browse vintage and newer magazines!

Matter of fact, it is starting to snow here and sticking!

I have been working as "frstyfrolk" trying to get more items listed in my Vintage Etsy shop and having so many wonderful conversations with new made friends!

I am putting my fabrics, ribbons, and sewing notions in here and at my Consignment shop at Victoria's in Blairesville, GA. It is about 20 miles from my house.

I am also making new terrariums for Valentine's Day, using the new pink sand I found!

Of course, I am still in the garden sprucing it up, this time the left vertical wall! I have been fighting it for 3 years now so I decided to ad what naturally grows there around my neighborhood and surrounding areas, juts not on MY wall! I am adding lots of sheet moss and cushion moss, along with the Reindeer Moss to help hold it all in place.
I was playing around with my reindeer moss and tried dying it as I have seen.
It turned out pretty good but, very time consuming.

I adore my new purple sled I got to use when collecting moss, it makes it so much easier.

Isn't it beautiful, I also am adding this moss which grows across the street from me, it grows high and has little broom like tassels on it.

Here is the wall I am working on

I am trying to cover the rooted vines that are rambling around on my wall. The wall is shaded by the house and gets no direct sunshine.

One the other side, I am adding some rose branches to an existing rose area that never blooms, I just moved some leaves and presto, British Soldier Lichen, Moss and Strawberries are found.

I also love the skeleton leaves found under dried leaves! Then, I added some cut up bananas to the planting area... They are good for them.

Another thing, I have been obsessed with this magazine I got about container gardening and the Pussy Willows got my attention right away. So, I went and cut some branches to try to force and now I cannot find any bulbs in the stores yet. I want the purple Hyacinths.

I wish I know of a friend with a garden needing to divide but not happens! So, I will keep looking!

I also found my best find ever at the Recycle Trash Site a couple of weeks ago. Get this!

At first, I saw the baskets and I ask if I could have them, he said certainly and then when he left I found the tables they must have gone with just left on the side of the trash area. Why not re-cycled to a charity thrift ?, I don't know but I am much appreciative, (Grins)

I have added the " Nature" to my ByLightOfMoon" shop and I am removing the crafting supplies like ribbons and fabrics to my " frstyfrolk" shop.

I want to build on 'frstyfrolk" and when I think of Vintage, I have so many " Vintage supplies" I think they need to be here. When I first started I was only putting items in perfect Vintage condition in my shop and since we have moved to the forest, My ByLightOfMoon" shop has evolved into a Woodland, Rustic, Rusty Crusty, and Curiosities Retreat I believe.My Fairytale Mystic Spirit the Forest we live it has shown to me. I love living it!

My "frstyfrolk" is more a Traditional Shop for everything Vintage now! Even Crafting Supplies, that can be up-cycled, reused and re-cycled. Before my shop had to be perfect Vintage items and not so good or broken was not in this shop! I like Mixed Media Crafting and I have many supplies for this with many I can never use all of because I have collected so much in the past.

I have lost and lots of Notions to list, Books, Linens and Fabrics, Magazines, all of the things I collect!

Following Day continued:

It has been a strange and busy week, I found my logs have sprouted ' Shitake Mushrooms" I implanted 2 years ago.Pretty Exciting but I have never eaten one, Oh, what to Do?

Also , our dog "Bailey" got his foot caught in a trap ( coyote, wolf, whatever) He was gone a long time and we looked and looked for him. I drove around the neighborhood looking and calling for him. In the meantime, my husband heard a dog barking in the distance from our back porch and headed that direction to find the bark. Through brambles and a deer path he went! It did not sound like our dog! But, he was found only a few hundred yards off our back yard but in a forest area not in our neighborhood, so my husband called for help and my neighbor beat me there to find them. He is OK now, just sore and we went back to cut the trap and it had been removed!

Carolina Panthers are on to more final games, hoping for Super Bowl!
We don't get NC television so we rarely see them play! That "Cam Newton" is something else!

While I was out looking for our dog, I also saw these pods on a tree and I was going to collect some sand for my gardening.

Does anyone know what they are from?

While out also anyway, I was going to collect some sand for my gardening.. I can get it from a ditch nearby when it washes in the rain and we had plenty of that last week. Look what I found? It looks like Rainbow Sherbert!
At first I dug in an area around the corner and it was plain ol' grey sand, when back for more, just a few feet away, this!

Well, My cell phone did not take that good of a Picture but, it was just magical! The first layer was gray dirt to find the second layer just an inch or so deeper. There were pinks, blues, yellows, and grey covered it and along the edges.

I am started to re-do my pathway to the house like I need more to do with more level stones as it is a rock driveway and clumsy to walk on. I collected some beautiful blue stones from a quarry nearby, they are just awesome.

What got me started was thinking of the stepping stones I intend to make when I saw these at "Lowes Home Store"

This will be a later project as I have lots of broken china and pieces of interest ( to me) to embed in the stepping stones.
The Octangle Stone made in the photo above was one my husband made with our Past Dog's Names on it.

Well, another messy project I started for no reason when I have so much else to do!
