Shopping with your teenager can be a challenging experience for many parents. Denim shorts – a new twist on an old classic

Denim shorts have long been a classic staple of summer fashion, and this year is no exception. Originally introduced from France, and popularised in America, denim has gone from functional work wear to fashion staple, seen on catwalks and high streets alike. Through the years denim has evolved into many different styles, but it has stood the test of time, and continues to be reinvented season after season.

This summer, denim is taking on a new lease of life with a huge range of different colours and prints replacing the previous options of blue and black. With floral prints to neon oranges, denim can be many things this summer, but it won’t be dull. Match a bright pair of denim cut-offs with a looser fitting neutral blouse for a casual yet stylish look, or if you are feeling confident, try mixing and matching some of the bolder printed denim shorts with bright tops. Monochrome is still around over summer; so don’t panic if colour is not your thing!

Shorter lengths are still popular, but many styles are more high waisted than in previous years - which can have the benefit of making your waist appear smaller, and your legs longer. High waisted shorts also have the benefit of not revealing your underwear when you bend down! To accentuate a small waist, why not pair with a tucked in blouse, or loose fitting top? High waisted shorts and jeans are definitely not for everyone though, and for those who prefer lower rise shorts, there are still plenty of options available, including this great pair from Riders.

Other unique features that we are seeing on denim shorts this summer include studs and embellishments, along with front and back pockets. Pleats are also popular for an extra twist of femininity.

Usher in spring with a splash of colour

Spring is here, so it is time to shake off those dull winter greys and blacks and embrace a brighter existence! If you aren’t a lover of colour, and prefer a more neutral look, you might need to brace yourself, because this spring is all about colour, from neon, to bright shades, to softer pastels. From warm, earthy tones to orange and yellow, be bold and don’t be afraid to be noticed this spring.

For those of you brave enough to make a statement, why not try mixing different bright colours, or taking advantage of some of the colourful prints that are around at the moment? If you want to experiment, but aren’t quite ready to commit to head to toe neon, add just a splash of colour. Consider a pair of shoes or a handbag in your chosen shade, whether it’s neon or simply bright, and bring a neutral outfit up to date.

If you are tempted by colour, but neon isn’t your thing, you have plenty of other options, particularly among the earthy browns and greens and burnt orange popular this season. Pastels are also returning for spring and summer, allowing you to make the most of adding colour to your wardrobe in an understated way. Try skinny pastel jeans paired with a light-coloured, loose-fitting top, or a pretty pastel or print dress in a floaty feminine fabric. The trick with pastels is to keep the outfit clean and simple, and avoid too many frills or ruffles for a mature, sophisticated look.

The weather is warming up, and spring is finally on its way. No doubt your kids are getting excited at the prospect of shedding the winter layers, and running around free in lighter clothing. There are lots of new season clothes to get excited about too!

Your boy can enjoy looking cool in military-inspired cargo pants and skinny jeans, while your daughter will love cute spring prints, and tees that can be paired with skirts or jeans. Spring weather can be unpredictable, so make sure you don’t leave the house without an anorak or trench coat to ward off unexpected showers and light winds.

Leggings are an ever-popular favourite for girls of all ages, and they are given a twist this season with cute, colourful prints and bright colours. Great by themselves, or underneath skirts and dresses, a pair of soft leggings can keep your little girl warm until shorts weather rolls around.

Boys can enjoy making a statement with graphic t-shirts and printed hoodies. Layer up against unexpected chills, and for a casual, comfortable look. Long sleeved tees are great for spring, as they are cool and comfortable, but still warm enough to stop the shivers on cooler days.

Spring Trends 2012

Now that winter is over its time to brush the barnacles of your body and head out into the peaking sun and the blossoming flowers. Spring is upon us and its time to get into this seasons trends.
I consider some of the trends this season as very "new-mod" and by this I mean that there are some old trends coming in but have been modernized to fit today's streets style. New-mod is bringing in the 70's neon but with a preppy kick or the print on print in the 80's-90's. There are a couple of trends that are going to be very bold this spring and they are as follows:

The mints and baby pinks. The pastel colors have already flourished through New York and Paris fashion week as well as David Jones and Myers spring/Summer collections. I highly suggest having a mint green "something" in your wardrobe as I have a feeling its only going to get bigger in Summer.

To me there is no surprise here. Neon has been creeping into season swatches fairly subtly for the last couple of seasons, but now it has its turn to be loud and soon to be everywhere. I love the idea of brightening up an outfit with neon nails or shoes. It also gives you that option of wearing that LBD even on a sunny day as you can accessorize with neon giving the very black dress that perfect hint of color.

