Jaipur is famous for its ancient and pink-colored architecture. The city of some four million people is also notable for its ancient forts, history, and recent features in many Hollywood and Bollywood blockbuster films.

The “pink city” has experienced a rapid level of urbanization and population growth similar to other parts of India. In recent years, Jaipur has also become very reliant on groundwater resources due to pollution, urban encroachment, and climate change, which have all impacted the quality and availability of its traditional surface water resources. This over extraction and gradual pollution of groundwater has led to water resources becoming threatened. Water supply is expected to become much more scarce, less secure, and reliable, as quality is expected to degrade even further in the next decade, in a growing demand scenario.

To address these challenges, Jaipur has turned to industry experts and Singapore, which has successfully tackled similar water scarcity issues through its highly successful NEWater (Recycle and Reuse of treated wastewater) programme and water portfolio diversification and integration strategy of Four National Taps. Singapore has set a new benchmark in the successful implementation of projects for indirect potable (drinking) and direct non-potable (non-drinking) applications by close integration of advanced treatment technologies, public education and participation, water safety management, and public private partnership investments.

“Through this programme, Singapore’s water management technology and project implementation experience will be shared with Rajasthan government and the PHED officials. CH2M HILL is pleased to help deliver this programme by providing full access to our thought and knowledge leaders in integrated water resource management, drinking water treatment quality, public/stakeholder engagement and advanced water recycling. The success and learnings of our similar projects for larger cities, such as Delhi and Bengaluru will be leveraged. This will benefit Jaipur city to help diversify its water resources portfolio,” says CH2M HILL Vice President and lead for the program, Vinod Singh.

For more than 35 years, CH2M HILL has led the way in water recycling projects around the globe, implementing more than 500 projects and giving the firm a depth of experience unparalleled in the industry.

(NRCE) and CH2M HILL are pleased to announce they have been awarded a contract to provide engineering and technical support services to the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Missions, Bureaus and Offices worldwide in the implementation of the Agency’s Water and Development Strategy. This is a multiple-award indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, with a ceiling of $1 billion, over a five-year period of performance.

Under this Water and Development IDIQ (WADI) contract, NRCE and major subcontractor CH2M HILL, along with a team of partners including Deloitte Consulting, Futures/GRM Group, IMPAQ International, JE Austin, IDEO, NEWDEA and Panagora Group, will provide services in water programming to improve health through the sustainable delivery of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as advance water resource management in agriculture for enhanced food security. In support of WADI, the combined team will help USAID prioritize and implement water solutions to protect public health and increase sustainable development.

“Despite many developing countries peoples’ reliance on agriculture to support their livelihood, rural farmers have been unsuccessful in producing sufficient amounts of food to feed their respective populations. The limiting factor for sustainable agricultural production, especially in sub-Sahara Africa is the lack of an adequately developed water supply. NRCE’s experience and knowledge gained during the last several decades in development of water supplies and agricultural production which are implementable under the conditions of developing countries’ social and economic environment is expected to support USAID’s goal of minimizing food insecurity and reduce water-borne diseases,” said Woldezion Mesghinna, NRCE’s President and Founder.

“We are pleased to work with NRCE and USAID to advance the long-term goals of the Agency’s Water and Development Strategy,” said Greg McIntyre, CH2M HILL’s Global Water Business Group President. “Water is fundamental to development and by emphasizing the sustainable use of water in saving lives and promoting sustainable development; we can help USAID achieve its humanitarian objectives.”

From 1998-2001, NRCE participated in CH2M HILL’s Department of Defense Mentor Protégé Program. CH2M HILL, who has earned numerous awards for small business subcontracting, has been an official mentor to many federal mentor protégé programs for the last eight years and is pleased to work with NRCE on this contract, one of three set aside for small businesses.

CH2M HILL’s Senior Vice President and Director of Planning Mark Morris met with President Obama, senior administration officials, and other U.S. Government federal suppliers to discuss benefits of these companies’ GHG emission reduction targets or to make new commitments to disclose emissions and set new reduction goals. The companies represented at the roundtable each do more than $1 billion a year in business with the U.S. Government and together account for about $45 billion in federal contract spending.

