Construction work on the new Mississippi River bridge in St. Louis is proceeding quickly. Approach ramps in Missouri and Illinois are progressing, foundation piers have been placed in the river, the two cable-stayed towers have been built, and the roadway and cabling has begun. What it is like to design and build a structure to span the most traveled river in America? How far down in the bedrock do the foundations need to go? How do you design for seismic forces and fluctuating river levels and speeds? Ask these questions and more as you interact with engineers, designers and constructors who are building a new bridge over the Mississippi River in St. Louis.

The main focus in this program will be on the foundation work that has been completed to create the piers on which the bridge’s two signature cable-stayed towers now stand. How were the foundations built? What did it take to drill the shafts into the bedrock and pour the concrete? How were the waters of the river dammed off to make construction possible? Viewers will see images and view videos of the construction process as well as interact with the professionals working every day to build the bridge.

We live in a world full of microbes – bacteria and viruses! Our skin and other surfaces are densely inhabited by bacteria. Our intestines are full of bacteria. We have more bacteria in our intestines than cells in our bodies! These bacteria help us digest food, they help us develop resistance to infections and they control the development of allergies. Current research has shown that we interact in many different ways with our internal “bugs.” Only if these bacteria try to invade our bodies do they present a threat. Join us to see how humans and our microbes cooperate to maintain us in good health and to see what might happen when things go wrong.
