Painted Lady Butterflies

We had a BLAST with our butterfly habitat! Sammy was giving this for Christmas from his Uncle Dave and Aunt Lisa and it was spot on gift for him. The hard part was waiting until it was warm enough so we could order them and release them (instead of them living in captivity until they die.. that would have been too traumatic for Sammy my living creature lover)!

At the bottom of this picture you can see a piece of paper safety pinned into the habitat. When you order the caterpillars they come in a container with their own food and this filter paper at the top and a lid. You leave the caterpillars in there while they grown and while they spin their chrysalis. Once all of them have done this you move the paper into the habitat. Then you wait and wait and wait until the butterflies come out! Sammy loved this whole process.. watching the caterpillars grow.. watching them make the chrysalis and coming out of the chrysalis. I knew he would love interacting with the butterflies since we took him to an exhibit. Since we had been to the exhibit we knew just how to get the butterflies onto our fingers and we loved setting them free!

Nicia Turns 14!!

I am not sure how exactly that happened but I meet Nicia when she was 4 and this birthday made me feel very old! Her birthday fell on the weekend.. but with lots of April birthday’s we weren’t able to celebrate that day. We had a blast celebrating the next Saturday. I was in the other room when these pictures took place.. all I know is they were all making silly faces and I can’t help but share them:

Nicia opening some of her gifts.. we all wrapped them in Justin Bieber Christmas wrapping paper (I had to look up how to spell his last name ).. she doesn’t like him anymore which made it a very fun joke! We couldn’t resist buying the wrapping paper when we all went shopping after Christmas and got it 75% off.

The cake melted really fast with all of those candles on it… Rachel had the tough task of digging it out of the pan.. just when she thought she made it to the plate the piece fell off. Sammy thought it was hilarious and told her to try again and not to throw the cake on the counter

Sammy was really sad to leave (you can see he was crying in the picture).. he was so sad because he was having fun playing Mario Galaxy with Nicia (and it was 10 pm):

Ahoy Matey! Sammy's Pirate Party!

Sammy had a pirate party for his 5th birthday party and I had a ton of fun decorating and coming up with witty names for the food ;-)! My good bloggy friend Melissa (and here) was so super generous and sent me some pirate decorations. Her daughter Molly had a pirate party earlier in the month and she mailed me so many AMAZING decorations and gave me tons of ideas! Thanks Melissa you are amazing and I am blessed to have you in my life!

I always say I will do a better job getting pictures of the decorations.. then I fail.. usually miserably. This year I did better but not great :-P Here is a picture of the Happy Birthday banner I made for the party. I found a free pirate font online and printed out the letters. I then cut them out and burned the edges and mounted them on some cardstock:

We got our cake at Costco since we had such a large party. I made it piratey by adding some pieces from a Pirates Toob. The pirate candles came from Melissa :-)

We had a treasure map to find the pirate loot (party favors) at the end of the party. One of the clues was to find Peg Leg Pop Pop (my Dad) and he would point them towards the loot. I tried to get a picture of Sammy with my Dad in the ~~crazy~~ piratey hat I made him:

We had AMAZING weather (thank goodness). We had a cute pirate banner over the sliding glass door to the back deck. This came from Melissa too :-)

Sammy got so many amazing gifts and is still having fun learning all of them. This one is definitely one of his favorite.. his own camera.. look for posts in the future from Sammy's camera ;-)

My mom made Sammy this cute music pillow case and an amazing blanket with his name on it. He has slept with it every night since the party! (I need to get a picture of the blanket it is too cute not to share!

We waited until things died down some before we opened presents. Sammy was getting pretty tired at this point but had fun opening presents and handing out hugs as thanks. Nicia got Sammy some Nerf guns.. she promises to come over an have a fight with him!

Melissa sent me the Ahoy banner and my parents were kind enough to let us borrow this sailboat to finish off the top of the china cabinet. They also lent us a pirate garden flag and a HUGE pirate flag for our flag pole:

Here was the treasure map. I didn't get any pictures of the hunt but Sammy said he had a lot of fun. They had to walk the plank and go out through the backyard and find the big flag. Then go in the door with an X on it and find my Dad with his hat. He then told them where to find the loot:

5 Years Later

This year I tried extra hard to make Sammy's actual birthday something special and something to remember. His day started off with a string of balloons hung on his door:

We let him open one present first thing in the morning (he had to wait until after dinner for the rest).. do you think he was excited:

Next I made Sammy's favorite breakfast.. pancakes but I added a fun touch (sprinkles to the batter):

Easter Cookies and Crafts

A few days before Easter we had some friends over to make Easter cookies and a cute Easter craft! The kids enjoyed the cookies the most but the Moms loved the handprint craft the best :-)

I got the idea for the sheep from Crafts by Amanda. We just used washable kids paint so the black doesn't pop as much as the original however it was very easy to clean up!