President Obama has issued a new Executive Order that will cut the federal government’s GHG emissions 40 percent over the next decade from 2008 levels and increase the share of electricity the federal government consumes from renewable sources to 30 percent.

Together, the combined results of the federal government actions and supplier commitments will reduce GHG emissions by 26 million metric tons by 2025 from 2008 levels, the equivalent of taking nearly 5.5 million cars off the road for a year. And to encourage continued progress across the federal supply chain, the Obama Administration has released a new scorecard to publicly track self-reported emissions disclosure and progress for all major federal suppliers, who together represent more than $187 billion in federal spending and account for more than 40 percent of all federal contract dollars.

CH2M HILL set an absolute GHG reduction goal of 25 percent between 2012 and 2017 for global operations. The company is already well on its way toward the 25 percent goal, through a facilities management plan that includes reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions for vehicles and buildings at its most energy-intensive project site; improving efficiency of four LEED-certified headquarters buildings, which are also ENERGY STAR certified; and implementing office behavior-based energy conservation programs. The Obama Administration’s new scorecard reflects CH2M HILL’s commitment as a low-carbon contractor.

“It’s a huge honor to be included at this White House Roundtable,” CH2M HILL CEO Jacqueline Hinman noted. “As a leading provider of climate mitigation, adaptation, and carbon management solutions, we also wanted to set a meaningful internal climate action goal to do our part to mitigate climate impacts. We encourage other organizations and companies to join us in setting aggressive GHG reduction targets. It’s not just good for the environment—it’s also good for business.”

In addition to today’s recognition from the White House, in late February the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, and The Climate Registry, recognized CH2M HILL for excellence in GHG management in the fourth annual Climate Leadership Awards program. The Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management – Goal Setting Certificate recognizes organizations that publicly report and third-party verified, organization-wide GHG inventories and publicly commit to aggressive GHG emissions reduction goals.

As an industry leader and one of the first in its sector to publish a Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship Report in 2005, CH2M HILL manages the impacts of its own operations and helps clients become more sustainable—whether dealing in master planning, program management, facilities and land development, sustainable cities, water, waste, transportation, energy and carbon management, environmental work, site revitalization, industrial systems or long-term operations and maintenance. Visit us at ch2mhill.com, twitter.com/ch2mhill and facebook.com/ch2mhill.
The Business Compact, which was launched in 2011 as part of the UK Government’s Social Mobility Strategy, aims to promote fairness and equal opportunity and asks businesses to open their doors to raise aspiration, increase fair access to the jobs market and provide career opportunities for those from all backgrounds.

Last year, CH2M HILL colleagues from across the UK volunteered over 1,000 hours to provide support for various community investment programs the company runs and help unlock social mobility in disadvantaged communities. Throughout 2014, CH2M HILL helped provide mentoring for college students, host school career days and skills and employment fairs in communities across the UK, as well as running a residential program alongside the Social Mobility Foundation to inspire and prepare students considering a career in engineering.

These initiatives have helped provide the essential tools and support for young people to develop long-term careers and have played a key part in CH2M HILL’s investment in tackling social inequality. For 2015, the CH2M HILL Foundation has provided grants totaling $140,000 to three UK charities to support and develop social mobility campaigns and complement the ongoing work the firm does across the UK in this area.

Commenting on joining the Business Compact, Jonathan Refoy, Director of European Corporate Affairs at CH2M HILL, said: “CH2M HILL is delighted to be a signatory of the Social Mobility Business Compact – it is a really important mechanism for businesses such as ours to contribute to unlocking social inequality and widening opportunity for all to achieve success in our society.

“CH2M HILL is proud of the work we do across the UK, through mentoring, engagement with schools and skills and employment advice; however, there is always more that firms and the wider business community can do. This Business Compact helps join companies up and create a more inclusive environment to enable better social mobility and unlock a more diverse workforce. This is important not only to reflect the communities we work in but also creates a more rounded and resilient economy in the UK.”

Talent Board’s annual Candidate Experience Awards are an industry benchmark that celebrate companies that meet their standards of candidate experience. CH2M HILL was assessed on how its internal process impacts on applicants, reinforced by a random sample of the company’s 2014- 2015 candidates who rated their experiences.

