A few weeks ago, you were sent an email from our district technology department, requesting that you update your child's health information and over-the-counter medication permissions for this school year.
If you have not yet done so, please log on and complete the permissions. It will make it so much easier for me, and your child, if I have this information on hand.

Q. What can families, students, and school personnel do to keep from getting sick and spreading flu?

Families, students, and school staff can keep from getting sick with flu in three ways:

Practicing good hand hygiene. Students and staff members should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol- based hand cleaners are also effective.
Practicing respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and sneezes, so it’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
Staying home if you’re sick. Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.

Students, staff, and their families must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of the virus by practicing these steps to keep from getting sick with flu and protecting others from getting the flu.

Immunization Letters

Letters have been sent out to those 6th graders who - according to our records - do not have the required immunizations for 7th grade. Although this is a very early notice (one year ahead!) it gives plenty of time to obtain the immunizations before the next school year. Students who do not have the appropriate immunizations for 7th grade (Tdap and MCV) will not be able to start school in August 2018. If you have received a letter, please send in your immunization record as soon as the immunizations are received!

6th and 7th graders --- Exam Forms!

It's time to turn in 6th grade physical forms and 7th grade dental forms!
These exams are mandated by the State of Pennsylvania, and must be completed for school attendance. Examinations from the past calendar year can be accepted. Find the blank forms on our website.
Students may also see the school doctor or dentist at no charge. Please contact the school nurse for information.

Flu Clinic at UHS

Does your rising 7th grader have the required immunizations (Tdap and meningitis) to start school in August? If not, you may want to utilize the services of our local health department.

School Dentist and Doctor Visits

The school district dentist, Dr. Merle Saldivar, will be at the middle school on April 25th, performing dental examinations. The school district physician assistant, Lindsey Calio PA, will be at the middle school on April 28th, performing physical examinations. If your student still needs the required State examination, please consider utilizing these services. There is no charge for these exams. Just call the nurse's office with your request.

6th Physical and 7th Dental Exam Reminders

It is time to turn in, and/or schedule, your 6th grader's physical exam or your 7th grader's dental exam. If your child's exam is still outstanding, you have received an email from the CFPMS nurse's office. Our school doctor and dentist will visit in the Spring of 2016. Please let me know if you'd like your child to see our school provider.

New Game Causes Concussions

Several Patton Middle School students have sustained concussions caused by a "game" that is called table topping. These concussions have not occurred during the school day, but have occurred when our students get together in social activities outside of school.

According to Urban Dictionary, table topping is defined as "an innocent bystander is standing up. Someone gets on their hands and knees behind them, and another person pushes, making them fall backwards."

Please discourage your student from engaging in this activity, and caution them to the injuries which could result. Thank you!

Nurse's Office New Location!!

As of Monday, June 8th I will be temporarily occupying Room 108, on the Route 82 side of the building.
I expect to be in this location for the first few months of the 2015-16 school year, and look forward to a renovated office in 2016!

School Physical Exams, April 29

If your 6th grader, or new student (any grade) has not had the PA required physical exam, the school physician will be at CF Patton Middle School on the morning of Wednesday, April 29th. If you would like your child to see the school physician, please let me know and I will add your child to the schedule. Immunizations will not be given at school during these exams.

Breakfast is an essential part of the school day. Students who eat breakfast come to school, ready to learn. Many students visit the nurse's office with stomachaches and headaches, related to not eating breakfast. Please read the attached link from Nemours, explaining the importance of breakfast and offering simple breakfast ideas.
