The Collect:
Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

International Prayers:
We continue to pray for conflict in the Middle East. We pray for peace and deescalation as more countries could be drawn into this conflict. Just as you can divert the kings heart like a stream of water, we pray you would direct people towards peace.

Road Work Near the Cathedral:
The eastbound lanes on Washington St. between Orange and Magnolia are closed. The westbound lane will remain open until the final paving scheduled for October (the new asphalt work should take approximately 3 days). Please plan your travel accordingly!

Dean's Hour with Fr. Garrett: Exploring the 39 Articles
Sundays at 9 a.m in the Great Hall
Fr. Garrett Puccetti is teaching a series exploring the 39 Articles will take us through the Reformation Era "Articles of Religion" to show how Anglicanism has sought a middle path between the reformers of the continent, and between Protestant and Roman Catholic faith and practice.

International Prayers:
We pray for the continuing Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, now the second largest Ebola outbreak in history. We pray for the public health workers, for those who are sick, and for families and friends grieving the deaths of loved ones. We pray for mercy and healing.

The Rev. Canon Curtis Benham Called as 15th Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke

With great joy, we announce that the Rev. Canon Curtis Benham has been called to serve as the 15th Dean of the Cathedral Church of Saint Luke!

This announcement comes after many months of prayerful discernment and thoughtful work by our Dean Search Committee, Cathedral Chapter, Bishop Justin Holcomb, Canon Dan Smith, and the diocesan team. We give thanks to God for His guidance throughout this process and look forward with great hope to this new chapter in the life of our Cathedral.

Please join us in praying for Canon Benham, his wife, Michelle, and their children, Samuel, Ginny, and Margot, as well as Trinity Parish and our Cathedral family, as we prepare to welcome them. Canon Benham will begin his ministry with us on December 1, 2026.

Our New Dean: The Rev. Canon Curtis Benham

Dear Cathedral Family,

It is with great joy that I announce that the Rev. Canon Curt Benham has been called as the 15th Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke. The Cathedral Chapter voted unanimously to call Canon Benham, with the consent and full support of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Justin S. Holcomb, Bishop of Central Florida.

This announcement follows many months of prayer, thoughtful conversation, careful discernment, and collaboration. The Dean Search Committee and the Chapter carried this work, with the encouragement and counsel of Bishop Justin, the Rev. Canon Dr. E. Daniel Smith, Canon to the Ordinary, and the Rev. Canon Ellis Brust, Canon for Clergy in Transition, along the way. That support allowed us to conduct a thoughtful and thorough search while remaining attentive to the Cathedral's history, its present life, and our hopes for the future.

Canon Benham comes to the Cathedral from Trinity Parish in St. Augustine, in the Diocese of Florida, where he has served since September 2020 as associate rector and as pastor of Trinity's North Campus, a new congregation and preschool he was called to plant and has led from its first service. Located in the Silverleaf community of St. Johns County, the campus has grown in two years to an average Sunday attendance of 230. He currently serves as a Regional Canon in the Episcopal Diocese of Florida, a role to which he was named in 2024.

Ordained a priest in 2011, Canon Benham previously spent two decades in Atlanta. He first served on the staff of a large regional church, ministering to teenagers and their parents, and then answered the call to plant a new church in the Vinings neighborhood, where he served as founding rector for ten years.

Canon Benham describes himself as a Scripture and Prayer Book loyalist. He believes worship that is faithful to Scripture and ordered by the Book of Common Prayer can be offered in a range of styles, while his own heart is with a high church expression of the Prayer Book liturgy. At the center of his ministry, in his words, is "the good news of Jesus Christ, his life, shed blood, death, resurrection, and ascension, all for us sinners' salvation."

