RESEARCH PRESENTATION: R&D Spillovers Impact on Firm Productivity at the 33rd European Association for Research in Industrial Economics Conference

Dr Mario Kafouros, Lecturer in International Business at CIBUL presented a paper at the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics Conference on the impact of R&D spillovers on the productivity of Multinational Entreprises.

The paper investigates the direction and magnitude of R&D spillovers. Using panel data for multinational firms, it shows that although all MNEs benefited (in terms of productivity) from their own industrial R&D, only smaller and technologically sophisticated MNEs benefited from the research efforts undertaken by other firms within, as well as outside, the industry to which they belong. The findings indicate that the impact of R&D spillovers on the productivity of smaller MNEs – which usually introduce incremental rather than radical innovations – is even higher than that of their own R&D. By contrast, larger and low-tech MNES may be adversely affected by R&D of other firms. The results also imply that the concept of technological distance needs refinement as firms can utilize research results from apparently unrelated industries.

The 33rd European Association for Research in Industrial Economics Conference is one of the biggest conferences in the field of industrial economics attended by more than 450 participants; it took place in the economic division of the University of Amsterdam; 25-27August.

The aim of the Association is to provide a professional society for academics and practitioners with an interest in the field of Industrial Economics. The Annual Conferences of the Association provide the focal point of communication for members. At these meetings, which are held in a different country each year, selected ongoing research work is presented and discussed.

First Evidence of the India Centre Contributing to House of Commons' Inquiry on "Trade and Investment Opportunities with India"

The House of Commons Trade and Industry Committee has now released the two volumes published as a result of its public inquiry on “Trade & Investment Opportunities with India”. Both are available for download from the Committee’s website at http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmtrdind.htm.

Volume 1 included a direct quote from the submission of the James E Lynch India & South Asia Business Centre (page 28).

Volume 2 includes the submission, as written evidence, of the India Centre’s contribution to the Inquiry (Appendix 19, pages 139-142).

This is the first public evidence of the contribution of the India Centre to policy-making at the highest national level (House of Commons).

One year after its creation and only a few months after its formal opening by His Excellency the High Commissioner of India in the UK, the contribution made by the India Centre to the House of Commons' Inquiry on India is the first public evidence of the relevance of the India Centre's output to the needs of its user base, be it made of local firms, multinational firms, research institutions, or in this case policy-makers.

Prof. Peter Buckley chosen as the Third Recipient of the Viipuri Prize in Strategic Management and Business Economics

Professor Peter J Buckley, Prof. in International Business and Head of the Centre for International Business, University of Leeds (CIBUL), has been chosen as the third recipient of the Viipuri Prize in Strategic Management and Business Economics at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland for his "outstanding record in the field of international business research".

It will be awarded at the Viipuri Prize Ceremony at Lappeenranta on September 7th 2006.

The first two Viipuri Prize awardees were David Teece from Berkeley and James March from Stanford.

CIBUL ranked No1 International Business Research Centre in the World

"Using 10 years of publication data (1995–2004) from four leading international business journals, we examine global patterns of international business research and school rankings. Although US institutions still lead in the international business research, non-US schools are making significant progress. Asian-Pacific and European schools are well represented among the schools that account for the most articles appearing in the four journals. International collaboration between scholars across the globe appears to enhance school ranking".