CH2M HILL's Talent Acquisition team members also followed up with a video interview entry in which they answered detailed questions about the specific process and efforts made in order to ensure the experience of applying for jobs at CH2M HILL is a positive one.

Commenting on the win, Andrea Laws, International Talent Acquisition, said: “We are delighted to have been named the winner of the prestigious award, which recognizes not only the Talent Acquisition and Deployment Center, but also the hiring managers and wider CH2M HILL team involved in hiring and selection.
The public consultation, which also included representatives from Transport Scotland, sought the views of the public and other stakeholders on how the different access strategies and indicative junction layout options for Dalwhinnie affected them, and whether there were any other options that the design team should consider to provide access to the A9 from the Highland village.

The 6-mile Dalwhinnie to Crubenmore section of the A9 is one of the three A9 dualing projects which CH2M HILL Fairhurst is managing, and makes up part of the wider £3 billion program to dual the A9 from Perth to Inverness by 2025.

Mr Brown and attendees at the exhibition were able to view fly-through videos to help visualize how the different options for the junction and upgraded road might look. Further public consultation and an opportunity to comment on the overall route options is planned for later in 2015.

Commenting on the exhibition, Neil Stewart, contract manager for CH2M HILL Fairhurst on the A9 Dualing from Glen Garry to Dalraddy, said: “We were pleased to work alongside Transport Scotland in hosting Infrastructure Secretary Keith Brown to this event at Dalwhinnie. Mr Brown’s visit highlights the importance of the work we are carrying out on the A9 Dualing Program and its wider significance to the connectivity and regional economic benefits that will be unlocked through the upgrading of this major road. We look forward to continuing our work with Transport Scotland in the route development options and the next stages of delivery of the A9 program.”

“CH2M HILL is honored to partner with Parsons and FOA Consultores on what is perhaps the largest greenfield airport of our generation to be built in Latin America,” stated CH2M HILL’s Transportation President Terry Ruhl. “The New International Airport for Mexico City will be the gateway to Latin America, competing with the best airports in Asia, the Middle East and around the world.”

The first phase of Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México (New International Airport for Mexico City) will have three runways and will be able to handle simultaneous operations with a capacity of 50 million annual passengers. Subsequent phases will add three more runways and will ultimately handle 120 million annual passengers.

“Parsons and its team is honored to have been selected to support the Ministry of Communications and Transport and the country of Mexico in bringing to fruition a program that will create a world-class airport that serves as Mexico’s gateway to the world—and dramatically improves the current limitations for travel as well as promotes economic growth and job creation,” said Todd Wager, Parsons Group President.

The scope of work consists of:

Program/Project Management

Design Management

Construction Management (Planning & Program Level)

Contract Management

Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer

Existing Airport and Project Closure

In addition to the airport work, the program management team will manage the design and development of access roads, utilities, hydrologic/hydraulic, environmental issues and the airport city. The new airport will help to solve the air transport needs of Mexico City, provide a global gateway to support Mexico’s status as a top trading nation and generate jobs to further accelerate economic growth.

“I have joined CH2M HILL in 2010 as an apprentice and during that time have been involved in iconic projects such as Crossrail. The main attraction for starting an apprenticeship was that I would be able to develop and gain experience within the industry in which I was going to work, as well as having a foothold in such a huge internationally known company. I knew that as I progressed I would be able to gain knowledge from experienced colleagues around me to help pursue opportunities. On top of this, earning money while I work was a huge bonus for me without taking on the considerable debt of pursuing other routes to my end goal.

“Working on the Crossrail project has been my main chunk of work since joining CH2M HILL as an apprentice and I have experienced first-hand some of the monumental achievements and milestones the project has reached during this time. The main opportunity it has given me is to be responsible for my own areas of work, having ownership over the ground engineering scope of the project has allowed me to excel and gain an advanced understanding of an extremely crucial element of tunnelling works, which I can and will use on future projects that I want to work on.