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Canon Benham graduated from Episcopal School of Jacksonville and earned a bachelor's degree in English education from Florida State University. After college, he helped start a college ministry in Timisoara, Romania, with Cru, then returned to the States to earn his Master of Divinity at Southeastern Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He and his wife, Michelle, also a Jacksonville native, have three children: Samuel, Virginia "Ginny," and Margot. He enjoys fly fishing, climbing mountains, walks with his kids, and bird watching with Michelle. The Benhams are looking forward to making Orlando and St. Luke's their new home.

In accepting the call, Canon Benham wrote:

I'm humbled and honored to accept the call to serve as the 15th Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke. Your faithfulness to the gospel and love for the Lord, for each other, and for your neighbors is well known, and I count it a privilege to be called to serve you as your new Dean.

My priesthood has been, and I pray will continue to be, defined by a deep commitment to the proclamation of the good news of Jesus through Word and Sacrament and in the beauty and holiness of our Prayer Book tradition, caring for the souls of the people I'm called to serve, teaching the Bible, and helping churches intentionally move forward into continued health, growth, and mission. It will be my joy to serve such a wonderful cathedral church!

I believe St. Luke's is well prepared for its next chapter, and I cannot wait to see what the Lord will do in our midst.

Bishop Justin offered this commendation:

Canon Benham is a preacher of the gospel. He announces what God has done for sinners and sufferers in Jesus Christ, and he announces it with warmth and without apology. He knows how to hold what is strong in a congregation and lead it forward at a pace it can sustain, deliberately and without leaving anyone behind. St. Luke's has long been a place where Christ crucified and risen is preached faithfully, and where the liturgy and music are offered with reverence and beauty. I am grateful that this will continue under his leadership. I am glad for the people of St. Luke's, and I look forward to what God will do through the Cathedral in downtown Orlando and across this diocese.

Canon Dan added:

I look forward to welcoming him and his family to the Diocese as well as the Cathedral. The Cathedral Search Committee did the hard work of developing a clear understanding of the Cathedral, its history and its present story, and their work allowed the Chapter to choose someone that I believe will be a terrific Dean for our Cathedral.

To honor his commitments to Trinity Parish, Canon Benham will officially begin his ministry with us on December 1. The outstanding clergy, staff, and lay leaders who have guided the Cathedral faithfully through this season of transition will continue this work until he arrives. The Chapter is planning visits between now and December 1 to provide opportunities for Cathedral members to meet Canon Benham and his family. More on that to follow. Canon Benham is already committed to participating in some diocesan events before December as well. He will join us here at the Cathedral on Saturday, October 10, for the ordination service to be held that day, and again at Diocesan Convention on Saturday, November 7.

On behalf of the Chapter, I offer my deepest gratitude to the members of the Dean Search Committee, especially co-chairs Chip Vanture and Holly Strawn. They approached this responsibility with faithfulness, wisdom, discretion, and genuine love for the Cathedral. We are grateful for the countless hours they devoted to understanding our congregation, listening to its hopes, reviewing candidates, and discerning whom God might be calling to serve among us.

Based on the Stephen Ministry book Caring Assertiveness, this discussion group will explore practical, faith-rooted approaches to communicating with greater clarity, grace, and confidence in our relationships, workplaces, and ministries. Participants will read assigned chapters in preparation for each week’s conversation. Books will be available for $8 cash.

International Prayers:
We pray for the elections in Guinea-Bissau this past week as they decide how to move forward with the current military junta. We ask for just leaders that will work for the common good of the country.

We pray for the ongoing violence in Haiti. We ask for your intervention to disrupt cycles of violence and poverty.

Road Work Near the Cathedral:
Beginning Monday August 24th, the eastbound lanes on Washington St. between Orange and Magnolia will be closed. The westbound lane will remain open until the final paving scheduled for October (the new asphalt work should take approximately 3 days). Please plan your travel accordingly!

International Prayers:
We pray for the ongoing Ebola crisis in the DRC and ask for a reduction in the number of those who catch the disease and for their suffering to be comforted.

We pray for the long running civil unrest in Myanmar and pray for wise and just leaders who will care for their people.
