"I will have to go with the first floor of the Sab, the athletic administration on the third floor of the Sab. The one by the main entrance of the RB is the best one out of the public bathrooms in the smith and RB. The JFSB is straight, I also like the Marriott school ones. They're solid . There is a hidden gem in the eyring science center on the bottom floor that I think has never been used. I like the spacious and clean ones. I don't like the ones with many stalls. I am a 1-3 stall max. The worst smelling and awful ones are the JSB one with like 6 stalls and also the one in the wilk, but those are nothing compared to the abysmal bathrooms of the men's locker room in the RB and the men's bathroom by the track in the smith field house, the one access from the rugby office."

Story Series: From the Handicapped Bathroom with Love

There is at least one thing that you can be certain about your life: you will need to use the bathroom every single day. Why live your life in the dumps (no pun intended)? It’s time to add a little bit of luxury to your porcelain cruises. I’m talking about incorporating the handicap bathroom into your daily routine.

There are many pros and cons to using the handicap bathroom as well as a few unwritten rules. There are many who think that handicap bathroom use for the unimpaired is illegal. To those who slate themselves into this category I will calm your nerves through the words of my good buddy Thomas Schmokel, a consultant who helps businesses comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Schmokel admits, “Although the blue-signed handicapped parking spaces are legally restricted, there are no laws about who is allowed to use a restroom or stall designated for the handicapped. If there are disabled people around, it’s impolite to use the handicapped restroom or stall ahead of them, but if not, you can use whichever one you want. If you like more room or need a place to hang your newspaper, it’s fine.” There you have it: legal and satisfying.

THE PROS:

1. Handicap bathrooms are legally required to have enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver a 360° turn comfortably. As well, handicap bathrooms usually double as family bathrooms. The result: an enormous bathroom all to yourself. When I’ve had a tough day on campus but I don’t feel like going home I’ll mosey on over to the handicap bathroom on the 2^nd floor of the HBLL and turn it into my home away from home.

2. Privacy – there’s no such thing as an HB (handicap bathroom) without a locking door. If you fall into the class of people who can only begin their bathroom procedure if the restroom is completely empty, these locks are like manna from heaven.

3. The HB is a bathroom for “special/unique individuals,” thus when used properly the HB will endow one with a sense of uniqueness and individuality.

4. HBs are far cleaner than their bathroom counterparts. Why? They are underutilized since many people are not familiar with the rules of HB usage.

5. There is a bar that runs adjacent to the toilet. In situations of extreme duress this bar can be used for added support. It’s also handy for hanging up a jacket or BYU custom knitted scarf.

THE CONS:

1. There seems to be an ignominy in being seen leaving a handicap bathroom. Sadly, since HBs are usually located in highly accessible areas this means that your presence in that bathroom has been noted by pretty much the whole community.

2. While on the accessibility issue it should also be addressed that some HBs have sacrificed privacy for added space. There is an HB on the 2^nd floor of the HBLL that sports a huge grate on the door (the good HB on the 2^nd floor is found right when you come down the main atrium stairs). This grate demolishes any sort of sound barrier. I have a roommate who recently had a very embarrassing encounter with said bathroom. When he walked out everyone in the library was laughing at him.

3. HBs normally have the toilet as far away as possible from the door. For those out of shape, this presents a struggle given the large size of the room.

4. Being that HBs are used one-person-at-a-time these babies pose a serious threat. Whatever mess, smell, or crude message you left on the wall can be traced immediately back to you.

5. The feeling of guilt when you walk out to see a line of ten people in wheelchairs waiting for you to finish. At that point you regret adding “watch Arrested Development on Hulu” to your list of things to do in the HB.

THE RULES: Rules to using HBs are derived from the pros and cons list.

1. The first rule to adhere to is to make sure you’ve given yourself at least a fifteen-minute window. The last thing you need is for a class or work to disrupt your amazing experience. There’s nothing worse than wishing you had more time. For some reason unknown one loses all sense of time the second that lock is clicked.

2. After locking the door you must take 3 steps in and stop. Admire your surroundings and make plans for how you will lay out all your stuff – you’re going to be there for a while and you want to make sure you’ve decorated properly.

3. If you decide to watch a show on your laptop or put on some tunes make sure the laptop is placed in a location where it won’t fall down. Once you sit down you’ve lost all agility to save it from a tumble.