“I believe the hard work and dedication I put in to my responsibilities while I was working as an apprentice has led others to be have trust in me, giving me the opportunity to undertake the role I am currently in. The fact that my progression was mapped and had periodical goals allowed me to see how I was performing and developing over time. I would highly recommend people interested in pursuing careers in engineering consider an apprenticeship – it has provided me with vital training and work experience opportunities whilst helping me map out a career development route to achieve future goals and reach the next stage of my professional career.”

“I believe an apprenticeship was the best the choice for me as it allowed me to study whilst also being able to work at the same time.
“The main benefit of the apprenticeship for me was my ability to work across the business and get different experiences throughout my time as an apprentice, so when I finished I knew exactly the type of work and projects that I wanted to do.

The World’s Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes those organizations that have had a material impact on the way business is conducted by fostering a culture of ethics and transparency at every level of the company.

As a seven-year honoree, this award underscores CH2M HILL’s commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices, ensuring long-term value for clients, employees and the communities in which the company operates.

“We are very proud of our World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition for the seventh consecutive year,” said Jacqueline Hinman, CH2M HILL’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Our employees uphold high ethical standards and values, and this achievement is a true reflection of that. CH2M HILL was built on a strong foundation of doing the right thing, and we will remain true to who we are, as we serve our clients and our communities with distinction.”

“Receiving the World’s Most Ethical Companies designation for the seventh straight year is an honor that belongs to every one of our 25,000 global employees, who day in and day out believe in and deliver our work according to the principles set forth in our Little Yellow Book and our Employee Ethics and Business Conduct Principles,” said William Brierly, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer. “Each day, we have the privilege to work on some of the most complicated and life-changing projects in the world, and we are proud to deliver that work in a way that not only meets our high standards, but also ensures we make a positive contribution. Personally, I would like to thank each of our employees for their contributions to the overall success of CH2M HILL and for giving us the opportunity to again receive the distinction of being one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for 2015.”

“The World’s Most Ethical Companies embrace the correlation between ethical business practice and improved company performance. These companies use ethics as a means to further define their industry leadership and understand that creating an ethical culture and earning the World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition involves more than just an outward facing message or a handful of senior executives saying the right thing,” said Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “Earning this recognition involves the collective action of a global workforce from the top down. We congratulate everyone at CH2M HILL for this extraordinary achievement.”

The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient™ (EQ) framework developed over years of research to provide a means to assess an organization’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The EQ framework and methodology is determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere’s network of thought leaders and from the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20%), culture of ethics (20%), governance (15%) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10%).

The event brought together apprentices just entering the industry, as well as senior directors, recruitment specialists and the project manager from industry body, the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium, to discuss the importance of apprenticeships in the engineering industry. Sir Peter began the session by setting out the national skills gap within the STEM sector and how apprenticeships are a key part in helping to plug this gap and develop the next generation of British engineers. The discussion then saw CH2M HILL apprentices share their career experiences while outlining how industry can work more closely with the education sector to increase the number of apprentices.

CH2M HILL has been a leader in its sector on apprenticeships and is one of the six original members of the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium (TAC). Since its creation in 2010, CH2M HILL has played an active role in the organization, which was set up to increase the number of young people taking up apprenticeships and to provide a work-based route for aspiring engineers.

Commenting on National Apprenticeship Week, Mark Thurston, European Regional Managing Director and former apprentice, said: "I am passionate about apprenticeships and urge any young person interested in science, engineering or maths to consider pursuing an apprenticeship. Having been through that career path myself I have experienced first-hand the exciting journey being an apprentice can provide, the numerous areas of a business one gets exposed to and the career development opportunities available as a result of this.

"With the UK in the midst of an infrastructure boom, there are fantastic opportunities for young people to get involved in some of the most iconic projects our country has ever seen and develop for themselves distinguished and varied careers. As we enter National Apprenticeship Week 2015 I look forward to seeing the sector come together to tackle the skills shortages we have seen in recent years through placing investment in apprenticeships at the very centre of this."

These awards recognize exceptional business performance in the environmental industry in categories such as revenue growth, acquisitions, innovative project designs, new practice areas, new technology development, social contributions, industry leadership and more.

CH2M HILL projects which received award recognition in 2014 include:

Development of the Coastal Change Adaptation Planning Guidance for the United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, which defines a four-stage approach to control and manage coastal change risks for existing and future development through the planning system.

