Munster Football Association & Cork City FC have joined forces on a new project to find a suitor for the naming rights of Turners Cross stadium.

The Munster Football Association & Cork City FC have joined forces for this current project in a hope to find a suitor for the naming rights of Turner’s Cross Stadium.

Speaking on behalf of the Munster Football Association, Peter Harrington had the following to say: “We are delighted to be working alongside Cork City FC for this exciting project. It is something that we have been looking at for a while and believe it should be a major attraction for potential parties. The proceeds from such an agreement will go towards the maintenance, upkeep, and improvements we are looking to make to the stadium.”

Commenting on behalf of Cork City FC, Commercial and Marketing Manager Paul Deasy expressed the following: “This has been something that has been in the works for quite a while. When we sat down with the MFA at the end of last year and again at the beginning of this year, the subject was broached further and we both decided to move forward with this exciting opportunity. This is a fantastic opportunity for any business or entity to garner huge exposure from one of Ireland’s best known stadiums.

Listen to the interview below to hear Paul Deasy speak to Trevor Welch on 96FM’s “The Score” last the weekend.

Interested parties can email pdeasy@corkcityfc.ie or call Paul on 083 031 7834.

Cork City midfielder Conor McCormack has been named the SSE Airtricity / Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for April.

Cork City midfielder Conor McCormack has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for April.

It is the second time McCormack has won the monthly award which was presented to him today by John Cotter, first team coach of Cork City FC.

McCormack put in a number of impressive displays during the month as City have collected maximum points to start the season.

Cork City also have the meanest defence in the league and have leaked just five goals so far.

Defensive midfielder McCormack – who reckons any of his team-mates could have won this award – prides himself on clean sheets and CCFC racked up four in five games during April.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted, over the moon to win it. I have to say a big thanks to my team-mates though. They have made me play better. Any one of them could have won it. There are a lot of players playing at the top of their game right now. I was delighted just to get nominated.

“It’s nice to win it because it means people aren’t just appreciating us as a free-scoring side but also appreciating the hard defensive work we’re putting in too.”

John Caulfield’s league leaders hold a 14-point advantage over Bray Wanderers in second spot but McCormack insists the side are not thinking about a league title just yet.

He explained: “It’s far from over. We’re not going to worry about any other team, we’re not bothered by anyone else. I’m pleased with how we’ve started, it’s been great. We’re playing well and we don’t stop playing until the final whistle.”

In winning the award, McCormack beat off competition from Bray Wanderers star Gary McCabe, who finished second in the voting. McCormack’s Cork team-mate Garry Buckley was third.

Goalscorer Kevin O’Connor was a happy man following Cork City’s Europa League win over BK Hacken of Sweden on Thursday evening.

The full back scored the game’s only goal – getting to the end of Greg Bolger’s free kick midway through the first half and was full of praise for all of his team-mates when speaking to the media afterwards.

City now play Belgian side Genk in the third qualifying round of the competition.

“I think it’s a great achievement. We knew they were going to come here and step it up a gear again. I thought we had a nervy first 20 minutes, they threw everything they could at us but after that we settled down and you could see how good we were on the counterattack and how good everyone is once we get it down and start playing as well.

“It was great to get the goal but it was a team performance and the main thing is that we’re through to the next round and that’s the priority. We’re just looking forward to the next round now.”

John Caulfield was delighted with his side’s 1-0 over BK Hacken on Thursday evening, a victory that securing the club’s progress into the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

“I said all week that Hacken were better than they were last week and right from the start they put us under pressure,” he said, speaking to the media afterwards.

“You could see the pace and movement of them but we spoke all week about keeping our shape, keeping our concentration. We made two mistakes in the first half to give them two opportunities and Mark McNulty made two great saves but we got a great goal from Kevin.

“We got in at half time and we felt they didn’t have enough to break us down, even though they had lots of the ball. In four European matches, we won two and drawn two. It’s phenomenal – all the players deserve massive, massive credit. I said all along this year that the spirit and drive in this team.

“We asked all week for the support to come out and the noise level was fantastic, and I’d like to thank them. There are all gone home wet but they’re happy and we roll on to next week.