4. If/When someone comes and tries the door only to find it locked you are not required to yell, “Somebody is in here!” The moron who keeps on shaking the handle will eventually realize it’s occupied. If someone does continue to try the door for a while you’re allowed to utter a silent prayer that the lock will hold.

5. When leaving the bathroom one must walk with purpose and confidence while making sure not to make eye contact with anyone who saw them leave. Before leaving, make sure no incriminating evidence has been left behind (con #4).

Deciding to incorporate HBs into your life and adhering to these rules is the beginning of an exciting new path. I can promise an immediate increase in your physical stature, mentality, spirituality, and overall well being.

#13 The Tallest of the Toilets (SWKT Floors 3-11)

Oh Mr. SWKT, you look down on us, you give us a nice view, you house the social sciences, you have so many bathrooms. This is a review of the tiny, but charming bathrooms from the 3rd floor to the 11th. They are surprisingly not all exactly the same. They are often shaped differently, some have closets, others have full-length mirrors, and there are brown and black doors.

Here are samples of the four tile schemes present:

This is a typical men's room. The majority of the bathrooms follow this layout with a few exceptions. Notice the poorly placed garbage can.

Here's the typical sink found in the b'rooms that have been remodeled in the last decade or so. Its a semi-nice faux granite. No automation to speak of in the SWKT.

Here is an example of the brown door variety.

Despite the blue tile, this is the 11th floor women's, aka Queen of the SWKT Bathrooms. There actually is not a men's on that floor. I asked a janitor why that was they she told me that that was the biggest mystery of the building's bathrooms. To me though, the biggest mystery is what are the bathrooms like in the fabled and forbidden 12th floor?

But what's this in the 11th floor women's? A shower curtain. Well, there must be a shower.

Our suspicions are confirmed. There is a shower in this bathroom for unknown reasons. Complete with a used bar of soap.

There's even lockers for you change of clothes. Who uses these?

Story Series: April Fool's

Once upon a time in my rebellious stage of life (aka 8th grade) I pulled an April Fool's Prank on my entire middle school. My friends and I got a couple tubes of icy hot and rubbed it on the toilet seats. The clear gel was impossible to see, but definitely noticeable after a few seconds on the pot. We left a couple of stalls around the school free from turmoil but news spread quickly and word got out that I was in charge. Me being the silly little mormon girl I am, freaked out and turned myself in before more damage was done. Due to my clear history I was sentenced to cleaning it all up with the janitor after school. Still pretty funny watching people come out of the bathroom and looking confused.

#12 Slytherin Common Room Bathroom (Maeser Building, Basement)

Have you ever had a reason to go to the Maeser Building? Me neither… That is, until I heard rumors of a charming place called the honors reading room bathroom. Situated directly next to honors reading room (Which, by the way, would not look out of place in Hogwarts, probably as the Slytherin common room, judging from the pretentious-looking people I saw studying there), this hidden treasure is sure to tickle your fancy.

When I walked in, I noticed two things: First, the stall doors are made of WOOD, probably some fancy tropical variety or something, but I have no idea. They’re nice though. Second, the dividers are made of MARBLE. Not metal, not plastic, not glass, but freakin’ marble! Basically, after I saw that, I knew I was in for a real treat. Anyways, this bathroom is pretty swell. There’s a full-body mirror (with a wood frame, no less), plus a shelf that looks sturdy enough to hold at least 83 percent of the leather-bound tomes from the reading room next door. The only knock on this bathroom is that the sinks are ridiculously narrow. It is literally impossible to fit your hands under the faucet. So, when I left, I only washed my fingertips. I can only assume that everyone else does the same. That means the door handle is probably covered with germs, so watch out. Overall, though, this bathroom provides a truly otherworldly experience by BYU bathroom standards. It may be out of the way, but it’s worth at least one visit.

Wood doors, marble dividers… this bodes well.

A well-placed shelf. Could be used for sitting and sleeping if you are a midget, maybe as storage space for normal-sized people.

The lone flaw… BYU’s most inconveniently-sized sink. Cool plumbing fixture at the bottom almost makes up for it, though.

A trio of urinals. Due to lack of traffic, no two have ever been used simultaneously, so I don’t know why they need those marble dividers. They look cool, though.

The larger of the two stalls. Once again, take note of the marble dividers. Doing your business here makes you feel like royalty.

The full-size mirror. When I first saw it, I assumed that I had accidentally entered the women’s bathroom because men’s bathrooms never have nice extras like this.

Last but not least, the view from the porcelain throne. You can trace wood grains while you poop!

