Abstract:

This presentation was designed to provide insight into the world of Advanced Persistent Threats, the damage they wield, and methods to combat them. The speaker will seek to cast a light on why these often simple and sometimes antiquated attack techniques are proving so effective at taking advantage of some of the biggest powerhouses of industry, technology and government. The presentation concludes with analysis of the most effective technology and process countermeasures available to combat these ongoing threats.

Bio:

Robert Falzon is currently the Canadian Security Engineering Manager for Check Point Software Technologies Inc., the worldwide leader in securing the Internet. His background includes over 17 years of experience in large scale network security architecture, design, and deployment projects for government and business organizations spanning the globe.

Other past engineering responsibilities have included operational, management, and developmental duties for major accounts within EDS Canada's network security team, and lead engineer for many major European Telco accounts with Alcatel in Paris France. While with Alcatel, Robert worked to assist those accounts in moving to emerging voice technologies while maintaining a focus on security.

After obtaining his CISSP certification, Robert went on to provide security process and audit/penetration testing training to major financial and energy customers within Europe and the Middle East, in addition to providing audit and penetration testing services to customers worldwide.

n the early days of Business Intelligence, the focus was on awareness of the discipline and developing sound approaches and methodologies to ensure success and drive business value. Now, awareness is not a problem, but proliferation of the concept is. As more and more applications are including Business Intelligence capabilities out-of-the-box, how have the key concepts originally envisioned for the BI discipline come into question.

We say that because the transformation we see taking place in IT and business is not based on one singular, game-changing breakthrough in technology. Overview of Presentation:
GasBuddy launched in 2000 as a website to help people share and find the cheapest gas prices. In August 2010, GasBuddy entered the mobile app market, and has launched mobile apps on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows phone.

CEO Jason Toews will talk about the challenges and opportunities of developing and running mobile apps on multiple platforms.

Biography:
Jason Toews graduated from the University of Regina in 1998 with a Bachelors in Computer Science. Upon graduation, Jason relocated to Minneapolis, where he came up with the idea for GasBuddy.com and launched the website in 2000. In 2005, Jason moved back to Regina to set up headquarters in Regina as GB Internet Solutions.

Today, GasBuddy employs 38 people in Regina, and is expanding rapidly. Jason Toews acts as CEO of the company. GasBuddy was named as the top website of 2008 by Time magazine.

Speakers for CIPS London dinner meeting February 23, 2012

Jerrard Gaertner, CA•IT/CISA, CEGIT, CISSP, CIPP/IT, CIA, CFI, I.S.P., ITCP

Jerrard Gaertner is Director, Technology Assurance Services at Soberman LLP. He is a graduate of MIT and a chartered accountant designated as by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) as a specialist in information technology and systems auditing. Jerry is a certified professional in the governance of enterprise IT, as well as in computer security, internal auditing, forensic investigation and information privacy. He is also a trustee in bankruptcy.

For over 25 years, Jerry has worked at the intersection of business, technology and the professions. His engagements have included statutory computer audits, system certification and benchmarking, IT effectiveness reviews and advising Boards of Directors on technology strategy, governance and risk management. He has worked with major corporations as well as start ups, governments, crown corporations, schools and universities, legal and accounting firms and health care facilities throughout his career.

Jerry’s background and interests are eclectic. After MIT, he attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and then McGill University (first as a student and then as a lecturer). He spent a number of years in the National Office of one of the premier global accounting firms overseeing quality control efforts in systems auditing and researching ways to automate financial and operational risk assessments. Later, he and a partner formed one of the first a privacy and biometrics consulting firms in Canada.

Jerry has testified as an expert witness in court (insolvency) and before a parliamentary commission (Great Lakes shipping). He co-authorized 3 books on business failure (Carswell) and in 2010, published an article in the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (Elsevier). Jerry has been interviewed on television and radio numerous times, most recently about the phone hacking scandal in the UK and the security of Canada’s cell network. He has lectured at the CICA, Ontario Bar Association, Canada Revenue Agency, Association for Computing Machinery and various universities (among a large number of other venues) on a wide variety of technology and business-related topics.

Jerry is President of the Canadian Information Processing Society of Ontario. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Certified Forensic Investigators of Canada.

Tom Bigos

Prior to joining Digital Boundary Group in 2009 Tom worked in the Financial Services Sector in London and was a Cisco Networking Instructor at Fanshawe College.

At Digital Boundary Group he is responsible for both external and Internal operational security assessments for a group of customers in Canada and the United States and instructs the firm’s Hardening Windows Networks and Using Open Source Tools to Secure a Network lab-based training courses.

Tom writes on the topics of open source security and open source security tools on the blog Crushing Packets.