Dear Tim,

I love you so very much! You complete me so well! My weaknesses are your strengths.. but you are so kind and gentle with your helping. You never make me feel bad for things I am not good at and I appreciate it so much!

I was looking through recent pictures and I found this gem.. I am sure I never included it in previous posts because to most people they would think I missed the picture of Sammy (which I did..).. but further inspection shows Tim's amused look as he watches Sammy cover his ears for the baskeball count down clock.. I am sure he is thinking.. how does the son of a sound guy have such sensitive ears (for those that don't know.. that is totally me):

You are such an amazing father... I love that you get right in on the action with Sammy.. like showing him the bounce house place is loads of fun:

Easter 2012

Our very fun Easter baskets (and bowls) this year were over flowing! We have been teaching Sammy the real reason we celebrate Easter. He is really starting to understand why Jesus died and that he rose again!

Since we have been working on that and learning we feel its okay to have a little fun at Easter time since its such a celebration! Left to right (Sammy's basket, Tim's bowl, my bowl, and Nicia's basket ( spend the night so I had fun picking out some fun things for her basket)):

New Church Location

Our church got to big for the building we had been renting and we recently moved to a new location. Tim runs sound for our church and was in charge of researching and buying a new sound system for the new location. So this project has been going on for a while and we were both very glad to see it finished (or mostly.. still tweaking).

So with out further ado our old building on the last Sunday (in March):

We went from two services down to one and it was amazing to see our whole church body meeting at the same time for the first time in well over a year. This was from the top balcony before the service started. We had a packed house for our first Sunday there after people filtered in:

So blessed to be a part of this amazing church and to see it grow over the past 10 years. To think it all started out in a tiny classroom:

Sammy’s First Soccer Game

So I am pretty much a month behind on posting! The month of April was CRAZY for us. We had a church move, Easter, and 4 birthdays! So I will be working to get caught back up on all the important events that took place last month. The first up was Sammy’s first soccer game… he was taking it all in here:

11 questions answered

A while ago my friend Terra tagged me in post. I have to answer her 11 questions and then tag 11 people and post 11 questions. I am going to change up the rules some.. because that is how I am but more on that in a little while! My answers are in bold after the questions!

1. Snowballs or Beach Balls and why... Beach balls – that means I am somewhere warm enough to swim and I LOVE water! I do however like the snow but not anywhere close to the amount that I like to swim.
2. The first time I heard Miranda Lambert sing "the house that built me" I immediately thought of.... My grandparents house. They lived in the same house the whole time we grew up and it was the staple in our lives. My sister and I went and spent a long time there every summer and loved it. I wrote about that a little bit here.
3. A night out with friends in a crowded place or a night by the fire with a good book? A good book by the fire! I love hanging out with people but I prefer a smaller setting that is quite and not crowded. But I love reading and if I had a fire place I would love it even more
4. Night Owl or Early Bird or both? Hmm I guess this is a relative question. I naturally stay up later than Tim but I don’t stay up real late.. I do know I am not a morning person.. I need some quite first thing in the morning and don’t try and talk to me before I go to the bathroom!
5. Now I lay me down to sleep and with me I will take... my ear plugs! I need quite when I sleep.. and time needs to snore when he sleeps.. for Christmas I got ear plugs in my stocking! I don’t wear them every night or all night.. just when I am really tired and having a hard time falling asleep!
6. The Life of Pi - read it and loved it, read it and didn't love it, couldn't finish it or never heard of it, I thought I would love it.. I bought it.. and it promptly sat on my bookshelf since then.. so should I read it?
7. Who said "Poetry and Hums aren't things which you get, they're things which get you. And all you can do is go where they can find you." and why would I love that quote? A.A. Milne (author of Winnie the Pooh) .. I had to look it up to be sure.. but I was pretty sure that is who it was! Hmm not sure why you would love that quote.. maybe because you like to listen to lyrics and find ones that capture you..
8. Big Salad or Juicy Steak? hmm neither really. How about a steak with a house salad.. if I had to pick one to eat forever over the other I would pick steak.
9. If you tickle me I will... probably give you a black eye trying to wiggle away.. If I am laying down I will also get the hiccups.. it happens to Sammy too!
10. Given a do over I would... not use it. I haven’t always made the best decisions in life but I have learned from them and grown. If I didn’t make the mistakes I did I would have made different ones and I am not sure that would have been better.. it could have been worse
11. I wonder what happened to.....Harry Potter.. I get so into characters lives I wonder what happens to them after the stories end!