#11 The Brimhall Building

Have you ever wondered where the Brimhall Building is or what's inside? Well wonder no more. It's on the southwest side of campus, right across from the Heber J. Grant building. Inside, you will find the communications department consisting of advertising, broadcast journalism, print journalism, communications studies and public relations. While the building may be nice, the bathroom situation is quite odd.

On the first floor you find both male and female bathrooms. They are cramped and small. The builders seemed to have just jammed them in. On the second floor you only have one bathroom, a female bathroom and on the third floor you have only a male bathroom (well, there is a female one, but it's very hidden.) This can make for some confusing and embarrassing moments as has happened to many a folk in the Brimhall building. You forget what floor you're on and the next thing you know, you're in the wrong bathroom.

Below you find the first floor. Hardly any room. The paper towel dispensers are too cool for the wall, they are stuck to the side of the divider for the stalls. (Notice the Egyptian style tile patters!)

Do you enjoy standing very close to your neighbor when going to the bathroom? Me neither. And notice the left urinal. Not so tidy if you ask me. The stench is a plenty.

Here you have the third floor. The urinals are wide mouth. Maybe if the stalls are full you could use this for number two? I think not.

The color scheme is much more appealing and the bathrooms are larger on the third floor. There is a nice black and white theme in the bathrooms and it doesn't smell too awful.

While you can also tell that this bathroom is not tidy (from the toilet paper on the ground), it is prepared for anything with the trusty (and crusty) plunger at the ready.

And finally, if you are 3 feet tall, this bathroom is perfect for you because the paper towel dispenser is about waist high.

Story Series: Separate but Equal

Valentines day, of all days, really helps highlight the difference between guys and gals. As has been illustrated before on this blog (and in one of our personal favorite episodes of The Office) when it comes to bathrooms between the genders, there is no “separate but equal,” involved. Which is one of the reasons why wandering into a bathroom that belongs to the other sex can be such a jarring experience. That, combined with the fact that going into the wrong bathroom is such a social taboo in our society that if caught doing it, one be instantly turned into a pariah, makes close encounters with the wrong restroom a unique and almost life defining experience. These slip ups turn into those stories you tell over and over again and wonder how you ever missed the stick figure in the standard gender skirt or pair of pants.

As a BYU student, the most common place for these “bathroom blunders” has to be the bottom floor of the JFSB. The JFSB is definitely a rose among the thorns on our campus. When compared to the MARB or SWKT, the JFSB is a parthenon of wisdom and good architecture. Which may explain the choice to construct the building symmetrically – the left side an exact mirror of the right. Which is all fine and dandy – until you get to the bathrooms. In one corner, the men’s room is on the left (inside) and the ladies’ on the right (outside). On the other, the men’s is on the right (still inside) and the women’s on the left (outside). It’s small structural anomaly that no one would notice, that is until they were going to the bathroom in a corner in which they were not accustomed.

My freshman year, I would leave History 201 and take quick potty break by going into the bathroom on the right. MWF, for weeks, I’d repeat this response to the call of nature. Then one day, for some reason, I found myself at the other end of the hall. Without thinking, I went into the bathroom on the right, the one that should be marked “Men’s Room.” The pink walls were the first sign of something amiss. The next big sign was when I turned to look for urinals and couldn’t find any urinals. As I saw a girl emerging from one of the stalls I realized the gravity of my mistake. I yelled a quick excuse of some sort and started running. I didn’t stop till I reached the top of the stairs outside. I’ve never been back to the bathrooms in the JFSB since. Happy Valentines day, and watch your restroom signs.

#10 The Chemistry Bathrooms (Benson ground floor)

Something that each girl at BYU will learn is that you don’t go to the bathroom during passing period.

There seems to be two solutions to this problem:
1. Never go to the bathroom on campus, particularly at the end or the beginning of an hour.
2. Find a bathroom which through alien rays or pixie dust, is not crowded.

The best way to find a bathroom that is not crowded, is to generally avoid women. This would make buildings which women generally avoid to be prime localities. It gets even better when said avoided bathroom is massive. And the bathroom next to the Fishbowl in the Ezra Taft Benson building fulfills these qualifications.

As with the Eyring and Clyde buildings, women generally do not frequent the chemistry building. But the Benson’s bathrooms are ginormous! Whether for Title IX or something about 'separate but equal' bathroom facilities for the sexes, they made the women's bathrooms the same size as the men's. So, women are now given rows of stalls from which to make their selection.

