Sermon Notes

INTRODUCTION TO REVELATION

Revelation 1:1-3 (NASB95) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, 2 who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near.

Revelation Certainty:

It is to reveal Jesus

It is to reveal what is to take place soon

It was revealed to John

It promises blessing to those who read/hear

You will find that in the end, JESUS CHRIST WINS!

Fundamental issue of John’s day was, ‘Who will I worship?’

DATE AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Revelation 1:18 (NIV) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

WHAT KIND OF LITERATURE IS IT?

A letter

Revelation 1:4 (NASB95) John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne

A Prophecy 1 Peter 1:11-12

Apocalypsis

LITERARY STRUCTURE

‘listen and look’

Revelation 1:7 (NIV) 7 Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.

Revelation 4:2 Look! A throne and one sitting on it

Revelation 5:5 (NIV) 5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See [look], the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."

Revelation 14:1 (NIV) 1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads.

Revelation 19:11 (NIV) 11 I saw [look] heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war.

Revelation 21:3 (NIV) 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, [look]"Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.

Revelation 4:1 (NIV) 1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this."

Revelation 11:19 (NIV) 19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

Revelation 15:5 (NIV) 5 After this I looked and in heaven the temple, that is, the tabernacle of the Testimony, was opened.

Revelation 19:11 (NIV) 11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war.

1:1 – 8 Prologue

1:9 – 3:22 The Son of Man speaks to the 7 churches

11:19 – 15:4 The cosmic conflict

15:5 – 19:10 The bowls of wrath and the fall of Babylon

19:11 – 22:5 The Man on the horse leading up to the coming of the City of God

22:6 – 21 Epilogue

Check out the beginning on another set of images: 7:9; 11:15; 15:2; 16:17; 19:1; 21:2.

The Prologue and Epilogue set up 3 unseen realities:

1. Jesus is coming

1:7 ‘Behold He is coming’

22:7 ‘I am coming quickly’

22:12 ‘I am coming quickly’

22:20 ‘I am coming quickly’

2. The Time is near

1:3; 22:10.

Mark 1:15 (NIV) 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

3. Jesus is beginning and end

1:8; 1:17; 22:6; 22:13

Revelation 22:20 (NIV) 20 He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

{audio}http://sermons.cdac.ca/2012.01.22.mp3{/audio}

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 4:11-16 (NIV) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

BIBLICAL ATTITUDE REGARDING AUTHORITY

Romans 13:1 (NIV) Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

1 Peter 2:17-18 (NIV) Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

PURPOSE OF AUTHORITY

1. Maintain Doctrinal Purity

1Timothy 3

2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV) 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Acts 15:19-21

2. Prevent False Teaching

1 Timothy 1:3-7 (NIV) As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith. 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

There are three levels of Christian truth:

3. Model Faith

Hebrews 13:7, 17 (NIV) Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

17 Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

2 Timothy 2:14 (NIV) Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.

Ephesians 4:2-3 (NIV) Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

PROTECTION OF AUTHORITY

1 Timothy 5:19 (NIV) Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.

{audio}http://sermons.cdac.ca/2012.01.15.mp3{/audio}

Sermon Notes

Three common storms:

Change

Failure

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (TLB) 9 Two can accomplish more than twice as much as one, for the results can be much better. 10 If one falls, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he's in trouble.

Rejection

This week when someone is hurting you can give:

Hear, listen to the hurt

Hug, give the gift of touch

Help, help them out

I. THE REASONS FOR CONFLICT

l. Competing Desires

James 4:1-2 (TLB) 1 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Isn't it because there is a whole army of evil desires within you? 2 You want what you don't have, so you kill to get it. You long for what others have, and can't afford it, so you start a fight to take it away from them. And yet the reason you don't have what you want is that you don't ask God for it.

2. Assumptions

3. Judgment

4. Suspicion

Galatians 5:13-15 (NIV) 13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. 14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

II. THE REACTIONS TO CONFLICT

1. MY WAY.

2. NO WAY.

3. YOUR WAY.

4. HALF WAY.

5. OUR WAY.

III. THE RESOLUTIONS

1. INVITE CHRIST INTO YOUR SITUATION

Ephesians 2:16 (TLB) 16 As parts of the same body, our anger against each other has disappeared, for both of us have been reconciled to God. And so the feud ended at last at the cross.

2. TALK TO GOD ABOUT THE CONFLICT

James 4:2 (NIV) 2 You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.

3. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM

Matthew 7:3 (NIV) 3 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

4. HOLD A PEACE CONFERENCE

Mt 5:23-24 GN ‘If . . . you remember your brother has something against you, leave your gift in front of the alter and go at once to make peace with your brother, then come back and offer your gift to God.

Choose right time

Choose right place

Pray before the meeting

5. ESTABLISH GROUND RULES PRIOR TO THE FIGHT

Never compare

Never condemn

Never command

Never challenge

Never condescend

Never contradict

Never confuse

Proverbs 11:29 (TLB) 29 The fool who provokes his family to anger and resentment will finally have nothing worthwhile left. He shall be the servant of a wiser man.

6. SWITCH YOUR FOCUS

Philippians 2:4-5 (NIV) 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

7. ASK FOR ADVICE

Prov 15:12 GN Conceited people do not like to be corrected. They never ask for advice from those who are wiser. Prov 15:22 GN If you refuse to learn you are hurting yourself.

8. DON’T GIVE UP

Recognition

Reaction

Resolution

Galatians 6:9 (NIV) 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

{audio}http://sermons.cdac.ca/2012.01.08.mp3{/audio}

Sermon Notes

OFFENSE IS AN ASSAULT ON FELLOWSHIP:

Koinonia or fellowship is translated: as

‘community’ (Phil 2:1 Msg)

‘participation’ (1Cor 10:16 NIV)

‘contribution’ (Rom 15:26)

‘generosity’ (2Cor 9:13 GW).

Philippians 4:15b (CEV),-“partner by giving”

Hebrews 13:16 (CEV)-“share your possessions”

2 Corinthians 8:4 (CEV)-“joy of giving their money”

1 Timothy 6:18 (CEV)-“be generous and share”

I. THE PROBLEM

Luke 17:1 (NKJV) 1 Then He said to the disciples, "It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!

2 Timothy 2:24-26 (NKJV) 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Two Categories of Offended:

Those treated unjustly

Those who believe they have been treated unjustly

Often conclusions are drawn frominaccurate information

Or information is accurate but the conclusion is distorted

Revelation 3:18 (NKJV) 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

The Truth About Life is:

God refines us through afflictions, trials and tribulations.

Stop blaming other people so that you can see yourself.

II. THE PROCESS

Matthew 24:10-13 (NKJV) 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Offense

Betrayal

Hatred

1 John 3:15 (NKJV) 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

III. PRESCRIPTION.

1. LET JESUS SETTLE THE SCORE

Romans 12:17+19 (TLB) 17 Never pay back evil for evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honest clear through. 19 Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. Don't take the law into your own hands.

1 Corinthians 6:7 (NKJV) 7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated?

I’ve been forgiven by God

Resentment makes me miserable

I need forgiveness in the future.

Matthew 5:7 (TLB) 7 Happy are the kind and merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.

2. LET JESUS SOOTH MY WOUNDS

Psalm 23:5 You anoint my head with oil;

Psalms 147:3 (TLB) 3 He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds.

3. LET JESUS SATISFY MY NEEDS

Psalm 23:5 my cup overflows

1 Peter 4:8 (NKJV) And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love covers a multitude of sins.”

Sermon Notes

Matthew 2:1-12 (NIV) 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 6 "'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"

7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Luke 13:31-33 (NIV) At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you." 32 He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.' 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day--for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

Luke 23:6-9 (NIV) On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.

Sermon Notes

MARY’S SONG:

Luke 1:38 (MSG) Yes, I see it all now: I'm the Lord's maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.

Luke 1:46-55 (NIV) And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me-- holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers."

JOSEPH DRAMA:

Matthew 1:20-25 (NIV) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers." JOSEPH DRAMA: Matthew 1:20-25 (NIV) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>CDAC,CDA</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://sermons.cdac.ca/2011.12.11.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Sermon Notes

Matthew 1:18-25 (NIV) This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Luke 10:1-4 (NIV) After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Sermon Notes

Matthew 1:18-25 (MSG) The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that.) 19 Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced. 20 While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. 21 She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—'God saves'—because he will save his people from their sins." 22 This would bring the prophet's embryonic sermon to full term: 23 Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Emmanuel (Hebrew for "God is with us"). 24 Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God's angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. 25 But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.

It can poison our relationship with Jesus.

It can create stress in our relationships.

Luke 12:15 (MSG) Speaking to the people, he went on, "Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot."