Investigation and assessment of explosives contamination at the World War II Defence Site Maribyrnon in Victoria, Australia, which enabled the Australian Department of Defence to move forward with critical planning needed to remediate the site and divest the 127 hectare property for redevelopment.

The company also received an EBJ award for its acquisition of Canada-based TERA Environmental Consultants, which expanded the firm’s offerings in siting, licensing, permitting, and environmental planning services for Canada’s pipeline, power line, and oil and gas industries.

“CH2M HILL is honored to receive the EBJ/CCBJ awards, but this achievement would not be possible without the partnerships we have with such great clients around the world,” said John Mogge, CH2M HILL's Director of Technology, Practice and Design. “Our employees thrive by working with our clients to solve complex challenges and thereby advance the environmental and climate change industries.”

The 2014 EBJ and CCBJ Business Achievement Awards will be presented on March 12, 2015, during a special ceremony at the Environmental Industry Summit XIII—an annual three-day event hosted by the EBI Inc. in San Diego, Cali.

CH2M HILL set a goal of 25 percent reduction in absolute GHG emissions by 2017 for global operations as compared to a 2012 baseline. The company is achieving this reduction through a facilities management plan that includes reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions for vehicles and buildings at its most energy-intensive project site; improving the efficiency of four LEED-certified headquarters buildings, which are also ENERGY STAR certified; and implementing office behavior-based energy conservation programs. This is CH2M HILL’s first reduction goal encompassing its global, company-wide Scope 1 and 2 footprint. In past years, however, CH2M HILL has communicated goals for emissions reductions associated with business travel, North American facilities energy use and various Scope 3 initiatives.

The Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management Award recognizes organizations that publicly report and verify organization-wide GHG inventories and achieve publicly set aggressive GHG emissions reduction goals. The 17 awardees in five categories are honored for exemplary corporate, organizational and individual leadership in reducing carbon pollution and addressing climate change. Recipients have demonstrated leadership in managing and reducing GHG emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into their operating strategies.

“I am proud to recognize CH2M HILL and all of our Climate Leadership Award recipients for their actions to reduce the harmful carbon pollution that’s fueling climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “Our winners are providing the leadership, commitment and solutions needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and meet the challenge of a changing climate head on.”

Elisa Speranza, CH2M HILL’s Chief Communications Officer and Executive Sponsor for Sustainability, accepted the award at the 2015 Climate Leadership Conference in Arlington, Virginia, on February 24, 2015. “This is a huge honor and we are proud to be recognized by the EPA,” Speranza said. “Inspired by the creative ways our clients and partners are committed to creating a healthy and vibrant economy, society and environment for future generations, we decided to establish a 5 percent annual reduction commitment and encourage other organizations and companies to join us.”

Verdantix, an independent analyst firm focused on sustainable business issues, has named CH2M HILL a U.S. leader in EH&S technology services, sustainability consulting, environmental services, sustainable engineering and climate change consulting. These recognitions exemplify CH2M HILL’s commitment to sustainable practices in the company’s internal operations, project delivery services and in the communities it serves.

Heyman Wastewater Treatment Plant to receive its 2014 Plant Operations Excellence Award. The award is presented annually to facilities that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in management, operations, and maintenance.

CH2M HILL performed original facility design and construction management of the plant in 1988 and has since provided operations and maintenance services at the 10 million-gallon-per-day extended aeration activated sludge plant. In December 2013, CH2M HILL renewed the O&M agreement with the city for 5 years plus two 5-year options. In addition to the plant, the company maintains 57 miles of collection lines, 24 lift stations, the stormwater drainage system, including four pump-assisted injection wells, and biological nutrient removal systems.

“This award not only demonstrates Key West’s commitment to excellence but is a testament to a successful partnership between CH2M HILL and the City of Key West in protecting the fragile marine environment of the Florida Keys by changing how the city handled its wastewater,” says Steve Meininger, CH2M HILL Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Operations Management Services.

The award-winning facility also earned the Florida DEP Operations Excellence Award in 2012, 2009, and 2004, as well as numerous other industry awards for excellence in operational performance and safety.