Getting the Garden Ready

Tim, Sammy and I got our above ground beds ready last month. We then talked about what plants we wanted to grow and Sammy drew pictures of the things he would like to grow!

He then put them in different pots and beds around the yard. Some of the things Sammy wanted to grow were tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, and macaroni and cheese (hehe).

1st Soccer Practice

Sammy had fun at his first practice. Some of the games took some getting use to but he now loves them! Sammy is learning skills but the most imprtant things he has learned are how to play on the same team, how to share, how to fall down and get back up, and many soccer skills. The best thing about soccer is how much fun Sammy is having playing:

29 Sounds Old

I can’t believe that I am 29 years old! That number sounds old to me! I feel like I just graduated from college! I am sure next year will seem even weirder to me!

I had a hard time coming up with any idea for this years birthday post. I have written previous birthday posts at 28, 27, 26, and 25. This year I decided to highlight my favorite post from each month of my 28th year of life.

April 2011 – Sammy’s Birthday post from last year. The pictures in that post bring back wonderful memories of celebrating his birthday! The words in the post still spring true and I feel like we are seeing even more of that sweet personality!

May 2011 – The first dip of the season – we had such a blast in the pool this past year! It unfortunately started leaking at the end of the summer and we will have to do something different this year!

June 2011 – This month was a tough pick. I went with Sammy and I’s spur of the moment beach trip! We had a lot of fun and I would love to do that again sometime! However a very close 2nd was Sammy’s mural. For a whole different reasons!

July 2011- With out a doubt my favorite moment of July was watching Greg graduate from basic training! We had a lot of fun getting most of the family together as well!

August 2011- Getting to meet our sweet little nice Kira for the first time!

September 2011 – the beach trip! I picked the photo shoot but the whole trip was one I will remember forever!

October 2011 – Apple picking.. I hope to do a better job making this a tradition! However, the fire pit cookout was a lot of fun.

November 2011 – meeting Grace!! What a sweet baby girl she is! (She was born in October but this is when I got the post up about it)!

December 2011 – Cutting down our Christmas tree! I love this tradition and I love the sweet little farm we go to now!

January 2012 – I had a hard time with this month. There were so many amazing Christmas pictures. I however decided to pick my Handprint Calendar post since I loved how they turned out!

February 2012 – Stomp Rockets in the snow.. how could I not pick this post!

March 2012 – cell phone picture post! I loved seeing the little moments again! I plan to do these posts month!

I am sure I will share some photos from the birthday celebrations. Tonight Tim, Sammy and I are going out to dinner

Varsity Soccer

Sammy isn’t the only one playing soccer this season. Tim’s little sister Nicia is playing varsity soccer with her school (she is in 8th grade). The view from this field is amazing:

Sammy is playing soccer for the first time. He is getting use to it but is really starting to like it! We have been practicing in the backyard a lot. This was the day before his first practice and we wanted him to get use to his cleats and shin guards:

We use the fences on the sides of the backyard as our goals.

Sammy is definitely a leftie and loves to use that foot the most!

Sammy has gotten really good at climbing this tree in our backyard. Thankfully he can’t get very high before there aren’t enough big branches!

So I am a little behind but I am playing catch up on the blog! We didn’t get a ton of snow this year. The few times we did get snow Sammy was sick and couldn’t play in it. This was the biggest snow we got this winter so I couldn’t let it go with out a few fun snow pictures

Naked Pasta Night

Sammy loves spaghetti and would probably eat it everyday if we let him! He however is not the cleanest pasta eater ever! So when he sees that we are having pasta with red sauce he immediately takes his shirt off so he can dig in.

He doesn’t start out to bad:

But it is inevitable that he will end up a total mess:

Someday he will be able to eat pasta and not make a total mess.. until then naked pasta night followed by a bath is required! I am sure Pop Pop is wiping his computer screen trying to clean Sammy’s face

Preschool Corner–Dr. Seuss

Since it is now almost April and Dr. Seuss’ birthday is the beginning of the month we will consider this post early for next year

I haven’t been taking as many pictures of our preschool time lately. I did get a couple of pictures of our time from the beginning of the month!

Sammy did a fun matching game with a magnifying glass. He had to look at the small picture and match it up with the bigger version. I printed these from Kelly’s Kindergarten and Sammy loved the fruit matching the most!

Sammy did several different Dr. Seuss printables from all over the web. I have linked to the ones we used at the bottom of the post. I can’t tell in all of the pictures which printable is from which wonderful resource but I will share the ones we used.

Same size matching this was something new for Sammy and he really liked the difference!

I am not sure he will ever get sick of do a dot pages!

Finding upper and lowercase Hs:

Sammy has been working through the Funnix reading program and he has been loving it! We are now on lesson 19. We haven’t been doing it everyday but almost every weekday:
