Unqique jewelry is an icing on your cupcake...I mean outfit! Interview with Dandelyne's designer

2013-07-25T12:51:00.000-07:00

I love cupcakes (everyone knows about it), and I also love shopping (well, I am just an ordinary girl). I always try to find pieces that fit my personal style, my body type and my personality and somehow original. I don't usually shop online, except for shopping for jewelries though. I am addicted to Etsy and have been using Etsy a lot for unique pieces to match my personality and style=)

Months ago, I found this amazing jewelry shop from Australia on Etsy - Dandelyne is a very unique place to get unique and original, and personalized jewelries for yourself, your family, and friends. I am so honored to have a chance to have an interview time with the maker and the creator behind all things Dandelyne, Sonia Lyne (I like to call her Son) and spread out her amazing works to share with my readers.

Son has been addicted to embroidery since she was young. Her designs can be described as colourful, whimsical and sweet. Each piece truly celebrates many facets of life; family, friends, colour, simplicity and fun. Combining a love for embroidery and all things mini, the goal is always to always deliver on quality, love and originality.

Her signature design and best seller is the miniature embroidery hoops . They are designed by Son and laser cut in Melbourne (Son's home). Son and her hubby spend many nights sanding, drilling and constructing each hoop. The unique miniature hoops are used to frame her designs and are made into necklaces, brooches and key rings. There come with two sizes: 4cm and 5.5cm. They are also now available in DIY kits. Personalized designs and portraits are also highly valued and requested. She loves the challenge of working out how to best illuminate each person and pet in a way that is truly unique. I ordered mine for my wedding anniversary; it's a TALK OF THE TOWN necklace! I got so many compliments on it.

Enough introduction, let's get to know Son more:

Mrs. G (aka Me): When did you find out you love sewing?
Son: I remember when my love for embroidery, fabric and sewing began. I attended a small rural school of approx. 70 children. I was in year 2, and on a Friday afternoon the boys would head to the oval for“boy stuff” and the girls would head to the library for embroidery classes with Mrs Mulrooney. This makes me giggle now, but I do have the fondest memories of this time. I remember piercing the fabric with my needle and creating my very first running stitch. I was instantly taken by it. It was from this point that I began my love affair with all things stitchy and crafty. There was no stopping me from this point.

Me: How did you make the jump from hobby to a business?
Son: I knew when I starting embroidering I wanted to turn it into something that I could sustain forever. It began as a hobby but I knew in my heart, and I was determined, to make it into a business. It has been a year and a half and now feel like I am running a business.

Me: Do you still enjoy sewing as your hobby, or is it more like business, another word, work, to you now?
Son: I sure do! I have had a few career changes in my time and after having my third boy I made a conscious decision to pursue a path that would make me smile all over. I enjoy sewing, and making, in a variety of mediums but many, such as making clothes, are areas I only want to dabble in from time to time. The difference with embroidery is that I want to do it 24/7. If I didn't have to eat and sleep I can only imagine how much I could get done :-D.

Me: Where do you get your inspiration from for your works?
Son: My inspiration comes from anything that is colourful, whimsical and sweet. I really like to stitch about the moments ,and areas, in my life that truly make me happy. I feel that the possibilities are endless and Dandelyne could go off on so many tangents. My goal is to embroider the world.

Me: Could you share with us what is your favorite piece of work you have done so far?
Son: My favourite piece so far would have to be the first piece I did, which was our family portrait. We have it placed near our front door and it always reminds of how Dandelyne began. Most recently I stitched a custom portrait for a customer that I absolutely loved doing. It was a full embroidered design of her beautiful Whippet. It is very different to my normal style but, a style in which I hope to play with a lot more in the future.

Me: How do you manage your 5 "marbles" or I should say 5 boys, your mutilpe hobbies and your business at the same time? (Son is a Melbourne based girl , with 5 beautiful boys in her life … one big (hubby), 3 small and 1 furry.)
Son: Managing working from home, family life and play is definitely tricky. I find being organised is essential. There are times when things clash and I need to evaluate what is important in that moment. Generally I am super organised and I utilise the time I have when my youngest is sleeping , during the day, to really delve into Dandelyne. Many nights are spent sewing too. Mornings, afternoons and most weekends are out of bounds for Dandelyne. This is family time. Stitching does tend to sneak into weekends when the boys are having some quiet time.

Me: This question is definitely for my own curiousity, do you take cupcakes over cake?
Son: Cupcakes win hands down. It's like your eating little pieces of artwork and the best part … you can never stop at one ^_^.

Check out Son's etsy shop today: http://www.etsy.com/shop/dandelyne
Her jewelries will definitely brighten up your outfit!!! and shop for some unqie gifts for your family and friends, it will make them smile=)

Sweet Chat with Book Authour and Amazing Artist, Jessie Oleson Moore

2013-05-31T13:46:00.000-07:00

I lose count of how many times I have told people how much I love Jessie Oleson Moore. We first met at her former art gallery and shop in Seattle few years ago; and I could say that, she is ONE OF THE KINDEST PERSONS on earth! I have been a devoted fans of her blog, CakeSpy ever since then.

Couple years ago, Jessie Oleson Moore wrote this most amazing and creative recipe book: CakeSpy Presents: Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life. I bought it and have been loving the book; the recipes in the book is so easy to follow and extremely innovative. The ultimate success of her first book was leading her to prepare the second book, the Secret Lives of Baked Goods. I have not bought this new book yet, but definitely put it on my TO-DO list. Here is a sweet chat between Jessie and I about her new book and some of her future new projects:

1) Your first book was such a great hit. Did it give you any pressure of preparing your second book?
Interestingly, my first book didn't figure much into the experience of the second. I think this is probably because they are SO different. I did feel more insecure at points about my writing, though, because the first book had just headnotes and the second actually required paragraph structure and storytelling rather than just telling about the recipes. It was almost like writing another first book!

2) Tell me and our readers a little bits about your new book and how did you come up with the idea of the theme?
I've always thought that foods taste better with a backstory. You know, grandma saying that she won grandpa over with her apple pie, or something like that. I thought that by choosing the stories behind well-known baked goods that are accessible to everyone would be a fun and engaging theme--especially for those who, like me, can read cookbooks as if they are novels!

3) Do you have any book tour/book signing in California? If yes, when and where?
I was in San Francisco last month, at Omnivore Books and Book Passage, respectively. Though it's not specifically a book event, I will be at the Renegade Craft Fair in Los Angeles this summer and will be selling books at the event.

4) It looks like you travel quite a lot for your passion and work, is there one place in the world you desperately want to check out? And why?
If I could make myself a traveling machine that transported me free of cost to anyplace, I'd choose Vienna--I think of it as a pastry Mecca.

5) Do you think the doughnut trend will overtake the cupcake craze?
These things come in cycles. Yes, more doughnut shops are opening and it makes for good press and a new "it" baked good (fried good?) but really it amounts to the same thing: sugar is tasty and we want it. Same thing, different delivery method. But am I eating more doughnuts as of late? Heck yes.

6) Do you have new projects coming up?
I am working on a pitch for my third book right now!

7) Do you have any artists (could be a chef, pastry chef, writer, illustionist, fashion designer, etc) you want to pair up with to create something amazing?
If I could conjure up a dream team of people to work with RIGHT THIS INSTANT, it would be: Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, They Might Be Giants, Stanley Tucci, and Dorie Greenspan. Why Stanley Tucci? Why not?

8) Any new sweet artworks you would like to share with us?
Did you know that I did all of the illustrations in my new book? It's rather a different style for me and I'm quite proud! Here are some examples in my book:

Little Bird Cupcakes

2013-05-30T09:43:00.001-07:00

Couple months ago, I made these cute mini cupcakes for my customer. I made some pink and purple birds and flowers to match the invitation of the baby shower. They were the cuttest thing to eat, and everyone loved them (according to my customer).

A Special Way to Say Good Bye

2013-04-24T15:24:00.000-07:00

New York Eats reports that a new father, Chris Holmes from the U.K., who works as an immigration officer for Border Force at Stansted Airport has turned in a very unquie "resignation letter" to his boss, aka a "cake letter". The father of a new born son said, "Having recently become a father I now realise how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me and other people happy,"

So are you curious what the flavor of the "resignation letter" is? A carrot cake made with coconut, pecans and grapes and frosted in orange buttercream, what a great way to say good bye!

Mystery Murderer Dinner Party

2013-04-03T15:40:00.000-07:00

Each year I try to do something different for my birthday, of course, this year was no expection. I wanted to do a mystery murderer themed party for my birthday for a long time. This year, I was able to make it with help from my friends and family, I was one happy birthday girl!

My friend had a mystery murderer party few years ago for her birthday. She kept most of the materials and I borrowed the materials from her. She and her husband were helping me to plan the party since they had experience of what we should do.

For decoration, I had started thinking of how to decorating my party about a month before the party. I set few themed colors first (red, black, gold and white). And work around with those colors and added little details to match the 1940s theme. Luckily, the themed colors at my house are red and little black, so I could easily reuse some of the decoration stuffs and frames from home and repurposed them. We also created a photo booth and some photo props for pictures. Everyone had a great time of taking pictures of the photo props I made.

For desserts, I made few different desserts for the party, including donut holes and smore bites and of course cupcakes. They were so yummy and great for us to walk around to communicate with other characters to find out who the murderer was. I also made some little tags for each desserts, so people know what they were eating.

For food and drinks, we order Italian food from a local Italian restaurant. Their price was very reasonable and food was great. We also sticked with wines and old fashioned drinks the whole night. We had two speical cocktails, Bee's Knees and Old Fashioned. For non-alcohol beverage, we made cucumber rosemary lemon chiller; it was so refreshing!

I am so happy that most of my friends dressed up for their parts too. They made the party even more memoriable than it could be.

Here are some more pictures:

Found this old newspaper picture and a prescription for alcohol drinking online.
Yup, you needed to obtain a prescription for drinking back to the 1940s.

Snow White Cupcakes

2013-03-08T12:45:00.000-08:00

It's a busy, but fabulous Fabruary! Both my and my mother-in-law's birthday were falling in this Fabulous Fabruary. I had a great birthday celebrationS (will be uploading pictures soon). On top of celebrating both of our birthdays, we also celebrated an overdued birthday for our great aunt.

Our aunt loves (or should I use obsessed with?!) Princess Snow White from Disney. I made some Snow White cupcakes to surprise her at our birthday dinner. She was so amazed by all the detials on the cupcakes. We were glad to see her happy and enjoyed looking and eatting her favorite Princess.

Love is a many splendored thing!

2013-02-13T15:06:00.001-08:00

I have made some engagment celebration cupcakes for my friend begining of this month for celebrating her cousin's engagement. She gave me ideas of what the couple love (such as OPI nail polish, XBOX, the nephew they baby-sit, the school the groom graudated from, etc.) and I created few more love inspired cupcakes just to tight the whole love and engagement theme together. They came out so "LOVE-LY"! My friend told me that her cousin was surprised by this "LOVE-LY" cupcakes. I am glad to create this special "LOVE-LY" moment for them=)

I think cupcakes are the best way to celebrate all the occassions!

Super Mario Brothers Cupcakes

2013-02-08T08:40:00.001-08:00

This is not the first time I made Super Mario Bros themed cupcakes. In fact, this is my 4th time within these two years. Each time, I tried to twist it a little bits or throw some new characters in (unless the client wanted the same old ones I made).

My client, Dory contacted me and told me that her 29 birthday was coming up in two weeks and would like to order some Super Mario Bros themed cupcakes from me. She wanted one dozen with the more complicated design and another dozen she wanted some minimal design cupcakes.

So I tighted the two dozens togerther with the Super Mario Bros theme and her birthday. They came out cute and she was extremely happy. I was glad to see her and her guests happy because that is my job=)

Cat Cupcakes

2012-12-19T09:10:00.001-08:00

OMG! I can't believe I have not updated anything here since last month. I FINALLY decided to post some cupcakes I crafted early last month for a cat themed tea party.

My client sent me pictures of her 4 lovely cats and she is very open minded for any design. So I came up the design to match her mice invitation and some cat toys and fishes....and OF COURSE, her 4 cats. I wanted to keep everything French inspired simple and modern. They came out amazingly adorable! And everyone at the party loved them.

Under the Sea Baby Shower's Cupcakes

2012-11-01T08:57:00.000-07:00

First of all, I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween. Also praying for those who have been suffering from Hurriance Sandy in the east coast.

It's been too long since I last updated my "creations". I got couple orders for parties this weekend. The themes for both parites are very cute and unique. I will share pictures of the second party with everyone later this week.

Here are some mini cupcakes I made for the first party. It's a baby shower for a baby girl, the theme is "Under the Sea". Since the mini cupcakes are so tiny, I needed to keep all the decorations simple and catchy. The flavors of the cupcakes are carrot cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, red velvet cupcakes with white chocolate rose water frosting and the last but not the least is Japanese honey cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting...

Cupcake Nuggets

2012-09-21T12:39:00.000-07:00

I saw this very innovative creation on the Cupcake Activist's blog. It didn't only make me craving for cupcakes, but chicken nuggets too. They looked so real and so cute! I need to make this one of these days=) Perfect sweet treats for kid's birthday party or bridal/baby showers=)

The recipe is originally from a blog, called the Cupcake Project. According to the creator, "Cupcake nuggets are cupcake pieces breaded with cupcakes and then deep fried. Cupcake nuggets look enough like fast food chicken nuggets to fool all but the nugget connoisseur, but taste like doughnuts with crispy, sweet exteriors."

The Ranch Restaurant Dessert Review

2012-09-07T11:34:00.000-07:00

Last week, Mr. G, I and few of my foodie friends went to the Ranch restaurant and Saloon to celebrate our long weekend. The reason why I knew about this place because one of our friends works for the adjacent engineering company, which owns by the same owner of this resturant and saloon. It's great to go with my friend because he got us 20% off on our bill since this is a high end resturant. The 20% really helped to save some from our wallets.

The food and service were both beyond amazing! I hate to go to a restaurant, where servers don't know anything about their menu and their wine list. The servers here totally blows our minds away. They were VERY attentive, TOTALLY knowlegable about their food, wines and desserts and quite funny. We learnt so much about wine paring and food from our server that night; that's a plus aside from having a great dinner. They have a special prixfixe dinner menu for 65 dollars per person this Summer. The menu came with 3 amazing dishes plus a dessert; adding an additonal 35 dollars, you could get pairing wines to go with each of your meal. If you are foodie like me or aventurers, this menu was ways worth the price.

I didn't mean to turn my sweet blog to be a foodie review blog. So I am going to ONLY focus on reviewing the desserts here; however, I will post some pictures from our main dishes just to share with everyone how amazing the dishes looked and tasted.

WATERMELON 50-50 BAR

Limoncello Semi Freddo / Sugar Queen Melon Soup

it was part of our prixfixe menu. They used watermelon to create two different textured desserts - watermelon soup and watermelon bar. To be honest with you, I don't quite like foamy type dishes because it reminds me of shampoo. I liked the watermelon bar though. It's very refreshing with a hint of mint flavor.

RANCH BLUEBERRY CROSTATA

Meyer Lemon Curd / Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

My friend ordered this and I had a bite of it; and let me tell you this one was amazing! the warm pastry mixed with the tart flavors of the lemon and blue berry were irresiable.

PBJ & MILK CHOCOLATE BAR

Concord Grape / Caramelized Banana Ice Cream

Another well made dessert. Textrue was jello-y like a pana cotta. It's GREAT enough to make Elvis to jump out from his grave. LOL

-The excutive chef and the excutive pastry chef of this restaurant are brother. I think their family must be very lucky to have them to make Thanksgiving meal.
- The owner of the Ranch owns his own farm, the Edwards Ranch Estates in the foothills of the city of Orange and the Santa Ana mountains. The Ranch supplies organically grown produce to the Restaurant & Saloon.
- If you are hard core Country music friends, you need to check out their saloon. But don't forget your cowboy hat and boot though. Otherwise, you will feel out of place.
-Pairing your dessert with this wine - 2008 Dr. Loosen Estate, Eiswein. Trust me, you won't regret. It's very good dessert wine.

Deep fried egg from the Chef

Appentizer from the prixfixe menu -

LOCAL DAY BOAT CAUGHT BLACK COD - melt in your month good black cod.

LIBERTY FARMS DUCK SCHNITZEL - the duck meat was really tender and juicy.

GRASS FED COLORADO LAMB LOIN -

compared to the Cowboy 36oz Ribeye, this dish was not as good. Still good if there is no comparision.

The famous Cowboy 36oz Ribeye. Very juicy, tender and all the fat of the meat made everything tasted even better=)

It is more agreeable to have the power to give than to receive.

2012-08-31T08:51:00.000-07:00

It's been a long time since I updated my last post. I am so glad to report that our Cupcake-Sell-A-Thon for Brendan and his family was a great success!

I made the following flavors for the Cupcake-Sell-A-Thon last week:

The Summer Cupcake (vanilla cupcake with strawberry frosting)

Coca-Pop Cupcake (chocolate and coca cola cupcake with cherry frosting)

Ms. Rosie Cupcake (vanilla cupcake with rose water frosting)

The Dude Cupcake (chocolate cake with bacon bits, PB frosting and champagne pomegrate filling)

The Classic Cupcake (vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream)

The Chocolate Lover (chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting)

Everything was sold within the first half hour, and we even needed to limit people to buy only 2 max. for the first round. Some people even gave me more money than the cupcake actually cost. Besides selling those amazing cupcakes, we also have a secret auction for a half dozen cupcakes, which came with each flavor) to boost more funds for the family. The secret auction went so successfully and it got sold for 100 dollars=) I hope that the funds we collected during the sale could help Brendan and his family to pay off some of their bills. Also, glad to hear that Brendan is a very tough little guy. He has been recovered very well and hopefully, he could leave the hospital by end of this year.

Ms. Rosie Cupcake without the rose pedal

The Classic Cupcakes and the Summer Cucpakes were both sold out quickly.

Coca-Pop cupcakes are a lot of people's favorites

Ms. Rosie Cupckes got dressed up with a edible rose pedal

The Dude Cupcakes are not just popular among the dudes.
They were so popular among the ladies too.

Hurry up, only two Ms. Rosie left!
And Tony (Brendan's dad) shared some recent pictures of the family and Brendan with us.

Gone Gone Gone...

The secret auction. The half dozen got sold for 100 dollars!

This time, I gave up using fondant for decoration. I used edible rose pedal for the Ms. Rosie Cupcakes, a small stripe of bacon for the Dude Cupcakes, and a cherry and a straw for the Coca-Pop Cupcakes...they came out as cute as my hand crafted fondant toppers.

I had so much fun of planning and organizing this Cupcake-Sell-A-Thon and I was touched by all the kind people, who came out and support. This meant a lot to me, Brendan and his family. You guys ROCKS!

Great Compliment

2012-08-23T09:35:00.000-07:00

I have shared some cupcake pictures of Dana and Tim's travel themed wedding on my last post this week. Today, I would like to share this great complimentary email I received from Dana's mom, Debbi, who I also mentioned on my last post.

Below is her compliment about our service and our hand crafted decorative cupcakes:

I thought the cupcakes turned out fantastic!! They were soooooo adorable- everybody was commenting on them. All that attention to detail - just so cute! They really pulled together the travel theme. And they were delicious too - that's the best part. (My favorite flavor was the chocolate peanut butter, and I still can't decide which was my favorite fondant topper - all so cute!.) Thank you so much...

Thank you again so much. I'll definitely be recommending you to my cupcake loving friends.
Debbi

I have been very busy and stressful for my full-time job lately. Debbi's compliment has certainly put a big smile on my stressful face. I am happy to see my clients and all their guests enjoyed the cupcakes and amazed by the decoration on top of them. Debbi even send me a link of the professional pictures of their wedding. If you are interested to see more pictures of the wedding and our cupcakes, head over to here Jason Burns Photography. The pictures are wonderful; they captured all the important and sweet moments of the wedding. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and unique and it totally represented Dana and Tim.

Congratulations to my lovely client, Tim and Dana, who just got wedded last Saturday! They had their vintage travel themed wedding at Green River Golf Club in City of Corona last Saturday. the venue was great and at a convenient location (not too far away from the guests, who travel from Orange County, Los Angeles County and Riverside County).

They were such an easy to get along couple, and gave me a lot of freedom to do my designs for them and showed them my creative ideas. I could not ask for a better client! Also, thanks for Debbi, Dana's mom for being such a great coordinator between me and the couple. Since the couple was studying in Egypt and also travelling in Europe before heading back to the U.S., it's not easy to communicate with each other due to the time difference and the availability of internet access. Debbi was such a big helper for me to help the couple to create the wedding cupcakes for the wedding.

Here are some cupcake pictures from their wedding:

Luggage tag with Tim and Dana's name on it. Yellow flower to match their invitation and flowers at the wedding.

This couple travelled many places together. A little airplane was the perfect guest to be part of their witness at the wedding.

21 dozens cupcakes (favors from the top - Lemon cupcakes with vanilla buttercream, chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting, chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting, French vanilla cupcakes with strawberry butterncream).
Cutting Cake on top (vanilla cake with rasberry filling with vanilla buttercream)

Love cruise