With the plethora of stalls, these bathrooms are always open to women, and even the men can make their choice in their bathroom. In all my days of being a female science major, I have run into another double-x chromosome in the BNSN bathroom approximately three times.

If you don't mind the slightly institutionalized feel of the line of stalls and instructional signs, these bathrooms are great. Keep in mind that they are for scientists and not designers.

OH HEY convenience. You don't even have to step once to get from the sink to the paper towels.

These are both really low to the ground. How often do kids go into this building? I didn't think so...

Story Series: Grandma's Gotta Go

A group of adolescent females called BYU police when an elderly female accosted and threatened them in the bathroom. The girls all went to use the restrooms at the same time and the woman was upset that there was no open stall. Police were not able to locate the elderly female.

#9 The Writing Center Bathrooms (JKB 4th Floor)

Are you the kind of person who'd take a few extra steps, maybe climb some stairs, for extra privacy in your public bathroom experience? Then this b'room is for you! I have been given several tips to check out this one because of their private nature and cleanliness.

Really, all of the bathrooms in the JKB are pretty good because they are fairly new, but the Writing Center Bathrooms really take the cake because of their limited use.

When you go, check out the HUGE handicapped stalls. You could fit a small car in them. Until found otherwise, these hold the record for Most Roomy Stalls.

Because of the low-traffic nature of the bathroom, you can be assured that both the soap and hand towel dispensers will be able to provide for all your hand washing needs.

One heads up: They are kinda hard to find sometimes (just like most rooms in the JKB, seriously). They are tucked out of the way in a secluded place--hence the extra privacy. Here's a video to help you know where they are a little better:

Story Series: Max in the Stall

Max is a life size inflatable dummy, with a plastic head and creepy staring eyes. One day, Max took up residence in a Helaman Halls women's dormitory bathroom. He brought his newspaper, dropped trou, and settled in for a long day on the loo. Though the bathrooms have three stalls, two of them were firmly locked, but Max preferred the freedom of an unlocked door. Unsuspecting co-eds would unsuccessfully test the locked stalls, and then triumphantly open the final remaining door, only to find a half dressed MAN staring creepily at them. They screamed. They tripped backwards over the in house ironing boards. They spat soda on the tile and laughed. And somewhere, someone has all of this captured on secret camera.

#8 Brewster Building (Ground Floor)

So you ask, what is the Brewster Building? Let me tell you: it's an administrative building southeast of the Wilk that takes care of facilities and grounds management. And yes, it has bathrooms too, interesting ones as you will see.

This picture is of the women's bathroom, which oddly enough is completely blue: blue floors, walls, and stalls. Rumor has it that the men's bathroom is totally pink...

RUMOR CONFIRMED

At one point in time the pink bathroom was for the women and the blue bathroom was for the men, but for whatever reason at some point in time they were switched. Which is why they are how they are now. Odd, isn't it?

At one point in time there was a bed, sheets and all, in place of the couch for people to lay on if they were feeling sick. One designer noticed a small dirt smudge on the bed one day, and quite some time later saw that the same smudge was still there. After being completely grossed out, realizing no one was cleaning these sheets, and that many people were constantly taking naps on this bed, it was decided to replace the bed with the bright blue sofa.
Something to take notice to: the hideous fake plant, covered in dust that sits on the counter in the corner below the gigantic mirror.

Also notice the extremely old, retro green chair. We are convinced we could sell it for some pretty good money on KSL because it is so extremely old.

Another thing is the chaos that is going on around the sink with the cramming in of 2 sinks, 2 soap dispensers, and 2 paper towel dispensers (pictured above). It creates a really tight space in which it can be almost impossible for someone to squeeze around you to the stalls or the other sink. This bathroom only has two stalls also which can be inconvenient at times, and the only other bathroom in the building is located downstairs.

#7 Testing Center Bathroom Usage Instructions (HGB 2nd Floor)

Almost every student on campus will be taking their finals in the Testing Center this upcoming finals week. During finals, the Testing Center gives out tests in the HGB, the JSB auditorium, and in the third floor of the Wilk. Nature can and will call at anytime of the day – especially when you’re taking a test. We will show you the (only) options you have to use the bathroom while taking a test in the HGB!

If you are inside the big testing room (or upstairs in the music room, or downstairs in overflow testing rooms for when it’s really crowded) and you gotta go, here's what you do:

1 - Grab your test, bubble/cover sheet, any notes you’re allowed to use, scratch paper, and cell phone, and go out the door you came in. Leave your backpack, calculator, pencil, and snacks at your desk.

