“Chris has about 40 horsepower on me, so I knew I would have to do something drastic to run with him,” explained Thibedeau, who rides Dunlops. “He would open up a huge gap on the straight and then I’d catch back up in certain areas. My big concern was him getting away. Chris Peris is a fast guy. He went a little wide in the carousel and I went underneath. I take that turn much more shallow than he does so it was a good passing place for me.”

Peris, riding the No. 8 Iron Horse BMW / Evan Steel Performance BMW S1000 RR, won the Jim Cox Racing Unlimited Superbike race earlier in the afternoon – setting up a dramatic showdown for the next round of the CCS Series when it travels to Peris’ home track at Inde Motorsports Ranch in Willcox, Ariz. Peris conducts his racing school at Inde and owns the track record on the 2.75-mile course.

“I ran a little bit wide in the carousel and it’s super slippery if you get offline,” explained Peris, also a Dunlop rider. “I wanted to chase him down but then decided to be careful.” Peris will be racing Infineon and Miller later this spring. Having an AMA rider of his caliber in the field generated added excitement for the local racers.

“Unlimited GP was exciting because Chris Peris was here,” said Dustin Apgar, who rode the Pirelli-shod No. 31 DTR Motorsports / Bazzaz Suzuki 600 to a third-place finish in Unlimited GP. “That’s the only reason I had my 600 in the 1000 class. It’s nice to see where you line up against a real AMA rider and a real AMA bike. It was a nice battle for 1 or 2 turns – but I was stoked to hang with those guys on my 600.”

The Championship Cup Series Southwest Round 4 will debut at Inde Motorsports Ranch on Sunday, May 22 in Willcox, Ariz. Trackdays for riders interested in testing this exciting new course are scheduled for April 30 and May 1, as well as on Saturday, May 21. “Iron Horse BMW is happy to add the Title Sponsorship of CCS Southwest to our AMA sponsorship of Chris Peris on the BWM S1000RR for 2011,” said John Cartwright, owner of Iron Horse Motorcycles in Tucson, AZ.

“We partnered with Iron Horse BMW last year to sponsor Chris Peris for his AMA Superbike efforts. We are extremely happy to be able to add CCS Southwest to our sponsored events this year,” explained Evan Steel, owner of ESP.

As CCS Southwest expands from its home track at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix to the new INDE Motorsports Park at Willcox in southeastern Arizona, having two premier Tucson-based road-racing sponsors will build regional interest in the series.

Although we wanted to, we didn’t spend the summer sitting around the pool drinking our favorite adult beverage. We spent our summer break slaving away, giving you – the racers – a more convenient way to preregister. With the help of XCEL Trackdays, you can now preregister for all our races and the Saturday track day online.

If you want, we still accept pre-registration the old-fashioned way, by faxing them in.

The choice is yours.

We’re moving from the Main track to the West track for the May round.

Firebird informed us late yesterday that they had begun construction on the drag strip portion of the Main track and that it would not be completed until the end of May. This obviously is a problem, since we were suppose to race on Main this next round.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know who is coming out. We apologize for the last minute change, but circumstances were out of our control.