I feel like this trend never has really left us since last spring summer however it comes with alot more edge this year. It began with the "mullet" hem but now asymmetric hems are of all kinds asymmetric. Its almost like micro mini skirts are adding fabric here and there but not for coverage much like the ones shown above. Be daring with your asymmetric hems try all different ones and see which ones suit you.

I had to really look into this trend, because to me sequins really aren't that subtle (most of the time). But for this season they really can. Save those fully sequin dresses for the Christmas Party or New Years and just warm up with a sequin jacket or collar. Try casual outfits and use sequins for a super stylish edge whether it be on your nails, a skirt or a jumper with embellished shoulders. Take off your studs from winter and replace with sequins for this Spring.

As shown this Spring brings us some bold trends that can be affordable and easily adapted. These are just only a very limited amount of trends to pop up this Spring. For other ideas think

We have a great collection of brands here at Byron Bay Threads, which cater for all ages big or small. I am very excited to introduce a couple of new brands to our online store which I know you will love.
Starting off with a super hip men's brand called St. Goliath. They are very trendy and have a very colourful, beachy summer 2012 collection coming soon. St. Goliath is for a casual man who enjoys street wear and mixing and matching staple pieces.
Second, we have another brand called Silent Theory. This brand comes from the South of Melbourne and we will generally stock the men's basics however their is a little women's aswell! They have great colours and styles which will get anyone through the summer. It tends to be alternative and edgy and each collection is a limited edition.
Last of all is actually one of my personal favorite brands called All About Eve. This is a women's brand which stock all kinds of quirky and super trendy garments. The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival runs through October-November and is a huge event not just for horse racing but also for fashion scouting. It is a time where every attending woman dresses to impress as you compete with fashion role models that are dressed to the nines. It has almost become an extra Melbourne fashion festival with designer, modelling and styling competitions, which is all a better reason to dress immaculately .
As this beautiful event comes closer and closer its important to get in quick and find the perfect dress that could "wow" the nation. I thought id help with some easy tips and ideas so you have a good idea of what dress to look for.
I begin with my favourite rule which I use everyday and it is not to wear all black. The festival is always very beautiful and vibrant don't ruin it with a sad black dress, make sure you include something bright and colourful to embrace the wow factor.

Layering is just right as winter blends into spring

A change of season is always a tricky time when it comes to what to wear. But as winter slowly starts giving way to spring, layering is the perfect wardrobe solution.

Buy a few mix and match staples, like long sleeved tees, tunics, tights and fine knits, and you’re prepared for cool mornings and warm afternoons. While you can never be sure if rain is on the cards, a cleverly layered outfit tells the world that you know exactly what you’re doing fashion-wise, even if the weather can’t quite make up its mind.

Fox and Finch- Summer 2012

Minihaha is an up market brand which brings us a number of labels for children ageing from new born to 14 in girls and 10 in boys. One of their labels named Fox and Finch is a beautiful collection for children aged 2-8 years.
Their summer collection has just been released and is on its way to us here at Byron Bay Threads. Like all of Fox and Finch's collections there is a lot of attention to detail making the garments very high quality for young boys and girls to wear. Each collection is designed with a story line incorporating different colours and styles. This makes it more versatile and appealing to any buyer as you know that you'll always be able to find a favourite.
This seasons collection brings us a very "wild" story where you will find graphic tee's or dresses for both boys and girls. The graphics are very fun and colourful with animals you could find on an African safari.
For the younger side of the range the girls have pretty sun dresses with frill sleeves, and boys have rolled up shorts with a collared or graphic tee to match. The rest of the range tends to keep to the basics however with a trendy edge. It is ESSENTIAL to have a collection of basics for any of your fashion needs. It seems to be one of the oldest tricks in the book when setting up a wardrobe that you have a range of basics that you can manipulate and change to suit any occasion. Many basics are sold at almost every clothing store but range widely through quality, style and price.
Betty Basics is an affordable and high quality range of basics that will save you in so many ways.
They are items that can be worn by themselves, underneath, over the top or in between any outfit. The range includes a number of different leggings, tops, camisoles, skirts and dresses.
The leggings are made out of either cotton/elastane or nylon/elastane and range in lengths and designs. They can be used for so many different reasons its ridiculous. Due to the quality I would show the tights off, wearing them with a long top or a short dress for example. But they are also great for casual wear or for working out.