2- Ask the person at the printer, where you picked up your bubble/cover sheet, if you may use the restroom, and they will kindly collect your testing things and let you go.

3 - Go to the bathrooms that are directly across the hall from where the main counter is, where you check out tests, on the right. These bathrooms are your only option – do not go downstairs to the bathrooms on the first floor.

WARNING: Make your trip to the loo as quick as possible. If you’re in there more than 6 or 7 minutes, the employee at the printer might think you’re cheating in the bathroom (apparently it happens all the time?) and they will send another employee to come and check on you. However, if you need more than a few minutes in the bathroom, and an employee comes to check on you, and they see your feet under the stall door, they will leave you in peace.

These bathrooms have pros and cons. There are only two stalls, and since only one student is allowed to leave the testing room and use the bathroom at a time, you will almost always have complete privacy. The only other people that might be in there are Testing Center employees or students who go right before they check out their test. The only bad thing is that if there is another person in the bathroom with you, it’s just the two of you. And that can sometimes get a bit awkward.

Personally, I think these bathrooms should be saved for test-takers only; other students can use the bathrooms downstairs (although, they smell and there’s always at least one toilet out of order). Test-takers deserve the right to have a few minutes of privacy before they go back in to the testing room with 650 other sweaty and fidgety students.

Once you’re finished, go straight back across the hall, and the employee at the printer will hand you your test and cell phone. You can go right back in to your desk to ace your final.

The steps for the other buildings are the same, but they will direct you to the bathrooms you are allowed to use.

#6 Kennedy Center Bathrooms (The Pit Stop)

The Kennedy Center (HRCB) is a small building with only three bathrooms, so let's knock out this whole building with a single post eh?

Say you get out of class in JSB and are headed to the Wilk to grab some lunch, but you realize that you gotta go, but where? You can settle for the sub-par bathrooms at either of those buildings OR stop in the Kennedy Center (which is right on the way) to use its choice restrooms. Its central location makes it a great pit stop to use during your long treks from one end of campus to the other.

The bathrooms here share a similar style, cleanliness, and traffic load--all of which are above average. They are small, but not cramped. Harry Potter may or may not live next door to the Stairs Bathroom.

My only complaint is that they are a little dim. More lighting would provide for a more comfortable experience.

Awkward place to have a chair, no? But it does have a nice leather trim. Rumor has it that there used to be a bed in one of these women's bathrooms.

They should hang up this one instead.

#5 The Holy Bathrooms (JSB, Floor 1)

The inside of these bathrooms aren't exceptionally big themselves, but this definitely a small complex. Look at this, there are 4 doors in a row with bathroom signs! Complete with Men's, Women's, handicap, and changing room.

The bad news for users: this is the ONLY option for restrooms on the first floor of the JSB. For such a large building you'd think there'd be more than one on each floor. So what does this mean for you? Yep, busy. These bathrooms are pretty busy. If you want to avoid the crowds there is another option on floor 2 directly above these, but those usually have a funky smell going on.

So why are these called the Holy Bathrooms? Because they connect to the campus baptismal font. They have been in close proximity to more spiritual experiences than probably any other bathroom on campus.

For those who don't like to touch door handles on the way out, avoid these. Speaking of which, are those not the weirdest handles ever?

PRANK OPPORTUNITY

There is an exposed theromstat that turns on the fans immediately. It goes to an impressive 100 degrees. Work the kniving part of your brain for a sec to know what I am thinking of doing.

*UPDATE* THESE HAVE BEEN REMODELED (Possibly due to BYU Bathroom's negative review)*

These bathrooms are right in the Asian Collection of the lib. But don't worry, if you are not of Asian descent, you are still more than welcome to use them.

The interior designers of this bathroom most likely had a thing for yellow and it really comes out in their work. As for the layout there is nothing really to complain about, it has ample space to handle it's usage. If it is busy, walk about thirty more steps north on you will find another pair of restrooms by the elevators.

Guys, they stories are true, the couches are really there! Do you want couches in your bathrooms? Girls fight to get there on time for a spot to sleep during the devotional hour, but at night this is good place to study if you want to get away. Please be aware, though, nursing mothers do exist and they should get first priority with couches. (If they don't, they might snap at you...)

Above and below are a couple maintenance issues if you are picky. Hopefully nothing ever crawls out of that gaping hole by the sink...