Rita Slip

Betty Basics also has the Rita Slip, which is the must-have dress for any woman. Slip dresses will save your life in so many ways. They are used usually as an under garment like a safety net if the dress is see through or revealing. However it has become more popular as an outer garment wearing it with a big junky jumper, over tights or just by itself on those hot summer days.
My favourite Betty Basic item is the Celine Scoop Tank. I am even wearing one now. I have tried many brands looking for the perfect basics for me. I tested out the basics ranging from Supre to kookai and country road and the Celine Scoop Tank is easily the best basic for me.The tank made out of cotton/elastane comes in a range of colors and has been a great item for this winter. Today I am wearing the white/black striped tank underneath the Shilla Hazy Crochet Top just for some extra warmth. Layer these tops whether its two different colored tanks or underneath a dress or top like I have today.

THE ROAD IS HOME

It's always an exciting day when there is a showing for the next season. I find it particularly thrilling as I get to draft my summer wardrobe before summer is even here! Today I looked over the Shilla range called The Road Is Home which is coming out for November to December. Its very glitz and glam with the bright fuchsias and neon's mixed in with gold and black sequins. Similarly to its last couple of summer collections Shilla keeps the very girly look with the mandatory triangular ruffle that usually sits from the straps to your navel. It also includes the tiny pom pom's that were around last spring summer usually sitting on the hems of skirts or tops.

When looking at the collection it makes me think Alice McCall, Zimmerman or Missoni with the patterned resort style maxi's and jumpsuits. However, the range really only includes one full maxi as many of the skirts and dresses tend to have an asymmetrical hem whether its of a square "mullet style" or diagonally across the legs.

I cannot wait to grab my hands on this collection I am really excited to bring back neon this summer in the least tacky way possible. But I have to admit Shilla has done so many rights in this collection that it's going to be hard to choose what items I'll take.

Try wide?

I haven't been able to hit the idea of the wide leg pant yet. My wardrobe consists of a double digit amount of jeans, pants and leather which stick very tightly from waist to ankle.
But why not go wide leg? I like wide leg pants, so why don't I try it out?

It's easy to be "safe" when buying new bottoms i.e. your collection of jeans which are almost exactly the same but in light denim, dark denim and black. It is also purely because that's what goes with everything else in your wardrobe and that's what you are comfortable in!
I'm going to try change this today, for both you and me.
Wide leg pants are photographed on many celebrities and on the catwalk. They are great for both summer and winter, AND they do not show any lumps or bumps. :)
The SHILLA coffee wide leg pants come in a mink color and black. They sit high-waisted therefore accentuate the thinnest part of your body. They have no such "clingy-ness" so they are comfortable and are great if your not keen on showing off your legs.

LADAKH mumma mia pant

I cannot put a limit to where you can wear wide leg pants whether its to the Sunday markets or out to a fancy dinner. They work with sandals, oxfords, wedges or ballet flats. When styling try a tight long sleeve top or body suit with any of the shoes I mentioned previously. You can also dress it up a little more with a lace blouse.

She seems to be the new "it" thing. Kate Middleton has praise from many stylists and fashion icons for her grace and kind presence as she continuously steps out into the world in her amazing designer garments.

When did you start Caxton Street Agencies? Was this your first experience of the fashion industry, or had you previously worked in the industry before starting out on your own? How many years have you worked in the Fashion Industry?

Narelle: I started my own agency in 1979. It was called Narelle Hamson Fashion Agency - yes, not very original. Ha ha!

After two very successful years, I decided to buy a cottage in Caxton Street in Brisbane with my brother Lindsay, and from then on we never looked back - 35 years later and we’re still loving the industry. This is how the name Caxton Street Agencies came about.

I moved to Europe in 1974 / 75 and travelled around as a single fun-loving, very out-there woman with a zest for life. I fell in love with fashion after seeing how differently the women in London, Italy and France dressed -with extreme style. I then decided I would go for a job at Miss Selfridges and the Top Shop - without any experience - only passion for fashion!

Of course I got the job in High St, Kensington… what an amazing journey. I was very well dressed for a girl travelling the world and 24 years of age. I then decided to send back to Australia, samples of all the best sellers instore, to a friend of mine, who owned Splendiferous - a chain of stores in Brisbane city. On my return to Australia I started working as Store Manager at Splendiferous, at their Edward St city store; a fantastic position. The two sisters who owned the business were Danish and well ahead of their time, and with me being of Swedish blood, we got on very well. They taught me heaps; then I was offered a position with one of Brisbane’s leading fashion agents, selling the best of the best labels, e.g. Anthea Crawford, Cherry Lane and Esprit. I stayed there for 4 years before eventually going out on my own.

So what exactly is the role an agent, or agencies play within the fashion industry?

Narelle: Well, where do I start – their role is everything from a sales person to a psychologist, communicating closely with customers. The agent or agencies inject energy into brands, have constant contact with all suppliers, organise staff training, and visit stores on weekly road trips. They ensure they have the best infrastructure and that they are on the front line of the latest information technology and social media marketing tools. At all times they advise customers of the latest fashion trends and share product knowledge. In a nutshell agents and agencies act as the Guru of fashion - a bit like The Devil wears Prada!!!

Can you share with our readers one of your most memorable experiences in the fashion industry? And one of your worst experiences ?

Narelle: The most memorable - writing an order for $180,000 with one customer for an opening summer collection with one of Australia’s best designers.

The worst - losing a label I had worked very hard on for over 10 years.

If you could go back in time, would you change anything about your career within the fashion industry?

Narelle: I would travel more and not spend as much time at work.

How do you feel about the internet, social media and blogging ? How do you think the fashion industry has changed with the rise of this online world, in which kids grow up now?

The internet has opened up more opportunities in the marketplace and enables the customer and supplier to connect their ideas and knowledge resulting in more exciting prospects. Buying online will never totally replace the consumers’ shopping experience, which is socially and emotionally satisfying.

Bricks and mortar, online or a combination? Where would you put your money?

Narelle: A combination of both is important now - as online is the way of the future.

Where do you see the fashion industry in 5-10 years?

Narelle: It will not change dramatically, however every retailer will have some form of online/website business. To be competitive, I think retailers need to take more pride with presentation, customer service and delivery of the shopping experience.

What brands/retailers do you see doing all the right things at the moment?

Narelle: Zara seems to be on everyone’s lips. Cameo is a must-have label in a girl’s wardrobe. Top Shop - as I am reading Phillip Green’s book called the Top Man - which has taken so many risks to be so successful.

And then online retailers – Net-a-Porter, Asos, Blue Fly – these are the big guns in online who are so far ahead of the rest.

Do you have any tips for the people out there who are interested in pursuing a career in the fashion industry? What kind of direction should they take?

Narelle: If you have a passion for fashion, you are ¾ of the way there. And the rest is knowing how to put clothes together, reading fashion magazines and constantly being on the internet, following all new trends and knowing what’s happening in the business. Never stopping, as fashion is on fast forward.

The sun is shining today here in Byron Bay and to add to such a wonderful day I have more shiny things to brighten up your day wherever you are.Here at Byron Bay Threads we have just got some amazing jewellery which are great to accessorize with any outfit this winter. All of the jewellery are semi precious gems and crystals made into bracelets, necklaces and bangles which are great for a boho chic style.

The bracelets range from a rose quartz to a blue howlite. This sort of gemstone jewellery have been seen on many celebrities and fashion icons whether at a red carpet event or at a festival. For a boho/gypsy style have a look at all the different bracelets to mix and match together from the wrist up the arm. This trend has been seen on celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Bilson and Nicole Richie just to name a few.

If boho is not your style, it doesn't mean these aren't for you. The rose quartz or purple adventurine would look great just simply by themselves for a night out. Match with metallic or lace for a chic girly look.

An outfit a day- Coffee with the girls

It is always something worth looking forward to; coffee, cake, gossip and friends.
I kept a casual look with the blue jeans but by adding the Ladakh silk-look top it creates a fun and stylish approach. If its a cooler day try the left look where I just added a little dress jacket for warmth or even just a cardigan will suffice. Match with some ankle or mid calf boots. An outfit a day- Looking FAB at the gym

I've been a bit lazy this winter season but after a bit of thinking i now know how to motivate myself. Every time I go to the gym there always seems to be those couple of ladies that dress in the best and most high range gym wear which makes me want to exercise on the other end in a small corner.

Today I have styled up a plan to get us "daggy" gym girls looking fabulous and running on the middle treadmill as if we were on bay watch.
I have used Betty Basics as a core brand which is as comfortable as Stella McCartney but with the price you can afford. Using the bright coral color is great for most complexions where it'll keep you glowing pink, rather than red and sweaty. Using this Sass vest has helped bring such a plain outfit to a much more stylish edge. It does not have to be worn whilst working out but it will keep your core warm before and after. It is polyester so no stress with washing either.

For a bit of mix and match I used a Sass top of an off white that can alternatively be used as a gym piece. Looks great with most bright colors as shown and is also super comfortable and can be worn for your whole work out!

As winter is upon us the rain pours down and the skies become greyer and greyer. Even though everything just seems to be cold and dark it is not an excuse to dress that way too!

This winter brings us fur, lace, mustards and floral just to name a few so mix and match to make a bright and colorful winter.

Incorporate a fur jacket with red jeans for a fun and vibrant outfit. Add on some black boots and plain long sleeve top to keep warm. If the winter day brings us sunshine keep the boots but change for a suede skirt with long socks and stockings.
